I don't really understand what the deal is.

As you can see, the bounding box is not perfectly fitted to the mesh. I checked for any floating verts out in space that may have been extending the box out but there are none. Why will it not align to world and fit right around the object?

Also, as you can see, the mesh is clearly symmetrical around the y axis, yet why when I try and center the pivot to the object it places it down and to the left???

the pivot transform information of an object at its creation is almost always remembered and is what is used to form the bounding box. It would appear that you rotated your object at some point during the modeling and then corrected this rotation in Sub Object mode. There are a couple ways to fix this, but the easiest is to use the Rest XForm Utility. I usually convert back to an editable poly/mesh state after running the utility just to keep my stack clean.

That worked perfectly. neat utility
You'd think the bounding box would update and reshape itself accordingly as the mesh changes... but maybe there are advantages (i can't think of any)

this also fixes the pivot issue
Thanks!
