Hi everybody,

a while back I saw a video tutorial by Larry 'Splinegod' Shultz at www.kurvstudios.com (http://www.kurvstudios.com) about animating the growth of a vine with the help of particles. Now I managed to transfer this technique to messiah:studio 2.2. My tutorial as well as a project file can be found here (http://www.animationsnippets.com/tutorials/animatedgrowth/index.html). The tutorial also gives some insight into using the 'WeightSpot' shader node.

The final animation: Quicktime Sorensen3 (http://www.animationsnippets.com/downloads/animatedgrowthqt.mov)

As usual comments and critique are welcome.

Very cool. Thanks for taking the time to work on this.

There was also another use that someone did a while back for crowd simulation using particle ID. I wonder if anyone got any further with it.

Cheers,

Cool Suricate, thanks for sharing this! I intended myself to take a closer look at how particles have evolved, and your tutorial is very helpful here

Thanks on the feedback guys. At the moment I'm exploring the other possibilities to use particles. Basically it is possible to link objects to particles via the 'Slave Parent' option so that the objects follow the movement of the particles.

I aslo had a look at rendering particles at sprites. It should be possible to get some interesting effects there, though it takes some tweaking. Unfortunately, I already had to report some bugs to pmG, so it will still take some time until the particles are fully functional. I will keep you informed about further results.

Iknow about the original Kurv tutorial but how
is this messiah related or am I just smoking soemthing?
Messiah particles or lw particles?
Hypervoxel used in animation?

Well, that's the point :) : no Hypervoxels, no LightWave, just messiah animation, messiah particles and messiah rendering.

Nix that.... I see the link now.

that's quite an impressive animation, now if only my copy of messiah would arrive I'd have a play:sad:

Looking good:) I bet it would be possible to do an Lsystems variant via scripting. Anybody care to take a crack? If you do, don't hesistate to let us know if there are some messiah:script functions that you need.

Yes, an LSystem would be a challenging project. I saw that there is currently a big discussion going on about this in the LW forum. However, I think that then maybe there should be an alternative method for rendering the LSystem in messiah (apart from using metablobs). Therefore I am wondering whether it would be possible to expand the current concept of procedurals in messiah to also include some sort of curve based procedurals or even text (like in Cinema4D). I understand that this kind of animation is not the main focus of messiah, but still it might be nice to have it. Of course, this would also mean that procedurals don't show up as spheres in the final render. :)
