Hi,

I'm having probably pretty basic problems with the pivot in maya - The attached image explains my problem a lot better. The curve is created from the isoparm of the surface. I need to align the rotation of the pivot so that when I rotate the object both ends of the curve align perfectly to the isoparms of the larger surfaces so I can continue the birail - how do i do this? I can find no way of rotating the pivot at all, am i missing something?

What I would love to be able to do is have the pivot created and aligned to the object. Ie, the rotation value of the pivot uses a 'best fit normal' or something similar - is this possible.

I can't help but feel i'm missing something obvious, as a similar problem occours if I create a curve on a made live construction plane - when I manipulate the individual CV's of the curve I need to be able to 'inherit' the axis of the construction plane, but I can't seem to work out how to do this either.

As ever, any help is much appreciated.

Jules

Still not sure if I'm missing something obvious, but did work out a workaround if anyone is interested. I was able to create a dummy object [a cube, for arguments sake] and parent my original [unrotated] curve to the cube. I then snap aligned the cube to a temporary face I lofted onto the end of my birail, unparent, delete the cube and temporary loft: nicely aligned curve. bit of a ball ache really, still waiting for a much better solution ;).

You can rotate the local rotation axis, by going into the statusbar, turning on component selection mode, then clicking on the question mark. That shows your objects rotation axis, which you can then rotate to your hearts content. After that is done, select your object, go to rotation marking menu and put it on local, I believe. To move along the rotation axis, make sure 'Move along rotation axis' I think is turned on in the move marking menu.

Is that what you're after?

Thanks Iconoklast that is smashing! I still find it odd that you can't do this when you press insert, and couldn't find anything about this in the maya docs... but never the less very helpful.
Does anyone have any idea about being able to mimic the orientation of another objects axis? An example of this is the situation outlined above: as a similar problem occours if I create a curve on a made live construction plane - when I manipulate the individual CV's of the curve I need to be able to 'inherit' the axis of the construction plane
i.e. the cv's axis is the world space, and I need them to inherit the construction plane.
