I released a free shader available for Maya, Renderman, MentalRay ( XSI, 3DS Max, Maya ).
You can download it on my website: http://www.foolscreen.com (http://www.foolscreen.com/)
It output a colored brick pattern and the alpha is the corresponding depth info for bump or displacement.
Space between bricks is texturable to break regularity.
And the amount of color variation between bricks can be tweaked.

That looks really useful...only I can't seem to install for 3ds Max. After unzipping, the mental ray/max folder is empty. There are 2 files in the mental ray root folder, but I don't know if these are the max files, or what to do with them!

Sorry for MAX users, it is theoritically possible to install it and use it with Mental Ray for 3DS Max, but I don't have 3DS Max and don't know how to install/use it.
The installation documentation at http://www.foolscreen.com deals with all renderers except 3DS Max. Your help to complete this doc is very welcome.
I just know that you should get the mi file in mentalray/maya directory and customize it ( write the UI description ) for 3DS Max...
And put this mi file and the dll file in the right places.
