Title: Usnrov-1
Name: Marc Carson
Country: United States
Software: Blender, GIMP

I've been wanting to create some sort of underwater/scientific image for a while - something with that "oooh, what will we find down there" feeling - so I thought I'd give it a go. This model isn't based on anything real, just on some sketches I made in my spare time. I think it'd be fun to have a chance to operate one of these someday :)

The blue cables are visible on the outside because the idea is that it's easy to connect different devices to the exterior of the rover; kind of a mix-n-match scheme. Plus I felt that having some sort of chaotic bendy things visible on the outside made the completed piece feel more dynamic.

Thanks for any comments. It's been fun.

Damn! That is some great image you made. The blues and yellows work great. Modeling is great too. Never thought that Blender could do this kind of stuff that well. Have you thought of adding a little rust, nicks or dents along the sides or maybe some bolts along the seams?

Very nice, I like the fog a lot. The lighting seems incorrect (probably just me) but there is a light on the left side and the top is entirely black. I really like that you made it with GIMP and Blender3d, as I am on linux and this greatly inspires me that with the tools I plan to use I can make very nice renders as most of the renders I see here are in 3ds/Maya with photoshop.

Thanks for the kind comments. I thought about putting more fine detail on the sub but I think it would just highlight my ignorance when it comes to engineering; after all, this is modeled from my own designs :D

Some nicks and bruises would probably help but I'm not sure where I would put them or how they got there. :) Maybe some kelp stuck in the fan blades?

As for the lighting, I posted this at Elysiun as well but please see page 113 of the November 2004 National Geographic and compare if you like. In fact, look at all the pictures in the article; the undersea environment is no longer illustrated only by pale blues and greens.

I tried to think of ways to represent marine snow but I gave up, maybe next time :banghead:

I don't know what people expect but I still stand by my first remark. This is a great image. Yes you could have added nicks, bolts and dents (like when it's being hoisted onto a ship for instance) but the sense of design and lighting are very well executed. A trick you can use on the blades would be to make a selection of it an then add a radial blur. This would give the illusion it is actually working.

Wow that's nice. I like the whole watery atmosphere. Did you design this, i think it's really good. Great job
