It's been a while since I worked on this. I decided to do some more realism studies for extra practice before I attempted to work on this again. I have a better understanding of a few things and I'm trying to incorporate them into this. So yeah, slowly but surely it's coming along. Thanks for your comments and suggestions. :D

I'm a little late with this. After I found out about the challenge I got started right away. Both characters are male. I'm aiming for maximum androgyny because the 'Prince' is supposed to be effiminate, bratty, and sinister. While the mermal/boy is supposed to look pathetic, broken, but beautiful. There's a story behind the characters that I'll get into as post my progress. These aren't final, I just wanted to get a grasp on what I was aiming for with the characters looks and expressions. Still working out a background but I'm pretty happy with the poses so I don't think I'll change them much. Composition wise I'm not sure what to do.

The merboy... Doing him in this style took waaay too long. I'm trying to keep this as stylized as I can but I really want to play with the skin textures and realism and such. I can't seem to decide what colors to use on him though... He looks so miserable. Which is what I was aiming for.

i don't mean to be picky, but it really doesn't look like a boy, nothing about him says boy to me,he looks like girl.

its still excellent, i'll put aside the fact that it looks like a she.

LOL! :D You're not being picky. The merboy is a boy in my head... it's just i've never really tried to push this style to depict different genders. I'm normally drawing girls when I work like this. I do plan to work on that and make the characters more male. They are 'pretty' but still masculine. Like... they'd have 'boyish' good looks if that makse any sense. Any suggestions on how I can make him look like a boy. Not a MAN mind you, a yonng, probably 11-13 year old, boy. That's another thing I plan to 'beat' during this challenge. *is determined*. :D

Thanks!

This looks great! Though I was shocked when you said they were boys. I would suggest you either paint out the eye lashes altogether ( he is an under water creature?) or make them less apparent. Keep up the great work! Oh and he might need a bit of an "adams apple" too.

Lovely work so far. I have to agree with the others, it's not quite reading as male (even young male) just yet. In addition to the other excellent suggestions, perhaps less pink in the lips and a less curved chin and a stronger nose could help too? Anyhow, just suggestions, and plenty of time to refine. Best of luck to you!

yeh the one mistake u've made is making everything curved, that says female to me.

the lips are shaped liked a female,i dunno make em more, blocky? lol

the eyelashes seem way to long aswell ,even pretty boy eyelashes ain't that long.heh

and maybe a square-ish jaw could help.that goes for the nose too.

or u cud screw all of what we said, and just make em...gurls...that wud save the trouble lol.

The other character. The Prince. I figured I'd upload this in it's 'original' form before I made any alterations from the suggestions everyone made about making him look more 'manly' LOL! He REALLY looks ike a girl... Blast my limited knowledge of the male appearance. One thing though, his mascara stays! It's part of his design and Egyptian look.

Don't... mind his arm missing... I have no intention of finishing this because it's just a character sketch/model. Any new suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks! This is getting fun!

Maybe it's just the lashes that make him look feminine... maybe if you backed off the lashes and exaggerated the eye make up it might do the trick. A stronger jawline may also help. All said though i kinda like the androgynous look...nice work.

Okay, I spent all day reworking these characters and I'm getting a better grasp of how I want them to look. The merboy gave me pain, seriously. I adjusted many things about his face, gave him a chin, a jaw, sharper features, without making him look older then he is. I think the changes turned out well. The prince looks WAY better now. I'm still working at it and deciding just how masculine/effiminate I want to make him look. It's the mascara, seriously. Without it he looks like a boy. There's got to be a way for me to make it look right with the makeup intact. He looks much older then I wanted him too though. They aren't children, but then again they aren't adults. Bah, I'll figure it out. I think I'm going to refine the background in the sketch next. Thanks for your suggestions. They helped tons.

nice!

as for critique: perhaps the merboy's eye should be closer to the nose. and how about enlarging the ears a bit?

I like your start. It's looking awesome. I think you are on your way to a great entry. good luck.

As far as a critique...perhaps adding some more muscle definition to the prince...just a thought

mhmm, very nice style, like the soft and lovely way you draw. to let the boy appear a slight bit more masculine, maybe give him a bit more definition in his face on the cheekbones and also on the browbows. stringy eyebrows and long nice lashes look feminine, maybego for a bit a wilder browstyle and make the eyemakeup a bit more decent?

keep up the great work, looking forward to your next update!

Gorgeous looking artwork so far! I dont even need to read descriptions to know I'll be subscribing. Your style is wonderfully gentle, and being a fan of the bishounen femmy-looking boys you're definitely heading the right way! If you can, try giving the merboy an adams apple, as that usually always makes them look more masculine. Oddly enough I actually liked the merboy before you made the changes, as he looked more out of this world... but the changes you've made still make him look good. As for the prince, I don't think he's that far off, maybe a couple of minor tweaks round the jawline or cheekbones, but I don't think he really needs much at all. After all, his pecs should be a pretty good giveaway, and his stance is nicely masculine.

And lovely use of green in the shadows too.. I really look forward to seeing more
