View Full Version : Star Wars Episode IV - FanMovie
Art1977 03-24-2005, 02:58 PM This is my first 3D Animation. It was created in 2 Months only by my person.
This was for a Course on my College called "Graphikprogramming".
Donīt be to hard with your critics. I learn Maya since this Projekt. And I had never done before something in 3D.
Everything had to be done by me.
Modelling, Textureing, Compositing, Sound, Cut.... and so on.
The Textures for my Modells were partially from scifi.net and modified with Photoshop to fit on my Models.
2 Modells in this Animation were also from scifi. The Millenium Falcon & the Deathstar Trench.
Because of the tight "deadline" there was no time to modell it by myself.

Any critics ?
@first. I know the first part of the animation is to slow. I had a little bit problems in timeing the scenes.There was although no time including persons.
Here are some Screencaptures of the Animation. Sorry itīs not perfect, because its my first try. i have never done before any 3d work. I started with this project.

It looks to me (from the stills) like it is truly awesome, but I simply cannot download 140 MB!!!
Please make it a web-downloadable size for us. If you're using Premiere or After Effects, your settings should be something like:
Quicktime (Output type) - Sorenson Video 3 (Medium quality)
Resolution: 320 x 240
Audio: 22kHz, 8 bit, mono
Looking forward to seeing this.

The Screenshots looks better than the animation is. Because itīs hard to get deep atmosphere without having people in the animation. And from the technical side, there is a lot which has to be improved. Speed up the scenes, better lighting etc... but everybody starts with low skills. I think every artist is not satisfied with his own work.. and want to improve something. But for me itīs time to start a new project, to learn something more.
Next time iīll be on my PC, i will make a low res version of the video. I thought nowadays nearly the most people had a broadband inet connection.

Is 160 MB to much for everybody ? why are only a few comments about this animation?

Hey man, indeed, 160 MB is too much for most. I'm on a T1 at work, and cable at home. It was just crawling. Plus, at work, you forget about a download that takes that long. So you find yourself in a meeting suddenly wondering where all the Star Wars noises are coming from.
Believe me, I know where your coming from...you want to present this piece at its best. However, I can almost guarantee you that a prospective employer will not wait for your work if it's that large; and your competition will have work at a smaller web resolution. Part of making an effective presentation is catering to your audience, not presuming that they will cater to you.
Again, it looks really cool, but outputting a video that downloads quickly will get you more responses, I guarantee it.

Ok i will render out a low resolution video.
I think 360 * 288 (half resolution) should do it. i hope.

Hi dude.
Thats a great CG mini movie. I myself am fairly new to Maya and i must say to obtain the skill needed to create that star wars film effect in two months is incredible. Well done. I dont think the 140mb is to bad mate and looks way better than the small web version. Just out of curiousity how long did the film take to render, do you have multiple computers and send the render to a network or was this done on one comp? Yes there are a few niggles here and there with the lighting mate but the pros way way outdo the cons dude. Which Maya do you use, and do you have any suggestions on what is the best way to start out, i.e. simple nurbs or poly modelling, rigging and animation, is there any good books or DVDs that could prove useful? Anyway mate, consider yourself proud from your hard work and dont let no one take that from you.
Congrats
Phil

I have replaces some bad scenes and made some scenes faster. But only the scenes where it wasnīt to complicated because there is a lot of work in the composition in After Effects.
@DR_spank
I rendered this work at our college we have a computerlab with about 20 computers.... at 1 weekend you could render this in this lab... i have to look at my documentation ........
when i add all rendertimes the summary is 262 hours of rendering !
There is not included the time i have to rerender scenes which were filled with artifacts,lighting errors, etc....
I started with polymodelling and for me it is the easiest way of modeling. Buy some Gnomon Digital Tutor DVDīs at ebay and make some tutorials at www.learning-maya.com (http://www.learning-maya.com/). Plan a project and realize it, this is the best way to learn in my opinion.
@xboxdynasty
We have at our college a graphiclab with lightwave and maya installed on the computers.
@m_m_m35
Then you have to watch the movies :-).For me the best movies ever.
Now i uploaded 2 new smaller versions of the Movie.
