This is a very quick concept sketch - just done to establish the idea.

I had several ideas, but this one excited me the most.

It's about the relationship between a man, time and fate. I'll explain more deeply when I've done more work on it.

Thanks for looking! :)

I've just been playing with the idea, and character concepts.

Here is a quick colour concept for the Time spirit.

I had a bit of a sketch last night.

Seem to be getting back into the flow - I like this much more than previous sketches. It's moving away from the rather generic wraith-style design I had initially.

There are two spirits in this painting - Time and Fate.

Time is a malicious twisted character. Ancient and clever.

I'll explain more as I progress :)

I was originally thinking of doing something with time too, but then my idea turned out to be too back to the future. Glad I changed my concept, your idea is better than mine. cant wait to see how it turns out.

Here's another sketch - this time I've been playing with the Fate Spirit. I quite like how this one came out. I think it contrasts well against the Time Spirit design. There is an intentional yin-yang thing going on between the styles of the two.

I'm still just playing around really - giving the concept time to evolve visually. Doesn't seem any point in rushing into the final pic - loads of time left yet! :)

Looking good, would look better with some more whirliness in her clothing. Reminds me of Eldred from Dr Who and The Hand of Fear. Probably too young to remember that.

Mythmaker
04-01-2005, 09:13 PM
Dr Who? Yeah - I was probably hiding behind the sofa! ;)

She will have a lot more swirly things in the final illustration - as will the Time Spirit.

In my head it's looking great... but as we all know - the mind sees things differently! And then there's the question of whether I'm actually good enough to paint it as well as I hope I can! :o

..or something...

BaronImpossible
04-01-2005, 09:16 PM
Hey, saying she looked like Eldred was a great compliment. I really fancied her, even though she turned into a man in the end. The trauma of that particular episode haunts me to this day.

Mythmaker
04-01-2005, 09:31 PM
Hehehe.. well... there was an intention of mild androgeny in the design... :)

AustinM
04-01-2005, 09:45 PM
Wow, I can imagine how these two spirits will interact with each other. It looks like the time spirit is taunting the fate spirit. I have an idea: What if the two spirits were watching over a human being. This being could be portrayed in the middle of the scene. They could be the protagonists/antagonist that play a subcontious role in the human's choices.

Mythmaker
04-01-2005, 09:56 PM
AustinM - There will be a human in the picture (as illustrated in the initial concept).

Though the personalities are quite different, the two spirits are actually working together to manipulate the human - they have a common goal.

I really should post a more detailed explanation. I promise I'll do that soon - maybe with an updated concept for the whole picture.

Thanks for commenting.

Ok, hereís the concept I promised!

It is super-rough though. This isn't a final concept - I'm still undecided how best to illustrate it. I like the drama of the wide shot, but wonder if it would work better as a portrait - with more focus on the characters...

I figured it's about time I explained the theme in more detail...

The idea is that Time and Fate are masters over man.

The painting perceives Time and Fate as twin spirits. They seek balance by weaving the Course of Fate through time.

However, man is a frequent disruption Ė some try to follow a course of their own choosing. Challenging the master spirits by pursuing the dream of freedom.

Existing in a spiritual realm, Time and Fate have no direct control over us, but instead manipulate our choices with thoughts and visions.

Time is a malicious spirit Ė haunting us with visions of waste, failure and ultimately death.

Fate is seductive Ė offering visions of another life Ė an easier life contrary to the struggle and anguish we face when we go against Fateís wishes.

But in the end, their efforts can act to inspire the few to excel, and escape the binds of The Course of Fate.

It's hard to tell quite what's going on yet, but I'm still attracted to this image bacuse of the great balance of warm and cool hues. And your character designs so far have been great. So I look forward to seeing how you bring is all together and refine it more. Good luck and have fun!

what's up dude,

I like your idea. The concept design on TIME is killer. Very nice on that. Fate is also looking nice. As for your overall piece, i'm not quite sure that it's communicating it strongly on the composition that you choice and the way everything is moving. I wold like to see a couple more concept sketches on that. Right now, it's too busy. I'll keep up with your thread.

I know this is just your rough paint... but I think it absolutely kicks! Great concept, very dynamic pose and sense of energy. Love the warm and cool combination of colours too (don't forget some nice accents). I've always been a bit partial to the wide (cinematic) compostion, but a nice long 'portrait' compostion might work really well too. Can't wait to see where you take this one.

Good luck, mate!

This was a super quick (obviously) expansion of the time concept Ė I just stuck the original on a bigger canvas and painted the rest in. I wanted to show how the material twists and flows behind him Ė as if he had a snake-like body.

I havenít done an awful lot on this recently cause Iíve been trying to get other stuff out of the way. But now I can focus my energies on the competition.

I started working on my final piece. This is rough colour concept over the actual linework. I tend to do this so I get an idea of where Iím going and how well the composition is working. It also helps keep me motivated!

I like elements of this, but I felt like I wasnít really doing the characters justice. The fate spirit in particular just doesnít cut it. I donít think the time spirit looks as good as in that early concept Ė but I have made him look more evil.

Anyway Ė Iíve now started on a new linework using this as a reference.

Itís difficult to get the interaction working well and to make the elements flow together. It doesnít help that my computer doesnít seem to be up the task. Iíve tried working on it full-size, but when I try to save it in Painter (classic) the program just closes and I lose the work Iíve just done. So I had to split the linework in half so I can work on it in painter, then I piece it back together in PSP.

Itís a major pain in the ass cause I canít see how everything is relating as Iím working on it. I donít know yet how Iím going to manage with the rendering if I have to work in parts Ė If anyone has any ideas feel free to share them!

Hey, nice to see you're picking up the concept again!

A suggestion about the program - since there are less than 30 days left anyways, why not download a trial version of Painter IX? It's fully functional according to Corel's site, there's just the time limitation. I've used it for files of decent size and it won't crash upon saving. :)

Umm... well.. I would.... but I already use it months ago, so it's run out! :(

I think I'll manage if I do most of the colour work in Paint Shop, then break it up to do refining in Painter. Not ideal, but it'll have to do...

I don't think I can afford to spend time getting to grips with different programs anyway - I'm rapidly running out of time! :O

Thanks for the comments! :)

Here's the progress I've made since last night.

I think it's progessed pretty fast - It's helped working from a detailed sketch because I've been able to concentrate on the colouring more without messing about changing or adding details.

I've been trying to make the material of the Fate spirit more silken - that's probably been the biggest challenge with the colouring. There's still more to do on that.

I think I've lost contrast on that side, so I need to try and rectify it.

Keeping the balance as I've added details and light has been tricky - not sure how well I'm doing...

I'm pretty confident I'll get it finished, I wish I wasn't in this postition though! :D

This concept assumes that Time and Fate are masters over man.

The painting perceives Time and Fate as twin spirits. They seek balance by weaving the Course of Fate through time.

Fate is seductive Ė offering visions of another life Ė an easier life contrary to the struggle and anguish we face when we go against Fateís wishes.

The picture is a representation of the metaphorical spirit realm. A human is defying the Spirits and following the light of inspiration. The spirits try to dissuade the wandering soul but he is determined.

I donít want to go into too much detail Ė there are a lot of meanings in it, but I like to leave things for the viewer to figure out.

I have left out a few details I had intended to illustrate Ė but that was because I didnít want to overcrowd what is already a busy picture.

WellÖ Itís been fun, and stressful Ė Iím glad to have finally reached this stage.

Thanks to everyone who has commented and supported me.

And good luck to all who have or will have finished Ė the competition has been inspirationalÖ
