It's a good way to practice portrait painting from life, because your model is allways around and will sit still if you want him/her to.
And I am also curious what the hell you guys look like :)

Everybody seems to be shy ;) You can't be that ugly...

Self portaits are a good idea, I am also curious how you people look like...

:argh:

I'll make a start. Voilá! That's me.
A rather quick self portrait, done in painter.

Rats. I tried to do a self portrait, but it didn't look a thing like me. Since I did it from a photo, I decided to do a little test. So I simply traced the photo, and what do you know? It didn't look a thing like me! I guess I need to take a new photograph before trying again.

bibi5000
09-26-2002, 07:52 AM
roel: don't take a photo as reference. Mostly, the camera "freezes" an unnatural expression of your face. These damn snapshots are crap. Use a mirror as reference and make some sketches until you are happy with one of them.

wondahboy: you may hear that often, but you look like the doom spacemarine ;)

Carlocki: Cool sketch. I like it. Why didn't you write the text with the hand? Would fit better, I think.
Why am I a Doctor? I even can't see blood :surprised . But thanks for the promotion.

Yeah, but I don't have any mirrors that aren't connected to a wall. And I didn't think it would be a good idea to put my computer in the bathtub.

I went ahead and updated my portrait. The original one I posted was done several years back. I didn't want to really do too much work on it, but just give it a better color scheme. The old colors were just too saturated. What was I thinking? Anyway, I like this type of background better anyway.

Anyway... Here it is...

This is my first post here. Been amazed by so much of the art... This was the first portrait I attempted, learned a lot, have done more (better too) since. This is half of the original, there's another person in the other half of the image. So here's my mug

It's half pencil/half photoshop...c&c welcome:D

Jake
10-04-2002, 10:11 AM
You're getting close, but you have some proportion issues. Try scaling the eyes and the mouth down so that they take up less area on the face. After that, you may need to tinker with the nose as well.
Each element (eyes, etc.)by itself looks good. You've got an interesting style there going from colored pencil to photoshop. One thing you might want to do is temporarily convert the whole image to greyscale to see how much of a range you've got going from dark to light.
Rock on

hey jeroentje my favorit 2d moderator ;-))

just surfing around on cgtalk and checking the 2d forum,as usual!
but what's this...selfportrait...cool i made this at school this morning (btw started at BTK - Grafik and Design School in Berlin)

so the topic was to draw a portrait without any mirrors or pictures as references..only the image you've in mind and the message you'll send to others when ya communicate with them!

we use drawing-coal for this!

(the image is not very good , cause i made it with my digicam...but scanning is impossible!)

This was a class assignment I had a while ago. It was completely sketched and painted using photoshop, a mirror and a wacom tablet.

My Picture can be found here (http://www.geocities.com/g_youngsmith/grgsmith.jpg)

I must be an idiot or something, but I can't figure out how to get an image to show up. Can someone please tell me how exactly I am supposed to put an image that will show. The FAQ and vB Code help doc are not helpful at all. All I get when I preview the subbmission is a dead image Icon. Very frustrating..

For free hosting places check out www.tripod.lycos.co.uk , www.lycos.co.uk , www.fortunecity.com . (Links to) free upload software can be found there aswell and also at www.tucows.com. Or do a search in your favorite search engine. (My standard minichallenge line ;) )

Yea, I cheated some and drew using the photo as reference rather than a mirror. :D
There is a distinction between the ear and neck, it just doesn't show up well at all in the painting.
What is it about the eyes that don't match?

Cheers

@Pancreas
I love you too Panky :D
It's so good to see that you are improving over the last months I saw you post your work here :) You're moving on from good to great :) This is one great portrait you have there.

As a little crit: did you know that even if you use a very modest gradient background, you can make a portrait pop off the canvas a lot more, and help the lighting in the portrait itself? Rembrandt was a master with that. Check out some of his portraits at www.rijksmuseum.nl
I saw them in real life 3 weeks ago.... *sigh*...

bibi5000
02-05-2003, 11:38 AM
Thanks for that tip, jeroentje. I dig Rembrandt as well. But every time I step into a museum I start to get jaleous, because when you think about the little things you do and see what others have done you get desperate. But what the heck, that's the story of my life...

So much to learn...

Keep this alive guys! Also, check out www.conceptart.org.

Andrew Jones posts a self portrait every day there:
http://209.126.148.88/forums/forumdisplay.php?forumid=9

Remember Rembrandt. Later in his life, poor, unable to afford a model, his paintings no longer in demand he still created self-portrait after self portrait. Today, museums are filled with them.

Perhaps some future digital archive... ya never know.
