Could not stand looking at the sketch pinned on my drawing-table wrong like that any longer ;-)

Actually I had the urge to participate in the 3d section of the contest, but because I have not yet completed my 3Dattack.net olympic contest animation that would be unwise.
On the other hand I could not get the contest theme out of my head yesterday night, thinking of images that fit and browsing the gallery of WIPs already uploaded, very inspiring..
I just could not pass this challenge for the sake of creative sanity.
So I decided to register & participate in 2D (the prizes are much cooler in 2D this time anyway ;) ) and upload a rough i did yesterday night as a starting point, only to find out I forgot to turn on my SCSI scanner (when i started my computer to render a computing intensive still for print yesterday)-- which basically means that I cannot scan until my render is finished (whenever that is) & I can restart the computer. :D

I simply could not resist,Brian.--- the theme sparks my imagination.
I will address it from the dark side, that promised, as I need a break from the happy-go-lucky world of product-advertising.

I could restart my computer and am able to scan again ;-)
This is the first doodle-image I made yesterday night when returning home to remember the image-idea I had when driving in the car earlier.
I am very sure I will do this image, so I wont try out different ideas, but will continue in fleshing out the thing & play with perspectives, staging & such then later.

This is to get the picture I had in mind on paper.
I will design the stuff (gadgets, costumes) later and work out the final composition then.
I am trying to put the stuff down fast so I can capture as much of the mind-image as possible so I can work it out later but wont forget why i wanted to do this particular scene.

And this is what I had in mind for the expression of the characters.
I want the Mistress to look like
"Ok, works as expected", she is pleased, but this is nothing special, she is used to it.
The servant is hoping the mistress will be pleased, trying to smile but conscious and not sure if everything is fine.

Wait, I don't get it: If she now has the servan'ts arm, why is she testing out her - presumably new - right arm while it's clear that the servant is missing his left arm. Did she put it on backwards?! :-)

neat concept!

Hi Olli

Very interesting idea, and reminds me of science fiction stories where rich people create clones of themselves to use as banks for spare limbs and organs. How did the servant come to be a servant of that particular master? Are they related somehow?

I like the idea, I think the final illustration could be pretty disturbing if done right!
Good luck!

Sweet, I love that idea! :D

Thanks for the comment, Francis.
pretty much sums the story up.

I am currently thinking about what style (not artistic but design) to choose--
my 3 current choices.
- New Medieval (High-tech aristocracy but a social structure like in medieval times that leads to fashion that immediately shows social status ), I would base costume design on old medieval wardrobe

-Costume inspired by 20s/30s pulp fiction covers , Jean Harlowe silken dress
(the dark pulp covers of Brundy spring to mind (is that the correct name?- I am trying to find the stuff in my library, but have not yet succeeded-)

- todays clothes,no SciFi, Mistress dressed in upperclass (would make the pic less interesting designwise but might make it more disturbing) casual dress

like where this is headed. Great studies of facial expressions. Maybe a slightly more satisfied expression on the mistress' face? Keep going!!

Thanks for the input.
I will deal with the facial expressions later on, when the final composition is chosen & i have decided on the world the pic takes place in..
I only wanted to pin down what i had in mind first, so it does not get lost.

In a medieval setting a more severe expression might make sense, in a contemporary setting an expression of boredom might give more depth--

I hardly have time to work on the pic now (Easter), will turn my attetion to it again next week, then play with it some more.

Wonderful concept, and as said above, has the potential to be really rather creepy. I love the idea that the slave doesn't even think of the fact he's giving up his arm for someone else, only bothered about whether the mistress with like it. From the concept sketches, it looks like a operating theatre , which would be kinda cool. But that could just be me seeing things...

wuensch
03-31-2005, 09:21 PM
Yes, it is an operating theatre (didnt know the english term until now--)
I am having a busy week ,plus in the 3Dattack contest where I participate the final round`s deadline is approaching, I will need to finish my animation composition first so i can render it before the deadline .

I assume this will take my whole weekend, so i am afraid I will turn attention to this pic & the challenge only after that , but then with my whole attention.
