Latest Update: Line Art: drawing

Getting closer to a finished line drawing. Ive worked on the guy the last hour, still needs a few revisions including placement of the right hand, which I think I will have come over the top of the robots head. The left sleeve of the guys shirt looks weird to me so that will be fixed as well. Im not going to do too much to the robot and more than likely will keep it as is. I will be working details into it during the coloring process. Next, Im going to tackle the background. I'll be adding some sort of computer screen in front of the robot and a table/desk thing to support the computer itself. Finally, I will be adding a chair that the robot will be sitting on. I should be able to finish all of this some time this after noon and hopefully be able to start on my coloring rough later tonight.

This is my first sketch for the Master & Servant Challenge.

The working title for my piece is Beauty & the Beast. I like the idea of how both Beauty & Beast can be seen as either Master or Servant.

Iím going to keep this image fairly simple and uncluttered. I have an affinity for very simple, clean illustrations and I believe this will help me actually follow through to the completion of the challenge.

Iím still a bit rusty with my sketching as I donít do so on a regular basis. I am trying to draw Beauty's face from a slightly lowered angleÖ it may look awkward at the moment but I think as soon as I lay down some color what I want will come together. I plan on sketching the Beast next, which I will position directly behind Beauty.

Any critique is greatly appreciated and will be returned. Good luck everyone!

you ve got a solid comp of a beauty there man i think if you extended the nose out just a little bit you might get more of the lower angle you are looking for. Youre looking good so far though keep it up she's got a regal beauty look to her not diva but more classical should fit very nicely into your idea.

I got my wrist beat up pretty bad last week so I havent been doing much sketching. I knocked this out last night as a quick rough of what I want the beast to look like. Im looking to make him as menacing as possible but keeping beauty as calm and regal as possible.

I will be working on some color studies this weekend.

Composite and color study. The background is just multiple layered texture maps at the moment. This is more or less what the finished bg will look like, apart from a few tweaks. The colors I will be working with are mainly natural/dark tones. Iím thinking of making Beauty reach up and touch the right side of Beast's face, almost as if she's consoling him. The sketches will probably be reworked as Iím only using them to get an idea of what I want. So I probably won't be doing any of painting over them, just using them as reference. I'm currently debating using zbrush to create busts for both characters which in turn will help with lighting but I may just use reference photos for that instead.

Coloring for the Beast - wip. Like a lot of people, the detail in my work tends to develop as I work with coloring. I will be slowly adding details to the Beast(specifically with highlights and skin texture) before I progress to Beauty. I will be using reference photos of my wife for Beauty so I can get a better idea of light placement and layout of the arm that will be touching Beast's face.

Detailing on the Beast. Working in some highlights at the moment. I think I might throw some horns on him...

its cool its cool ,the only thing i don't quite think is cool is the beast's mouth i don't quite like the transition from skin to teeth , no gums ,it looks wierd you should at least try something with the structure , I do bellieve the teeth would affect the skin which they come out ,just run your fingers on your gums and you will feel the humps.Nice sketches though

God dude, I didnt even notice until you mentioned. It definitely looks like that MK character .... which wasnt done intentionally but now that I see the similarities, I think I will be making a few changes. I actually got the idea from this old Jae Lee ink drawing of the Marvel character Tiger Shark:

I think I am definitely going to throw some horns on this bad boy now. Thank you for the heads up!

Thank you for your comment! Yeah, Iím still working out the details on the teeth, theyíre just sitting there for the moment. I think once I get the majority of the fleshing out done, it will look a little more solidified.

Hi there again, back for another peep. Sorry to hear about your rist... what a bummer! Ever tried sketching with your other hand?... not easy. I like the characters although I agree with previous posts in saying that he needs some organic manipulation! Does she have to kiss this guy?.. man, have you ever kissed a girl/guy and all you got was teeth?!.. he looks nasty!

My main concern for your composition is that it lacks seriously in the storytelling department... maybe you could start developing some kind of relationship between these characters with various poses etc.. Maybe you could have her looking into an ornate looking mirror with his reflection behind her? You could have her sitting there looking but he's not actually in the room, like it's an enchated mirror and she is spellbound by it? ...That way you wouldnt have to change your compostion too much. Just one idea.

Good luck with it whatever you choose - jez

Well, I decided to change the beast character a bit by adding some horns to him. I didnít like the idea of having him look too much like a mortal kombat character so this will hopefully make him stand out a little more. Iím still throwing ideas around for changes to the character's face. I went ahead and changed the eyes to look a bit glossy and cataracted. Still predominantly in the roughing stages but slowly coming together.

More work on the horns and began coloring for beauty. I adjusted her lips a bit as I think they were too far down to get the desired effect of her tilting her head back while looking down toward the viewer. Im still having a little bit of trouble with the nose area, will be working to resolve this throughout the week. This will probably be the last big update until next weekend as I dont have time during the week to work on illustrations much.

BTW, thank you all who have taken time to give comments and critiques, it has been much appreciated. - J

I decided to go a different route with the challenge and start over. I wasnít completely happy with the progress I was making in my initial illustration and felt it didnít emphasize the "Master & Servant" theme as well as it could have.

Iíve been throwing around the idea of working with a human & robot relationship which was one of my initial concepts for the challenge. The idea is to have a robot programmed to illustrate the cgtalk challenge entry. I am also debating making the final image parody the Norman Rockwell Saturday Evening Post Magazine as a layout. Seeing as how I have roughly a week left to finish the challenge, Iím going to keep the image as simple as possible. The posted sketches are bits Iíve put together during breaks at my job. Nothing solid but you get the idea. Iím shooting for a finished line drawing by Saturday and all day Sunday to color it. Nothing like working under pressure. :)

I'll have all day today and tomorrow to work on my illustration. Here are some quick roughs I put together to workout my layout. I decided to bring the characters closer which turned out to be better use of space. Right now Im trying to decided if I want the human in front of or behind the robot.
