in the help menu in 3ds, there is a tutorials section, there are some explosion tutorials. they are a good starting point.

Look under the 3D MAX board, there is a sticky thread with all sorts of links to tutorials.

I'm pretty sure that there is one for explosions.

You can make very realistic explotions using AfterBurn.
I've really enjoyed making explotions using AfterEffects.
A very very nice plugin for 3dmax.
