Christopher Catizzone has entered the Master and Servant 3D.

Challenge Page (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/masterandservant/view_entries.php?challenger=6275)

Latest Update: Final Image: finished, yay!
http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/9/6275/6275_1116393591_medium.jpg (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/9/6275/6275_1116393591_large.jpg)

So to recap, my concept was:

"a Knight and his Steed"

I wanted to show a master-servant relationship that was less about subjugation and more about loyalty. Here we see the knight praising his faithful steed... the steed just happens to be a 1600 lbs. flying reptile. I also gave the knight modern equipment and clothing because there's no rule saying that dragons could only exist in the middle ages.

Comments always welcome.

When I read the title of the competition, I went through a few concepts in my head and settled on this one almost right away. A kind of fantasy / sci-fi riff on an old concept, I guess. I just hope I can find time to get this one done. Such a shorter deadline than last time.

Comments / crits always welcome.

I begin by modelling from a single polygon box, instanced and mirrored down the x axis, extruding and cutting faces and moving vertices.

Continuing to model the dragon. Notice that it isn't a seamless body. This is because the knight will be obscuring the bulk of the dragon, hiding the seams. Why do extra work that will only be hidden, right? I'm also roughing out parts for the knight on my other computer; I'll have to post some of them when I get back to it.

Nice additions to you dragon . . he looks preatty draogony . but he could be dragonier. I hope that is useful advise. but seriously, the face already has alot character to it. I can't wait to see it textured. One question; are you gonna add any teeth to the dragon? Or is it gonna be one of them sissy dragons? Anyway, keep up the good work. Alexi.

Blocking out the background mountains. Again, using box modelling. I think my teachers drilled the whole "quads = good, n-sided = bad" mantra into my head so much that I do it by default now.

Now I've smoothed the mountains and gone over them with the polygon sculpt tool. They will pretty much stay this way until I can assemble them into the composition file with the dragon and knight, so that I don't end up spending time on details that will be obscured.

those smooth mountains are much better then the square ones . .how'd you do that? Anyway, they look cool .. . it's a much better idea then just doing a painting for the background. Now you can get all kinds of cool light and shadow effects. Is that a canyon running through the center or some kind of river? And when will we get to see the main character guy? Good stuff so far. Alexi.

The basic shapes of the dragon. Enough to put him into the scene with the knight at least. Yeah, I know, I've been slacking off a bit. I need to pick up the pace this week.

I've started doing some of the props for the dragon and the knight. Holy crud, am I ever behind schedule... If you see a whole lot of progress all of a sudden in the next shot, it may be because I'll finally just sit down and work this week. I hope.

U...I might steal some design parts for my dino creature, but then again there is no other way to put saddle on a dragon or dinosaur,,is it,...

Sure, feel free. I'd be interested to see someone else build the same parts on their own model. Please just don't give your dino wings. :p

I've finally been able to sit down and work. The knight was built the same way as the dragon, using some old pages from my sketch book for anatomy reference. I really should use photos; all my human models look too much like my drawings. I put basic rigs in both just for the purpose of posing them, but some of the details are just slapped on top, no rigging needed.

As always, feedback is appreciated

Hey Chris, amazing progress! everything is looking good so far, I really like the folds on the human character's clothing, and the rocky landscape looks cool too. I think you're newest (3d)composition is even stronger then your concept sketch, I like the charqacter's posing, camera angle and the angles of the dragon's wings better. great stuff, and good luck with the last modeling touches, as well as the texturing and lighting. Alexi.

I decided to light before I textured, simply because I felt like liting today. Actually, this sometimes makes it easier to texture, because you get a better idea of what it will look like in the final.

All rendered with the default maya renderer. Spots with hi-rez filtered map shadows.

Minor update. I think the last light set-up was too dark and not saturated enough, and a bit unbalanced.

I've started to throw in some colour and bump maps, though none of the shaders are done at all.

No, he's not bald. I just haven't painted the hair on yet.

So I've finally finished texturing and now I'm rendering it off in layers. Why layers? Well, you'll see that in the next step. I have to admit this piece is a bit rushed. I would have been happier with it if I hadn't had so many interruptions that cut into my precious work time.

I've comped the layers together, blured the background and midground, did some masked brighness adjustments to the mid and foreground, added some haze around the sun, added the translucence to the wings using a colorized copy of the foreground selectively erased away and patched up some minor faults.

Hey Chris, great job on your final image. I love the post effects, particularily the translucency of the wings. The background sun set is cool, but I think it could have used some lens flares, you can never have too many lens flares, right? Both characters look really good; I like non-photo realistic texturing and the over all story-book illustraion feel. Nice stuff. Alexi
