The power of observation is what will help you most. Someone can tell you how to move a handle this way and that...but really is that going to help...NO. All quadrapeds, just as all humans, insects, ect. move differently. Try finding a Muybridge site with some flash examples for some basic motions and then add in some of your own little quirks for stylization or mood.

if you want i can shoot you a quicktime movie of a couple of seconds. i got a cat, so what are you wanting? just a walk? you can then play it in slow motion and study it....just a thought.

Thanks for the offer. Actually I'm animating a dinosaur. I've found some elephant footage I might be able to use. I just thought there might be some general guidlines to follow when animating a quadruped.
Obviously, there's an order to the leg movement, which is usually animimal dependent and speed dependent.
Maybe a trip to the zoo is in order!!
