View Full Version : Image types?

I'm wondering if there is a certain image type that is best suited for use in 3d projects?

I ususally don't pay too much attention at what image types I use, though I tend to save edited images either as JPEG or .psd.

But because I just accidently discovered that a .psd image gave a much better bump result than a JPEG, I'm wondering if meaby the same is true with other types as well.

I thought the diffrences were mostly in filesize etc, not in the actual display.

Any info is greatly apriciated.

Quality-wise your best off with an uncompressed or lossless format like .psd, .tif, .tga, etc. I usually use .psd because it's smaller than than the other lossless formats and it supports alphas, layers, etc.

Jpegs can be okay but it depends entirely on the level of compression. Compressed bitmaps save you disk space, but they don't reduce the memory load for rendering since they have to be decompressed to be used. In fact they slow down the render process because of the need to decompress, but I think the speed hit is probably negligible.

for my finals i usually save as a JPG.

for wips i'll use tiff and psd, because of the layer/alpha channel facility.

I've always used flattened TIFF's or JPG's.

How do you use a layered PSD file as a texture map? When I tried, I got an error message saying that a composite wasn't saved with the file?

Thanks,
Mike
