Some experiments with leaves.
To made leaves I use old method:
-spray points
-clone balls in place points
-jitter
-use clip map (LightWave veins procedural texture) to polygogns looks like leaves

Hi ps.pl,
Your trick to creates leaves is really good.
You trees are looking good so far.
you already have a good start, so good luck for this challenge.

This is not my trick. As I write before this is very old LW trick (6 years or more), but I don't remember who used it first.

Hey nice tree! I saw the bark and didn't think much of it, but you did a great job on the leaves. Are you using alpha maps for this?

Great job with the trees; that's a very nice enviroment so far.
I decided to write some more about process making this leaves.
http://www.ps.3d.pl/cg/leavestut.jpg
1. Creating low poly ball
2. Spraying some points or jitter points from branches.
3. Use point clone to clone ball
4. Jitter a little
So far tis is no problem to use it on other programs.
I used LightWave, and I don't know other 3d programs well so I can't write how to mede this on Maya, XSI, 3dS or other, but I describe this so you can translate this.
I use clip map (mayby It is alpha map in your program keetmun), transparency is no good for this, because when you use specular you can see effect on pic 5. Clip map it is no sufrace (material) texture, but object. It describe to renderer where render geometry and where no (pic 6).
7. So we have our object with green material
8. And we use clip map texture. And again there is problem because I use LightWave Veins math texture, this is fully 3d texture, so there is no problem. You may encouter problem when you use maped or uv textures.
If I good remember something similar seen in one of azazel pictures (azazel use 3DStudio), so you can ask him.

Yeah, this is also my first time here. I think a making of a tree is a long shot. It's really hard to show something like this as a living form having it's own soul, especially on a still. I can't wait to see the next steps of your image. So I wish you good luck, nice work :)
Thanks all.
Rendrering takes today about 20 min on my Athlon 2400 (with GI and area lights), but evry day takes longer so soon I split scene on two layers and will be rendering separate.

Add mushrooms, change a little shapes in first plane and experiment with background.
Jelmer: This will be more sharp when my ZBrush end with it :D
3Draven: It is long time till lighting and texturing but I have nice lighting trick in my head and I hope this will be work.

WOW! i like the style there ps.pl...very unique....... gives a earthly feel!:)
dont you think that the tree is to small? if the lord is so big the tree starts to look as banzai! consider proportions of "Bartek" or other old trees
http://www.plastyk.kielce.pl/zabyt00/s2.GIF
or maybe the composition is bad, u cut out big part of tree and make it appear smaller.
Thanks guys :wavey:
kru: You are right with tree proportions, but this is stylized picture and proportions may be disturbed. Characters are even now very little, and if tree was bigger, characters would be too small. By the way: I like bansai :). Thank you for your comments.

Yeh.... really nice looking trees. I wanna try some trees some time. Could you recommend something that can effectively generate many of them? I notice that Vue Infinite is one of the prizes. Do you know if it is any good? Dont know anything much about 3d stuff.
smaddl
03-27-2005, 11:54 PM
very nice progress
yes - i get the idea of stylisation but, the character is a Great Lord Of All The Nature - isn't he? in my opinion the idea looses clearity when he is attached to little bansai tree :). i'd consider other compositions then (moze żabia perspektywa/pionowy kadr ew inny taki trik?)
but well - it's just my opinion after all.

Wow wonderfulk...will look nice with texture!!
KryHoo: Thank you (milo cie tu znowu widziec)
Jack Youngblood: If you wana generate landscapes Vue is good and maybe Bryce, you can try Terragen. Terragen is free, here is link: http://www.planetside.co.uk/terragen/ But I never try them.
smaddl: Thank you.
kru: Maybe you are right, I was never good in composition. I like this picture, but I think this is good advice, and I will try diffrent composition.
Troof: Maybe, but I always afraid of texturing, bad texturing may kill best picture :).

There is something compelling about the third image, of looking UPWARDS to the being, but of course you will still need the slave in there too.
I think in the straighton view, the thick trunk in the top left corner is distracting to me.
Otherwise I like the feel overall.
eddieellis, Kid Mesh, the1st_angel, jddog, und3r thanks guys.:wavey:
Dream Artisan this trunk in the top left corner will be much more dark in the final image. I will change that when I start to texturing and lighting.

nice progress mate!
I must say that the camera view in the right upper corner is fantastic to me! It's most emotional, shows so much power... but th erest of the scene would be a problem then.. so maybe put the camera in the lowest possible position(considerind the whole scene), nad simply make this central tree hifger... not sure, I'm just thinking loudly:)

Wonderful work on the trees and leaves! You also gave some good tips here! Best luck!
Just keep WIPping
Alex: No problem, and see you later :wavey:
DMW, Tremoside: Thank you.
arturro: I know that oryginal concept isn't the best, and have very static composition but I don't know I like him very much. I trying to fix it, mayby I stretch tree. Camera in the lowest position this is good idea, thanh you for that. I will back to experiments when I end sculpting object on the first plane (probably tommorow morning).

I think it would be cool if the camera was on the floor looking up, a little from one side, at the lord of the forest. Right before the camera: a 'valley' of mushrooms leaves and branches.
http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/9/6246/6246_1112178430_medium.jpg (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/9/6246/6246_1112178430_large.jpg)
Gods paused for a moment...
...ZBrushing coninue.
i must say that i like the third composition mostly.(a nie mowilem ze zabia? ) maybe render on other format - for exemple 16:9 or a square...
those two branches on a first plane near left and right borders are to simetrical for me, changing angle of one of them wouldb be just enough...

 Looking great man! The leaves are looking nice, though abit too spherical if i look more closely. The man in the tree is great, and so is the tree. More fine roots for the main tree in the process i guess? :D And maybe abit more branching of the crown and a more uneven trunk for the tree? Just some suggestions, great job all the same

I never used ZBrush before, can you take work from ZBrush into LightWave and still retain the detail you did in ZBrush and how. Does it up your poly count?

That bended character in front of the other is really expressive! The classical relationship between master and servant is absolutely visible and senseable! Congrats!

03-30-2005, 05:14 PM
looks like ya master seems to be a powerfull force of nature.. I like it :)
Ravendsg, tilite: I know that leaves on main tree dosn't looks good, but scene with leaves rendering about 20 min, and to fix this need experiments, so this need a time.
Neeno: Unfortunately I will slow down after this week. I must back to study so I will have less time for this.
gra7: Plants wasn't texturded. It was sculpted in ZBrush (look under)
Zlatan B.: Yes, You can take work from ZBrush into LightWave and still retain the detail you did in ZBrush. You can modell object in LW then export to obj, obj can be imported to ZBrush, then dividing and sculpting (there was nice movie about sculpting on ZBrush webpage, but I can't connect to it, when page will be back online I post a link). As you can imagine you must divide couple of times to make sculpting very small details possible, and then object will have a lot polygons. Then you can export hi poly object back to obj, but there is other possibility, export low poly model (with ZBrush UV), and export your sculpting as dispalcement maps (you must divide object, but you can do that after bones deformation, good solution for animation), or normal maps (you can use then low poly geometry, but on the edge of object you will see the diffrence) .
Tremoside, makaron: Thank you.

WOOW!! It's butiful! I go to school :)
Sorry for my bad english :)
did u consider giving him some attributes like pagan gods had? for axample Swantewit had a horn (or am i wrong? - whatever...). maybe look for some inspiration in slavonic myths!
u would have some more options for using his hands...
Thanks Dead Man W. and mecman
Ellon my english isn't perfect too, so I don't mind.
kru: I decide to make him like man changed in tree, maybe long ago he was mortal but he sacrifice to protect his tribe from evil. I was considering barnches instead right hand, some of my ideas will apear when I start sculpting him in ZBrush. I think that looking inspiration in slavonic myths is great idea but it is hard to get some oryginal art of this theme.

I have played with servant back topology. Everything will go to ZBrush for sculpting, so mesh topology is not so important, but this was good oportunity to do some resarch in this mater. As you can see I do lot mistakes. Maybe I fix this If I have time.

Nice modelling and going well dude! :) Give more updates soon!
jddog: Glad you like it.
Kid Mesh: I think that ZBrush must have 3 and 4 points polygons (because he using subdivide algorithm) but I wasn't trying to put object with 5 points polygons and more, mayby I try this when I find some time and will have acess to ZBrush (now I don't have). When I was saying that mesh topology is not so important I mean that you can sculpt evrything even from box if you divide it many times. But of course when topology is good you don't have to divide so many times and you can have object with not so lot of polygons.
Neeno: Thank you dude!

I decided to add more characters: creatures of the forest - tree people, this is early stage of modeling and inventing.
Creatures based little on Mignola style.

Good start on the forest people..try and give them maybe different head configurations....like different branches....hope you get what I mean

hi. nice little forest man. but those eyes don't fit too well. he looks like an alien rather than some forest guy. moreover I think you could break the symmetry and make them look more random.

I like the little guy! I really dig how he has those cut-off stumps as eyes. It'd be cool to leave it like that -- have them actually be these sightless protrusions coming from his skull.
I'm interested to see him textured!

hheheh! great little guy! He made me really laugh:thumbsup: I'm not sure if he fits to the mood of the picture, I think that it'll depend on his texture, so I'll wait for that with my opinion.

ZBrushing again. Trees in background this time.
3dRaven: I want give about 4 tree people, evry one will be different.
grooshka: I hope when I start sculpting in ZBrush will be all right, but is nice idea to break symmetry
kattkieru: I'm glad you like it.
arturro: Thank you. I hope that when I sculpt him in ZBrush will be more fit to picture.
alex.h. : Thank you mate.
I have a very busy week, and not a lot of time. Probably next weeks will be worst (mayby I get job in game industry :). I hope end this picture on time.

Wow, amazing detail on the tree branches. It's looking very organic and realistic, and it will look awesome with some texture and lighting. Nice designs on your forest creature character also, can't wait to see it finished.
