Mark Endre Seljan has entered the Master and Servant 3D.

Challenge Page (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/masterandservant/view_entries.php?challenger=6242)

Latest Update: Final Image: Final_set
http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/9/6242/6242_1116309819_medium.jpg (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/9/6242/6242_1116309819_large.jpg)

The Story

Odon starts smokin...he doesn't like that but he is weak now. His habits are too strong. But the reason of his action is not just this habit. He holds a picture of his ex-girlfriend. The picture was taken years ago...somehow he found it again...
The night has come and he find himself alone in a dirty toilet. His memories are like storms in his head...
He stopped smoking few weeks ago but in this moment he needs it...
The cigarette character is grabbing the match and bite into the fire
...leading Odon back in time...

Idea behind the scene

We live in relationships. With each other, with our environment, with nature. These relationships are affected by hierarchy, emotions,
cultural backgrounds and the aspect of view. Master and Servant relationship
is just one kind of the million and i think it does not exist in a pure form.
There are always some reasons... As humans our emotions, instincts and habits are guiding us on the way. Sometimes we're servants of our own ideas and habits...
just as my main character Odon is..

Thank you,

After a lot of work, here is the final one...I want to say my friends, without your advices and support it couldn't be done. Special thanks to my girlfriend Ivett Anitics for her tolerance and love and to Laurent A. Lemog for his wise adwises. Also want so say a big thanks to my family, classmates and all the friends here at CGTalk...Thank you again

Here we go again.. Servant and a master.
We are servants of our own bad or good habits. That's the strongest relationship (I think). The question is,
who is the master and who is the servant? Sometimes we overwrite our wish because of an old and wrong habit. Shame or not, it's true. Just play with the idea...Interesting.

Hi!!
I like your idea(and ofcourse your sketching style).
However i feel you must be careful your topic might end up being an anti-smoking campange.
I am sure you'll handle that.
Best of luck!!!
Cheers!!

Ohho...

Hi Versiden, old friend...we're in the same row again!

MetasynMan: Thanks I hope this idea will work! I have some smoking experience.

HammaJamma: I'm on the way...but busy days are coming, me and a team won an architectural competition titled "Hungarian Design Center", so after some contracts i will be quite busy. Who cares...no sleep until the end of this challenge.

abz: I can handle that I'm smoking for thirteen years...but it's a quite wrong habit although i like to smoke. Keep it up I will realize it...

See you soon...

I've cleaned up my concept.

1. Sensitive lighting: One from the floor and the other is the match's light. Maybe it could be interesting with SubSurfaceScattering shders.

2. For the better mood I've put the main character (Odon) into a narrow space like in this case a toilet.

3. The cigarette is waiting for the match and he is quite nervous, so i will add some dinamism to him, here you can see that, I bended him a bit more.

4. Now the whole upper body of Odon can be seen. His balance is a not right (just as his feelings are also instabil)
This is why he have to touch the wall with his left hand.

5. The third character is on the poster..she will be modeled in 3d, than rendered to the poster and edited as an oldschool magazine flyer. She going to be a helathy cutie, just to keep a contrast with Odon.

See ya all,
Tremo

interesting direction. a nice way to grant yourself the fun of modeling a pin-up girl ;)
the lightning could get very interesting. toilets are a very underestimated room and tell vooks about the ppl who own them.

floor light doesnt sound very logical to me. but working with gi or fake gi will solve a "dark bothom" of the shot.

very cool and unique sketching style, makes me very curious what you come up with in 3d :)

Does the cigarette have roots grabbing Ödön's lips? That is a bit strange to me. The choice of environment is good as well!

Here is the start of 3d work. Planes and mapped references as usual.

http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/9/6242/6242_1111865663_medium.jpg (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/9/6242/6242_1111865663_large.jpg)

Without planes, just simple eyes in a shaded view.

After some refinements, just basics. As you see it's just a wire.

Tremoside

http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/9/6242/6242_1111866216_medium.jpg (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/9/6242/6242_1111866216_large.jpg)

Same thing, just it's shaded now.

Tremoside

So it's just a default sss shadin' with a point- and a backlight. It was important to make a quick test, coz sss shading requires a bit different sculpting style. In my experience i used to work with more dynamic shaping if the final image will be done with sss. Actually sss generates smoother surface look.

Virtuoso

We have 3D lift off................And it's a smooth lift off at that.........Expressive and realistic tonnish caricature it is.........just what I love......Very well done mark......And nice to see your wonderful sketch get into the 3D world now.......Keep bringing it strong.......And again it's sure nice to see you once again back in action where you belong.......:arteest:

HammaJamma: So, here is the starting model. Just tell me how do you like it.

3dRaven: Thanks, good idea about graffities on the wall. At the moment it is a bit far from this point, but we will talkin about this topic later, am sure.

Hi,
She is the Pin-up postergirl on the toilet's wall. I was made it during the lunch-break at school, so it's drafty, but I think you can see what i mean.
I will place a mirror in front of her (in3D) so she will be showed from more viewpoint at the same time.
Have a nice day/night!

3dRaven

Nutz couldn't you just piant her....you already got the scetch....

She'd look cool if she was done in the way girls were painted on bombers during WW2 (sorta half cartoon shading)

Szia!
Sok sikert továbbra is!

farkasb: You were asking for my registry on hungarian forums. Honestly, am registered, on design21.hu, but I don't like their style on the threads, here at CGTalk I've found an amazing and helpful community, but hungarian forums are a bit different. Szoval magyarul nem igazan szeretem a nagy fikazasokat. Itt ha lehet senki sem fog sertegetni es megbantani a munkad kapcsan. A magyarok meg nem feltetlenul tartanak itt es ez nekem kicsit ellenszenves tud lenni neha.
Your other question was: why are you modeling in "T" pose (alias rigging pose)? My answer is simple, because i used to rig my characters with a simple biped. It gives more flexibility and in this case more expression on the body when i set the pose. The other reason is: easier UVW editing and symmetrical modeling workflow.

only thing I can even remotely crit is the shader you have for the skin, and that's temporary! just looks a little too much like wax/plasic at the moment. Tone and SSS are pretty sweet though!

alex.h: Thanks your comment! Girl 3D will be started soon!

J++ Dragon: Your words like honey. You're right about academic education of mine. Hungaraian design school is based on hand craft. I'm that you've seen my Machineflesh project. So it was interesting experience. Lot's of people liked that, but mainly those mech parts were design questions. For example, I've made a consultation about the chest pneumatic set. That is based on real life mechanical solutions not fictions. I've made a research about FESTO and CAMOZZI etc. pneumatical solutions and engineering. The other side..i have to make my diploma work next year and i hope i can develop my artificial limb topic more, coz i want to graduate with an artificial leg. So thank you for your eagle eye and sweet words:bowdown:

artman50: Thanks, am also a fan of sculpting!

bardakos: Ohhhh...sound good! I try to do my best! I hope you will enjoy it in the future too!

Virtuoso: Yes master, thanks for! Am on it!

Wintermute: Yes, youre right it's waxy now, but i don't have too much time to adjust the sss shader before texturing session. Thanks for your enthusiastic post!

rattlesnake: Jorge my friend, girls forever! Just as at Machineflesh!

Kid Mesh: Am happy too, am a servant of women  All my respect for the ladies!

Ravendsg:Am glad you like it! I try to make good turn on 3D!

Lemog: Hahhh! Yess! Pin-up fan club party on the next siggraph? Just high poly girls can enter for free... no that's discrimination. Low polys are also cute.

pigwater: You have to wait a bit, coz I have to finish Odon for first, but I try to hurry! Thanks for the comment!

mr_carl: Thanks! Am on it! I hope...

monkeysweat: So am a bit nervous now.. I have to model that girl damn good... Am under pressure...

Crying Horn: Good to hear something like that. Perhaps 3D turn can give the same or better quality of work.

3dRaven: Actually the model's came from my head, but when I finshed the drawing I was surprised coz she exactly looks like my girlfriend! So i will tell to her how beautiful is she, again and again just as always... So I am not able to give her number! Sooory..

Few busy days are comin to me, so I try to find a gift picture at home to you till i can follow the work. Just to say thanks for your attention!

It's a refinement of the cigarette character, because the previous version at the "toilet scene" was confused and had no details. It's important, coz he is the other main character of the scene. CIGARETTE IS EATING FIRE.

Here we go again...

Gunilla: So your comment about Odon was sweet to me. He is the main character, although as i see Pin-upGirl is more popular than he. Sometimet it happen. So your words about him are very important to me.

mecman: Thanks Marcelo! I try to keep up.

Deadly Force: Hi Norman, Nice to see you! I have no problems with triangles and i like to youse them quite freely. I think a lot depends on the degrees of it.

niki: Ohhh...Niki. You're too kind.

gra7: Mouth? Maybe, but i made her head without any reference, so it's just my taste.

pedja.k: Yoooooouuuuuu'rrrrreeee kkkkkkkiiinnnndddd with me! Thanks for that!

orion77: Sorry but i don't uderstand the word dozzy. I think I will pose her as you've seen on the reference. In front of a mirror. She will touch her own mirrored image. A bit narcisstical feeling. Just to follow my general idea. We are our own masters and servants at the same time.

J++ Dragon: Hah..sounds good, but it not depends on me. The other side she is still not finished... Maybe in a demo reel i will make an animation with a girl like her, but i will make a remodel if it could happen.

Brent_3D: Am glad you like it! Thanks for you eye!

hands0nfire: I always like your comments! Good to hear things from you. :wavey:

HillbillyKing: I hope the final will be finished as well. I have no too much time nowadays, so i can model just few hours dayly... Thanks about ur opinion!

ibexion: No sleep? Hey you have to! It's always important, with fresh mind you can work twise faster!! See you!

Lemog: Talenteeed? heh..

kbalage: Koszi Balazs! Remelem elegge informativak a munkak, sajna nincs idom kulon kiterni mindenre. Lehet, hogy majd csinalok valami tutorialt.

SaintT: Koszi! Yes texturing is still a milestone..but for first i have to finish my models..

3dRaven: Oh Greg...battery..what are you talkin about? Hah :-)

pigwater: Relax... am i suspicious?

Grimreaper1981: Yes-yes that was really different...

J++ Dragon: Instruments in clay? Am not enough nutty now... Maybe later! Keep it up!

Kid Mesh: Thanks, just as always!

Neeno: If you can davelop your own matrix system...I promise i will give code about her.
Red dress included...

hands0nfire: Your visits and comments are great of support! Thank you!

pixelkeg: THX

pitiwazou: mmm..thx Good luck you too!

Virtuoso: Hey Master, you makes me your charisma's servant with your encouraging words!

Crying Horn: Thanks you visits and am glad you like her cute face. I do it also....

Versiden: You should be right about cheeks, but for my eye it's not problematic now. Perhaps after a few days I will also recognize this problem with fresh eyes. :wavey:

Lemog: Heeeelllllooooo! I see that...you're always watcing this thread..it's a pleasure to me!

gra7: more will comin! keep it up!

pixeltroll2005: Thanks for!

ps.pl: Thanks, lofts are really powerful tools in max.

Deadly Force: Do you like Téa Leoni? Remember her teeth? Coz I like her.. Good to now you're watching! Thank you my friend!

Hooch: Thanks your comment. Am a bit busy now so i try to work and show the next stuffs of modeling.

Few minutes and some updates will comin....

Deadly Force:Thanks Norman!

Kid Mesh: Not too detailed, coz the finel image of her will be around 1200x800, maybe. So i keep a simple mesh just as before. Thanks for your comments! :wavey:

madshooter: You should be right about the ankle. In this case i think that won't be visible on the final shot... but i don't know yet. Of course feet are important for GI setups and right posing, but that's all right now.. Thanks my friend!

The texture map of Odon\\\'s singlet. Done with texporter. I like to use face normals output, coz it\\\'s containg more information than the simple wire output. It helps painting the texture on the right place.

• Hey Mark, great u posted this uvw map, Maybe u can help me out, the question is simple...How do u do it?? lol I have my own methods of course, but it seems u have unfolded the lateral uv's to avoid planar projection slips, and that's cool ! If u have the time, i'll appreciate your help :p:beer:

Tremoside
04-04-2005, 11:40 PM
Climax:
1. Am working on one side of the mesh for first, after the finished UVW going to be mirrored. Less work.

2. Mainly am usin cylindrical maps on the main surfaces. Head, torso, legs, arms and I like to work with planar maps on hands. Of course these areas have different poly IDs but the same checker material on them.

3. Quick cleanup in the UVW window to separate different parts. Mirror or flip some surfaces if nedded.

4. On special areas like ears, holes i'm working with soft selection. Verts to verts to avoid overlapping, but it's important to make a tidy border of the UVW, coz that can guide you through the whole process.

5. Checker material can help to sense the differencies.

So you wrote, you have your own method and just curious about how to avoid folding and slipping. I can say soft selection, cylindrical mapping, clean borders you need. But i wrote the whole method just for precision.

HI everyone,

At the moment am in a quite serious situation. I'm in an architectural project (viz) and i have to work to school also. Grohe's kitchen faucet design and Zepter competition. I can't play with the deadlines now...i can't go to the univerity coz am too busy with the archi proj. and the team leader is angry with me. No sleep again and am really nervous that I'm not able to work on Odon and the PuGirl now. This is the situation

Virtuoso: Thank you. Fun and smile forever!

3dRaven: You're right with sweat marks. Eyebrows? I will explain this topic later. You will be informed, but at the moment it would be too long and i have to make some concept refinements to show why not or why yes...

the1st_angel:  Your words mean a lot to me. Almost impossible to tell how needed these are at the moment.

madshooter: Thx, you know these are just colorups, not seriously... Lot to do to paint the subdermals, bumps, speculars....and opamaps. Just try to start somewhere.

Lemog: Am absolutely on the same opinion! I just modeled the genareal shape. Everything else will be done in textures...I hope you can help with your advices in the future. Your experience is a treasure.

DimitrisLiatsos: Cigarette burns...well. Thanks Dimi!

Deadly Force:

overcontrast: Thanks your comment. I will try to paint these stuffs...later, next life...just busy now...

Not too much change on textures, only a shading test with mental ray sss, GI, FG. In this size it was around one and a half hour to render. I was curious how can cold (blue) and warm (orange for the match's light)lights work with the shader. Also I've put on a very simple bump on it. As i see some glossy paints will be needed on the sweatin areas like nose, forehead. And of course on lips. Just a small step forward to see how can i count with time on the final scene. At the moment I think it could take eight and a half hours to do. Of course if i will make a decision about displacement maps, it's going to be much more...but no RAMs nowadays, so i have to buy new ones.

Have a nice day/night,
Tremo

damn you're good... She is just incredibly amazing:)

I have one suggestion about the guy. I think that such undershirts like he has on himself should be close-fitting, and stick to his body. In would look better in my opinion. Only in the areas with the holes it should be more loose.

Deadly Force: Norman, be careful I will tell to your girlfrand what you've wrote here....:-)
Only one problem...i lost her number...

Crazydesign: Nothing is sure...

arturro: I chosen this clothing coz i want to show as much as i can from his body. Thanks soon some setups will be shown.

ace4016: Thanks! Knees will be repaired when i will make the the final pose for her.

niki: Hmmm.. calf and knees are quite simple, sure. I can save a half hour on modeling, texturing, rigging and reposing. As you see head, hand and feet are more detailed, coz those aren't too time eaters in this case. Elbows, shoulders, knees are better to be kept as low as possible now. So the results will be fixed. Thanks for the comment!
