well, after being unhappy with many, many revisions of the "lizard" i decided that, in an effort to get this piece finished, to go a completely different direction.
more humanoid, more creepy.

Hey Jason, it's been a while. I am actually going to finish this one if it kills me. I am going to call you soon - having a BBQ...

he's starting to come together now. this is only my second real attempt at a convincing human head (the first was in the space opera contest). i think he's coming along fairly well.
the ears totally suck, but they'll barely be visible in the final composition.

just a quick paint-over in photoshop to try to figure out how the hair will work. never really attempted hair before, so i'm trying to plan as well as i can.

Hi Jason, good start  and good luck with the hair!!! also try and remember to not let the small details hold you up in the beginning...... Try to carve out the bulk of the work as you can fudge small details at the end if need be.
Good luck mate :)

thanks, guys. i haven't had a ton of time to work on this, but it's coming along. i've actually decided to make some changes to the kid's clothes. i'm going for something more like this (http://www.archivist.f2s.com/bsu/etons/etons3.JPG)now.
Looks good . What software are you using?
Lightwave, primarily. I may be using zbrush for displacements, but i haven't decided if i'm ready to wrestle with that just yet.

Yep. I'm hoping saving the fun part will motivate me to not rush through all the tedious clothes modeling.

ha. well, "those guys" are taking their sweet time with it, so not officially. but one of "the guys" said, essentially "dude, i don't care. take it home until we can work out the details. it's just collecting dust."
so i did.

you do remember I wrote that tutorial, right?
it's over at the Newtek site.

do you have specific questions?
seems to me like you are on the right track.
flinder
04-02-2005, 12:16 AM
oh yes. and i will be abusing said tutorial when i get to the detailng phase.
but what i was talking about specifically was your textures for your cloth. you seem to get the spec, diffuse, etc values just right. my cloth always comes out looking like silk. you got pretty close to a believable cotton with your SO stuff.

oh, ok. I thought you were talking about the modeling techniques.
I'll have to get back to you on the surface settings but I do remember I achieved most of the look with gradients.

still modeling the clothes. it's slow going so far.
do his arms look too short? i can't decide if they're out of proportion or it just looks that way because there's no hands yet.

made a few tweaks to the models and did quite a bit of mapping on the kid\\\'s clothes. initially, the way i was going to compose the image would only show the kid from the waist up, but now i'm thinking about retooling that, so i'll be modeling him all the way to his feet.

ahh, the lizard. i've worked and reworked this many, many times by now. you can see some of the unused concepts (there are several more) where i started to model something that actually resembled a lizard. everytime i would block in the head shape, though, it would occur to me that it just wasn't quite right.
so, i decided that, while the body will resemble a lizard body, the head just needed to be a bit more fightening and creepy. this is what i came up with .

this is kind of a modeling/texturing/post effects update.
i've got the "set" looking how i want it. and as long as i was doing a test render, i thought i'd play around with some the look i'd like to go for in terms of post effects.
the lighting is still to be determined, though.
