Abhirama Motiani has entered the Master and Servant 3D.

Challenge Page (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/masterandservant/view_entries.php?challenger=6212)

Latest Update: Modeling: My first step!!!!
http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/9/6212/6212_1113046109_medium.jpg (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/9/6212/6212_1113046109_large.jpg)

Finally i get something which is somewhere near a face...
I know there are many mistakes but i am very hapy with what i have done....just because i did it!!
I should have taken more vertices..but this i realised when i had worked on it for long and i couldn't find how to add more vertices after converting to mesh.
the method i followed..1. made a box
(i deleted the 5 faces so it became a plane!!)2.converted to mesh 3. Played with the vertices....
Any comments and suggestions..PLEASE let me know...Thanks!!

This is just the conceptual view.
The medal will most probably be replaced by a cup....magnificient one.
The girl by a masculine boy...He'll be sweating and tired yet not giving up...
He'll be running towards the cup.
The idea - "Our dream is our master"

what u see are basically 2 stick figures....oh i wish i could draw figures well then i needn't explain you what is what.
Well....to continue...the lower figure is a man who is running and exhausted.
The upper figure is the personification of his dream....the ball you see in her hand is a gold medal which this man dreams to win.
I am not yet sure how this personified dream will look like ..... if i don't get anything better this will be a lady...like a ginnie....but i think it should be abstract.....
i don't know........
please let me know if you get any idea!
Thanks......

Hey mate... its coming along... i think the second is the better of the two..

if your not to good with drawing then start modelling, i know i find it easier that way...

Best of luck mate

haha, you use stick figures too. I think this concept sketch makes much more sense on how your going to approach your concept. Maybe you could have it so that the being holding the prize is in front, moving backwards, away from the person running.

Eddie: Thanks. I think i'll start modelling.

Snoopy: First of Thanksfor the suggestion! i had already tried what you are saying...a lady holding the medal(cup)...but somehow it seemed the man was after her! May be i couldn't show it well...also i want to show complete control of the man by his dream....i want the dream to instruct him....aaah but how do i show it???

lol, like the nickname. Well, it is still early in the chellenge, and many people still dont have a final compostion of what they want; I'm not even 100% sure about my compostion. I'm sure you'll think up of something, just relax and it will come to you. BTW: you stick-figure drawing look so much better then mine:p .

hmmm, if you want to avoid to maki it look as he's running after the female "jin" you maybe just show her hands, fading into invisable... or even make her "shader" to be transparent. (a good way to achieve a nice effect is use just a very transparent material wich you define to be addidive, so it looks she's made of light. avoid making that 2sided then, cuz it will make it impossible to recognize much. :)
but thats much later. for this moment, pov is something you should deciede, there's 2 things to think of:
is he and his desire, the fight to not fail the most important thing, to show his expression, then focus on him and his face.
if his "price" is the most important, focus on it, and it could be enough to show 3/4 profile of him, trying to reach out for his price and work with bodylanguage, and focus on the whole scenary.

in my case, i like frogview a lot. illustrats a big apearance very well, allso, into a "runnerscene" the resulting high amount of motion blur on the ground should illustrate the whole movement quiet good.

stickmen are fine. imagine them to be renderable splines. (a fast way to sketch in 3dsmax besides). drawing is nothing but outlining. comes with practicing. imagine you were doing splines ;) no worries, you have much time. take it. get clear about whats your priority to show. then, use whatever helps you to define your idea. drw thumbnails for visual brainstorming. make "miniscenes" and toggle the cam around.

and most of all, have much fun and enjoy this. challenges are the best thing to learn much and get the possebilety to share thoughts with ppl who deat with the same topic.
Best luck, enjoy it and keep it up!
cheers!

Hi there angel !!!

That was very sweet of you to encourage me like that. I am working on my entry but not yet done anything worth while to show it. I am now clear with what i want....i can now see and feel the scene...however i am not getting time to make anything.....won't go into excuses...the truth is its not only my first challenge but also first proper image in 3D....so the figures are taking loads of time....also my exams have been pre-poned to May 9......so getting very little time.....
I am going to finish this maybe long after the dead-line and I would like to show it to you....

Best of luck for your entries.
Cheers!!!

I know how the time thing goes. Try your best to finish the entry, holding off untill after the challenge defeats the challenge part. But I understand if it is just a time issue. Feel free to post any 3d you have made so far. This challenge will be my first completed image (if I actually finish), and the first time i am designing orignal characters in 3d (I have loads of original characters in my head). I hope you find time to atleast complete one model. I'm sure you can do it. With practice, modeling becomes faster and faster. Now that you know where you want o go with the image and all, mayeb it won't take you as long as you think. If you ever need help, you can always contact me too (all my contact info is in my profile, although I'm rarely on yahoo messanger). Good luck realizing your image.

Hi Abhirama,
me again... :) great you started modeling! to give you a litle help, you can (with loss of quality) compress a picture with jpg compression/quality. for example, a 1024x768 image, full color, on 40%-50% should be under the (ugly) 150k limit. if not, scale down to 800x600 in worst case. that should make it to reach the limit. compress in photoshop by: save as: *.jpg
then select compression intensity, and look at the calculated size. give it 5k buffer, so you sure go under 150k. don't overwrite your originl with the strong lossy quality. make a backupcopy or, make a new folder where you put in lowquality jpg's. so you dont loose your original quality.
hope this helped. keep on going!
:) cheers

This is another background which i think is less kiddish...i this case the man will be running towards the screen...i plan to make some dry thorny bushes...lets see...any suggestions please let me know....Thanks!!!

I eventually realised that i'll have to compromise with quality...i'll try out the methods you have suggested.....also how do you post wireframes???
Thanks once again!!

I have been a fool....my entries have been of size 18k,11k and 8k only!!
I think i'll have to find out why before posting if i go to properties the file size is large...
I know its my stupidity but I'll find out!! So next time(hoping i get time) i'll post bigger(in size) and better(in quality of my work) update!!
cheers!!

The background looks pretty good; how did you do it? The face seems to be forming well. It looks like you do need more vertices; what you could do is cut edges, then you'll have more vertices and edges to work with. An easy why of rendering out wires is make a copy of your mesh, then apply a material to it that has the wire effect to it, and, if your using max, a push modifier on the mesh stack so that it is bigger then the orginial mesh, then just render it out and you'll see the edges/wires. Also, its best to show the model at 0 iterations of meshsmooth in wires. Sorry if it's not clear, if you don't undertsand, I can explain it better.

And bigger pictures next time, the contst rules say you should have the images as large as possible. limiting the size from 100kb to 150kb.

for sowing wireframes, shaded, there's 3 cool ways.

1) use shaded version of max press f3/f4 till you come to shaded wireframeview. press "g" to hide the grid, "printscreen" on the active view. open photoshop. press ctrl+n, enter, ctrl+v. that pastes the shot into a new file. crop it or color it as you like.

2) create a square in photoshop. white or light grey. select all, modify selection, boarder, make the boarder black. name it "wf_facemap.jpg" for example. now back in max, load the "wf_facemap.jpg" into a new materials diffuse colorslot. check facemap. and here goes shaded wireframe.

3) make sure it is a editable poly. switch to subobject mode edge. select all edges. hit create shape from selected eges, in the menu that posps up, hit line, on the now created shape, check, renderable, sides 4, assing any material to it you like, and render it.
looks very nice that way.

also, you can combine the 2+3... to make an "ultradelucke very odd special premium wireframepresentation"... just in case you feel like doing that :)

the new background looks very good from waht i can see!

the face is a good start. if you model on polys, i strongly advice you to use polymodeling. (editable poly) because you simply have more options on it.

oh, and for understanding polymodeling: here the link to Joan of arc, the propably best tutorial, still all over the whole world wide web on "boxmodeling creation and use of polymodeling :)
just click the link: Joan of Arc Tutorial (http://www.3dtotal.com/ffa/tutorials/max/joanofarc/joanmenu.asp)

if you need other help, write me a pm, an email or contact me over msn. :)
Keep it up and no worries, you'll do fine, i bet!

Snoopy :
Thanks for the suggestions-i understood what you want to say....for the background...i simply made a plane-for ground, gave it some noise(in z-direction) and put an image(from photoshop) as background..that's it.
Cheers!!

Angel:
Thanks alot for the tutorial it's awesome!!! Also for the guidelines i'll try to implement them.
Cheers!!

Well, I liked the concept.

One way to ease the male-female tension could be to show the female as a demi-human, i.e. a human with a few animal or spirit features...wings etc.....cliche, but I can't think anything extraordinary this time.

Also, if you replace the beautiful blue mountains with desert and high rocks, lot of heat and dust....a very harsh env, it may add to show his sufferings as a slave.
Best of Luck

Edit:: Just saw that you have just started learning, its better if you spend a few days on basic modelling tutorials online. There are many links in modelling forum here. This challenge is a big motivation to learn.
