Don´t forget to paint some blood on his hands
Maybe he just used his mouth :)

Beautifull update Bea. The clothes look great with some color and the fur is first class. I'd maybe add a little color cariation to it on the cap.

How about adding a couple of hand marks made out of blood, like the other guy was struggling against him, grabbing him a couple of times before he expired??

nice progress!! and I agree that with high resolution image GI render will make you suffer, try swith to dome light composite with ambient occlusion shader , it fast !

Hi Bea,

Fur looks great without GI, just as it was mentioned before. Only thing about lighting. Because your figure is sittin' in a white and bright environment I think you will need to add more "brightness" to your figure. But it depends on your decision, coz if you want to take an "i did this photo during my last northern travel" style you can solve it with photo settings based lights. It means the following: Usually if you take a picture about a dark thing with a bright environment your result on the picture will be more contrasty than actual life. Of course this is why photographers measure the light's strenght with sensors. Or you want to create a picture about him just as he looks in his environment. I know it's not an important thing, but perhaps could be interesting to play with.

Cya,
Mark

Ps.: Thanks about "nicotine fingertips" comment. Hands are not textured yet so this will be in my few next steps

hi!
thank you all! I´m very happy of your comments, crits and support! you´re great!:bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

Neeno: thanks!

cipher: I´m using LightWave native´s renderer actually, no idea about using mental ray (yet). thank you for the comments!

melkao: Thank you mate, let´s see how it develops. The ice culd be the most difficult part for me right now.

xric7: :) thanks for the comments and for dropping by!

Tremo: thank you for the link, I´m using Lightwave but I´ve seen this plugin exist for LW, so, I´ll give it a try this weekend. And about the photo look, I´m not sure I´ve understood you, do you mean this kind of over-exposed pictures?

ilusiondigital: thank you! I envy you because I love the beach and it´s so warm in Spain right now... oh! lucky you! saludos desde Madrid.

shinChanPu: thanks! About the beard, I´ll try some tweakening if I have the time before rendering but I prefer this kind of beard, not so high because it looked like a werewolf a bit.

Crying Horn: thank you! I´m glad to have you around commenting

Lemog: thank you LA! heheh, fur is definately a pain in the... back?

mmbenya: thank you! I like doing this kind of details, I feel they complete the picture.

JRBraz: Yes you´re right there, GI flat the volumes too much!

ace4016: thank you for the comments, I guess I still have a lot of work to do with lighting.

mecman: thank you, actually I´m not putting too much blood on the hads, because he wears gloves (that is what his right hand is over), but the left hand sure has to have some.

3dRaven: thank you! you´re always having great ideas about details and everything. There are actually some finger marks, but are not very visible, maybe a hand mark can be better.

monstij: thank you for the suggestion! I´ll make a few tests :)

alexfalchi: heheh you´re spanish is quite good! ma mio italiano e... pffff ahahhaha thanks for dropping by!

• He looks good, but i believe that if he was lonely that long he went crazy, and if he has killed many times to comply his master, he is way too clean, outer the blood in his coat, clothes seem almost new and unspoiled, it is just an oppinion, of course is only that, modeling, texturing and rendering are great! :buttrock:

He looks DISGUSTING!

You have done a hell of a good job then I guess :)
At one of your images, he is looking at the camera.. And boy does that give a shiver down your back!
I have to say that you are getting it more and more unmistakable: this guy IS dangerous and definately unstable.

It is going just great!!

Ps; I had your bearded template prepared.. But still on my laptop. Hello Beatriz... Me again.

The image of the face I downloadeed was too busy on its own and not clear enough for me to be able to make a point; So I made an ditional template aside of it that you might be able to keep around for futur refferences or for old times sake :)

I hope that this can prove some use to your projects...

Ola Bealobo, como te va? Believe it or not, it's actually easier for me to write in english and well, probably best as we all know english at this site (so everyone can read-smile). Had to come to your post as you made me laugh over at 'xric7' site when you wrote:
"Hey, why do people paint so well?"
And I am glad I did come here. Man, I thought we in the 2D part of this contest had it hard, geesh, nothing compared to those of you doing the 3D-smile. Kudo's to you my friend (amigo). Oh, by the way, I was born in Cuba and came to the United States when I was two and a half years old and well, been here ever since, thank GOD.
Well, I really like you idea (deep and scarier than heck). Man, the detail is amazing. Your modeling is surpurb and the textures... WOW. I will come up here for these last two weeks. Very cool. Best.

Hi there!

I haven´t been able to work on the thread too much these days
Anyway, THANK YOU for your support and comments.

Gordonm: thenk you for dropping by my DSG friend! I´m glad you like the work.

Dimitri: I also feel the arm to be too much like a not so good video-game, I don´t know, but I think it´s the shader more than the maps. But, I soon as I have the final lighting I´m going to revise these things I´m writing down. Thank you!

Melkao: Thanks for your support!

Deryk: Hey thanks! the environment is going to be like this, I´m trying ro make a nice ice shader, hopefully will get it.

Climax: Hi! thanks for the crit. I wasn´t thinking on this guy like a serial killer, like it could have been the first or second time he murder someone. Also I put dirt in the clothes but didn´t think too much of it, so I might think where the dirt would be and add some more. thanks again.

Black: Your help is unvaluable. Thank you so much for taking the time to draw the beard. It surely helps, and I will change the maps as soon as I finish with the cave. :bounce:

jddog: thank you mate!

Virtuoso: thanks for your comments :) and of course, come around to the progress, there´s still much to show (cave, details...)

smaddl: thank you! I´ll try to add more dirt yes.

3dRaven: well, the ice test were completely horrible, I´ll post my first for you to laugh hehehhe but, as I´m working with the lighting first, I think I will focus on the sader more and the process will be faster... there´s little time left  and still so much to do :scream:

dragondragon: hey! Qué tal? jejje well the comment on xric... was very spontaneous, I was just having a look at the 2d challenge and was like this  and so I saw xric and went directly crazy. heheh I couldn´t help it!. I´m glad you like this one though, thank you very much!

hola Beatriz.

:wip:

Hi there!
pierre, laurent, I think you´re right, I´ll try to change that a bit, I don´t want to take photos for the skin as I want it to look this way, non 100% realistic. I´m kind of afraid of changing a lot the colors on the face and each time I try I end up with few/unnoticeable changes. Who knows. Well, I´ll make another test :)
thank you!

Beatriz,

A few weeks back I sort of experimented with MaP|Zone plug-ins...
And have achieved some intresting results. It is not the easiest to use as it now to my opinion... but you get a variaty of intresting algorythmic textures.

In there site they had a variaty of tutorials and one of them was about preparing a displacement for a mass of ice.
Before reading it through I have to admit that I always made my ice shaders sort of like snow shaders... And hadn't really used such sharp displacements.
Your first attempts look much better than my first ones... But just in case you would like to have the link around to read as refference later on;
HERE (http://www.allegorithmic.com/v2/tuto_disp.htm) is the tutorial.

It is looking very promising.. infact as much as you call it far from ready, the cave looks great!

well, I´m not sure about this new look, I think I prefer the saturated old one.

I´m not so happy with this last update... it doesn´t look like ice anymore .

Lemog, Melkao, Deryk, Sonia, safe05, cipher, gui-mods, crying horn... thanks for the support!
I haven´t got much time to answer to each one separately.:(

smadll, ilusiondigital: thanks, I want the background to be bright to catch the eye´s, then the eye will follow a blood track to find this man and his master. That´s the idea.

3dRaven, thanks for the comments, next step is a blood track, some footprints as you suggested and hopefully I can add more details (an axe, a strange collection...) time´s up!

Black: I didn´t know that, it´s a great tool. Thank you so much. I tried the tutorial but didn´t get the same thing, I guess I have to try more, but I have used it for the master's ice.

hi!
no AA... but well, what do you think of the Master?
It´s not so visible, but it´s also interesting not to making so obvious because at the end of the day, everything is in his head, isn´t it?
Anyway, I´m also remaking the ice-shader because I didn´t keep the previous version and I didn´t like this last one.

Hi, Bea. This looks sensational! And I'm sure it would be even more impressive if I knew anything about 3D modelling, but I enjoyed reading through your thought process. Anyhoo. . .

I like the frost (I think it's frost) on his beard. I was gonna suggest that -- moist breath freezing on his beard -- but was happy to see you beat me to it.

I think the walls of the cave look wonderful and the ice around where the master will be looks like ice frozen over rock. The ground looks like solid ice, though and it might look better as a mix of snow (mostly blown in around the entryway), bare rock and a bit of ice closest to the master (frozen spring?)

LOVE the blood on the parka. I was going to suggest that he run around without a coat on -- that would prove that he's mad, but you've done just fine with that. The eyes rolled back in his head are brilliant.

If you're still undecided, the master could be a volleyball that he calls "Wilson".

I love this piece and will be rooting for you.

P.S. Here's a "not 'till everything else is done, probably nobody will see" detail. Fingertips turn black when a person gets frostbite.

05-04-2005, 08:44 PM
Looking really great, B. I like the direction you're headed with this. Good choice on making the master a more hidden. You did such a great job on the character that people will follow his gaze into the ice. Anxious to see your next step. :)

ace4016
05-04-2005, 09:53 PM
The ice shader looks prety good. I think the wall Ice would be frostier (whiter) then the floor ice. The floor ice is looking like water, but I'm sure you'll change that in your new ice shader. Keep it up bea:thumbsup: .

Hi there!

jddog: you´re always welcome in the thread! and thank you for the support.
3dRaven: thanks, the scene is kind of blueish but that will allow me to add contrast with the blood. Actually the color scheme wasn´t so blueish but after getting references I have decided to go on with the deep blue. And yes... I´m doing a test tonight... I hope everything looks fine together...
I likesoup: thank you for the comments. I´m writing down every suggestion to test them.
and actually I was looking for a name or so for the coat, might be Wilson hehehhe
safe05: thanks! I hope people will lead to the master also with the white diagonal from topleft to bottom right.
ace4016: thank you for the comments!

Hi Belabo... if I look at this first WIP image (this one (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/masterandservant/image.php?entry_id=40352) the master was interesting becasue is no so visible but the presence of any kind of entity is here. In the last post this entity is too much confusing on the ice i think. Probably is only a question of contrast and is enought to emphasize some lines of the main figure to obtain a more intiguing result...

just a personal pov !

Beatriz;
First of f I have to say that things are really looking alot better in the last version...

But even still I think that there is a situation from direkt lighting. Especiall in your one previous post, you can notice that the ice is sort of like the ice that you would see in a glass of water. Cleaned off from the chips and bits and flakes and all that...
So as in the environment you have the character set the ice is more compact snow like.

I DO like your results you got, And I find them personally good enough. But for experimenting sake .. have you tried a DGS shader on the making? An aditional control over the spec and reflectivity should help by it.

Maybe you have already read this or saw it at some time.. but a small link where they experimented to get the ice effct before in the earlier methods: JustForRefference (http://graphics.stanford.edu/courses/cs348b-competition/cs348b-03/ice/)

Looking great...

Very good update Bea... ice is better now... the only thing which disturb me a little, they are the blocks at the bottoms of the cave, which do not seem to form part of the same decoration... but it's perhaps with a little DOF that's will be better...
Anyway, you're in the good way

Hi!
I worte a long post answering you all and I lost it... grrrrr

ok!
I have some updates that I could not post...
Thank you all for the comments!
I´m tweaking the ice more. The entrance is ok, the front part still not. and the master... that is a problem because when I make it look not so "out of the fridge" the master is lost.
I have to render, I´m so pressed by time!.

Black: special thanks for your unvaluable help and link (I´m reading it now) and though I don´t use Mental Ray I´ve been reading to have an idea of what it is and I know how to traspose it to LightWave now.

Lemog: thanks you! those blocks are not finished and might be a special part of the scene if I have the time, like the place for the "collection". I leave DOF for the compositing :)

jddog: thanks! again... when I make the ice more transparent it doesn´t look like "internal frosted". mmmm needs more tweaking I guess.

cococknight: thank you, I imagined it to be more white too but after seeing references... I decided to go on the deep blue. The mood is a quiet, lonely and cold place. Loneliness should be the most important. Have any idea or suggestion? I´d glad to hear it of course.

Gunilla, daddymack: thank you a lot!

Well, I wouldn't try to copy what the fotos show just because they are physicaly correct. It's all about believability. You can make a lot of changes to that ice and still let it look believable. Also I think that for those ref pics they wanted to achieve this blueblue look of the ice and made special arrangements. It's only those professional fotos that look like that.
But look at this one for instance: http://www.peterwiltonjones.co.uk/expeditions/austria2001/images/fullsize/icecave.jpg
I'd say: fit the ice as good as you can to your original idea without loosing believablility.

hi!
I´m gonna render the fur separately after doing some tests, I have to render it in one segment and that´s why.
Basically this is it in the cave. You also can see the blood track, I hope to post a general overview without the fur today.

hi!
well a few minor updates after so long... :) I´m working a lot and testing a lot, preparing things for the render.
i will render things separately in various computers (not mine :scream: hehhe) and then I will compose everything. I´m planning to make an occlussion pass in a separate scene too.
mmmm oh yes! and the macabre collection is going to be a bunch of seagulls' heads stuck in the ice by their pick. That way I don´t turn this man into a serial killer, it will be more evident he´s mad and also his need for feeding will be very readable.

cococknight: I see the point and I agree with you, but I decided to go on the blueblue because I liked it more. I think it makes the place to look like an special place, never seen before and that enforces the idea of the man being an axplorer and not a man from a village in a very cold place. Anyway, I´m going to test a bit with a wither hue because I see that way the man is not so lost in the whole, althought the background would be so plain that might be a little boring. Anyway Thank you very much for the intelligent comment.

Hi!
well this is the thing render without fur, the Master is not final. But at this point the important part was the cave ice.
So this is the first test.

Test after Fabian comments, no AA. Master is another different surface without SSS...
well, after this test I saw the servant was lost in test 01 in the huge blue mass, but I didn´t like this snow look either, I prefer blue ice and I proceed to test 3.

this is a mix between 01 and 02 (remember I´m talking only about the ice cave) , no AA.
This is going to be the look, the deep blue will go just on the servant part to give depth and not to lost him.
What do you think? Any comment welcome.

just a quick test.
The render 01 (thought it is not final one) under the influence of another two renders.
a- same scene with white surfaces and same lighting with monte carlo radiosity.
b- same scene with white surfaces and no scene lighting but GI.

I used this two layers in multiply mode with different oppacities. I think it looks better. Comments please! :D

Hi!
thank you very much! I know it´s a bad time to make comments as all the people is stressed with the deadline, so I really appreciate you dropping by.

I´m rendering the guy tomorrow, and I´ve been rendering the "oclussion passes" these nights. So, I´m working a lot on this final stage but still not happy with master's ice, now I´m trying to quit SSS and qork with thickness transparency and refraction blur. I hope to post something tomorrow about this.

Dimitri: thank you very much! actually I´m going to render the fur separately because my computer isn´t powerful enough to render the fur in one segment as needed.

3dRaven: yeah! thanks! I´m not forgetting such a good idea, but I´ll make the breathing as a post-processing effect.

Pierre: don´t worry I´m not sleeping, it´s on the contrary I´m working hard, but the fact that my computer don´t have acces to the internet makes a bit difficult to post whenever I want to. good luck to you too and thanks!

Fabian: thank you very much for your support on the entire process and the comments and all!

safe05: thank you! I´m glad to hear you liked my decision on the blue cave, I don´t know why but I feel the image is loosing power and emotion, maybe it´s just that I have seen it too much these days :scream: ... or maybe not ... glups :)

For me the "A" version is better and i think the "cave's" entry is a bit bright. It's too strong on the picture now. Of course you will change some things in post fx, but i don't know how you thinkin about that. Those bloody patches are awesome. Perhaps some more of these patches are missing in front if his knees.. There i sthe corpse so there is the blood. If i were you i would modify a bit that blue field in the middle( under the character mainly) coz that is too homogen now. I hope you can use my comment...Keep it up! you're almost done! Just few steps...

Hehe! Sorry, I saw that seagull's head and couldn't resist!

About the ice, I would probably use the walls and ice blocks on #320 and the ground on #322 - using masks to mix both versions.
The first image on #323 looks more atractive (but I would paste half the shadows of #2 background over it).
Btw, are you going to put a shaft of light coming from a hole in the ceiling?
I know the light from outside would bounce off the Master's ice but the lighting you did puts me in mind of direct light from above (and it would be cool, too, I think - bringing more impact on the madman). Just my late 2.5 cents! (http://www.cgtalk.com/misc.php?do=getsmilies&wysiwyg=1&forumid=0#)

Hi B...I surf the web for a bit and come back to see not one update but a whole bundle

<Rant mode>

The mix between 1 and 2 of the ice cave looks best, although the character lighting in it seems weak. Tweak that and I think it will be fine for a final, try maybe adding an extra light source....maybe from the master??? Sort of like he's awakening. I'd maybe try twisting / smudging some parts of the pic in post sort of like a distortion of reality...the dudes going insane so maybe visually show it in some way??

</Rant mode>

Hope some ideas may be of use

hi!
I´m having tons of problems to render the fur to the high resolution, so these days I´m basically solving that. fortunately I have had some time this evening to tweak the scene a little, I´ve added an extra light to light the servant. Also I´m testing another shader for the master, it is looking good but some artifacts appear. I´m making a render test, and I´ll try to post it tomorrow :)

Lemog: thank you for the support, I'm writing down your comments for making more tests, hopefully with the final appearance soon... well it must be soon... time´s almost up.

Crying Horn: thank you so much for the comments, I wasn´t very sure about this new version because #2 looks great but I didn´t want to put away the blue tint.

cococknight: thanks! I won´t go for the white appearance finally but your comment really helped me to get this new version, which I like best.

melkao: thank you! it´s strange you calling me lorenzo as that is a boy´s name hehhehe, but my surname too at the end of the day. thanks for the support, again, I´ll go to a mixed version blue/white

Deryk: thank you! I´m tweaking the lights a bit, I hope you like the new version (still unposted) more than this one.

Tremo: thanks for the support, the entrance won´t look so bright, in fact the back-background is more visible, the point is that the renders there are a bit mixed. Anyway, I want the entrance to looks bright, to catch attention, so the viewer can see a dead body and an axe and start following the blood track to find... the horror! LOL

Sonia: thanks for the comments! I´m adding a new light to give more contrast and bright to the servant, it´s not from above but looks good, you´ll see. Also, well I hope I can post final decission soon because I can´t pick one thing from each render as I would like too because each render can took ages to calculate.

3dRaven: thanks! distorsion can be a point but I´m not sure if I´ll have the time to test  , I´m a bit stressed with time. I´m already rendering but as I have changed some things (light and master's ice), I might be rendering again.

Hi beatriz!
it's been quite a long time since I posted here, I've been watching your work silently because there's nothing really I can crit here... it's a very very good work! :applause:
I am with those who think it may be too saturated-blue... you know, I think that when someone has walked over a piece of ice repeatedly it may turn greyer, dirtier, while all that blue colours we've seen in the photographs could remain mainly in the walls... I've never seen that blue-ice effect on the floor, just on walls, but hey, I've never been somewhere that cold, so my opinion might not be very trusty...
anyway, you're doing a great job here, it looks amazing, good luck for the final days!!! (how much time is left? it can't be a lot...)

look nice beatriz , some point I notice is shadow , fur look it don't have self shadow and in man's mouth too , if you decided it's final render , I think in mouth you try to paint over it in photoshop , and about fur , (if you seperate fur pass) you can try effect drop shadow and blur it ! but if you render it in one beauty pass ,I think you have to have some paint work , good luck beatriz!

3dRaven
05-13-2005, 10:57 AM
Good to see a close up of him. monsitj's right he could use some more shadows. Maybe add an AO pass with a dome light on the character and blend it in to get some self shadowing...times short but give it a try on a seperate pass if you can spare a minute ;)

hi!
thank you all and sorry I cannot make much comments on every of your threads, but I´m so stressed with the render... I´m making this in pieces in several computers, at home, at work and at friend's home... you can imagine this, it´s madness.

melkao: thank you!

pierre: thank you! La experiencia ha sido genial, yo creo que repetiré porque se aprende mucho y es muy divertido, aunque absorbente.

smadll: thanks!

Tremo: thank you! I´m glad it works!

elmasfeo: hola! thank you for the comments, I´ve decided blue ice for floor and that also because of the composition, I think it gives depth to the overview. But I like to hear your oppinion.

Monsitj, 3dRaven, Crying Horn: I agree with you on the shadows but I´ve already rendered a self-shadow pass to compose, the thing is that I haven´t composed it yet :D , so the image above was "composition" just because the breathing and the fur, that is in pieces. The fur is not a separate pass, so I´ll try my best with photoshop but I cannot make any promise, it has self shadowing anyway but I guess it needs more (but I cannot render it again).
The thing on the mouth... I just don´t know what happened there, looks like he has a flashlight inside the mouth, I´ll try to adjust it and render just this little piece, I think that will be easier than photoshopping it.

manikantkujur: thank you!

Damn.. I just did my stunt again! Lost my long comment.. I guess I was being wanred by above to not criticize your work this much!
Wel I aill just try and remember it all...

Firstly I HATE to have to catch up on staying away. it envolves alot of reading and concentration  You have aparently done a lot on your side.. and the results are rewarding..

Beatriz; I hate to say it but in each and every one of your renders the mass in then ice doesn't really look like a mass in the ice... We really don't try seeing it there unless we read the context and already know the story. It just looks like a block of ice with usual refracctions on it. Ones that he would simply mistake as to be a form maybe.
And I really doubt that you would get anywhere closer to making the master any more vivid than this unless you would go very extreme in the transparcies.. I would personally suggest that you leave it and go on with everything else in the scene leaving the master to be a something to be handled with post wok.
Since even the simplest test renders for a physical SSS are not renders that take seconds o resolve. Not to mention the manner you are never too sure on how it is going to turn out.

What you can aditionally do is to like take a render of the guy in the masters pose with a blobby membrane having a water shader/material applied to it. Later on to post this onto your final image. Sort of using the Zdepth value as a mask on blurng the image.
It is usually best to have things rendered after presenting them as they would be in the real world... but unfortunately the digital world has a much diffrent set of phisycs.. you are going to have to try and gind ways around things.
I remember a very good example in the making of a movie called "The Young Sherlock Holmes" where a stained glass figure had to come to life and try to kill the preist (He was dreaming it).
Well what happened was that NOTHING worked.. it just did not look like glass, as primitive as the 3D tecnology was then to compare to now, ray tracing had simiallar grounds... And finally they had to apply the character a metal material and the postwork supported it to look fantastic, and impressively real.

As for your renders posted.. I have to say that I REALLY liked Post#321 (http://www.cgtalk.com/showpost.php?p=2261833&postcount=321) as I believed that Fabian was VERY right on his comments. But unfortunately it took too much from the activity. Sort of left it real, but plain.
I think your solution of mixing the two was a good enough solution. Unfortunately you decided to really take up a challenge.. not that even in a high budget movie like "Ice Age" not often was the ice as convincing.
Well good luck on it all.. the details you are adding in are really showing itself.

One last thing more about the beard again.. I have to say that he looks alot better and definately disturbing.. But his beard doesn't suggest that he has been lost of long enough to go mad..
Think of it like a centimeter per month.. maybe a little bit less.
What may have happened in his case that his saliva dripped down to his beard at times and simply froze then broke off. And you have well introduced a rough cut to give that... but there should have been a few bits that should be some what longer.

Ok ok.. I am stopping now. I hope you don't hate me... If I spend this much time on an image it is usually because I find something valuable in it.. I hope you see it such more than me being a loud mouth again
The over all details are literally fantastic.. you have come a long way and every efort shows in the image. With ignoring what I say, you won't loose anything from the impressiveness so far!

Sonia: thsnk you, the ice is not the part I´m more happy with but... :) and the recipe... it´s not cooked (the arm) LOL hahha I´ll try to make some explanation on the shaders.

Wandddo: thank you!

pierre: muchas gracias a ti tambien! ha sido un placer ir viendo tu trabajo. La boca la voy a retocar, porque parece que tenga una bombilla dentro. Y el render es muy lento porque tiene muchas imágenes como texturas, para el pelo y para todo. meaning that: thank you, it has been great to make the contest and to participate, and I´ll try to fix the mouth in compos.

Black: most important thing among others: I REALLY appreciate the comments, any type good or bad, hard or vague. So, I don´t hate you or whatever.
About the master I have thought on that possibility too because appart from what you said, the id is not visible, so... yes, I´m doing something about that.
The overall ice... as I said to Sonia is not my favourite part, it has been fun doing and testing but I wish I did not spend so much time modeling but... next time :) .
This weekend I´m rendering the image at work, so until monday I won´t be able to see the result (yes, I have taken the risk). So, I´m making masks and preparing the composition at home, this means I cannot render the fur again
BUT, I´m very happy with the result and the whole experience, I have never participated in a wip contest before and I find it extremely funny and interesting. Thanks to people like you, helping and supportive, among other things.

Oh yes, you will! This is really wonderful work, Bea! That ice turned out just beautiful and your master is really very creepy ... not a very "girlie" pic which is cool, I like it! :D

Well,
I´ll try to explain a bit what I've done in composition exactly, so please see thie picture and the next.
The most important thing I´ve done in post is the master, it wasn´t very visible with the SSS shader so I went for a superposition of two renders.

well, so here you can see what exactly I did with the pieces.
I basically try to achive a more contrasted look and to get rid of the grey hues in the ice.
These kind of adjustments I did in photoshop but really composed the image at digital fusion. As I had to render in pieces I had like 5 or 6 render pieces to match and that´s easier using a compositing program.

Just some details of the final composition.

detail of the master.
Look at his arm! he´s got the same id than the servant, just mirrored...

the master is himself, like I´ve commented before it´s all in his imagination. He has to justify these murders, and he has to feed himself...
The master in the ice is both things, he´s imagination (a mirrored reflection distorted by his mind)and a metaphore of his sane him being buried in the ice.

bealobo

The servant is offering this arm to his master that commands him and makes him feed.

bealobo
05-17-2005, 10:07 PM
As you already know, servant is master too but here we can see his mad face.
The tough conditions and the loneliness maked him to go crazy, he was hunting seagulls for feeding but now... now he has a master that commands him to get better food...

Hello!

The story:
around beginning of 20th century, this man is a brave explorer that goes into a isolated region somewhere in the ice routes. He lost his companions but managed to survive. He feeds with seagulls and anything he finds.
But the isolation and the tough conditions make him go insane.
He´s starving so he imagine this master in the ice that commands him to get food, his master is feeding him.
He becomes so mad that he hardly distinguish anything so he fetches the people that comes up.

The relationship:
Domination is the main relationship here. The master dominates the servant and make him do things he won´t in normal conditions.
I tried to push a bit the concept and made the master and the servant to be the same person. As the servant has become mad, he imagines this master who talks to him and commands him to feed with human flesh. Obviously it´s all in his head.
He, as a human being, needs a justification for this terrible cannibalism so his insane conscience invented this master in the ice.

My aims:
I tried to show an isolated place with lots of contrasts: color scheme (red/blue), details (lots on him/few on the environment), the peaceful environment vs. his aggressive expression ...
Also I tried to show this master as being the same person than the servant by both clothes and fur and the id in the arm (blue and green). I put it mirrored to enhanced the idea of this master being a reflection (a reflection in his mind) and also a metaphore of the sane man he buried in the ice long ago.

My experience:
This has been a great experience and a great challenge, I´ve used techniques I haven´t used before on a such a high level(z-brush + displacement maps, high-res maps, making of ice, digital fusion for compositing...) so I´ve learned a lot.
Also I think that completing this image has been a challenge itself and I´m glad with the result too.

I want to thank the people who has been supporting and helping me, you know who you are:
my boyfriend, my family, my friends and colleagues at work, my cat... THANK YOU! without your help and support this wouldn't have been possible.

and of course, people here at CGTALK!
THANK YOU SO MUCH!
I´ve learned a lot from you and you made me think more deeply on the concept and the image. You deserve my admiration and respect. you rocks guys n' gals!!!

So... when's the next challenge??? :D

BeaLobo;
Knowing the troubles I had in my last week and this that followed I hope you would forgive my distance I have kept to your thread as I have for many others. But like a few that are special and dear to me.. keeping from yours was not something I would have wanted.... you have always allowed me to be a part of your creation process and I feel very horrible to not have been there always.

I have been reading through your still pressing efforts on fitting the master behind ice. And well am very happy to see now that you have finally imprisoned him in a block of ice.
It was a brave attempt and most would agree that it was overcome well. Very well infact!

Other than that; the man looks disturbing, the hand looks disgusting.. the blood soaking into the ground looks fantastic...
Knowing all the efforts you had to run this entry through to get it to where it is now, I can definately say that it doesn't get much better than this...
So as important as learning is... it is time for the viewer to let this image go.. and for the 'Beatriz' alone to figure out what she would have done diffrently had she started it all over again.
It is a wonderful entry with a very disturbing era all through out. I enjoyed following up to it, and I am definately enjoying looking at it now.

Good Luck dear Beatriz.. May the entry do it's part with the judges as good as you did yours

dragondragon: that´s a pity you cannot see the image! but I´m glad you´re around. Good luck with your entry!

Vampeta: hi! It´s Beatriz actually, Lorenzo is my surname althouthg it can be a male´s name too (not my case). Well, thank you for dropping by! good luck to you too (thought I think you might be on the finalists anyway) :applause:

Milkman Dan and AIR: thank you! I appreciate this kind of comments even if I have finished it (I feel very possitive about it), I agree with you on the lighting, needs more drama! thought I´m happy with the result.
I have learnt a lot from the challenge and one of this learnings was the time distribution for a work like this. I spent too much time modelling (relaxing) and left very few time for lighting and shading. I think it needs more contrast... I´ll keep working on stuff like this so hopefully next time you can critize a different issue :applause: (meaning that I had improved)
btw: the black dots are seagulls' heads stick in the ice, finally I put them but I shouldn´t have done it that way, it´s odd and unreadable but... next time!

Black: I´m very happy you´re feeling better. You don´t have to worry for the last days because they were very fast, I couldn´t even post for c&c. Thank you very very much for your kind words, I think you´re right and I´m doing that myself, I´m taking a little distance and analizing what would I be improving in both technics and plannings.
It has been a pleasure to have you around commenting and encouraging, you already know that
I find it funny you putting nobody´s special over your avatar as not only for me you´ve been one of the most special people all over the entire process, again... thank you!
