Robert Mack has entered the Master and Servant 3D.

Challenge Page (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/masterandservant/view_entries.php?challenger=6196)

Latest Update: Final Image: Thanks a mountain CGTalkers
http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/9/6196/6196_1116460782_medium.jpg (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/9/6196/6196_1116460782_large.jpg)

Well here it is guys:) The result of many sleep deprived evenings... Massive thanks to all who contributed to this process with me... I have grown in both my understanding of my tools and my need to express aspects of humanity as art...
Priceless...

here's the link to the full image... 'Cindy' 3072x3840 1.2mb (http://www.brainchilddigital.com/cindyfinal_daddymack_big.jpg)

Here's where it started...

The main jist of it went something like this..."I am attempting to communicate the relationship between a little girl-and the things she fears/ is driven by. In the image I’m creating it is hoped that upon first viewing the audience will interpret the girl as the master and then, as they study the scene, grasp that she is actually the servant of the creatures in her head…
I hope to convey a real sense of power yet helplessness in each individual in the image…that is my main challenge"

And here's where it went to...

My current story for the image goes... "My Servant is a seemingly innocent little orphan named Cindy whose parents hated her and cruelly tormented her before they died in an ‘accident’ just over a year ago (their house mysteriously burnt down while Cindy wasn’t in it)…Well, as a result of listening to her subconscious demons (her masters), Cindy has just set fire to Bentwood, the orphanage where she spent her last few hellish months…We meet Cindy just as she is leaving Bentwood… She feels empowered to be taking control of her life again, in the only way that she and her demons know…by fire…she is on her way to ‘visit’ her grandma, who she wants to 'repay' for putting her in the orphanage after her parents died…

It was consistently a major goal with this image to initially ‘trick’ the viewer into thinking Cindy is in contol... and then realize that it is her demons that are driving her toward more evil deeds, within moments of viewing… Also, if I've done my job well, that Cindy is as much the master of fire 'as a cleanser' as she is a servant to it... It was my way of communicating the blurred line between a human as individual consciousness, and subconsciously driven actions..."

Thanks CGTalk and all associated for giving me the vehicle through which to envisage, and then realise this piece, like I said before, it's been a priceless experience for me, that has taght me much, every step along the way... Cheers;)

And thanks to all my imaginary friends who helped me so much, and in such a personal manner... You know who you are!! Cheers ;)

Woohoo, spent some time scribbling out rough concepts for this piece and here's the first notable direction it went in...
http://www.darkspider.org/%7Esumdumguy/cgcomp/mackserv1.jpg
added 'vibe' test
http://www.darkspider.org/%7Esumdumguy/cgcomp/sketch1aa.jpg

Basically it will be a pic of a little 'innocent' girl taking her demons for a walk...I will attempt to communicate that the girl is just as driven by her demons as they are pulled along by her, hence steering this toward my original goal of blurring the line between...

I plan to develop each character in this piece conceptually as much as possible prior to 3d...I need 3-6 more 'demon' concepts...any ideas

Nice concept, first thing I heard in my head was "lions and tigers and bears oh my!" from the Wizard of Oz. I guess demons that each represent a different childhood fear would be interesting...closet, under the bed, heights, spiders & bugs, things that bite, etc. Just an idea...good luck!

Hey DaddyMack. Great concept - like the fact you are trying to show that we are as much driven by our demons as dragging them round with us! Cool.....! Good luck and look forward to seeing your ideas progress. Claireabella

I love the sketch. When I first saw it, i thought is was about a girl and her imaginary friends, which would have also been cool, but the little girl with demons is a great twist. I'm also drawing a blank on childhood nightmare creatures at the moment. I'll try to come up with something.

Very good idea, that your monsters are rather puppet-shaped, not ugly-fantasy-creatures.

The best one is the left-sider, at first I thought the cufflink-eye is a pignose and it's a giant-pig-puppet. Try to see from this viewpoint. :D

Good luck!

Hey you guys thanks a bundle for all the support and suggestions...Means much to me;)

I've pretty much decided on the feel for the image I'll make, I want it to feel really ominous, as if the girl has great power that we, the audience should fear, drawing all the attention to her...and then the second the audience connects with the girl I want them to feel empathy for the girl because it's become obviousto them that she is the servant of her demons... should be most challenging for me to convey this duality successfully...But I'm on it...

here's a quick 'vibe' test
http://www.darkspider.org/%7Esumdumguy/cgcomp/sketch1aa.jpg
I also hope to convey a sense of movement in the final, as if they are approaching us...
Thanks again all

I liked the "cart" idea hauled by the boy (or monster somehow but still lovely). I think you must develop that idea.

I mean lovely for the girl and the monsters but idea that having demons as masters here not suits. Infact at the very first moments when I see the scene I thought that she is a cute beast tamer of cute beasts :)

cool idea, I can see several possible directions for this, I look forward to seeing what style this image takes.

03-26-2005, 03:09 PM
nice sketch and its coming along well, should be interesting to see how it develops in 3d. the only niggle for me is the position of the girl, she seems so close to the centre of the composition that she may as well be in the dead centre, hopefully that makes sense. anyway, good luck, and im looking forward to more progress.

Good!!! The contrast between the girl and the monsters is significant...I am also playing with the monsters but seeking for pureness instead of contrast!!!

Thanks a mountain you guys for the encouragement and criticism ...I was wondering if the feel was interpretable from the vibe sketch and I guess it must be...I'm really going to have to pull my proverbial finger out and nail down the characters and workflow...soon...I've some decent concepts in my skull, I'll make the time to share them tonight.
I'm having to be really disciplined on this image coz I know it's got a heart. Usually I'd already be modelling by now but I want to really nail this conceptually first for once, so sorry I'm being soo slooww...
Again Many thanks

It starts...I've hit Maya now and hopefully can gain some momentum with modelling. I just realised while building Dead Ted that he will be my first ever character not purpose built for animation...I'm really warming to the freedom of not having to pay so much attention to topology for deformation...Let's hope it's not habit forming.

Anyway here's Dead Ted's Head, I'll try and develop the style for the piece through him and then onward into the rest.
Thanks for looking;)

Hi again all;)
My main man Dead Ted is starting to take his form... I wanted to make him look like he was made by madness, as a compaion to madness.
Cindy made him for herself over a few weeks by cutting bits off other kids teddies, when no-one was looking, and stitching them together to make Dead Ted, her only true friend, and, the 'good guy' of her demon collective
...this is getting bent...

You could actually market the toys of the characters once the challenge is over! Are we allowed to do that? Or are we sighing out the copyrights for it?

Wow, thanks again all you folks for the props  It really motivates me to push my boundaries further...I gotta admit that the Dead Ted Model looks more than a bit beyond my normal skill level, each time I look at it, it sorta doesn't register that I made him... Maybe I'm possessed or sumthin...dunno...but I hope it lasts the contest out whatever it is

Haha grooshka, I started work on 'Bent Barbie' last night, she's really anorexic and has had a few too many haircuts, she also will have a slightly unhealthy obsession with makeup...the model still looks too poor to post tho...

neeno... I'm taking a little break from rigging and animating at the mo...but Ted may get reborn after the comp. Cheers

LOL Kanga, It's a worry aint it...

Great work on the franken-teddy there

I'm reminded of Sid's "toy constructions" from Toystory, with the barbies having holes in their head and tufts of hair poking out...a very cool theme. It also beings to mind these demonic looking toys from one of the past siggraph shorts (cant remember which one); There was an overly made-up barbie, and this twisted fat jack-in-the-box that wanted her. (It's incredible how much evil we can infuse our childhood playthings with!)

Well done, keep up the good work!

I can't wait to see barbie messed up. My little sister use to have barbies hen she was smaller, and I remembered that one time a dog chewed one of the dolls forearm right off; maybe you can add that to the hacked up barbie.

Why don't you just go and get yourself a Barbie.. and see how much you can damage her?!

Hey why not get a few?!!!

The model is really like what you had described her to be. So this is what an even more anorexic Barbie would look like.

Everything is coming along very nicely!!

Whoa, nice doll. It's a perfect parody of a real barbie. I think I might make the bottom of the pelvis, between the legs, a little more curved (right now it's a tad too perpendicular to the ground for my tastes), but I love how she has ... ahem... an exceedingly wide pelvic area, just like barbie probably would. ^-^

(No offense to anyone who played with barbies as a kid.)

Back on the Teddy, since it's from parts of many teddies I expect that the sectons will get colored differently? If you've already gone over that topic I apologize for bringing it up again, but I'm too tired right now to go back and read all the posts. ^-^

but I have a warning for you! don't loose your composition! I once was trying to put all different characters in one peace [fat, tall, skinny, sexy, ugly], and result was, well......... it siply suck't! it was 2d though!

Where are the crusts on some parts that the plastic cought on fire. Or wait I guess that would be a thing to do with bump or disp maps..;

Well she is looking like she is well dress now to be able to tag along

Alex, an excellent point...ulp...see next post

Blackdidthis, Texturing phase will be great fun;)

Ace, me too I reckon bb is well near done and Flat Cat will have his day soon:D

Eddie, from one who mimics the great Giger your comment is more than a little ironic

Jan Mark, with the absence of Zbrush in my life I tried to mimic a Zbrush workflow (from a tutorial) in Maya using sculpt poly tool and soft modification...:wip: It was kinda intuitive but there was a helluvalotta Ctrl-z-ing going on... I'll look into zbrush soon, it looks really streamlined from what I've seen...

Hi again you mad cg folk
A busy day in the life of Barbie, she umm seemed so umm... innocent this morning. Her pose in the final image will be very similar to the bottom left shot.
My main concern at the moment is...have I gone too far this time?

wonderfull |visual - emotional| connection. linkage web in your concept between all the chars should be of extended/melted plastic threads going out of the body of the doll. just first thing I thought after looking into your wip images. just .. so nice :)

Greetings again all :D
The third character (of a likely nine) for this piece was born today, we affectionately call him Flat Cat, he still needs work so I thought I should share him for C&C. He came to life without a sketch or reference so he's probably gonna have issues in his life.
His place in the final scene will probably be most like the bottom-most image.
Thanks for the look ;)

Awesome Barbie and Cat:eek: !!!
Well, Barbie seems to be a bit exagerated with deformation (your concerning was right!), cause in it's condition it's dificult to get what is what (ok, in position which defined as final it looks not bad).
But Cat is just cool! Maybe just his flat part could be more "flat" to make spectator notice it better (if cat will be positioned to camera as at the bottom).
Go on - became very curious about this http://www.cgtalk.com/images/icons/icon12.gif!!

...I'd really, really appreciate anybody's comments on what they feel each individual character expresses to them so far. So I can tell what directions I need to take in the next steps...Cheers...Mmmm let me see now;

BrokenTeddy (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/9/6196/6196_1112154851_large.jpg); bulky, soft, strong, possesive; loyal... dull and actually dumb.

PamLee after an xtreme diet (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/9/6196/6196_1112704436_large.jpg): Stupid, incapable, shallow, obedient, non-aggressive, unfortunate (Sort of like a Jinx), loyal.

HamstersRevenge (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/9/6196/6196_1112788727_large.jpg); Aggressive, self-centred, clever, vengent, in sighted, dangerous, independent, old, manipulative, highly capable.

I really don't know if these were the sort of remarks you were looking for. If such I hope my first few impressions that instantly crossed my mind would help you at understanding a bit of what their impact might be.

Everything is going great. Cruelly awaiting for the crusts and the tire marks!

Your answers are pretty spot on to my original personality goals for each character...So... humbly... thanks good sir! BTW thanks for also correcting my retardedness in tossing the links up;)

What I'm really questioning at the moment is what each character 'appears to be feeling'
eg the first Flat Cat was clearly feeling some... umm ... pain , I tried to make him look (feel) as if he was reaching out, in an attempt to find relief from that pain.

I guess it's hard to get well without the whole pic in mind, I'll post a layout mockup soon, hopefully that will help convey my ?s better

Thanks again BlackDidThis, good sir, Anyone else wanna take a shot at what these figures may be feeling???

Hi all, Flat Cat is back after another round, I've made him a bit more gangly, run him over a few times, and given him some minor detailing. His view will be similar, as usual to the lower shot. I think the teeth make him look more angry than in pain...not sure...and I'm feeling I might pop his eyeball out so it hangs, and dent his head a bit, just for fun:)
Any suggestions?

hehe, just saw that actually. The teddy seems like a dependable, loyal cahracter that has been put back together as a reward for being there for the girl all those times she needed him. No comment on the barbie, looks like she got what she deserved. I did think flat cat was clawing for help when I saw it the first time, poor kitty. It's 5:21 am, my brain might not be working right, I should go to sleep (but most likely I won't).

BTW: flat cat looks even better and more ran over now.

nice concept, and really GOOD models. me like.

BlackDidThis
04-07-2005, 11:08 AM
I wouldn't exactly say that you are off the track in making him angry. Ever hurt a cat by accident, you'll sure notice that it gives you a sighn to not dare do it again. So he really looks like he just got HURT bad.

But if you are going for the after math.. I think you may want to squint his eyes a little bit and pull his expression to more pityful. Think of Tom from Tom and Jerry. There is a heap of expressions.
In any case I would say you have him shouting it out.. the pain I mean. Actually thats also what got me to say vengeant I guess (Those were listed without thought)

Just to quickly update to your question. I think the teddy has well adapted to his pain and is living with it, The Barbie tends to be unaware of whats happened.. though she notices that her movements are a bit limited. Well I think I gave the cats details above.

I hope this helps a bit aswel. And thank you very much for your kind words.

Black

Edit: As much as I am curious on how it may turn out... I think the eye ball and the head just MIGHT be too much.. just a little. But to experiment. It may be better than I fear.

Hi again all
Here's a (really) rough layout of my concept as it currently stands. And this is my spiel I'm crafting it by...

My Servant is a seemingly innocent little orphan named Cindy whose parents treated her terribly before they died a year ago, (their house mysteriously burnt down while Cindy wasn’t in it)…Well, as a result of listening to her subconscious demons (her masters), Cindy has just burned down her orphanage, she is still listening to them (her demons) when the ‘snapshot’ happens, she is on her way to ‘visit’ her grandma, who put her in the orphanage after her parents died…

It is still a major goal for my final image to initially ‘trick’ the viewer into thinking Cindy is ‘taking her demons for a walk’, and then realize that it is them driving her toward more evil deeds, within moments of viewing…

I can see that the overall composition is in serious need of refinement, unfortunately composition is one of my weaker areas ...Any suggestions?...
I've got scooby snacks...

I love the falt cat a lot (five stars):buttrock: . I don't know why but I find something funny in his suffering may be the way you've modeled him, I mean the design, that is just so great. Like also, the work you've done on the barbie.
Good luck to you:)

Nice comp layout. The way the eyes are in the concept sketch on the stand-in girl and the way she looks like she is looking back, seems like she is the servant and they are the master (to me atleast, I felt that before reading the description). Also, the teddy seems to be pointing at her like he's telling her to do something. I think the key to getting the viewer to notice that the demons are the master is in the girls expression (facial and body). Now we know why kids do evil things. Can't wait to see what the next model will be.

Feels somewhat like a movie poster. Have you tried it in lying format? And maybe with a lowered, a bit tilted camera? There's a definite Tim Burtonesque feel to the scene right now, which I like. Darn, I like those toys - can't wait to see little Cindy evolve

Hi DaddyMack. Yes, I can see it will be difficult to convey that it is the demons driving Cindy to do her dastardly deeds....... can only think that maybe all the demons have an arm outstretched towards her with the palm forwrds to show that they are guiding/pushing her forward to her next crime spree. That's as much as my brain can think of that at the moment. It's Friday night and it's been a tough week. :scream: Hope that might give you food for thought. Good luck. Claireabella

Well, it seems pretty clear that I must be getting at least one thing right... I didn't realise so many people out there had 'cat issues'... Thanks all you folk who commented so positively on what I thought was a pretty average idea... I hope I can keep these characters getting better and better along each step...Only 6 more to go...

ninox.. Cat issues.. Thanks man

Mr.Waka.. Coming from such an obviously bent brain, your compliment means a great deal to me..Thank you, I really enjoy your work too

ace4016.. Thanks dude, you've always maintained a consistent honesty and insight into my work... I really appreciate it... I think the next character will be hannibal Description (http://www.darkspider.org/%7Esumdumguy/cgcomp/Mackmasters.rtf)
But I'm gonna really try and nut the layout before getting too far into him

cjewell_01.. Thanks, Dead Ted is still a surprise to me...

suk-grigorij.. Cat issues again.. Thanks, I look forward to much more bentness to come

nix0r.. Clearly you're cut from a different cloth too mate.. but I gotta say... cat issues..

mecman.. Thanks dude... I'm a bit overwhelmed trying to grasp the final comp...You guys will know when I do..

eddieellis.. Thanks mate...Possible cat issues too.. LYW mate

tilite.. I find a good deal of insight in your posts around the comp...Thanks for the look in

alexfalchi.. thanks again Alex, glad you like it

jmBoekestein.. Yeah sorry my friend... I really just kinda mocked that up to nut the placements out for myself...(They're standing on a polysphere) I'll start some modelling on the evironment then hopefully my goals will start to become clearer...... Me hopes medicine makes my imaginary friend happy...and model...Me likes my imaginary friend...Thanks JM

Gunilla... I was going for the whole movie poster feel...I'm trying to entice the audience into 'reading' the image past their first glance. So your comment makes me smiling muchly... As for the angle and Burtonesque nature, I agree wholeheartedly...that angle needs way more tension...I didn't even know who Tim Burton was before people started pointing at me like that (:blush:shame on me..) I'm gonna hire Nightmare befrore xmas today for some style tips. Cheers mate!

mmbenya.. Thanks man.. Dead Ted was the pace setter and style model for this piece, I hope to be able to do more and more justice to the rest of the characters.. Thanks

Claireabella.. Thanks for the insight Claire, I'm thinking that I might make a really fat, angry, burnt Mum screaming in her ear to add to the impetus of her drive... My next character will have his (straightjacketed) arms outstretched exactly as you suggested so good call! Thanks

I really value and appreciate all the insight and support from you brainy folks
Keep it coming...:thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:

I love the concept- it's a refreshing break from the way most of the 3d entries are going (mine included :) ). Modelling so far is excellent (I hope you put some fur on that zombie teddy), & the current layout could do with some rejigging. The background is overpowering the characters at the moment, & I reckon it just needs to be a simpler & slightly smaller silhouette of the building & hillline against the moonlit sky, with the flames & smoke giving some extra rimlighting. The characters could fill most of the frame, & the girl in particular needs to be bigger & more central, since she's the focus. You could give her a sinister look with a ground-level keylight, tho I'm not sure what the source of that could be. Reflected from water? Or maybe you don't see the ground or her legs...

DaddyMack
04-09-2005, 06:32 AM
Aaaahh Thank you `mb... If I'm gonna work on something for this long it has to mean something to me... That's why I went with my 15th concept instead of my 1st

Re the keylight I'm planning to have the dragons wings sorta shadow the demons, as if he's sheltering/ keeping them together and have the wingline cast a shadow that cuts off just before it reaches Cindy...sorta encasing her in light and giving her a really bold shadow of her own which will reach toward us beyond the bottom border. There will be some bounce back-up from the dewy ground to light the front of Cindy in a sinister way as you described

Fur is too expensive (Maya complete) I'm researching alternatives...

Silhouettes and rimlights for the background...Pure genius!!!:wise:

Cindy needs to be bigger...agreed, cheers...When reading through your well thought out insights I thought I could have her cover most of the bottom frame and be holding a lit match menacingly toward us. I'll try out a few sketches for feel

Saved your thoughts to my guideline text file:)

Thanks for opening my eyes to some really great possibilities `mb...I am in your debt

:wavey: Hi all you other folks out there :wavey:

Thanks for dropping in

Just a thought on your composition, Cindy HAS to be the focal point of the piece where your eyes go first then lead them to the deamons and at the back of the pack an overlord cracking a whip towards Cindy, or some other means to show dominance. Love the Idea.

What often also helps is drama, this is especially true with stills. If your main lines are horizontal and verticle things stay static. If the sizes of your components match each other the effect will also be calmer. What you need is more diagonal lines and dramatic pose to suggest a force,..... not only in this pic but in most compositions. Stretch those ropes, have her lean forward, use overlap, use every part of the buffalo!

Here you could make the moon huge like fill half the background to get things creeped up a bit.

Hi and thanks, as always you guys are blowing me away with the effort you're willing to contribute to my work

handlebar.. Thanks man, it's getting there... I can't wait to see how thing progress too!

altebanger.. Cheers, I agree that Cindy needs to dominate the image, my main difficulty at the moment is to achieve my original objective of 'tricking' the viewer into thinking that she is the master of these creature before realising that she is merely a servant to her demons...Should keep me busy for a while...

Kanga.. Thanks man, I had an early sketch where she wass really straining to pull them along, but it kinda lost my 'trick' factor...From your help tho, I add to my list..."must be able to see up Cindy's nose"...and "Moon needs to be menacingly large"...Also "I need some serious focus on my lines.." and lastly..."buffalos just aren't used in metaphors enough these days" I get your points, and will implement to the best of my abilities... Thanks again good sir ;)

Now it's back to the new drawing board...
I'll do my best to add these suggestions to my already overflowing to do list... Thanks a bundle you guys, Your brainspace, and the time you spend on this helps me immensely

figure I take the time from my work and check out some of the awesome stuff going on...

I flipped through your thread and check out your progress and the wonderful idea you came up with. Very Original indeed. I especially enjoyed the bear you modeled, that is a great and very creepy design. I enjoyed the cat also, laughed a little after seeing it. But remember he was flat..lol. Your doing great expressing everything in your characters. Keep up the work. :)

For you last post, I suggest 4 cause it seems more intriguing as a scene then the others.

it's nice to see your next character keeps style with the others. but I would exaggerate his bigger eye even more so it looks goggled (dunno if you're catching what I mean). (kinda like this => :) ) it will compose well imho.
