Latest Update: Modeling: ZBrush displacement tests

well it's been almost impossible to get any work done on my entry....I'm really not sure that I'll get my entry finished on time but I'll keep posting updates in the hope of some feedback ;-p
Here's my first dabblings in ZBrush....when I say first, this is about the fifth time that I've done this because I couldn't work out a decent way of exporting it...but it's the first thing that I've worked on in ZBrush. I've used the head model that I created in Lightwave, I tweaked it a little just to put a little more expression on the face but it's pretty much the same model, converted to an .obj. Once I'm happy with it I'll be using my newly purchased Messiah:Studio to render the displacements. Obviously there's a lot more modelling but I need to get my workflow sorted with all this unfamiliar software first....yikes!

Hoorah & gulp!:scream:
well I figured what the hell If I'm gonna post anything on CGtalk it might as well be for this:D
I'm not too good at drawing which is why I started in 3d....my mind just works better in 3d, so expect the concept sketches to be dreadful. My initial idea was to do a scene based on a model I began work on ages ago & never finished. I won't be using that model but it gave me an idea of what I will be doing.....here goes.
I want to create a scene based on an old guy building himself a servant/friend/companion. A kind of Frankenstien...making a body from other parts. The scene, as I see it in my head, is the old guy staring lovingly at the face of his (as yet unfinished)creation...maybe touching it gently. He has made this "creature" as an experiment but subconciously as a companion. He has spent his whole life working towards this & as a result has become a recluse, alone with no one to share his greatest achievement. This is his child that he never had, his closest friend.....by spending every spare moment making his "servant" he has become the slave.....geez, get me going all deep!!!:D
I can see myself becoming the old man working on this, I just hope that I can create what I see in my head. I only hope that I can get enough time to work on it. First I need to get some reference images of the old man, I have quite a vivid image of what he looks like but I really need some good photos.

Good luck biliousfrog, realise your concept, it's bent, bent is good, it's good.

well here's a very rough concept sketch. I'm not much of a pencil artist as you can see...I've actually traced over my pencil work as it was so rough that I'm not sure that anyone would work out what I'd done . This is just to show composition, I'm really not sure that I could draw the characters. I might have a go a sculpting them or at least the old professor guy. I'm not great at sculpting either but better than drawing & it will give me a good 3d reference too.

here\'s the start of my modelling. Not much to show yet but I\'ve only had my lunch hour to get something done & this will be the most time consuming part for me. This will be my first, resonably realistic, character model. I\'m using a free image from 3d.sk as reference for the old man, not to copy but just to get a feel for the type of face I want to use.

here's another update....I thought that the eyes were much too large so I've made the head larger. It's still not correct but it kinda fits what I can see in my head style-wise...believable but not exactly realistic. I'm trying to keep a really clean mesh but I'm finding it quite difficult as I've not made anything like this before...I know the theory but have never put it into practice. I'm thinking of using ZBrush to create a displacement map for wrinkles etc....I've never used that either but have been offered the chance to try a friends copy.....I do hope that I'm not taking on too much....yoinks!

don't be embarrassed or i'll be too :)
nice start. not sure about the composition. they are both in profile what make me fill some distancing (hope i explain it well, sorry, my bad english..). guess it'll be more easy to decide by playing the camera with 3d. it's a great opportunity to try new methods. havn't try zbrush yet but it seems to be a great tool.
keep it up :)

thanks for the input. I'm not sure about the composition either. I might try a shot from just behind the "servant under construction" looking at the "master" with the face of the servant reflecting in his specticles. I can't visualise very well in 2d, I've got two posable figures that I try composition with but it doesn't always work.

well here's another update on the old professor guy. modelling wise, I think he's pretty much there, I'm planning on using Zbrush for displacement to make him look older. I've had a bit of a play with Zbrush & I'm quite confident that it will do what I want it to do...namely add some age to my model. I'm thinking that I might be able to use the same base model for both the old man & his creation & just put different displacement maps on it....that way I get to save some modelling time & also it would be cool to have the master making a younger version of himself.
I think that I'm going to change the composition so that it focus's more on the face of the old man, hence only the upper torso has been modelled so far. I will get a new composition sketch up soon showing my new angle.

I've worked on a better composition & I think I'm getting close to what I wanted. As you'll notice, when compared to the first sketch, I was having a good drawing day....well for me anyway.
Any comments/crits welcome.....I'm getting bored of talking to myself.....anyone?

nice work so far, but the ears look a bit too close to the front/face, or is that what you want?
