Storyline
I've decided to give the storyline in the dialog form between two creatures: Attono (Elder - the one who is turned his head to the buildings) and Stilla (Female - The one who is embraced by the girl)
Stilla: …A conflict has happened between them, but we are not responsible for it
Attono: Yes I know...
Stilla: Then why did you bring her here?
Attono: Because I still have a respect for their species.
Stilla: She won't survive with us, also the Tribe will be very negative to your decision... you know that...
Attono: We'll see..., I am sure my opinion will be enough important to the Tribe...
Stilla: Why so much respect for their species... they are so stupid that they almost killed themselves...
Attono: It's not because they’re stupid, it's because they can't control their knowledge and understanding. I am sure there is still a chance for them to get better, because victims like this girl now knows how important that is... every species in nature deserved to live...
Stilla: Remember that if we take responsibility for her, it will mean serving to her, it's the only way she may adapt to us at least for a while...
Attono: Yes, but also remember that this deed may bring neutrality between us and them...
Stilla: Maybe… you know Attono, you are very naive... just like other animals…
Attono: I just want to be right...
Why the antlers are so big?
Well these antlers grow all their life from the birth till the death. When they are young the size of antlers is just about the right size to use them like weapon, when they are getting old the antlers become very big and useless but the size of them shows to other tribe members the age of their carrier. That’s how they know who are the elders and leaders of their tribe and they respect them…
Inspiration and idea processing
When I started to think out the idea for my sketch I wanted to make girl playing near a group of some big creatures and in front of image it could be seen the destroyed city… I wanted to make animals but not ordinary, because animals in our nature wouldn’t take care of people. I came out to elks idea because these animals look strong but sensitive at same time. I was then inspired by image I saw some time ago which name I found out quite recently (thanks to Deadly Force) it calls “Mirador” (painted by Rodney Matthew). I wanted to give them grand and strong look also I was zestful to make the cloudy and moody atmosphere to give lonely and scary feeling. I made a lot of compromises and changes during the progress, but I made it and the final result you can see now…
I want thank all of you who were watching my progress:

Hello everybody,
This is the first CG challenge, so I am bit nervous... I will really try my best and I hope you will notice and give some support on my work, also I want to excuse for my english, because sometimes it may be very poor...so good luck to everyone and let's start the game! :)
Ok now as you can see I am very terible drawer, so I'll try to explain my idea. I decided to make a little girl and the creatures which looks like elks mixed a bit with antelope and aurochs. The full storyline I'll give a little bit later, cause it's still has some leeks. But basicly those creatures brings the girl to take care of and protect her. Also my scetch gives just a basic look of my image because I could't express emotional look of all creatures. The girl will be very naive and playfull, and the creatures will look quite big, strong, wise and bit mercy. Those things on my scetch on the left are destroyed buildings.
I'll start modeling now, and in time you will fully understand my idea...

Ok, here goes my first model of creature, which will be in the scene,
I think I'll make four of them in the final image.
Since they still don't have horns behind them, they may look like horses for now, but as I said it's going to be a creatures which will look like elks mixed with antelopes, the model it self will also still unfinished it need lots of modifications, so it’s total WIP. The final version of the creatures will be very fury, all black and with white neck (my dog's collie influence :) ). That’s it for now c&c are always welcome.. more progress soon…

Attack of the elks! :)
Great model, nice volume!
How are you going to solve the fur? Are you going to use fur, textured or modeled?
CryingHorn
03-28-2005, 06:07 PM
Hey thanks for support guys it does mean a lot to me...
Björn: I am going to use fur, and texture it, the colors will be black and white with a bit brown...

somehow a disney-interpretation of Master&Servant...not bad...don't care about your drawing skills (i'm even worse). Your concept sketch transmits enough atmosphere...good but work it out in 3D!!

Thanks for your kind words guys, I am happy that you liked my horns even though I am absolutely remaking them, because they look too unnatural, too big, and too childish. I want something long and stylish.
Anyway here is my model of my creature. I used references of antelopes and Irish elks, with also adding something mine :). I didn't ad much details because fur will be put anyway... also keep in mind that he's neck and body will become bigger when I'll ad fur...
That's all for now, now I am going to finish my horns and start the girl model... See you...

Here is my new version of my promised antlers. I was looking at Irish elks photos and wanted to make something like that with a more handily, and and beauty, your c&c is welcome indeed, because I'm not sure if this will be final version.
For now I'll go for a girl modeling...

They're actually kind of starting to remind me of moose. http://www.alaska.com/about/photos/ This site has a couple close up views of their antlers if you'd like to take a good look at how they're put together and textured.

jarvetu, DaddyMack, flinder, chripy16 thanks for your beautiful words.
MattGyver thanks for your link, yeah since you said now, mooses can also be a reference ;)
About antlers, I am still confused with how they should look, they are still not what I want, so I'll just leave them in peace for now, I'll back to them when I'll make a concept scene.
I liked soft curves of your first horns, maybe make something between: new shape horns with some curves in style of first.
CryingHorn

Thanks for a tip ps.pl, I was thinking about that too, I think I'll just make a compromise between those two styles...

Hey there!
Those mixed creatures look really well done without the antlers, my opinion that is.
Maybe you should go for a different form on them or smaller maybe.:shrug:good luck with the challenge.

A nice idea. Wanna see how it develops. Frankly at this stage I cant any advantage of one horn over the other. I dont think that such differences would become apparent until later.
The ambience of your sketch looks really promising. Kinda other worldly fairy tale/post-apocalyptic.

jmBoekestein thanks, I'll keep that in mind, like I said Antlers - later ;)
Jack Youngblood yes, fairy tale/post-apocalyptic kind of a good description for my idea.. thanks for seeing that in my image http://www.cgtalk.com/images/icons/icon13.gif
Miezis thanks for your support, I am glad that you like my style.. oops modeling or whatever... no stylish words... ;)
Bealobo , yeah first antlers's shape are more gentle, i'll keep that in mind when I'll be making my third version :)

that modeling is smooth and clean, but I think the ear it´s out of place, like too separate from the face. The ear should be put at the end of the lower jaw.

I am trying to make her look like she is about 8-10 years old, I don't know... she still looks a bit too old for me.

Maxko Thank you, yeah, maybe you are right.
I also going to make a long shawl around her neck, which will be dirty as her clothes shoes and her self. Her hair is going to be curly and black. The jumper is still a very wip, needs some details and fixing, The pose of course will also be different...
see you soon...

This is one type of destroyed buildings, I am still not sure how many I'll make them, I guess another 2-3. I know this looks like lego for now, but when I'll put some textures on windows it will look much better... Well, here goes my fur beta version :)
First I tryed to make fur using the way vectors, I got lots of troubles, looked absoulutly stupid and etc... and then I decided to go with splines and hair system, so I had some work making (79) splines across all his body, anyway the result I think was worth of it...
Also his snout and ears will be fured seperatly, it's not the final. I didn't do anything with shading yet too, so now his fur may look like silk... some thiner, length, color, clumping and curly maps in progress now so I hope they will give some more natural look on final him...
c&c as usualy are very welcome :)

Great modeling. The texturing is good too although it would be nice to see more imperfections in her face such as freckles, moles and blemishes for example. I guess as you go on you'll be adding dirt and stuff to her face.
The building looks very cool too although, at that level of destruction, would there be a single pane of glas left on it...?
Good work, keep it up.

Playing On lighting settings... I guess with with buildings forest fog and etc it will be more obvious to see everything... also here is some grass and firs progress.... For Firs I used planes with texture of pricks which were made with fur...

Nice grassy update :D Hope your comp can hadle it at higher resolutions (furs get worse the bigger the pic) I'll have to see it on my CRT but the LCD I'm watching now makes the colors look a little washed out on the grass...I'll get a second opinion later on today and get back to you :)

Hello again, here are the buildings, completed... I hope so...
The wires and similar things are modeled, the holes in the glass and other things are made with textures, all those 3 buildings have 351871 plolys, I tryed to make as less as I could...
I'm quite happy with them. I wanted to make them look absoulutly different because they have to simbolize destruction more in metaphorical way...
Uff.. the time is not my friend this time, I have to study at university and do some works for it, which I already had to present and I am lating, so I feel like my head is going to split up of those all different jobs... but it's quite good to know that I'm finishing this image, now I'll leave my pc to render clouds, so some progress soon, and now, I'll just go for a sleep so good night too all af you...
can't wait to see final comp.
3dRaven

Great to see how the destruction evlolved Andrius  Came out really good. I'd maybe do something about the hole in the middle building. it seems to be a bit drowned out. The interiors look good on the left and right ones...maybe try a tweak on the middles material to make the hole stand out more?
Keep at it this scene just keeps getting better :)

Tremoside thanks Tremo, I hope it will look better and more emotional in progress... :scream:
3dRaven yeah I hope so too, today I tryed to render grass, left creature's fur and girls hair including hair shadows on 3200x1856, (that's a resolution my final image will be), so pc almost died, but it maded! acctually at images end the file crashed but it saved the image... I'll make some tricks on that thing with fur, I'll render it partly and the compose it together, so I hope everything will be ok...about the buildings... yeah.. maybe your right, when I'll make a proper lighting I'll tweak those textures...
oddguy thanks, actually I have some basic sketches drawn of final antlers so at least I know what to do now...
lukx me to mate... I feel tickles when I think about that...

this is coming along nicely!
It is a very emotional pic. Congratulations!
just curiosity: but how many hours did your machine spend rendering at 3200x1856?
CryingHorn
05-08-2005, 11:35 PM
Well, bea I don't know how much hair there were totaly in the scene but it took about 40min, The hdd was making so much noise that I thouth it will die :argh: I got the low memory warning few times but surprisingly the rendering continued with just some missig fured areas and finaly when the image was completed it crashed... I won't even try to render more then one elk together with girl's hair and grass again...

Yeah. When smoke starts pouring out of the computer it's usually a bad sign. And pouring water on it just makes things worse. :) It's looking good, though, so it may be worth killing the computer over.

This is a part of my background, I think I'll tweak a bit the reflections on buildings, but basicly this is it. The clouds are completed, I made them with after burn and the far clouds simply made with xenofex plugin for ps,
also I'll make the proper moon, this one is just for seing the whole thing together... I rendered it in original size and left for a night, so the whole thing took 4.47.10...

wow!
these updates rocks!
the long hair was something I wans´t expecting (again, but believe me, I wasn´t) and it fits perfectly, I like it a lot, besides it is very well done.
The skycrapers and everything looks just fine, and the textures.
For me the size of the horns is too big, for me they should be thiner or either shorter. Just personal oppinion.
great job!

Hi !
I was wandering around the threads and founded yours.
First I must say that this is some really good work you're doing here.
The creature especially immediatly reminded me of some very well known Rodney Matthews painting :
a cover for the band "Magnum" named "Mirador".
Here is a link :
http://images.google.fr/imgres?imgurl=http://www.scanraptor.com/artesan/isofrm2/images/D50-Matthews_Rodney-ISOF024-Mirador.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.scanraptor.com/artesan/isofrm2/pages/D50-Matthews_Rodney-ISOF024-Mirador.htm&h=768&w=1245&sz=187&tbnid=eh3qgIyXhcEJ:&tbnh=92&tbnw=149&hl=fr&start=1&prev=/images%3Fq%3Drodney%2Bmatthews%2Bmirador%26hl%3Dfr%26lr%3D%26client%3Dfirefox-a%26rls%3Dorg.mozilla:fr-FR:official_s%26sa%3DG
this is a cool influence !
Good luck !

Hey thanks deadly force, yes I have seen this painting before (was for some time on my desktop as a wallpaper before formating disk ;) ) and yes it had a lot of influence on my elks idea, that's great that you gave me an author name and link, cause I didn't know it and I was going to credit it as "some time ago a wallpaper..." in the final description, thanks

Great work man!
I love the horns very unique.
With the animal's neck so small they look like too massive for him to support them.
Maybe do something with the upper body to indicate more strength to carry those bad boys.
I like this so far though.

05-12-2005, 06:30 PM
Great updates. The long hair looks great. The antlers look a little on the heavy side...maybe make them stick out more to the sides...for a moment I thought it had only one :D...
Try adding a gradient to the sky so the clouds more far back fade a bit...it might give some more depth to the BG
Keep at it

HELLO,
This is my quick composed right side of the image.(w/o post effects, and minor things like moon :) )FINALY RENDERED... uff... Now.. first of all I want to say that I have never rendered anything huge like that, I used 1024ram and had to make lots of compromises. Of course each thing like grass and creature were rendered seperetly, and most of troubles I had with the closest one creature. The rendering was crashing until I finaly splited him into 3 peaces... The head, the body, and legs. I rendered them seperetly, and then combining them made him complete.
The forest far is made using planes and putting on them firs textures,in all there are 5 different fir types, then, some fog and here it is...
Now I'll go for right image side...
see you...

My one and only crit, (and this depends on what you are trying to draw attention to) is that the girls face could use some tone variations. Maybe a hint of shadow on the left side and a bit of a highlight on the right or on the hair maybe.
Anyway, congrats a great pic, it is one of my favorites. Especially since it is a break from chicks in leather and dudes with swords. :)
