We(humanity) have become slaves of our own creation. More often than not we are driven by are emotions, puppets of our own raw feelings. One of these is rage, more often than not a product of our own frustrations created through a society that we ourselves devised. Remember we created the concept of measuring time, we created the working week, we set the guidelines for what is acceptable behaviour, and more often than not it is our struggle to acheive all these benchmarks that has created a growing frustration within us; a palpable inner beast that is conceived by our emotions and nw seeks to control us... This early sketch is an attempt to portray this symbiotic relationship visually.

I like the sketch on the right most. Although the one on the left is an interesting angle. Keep going.

Starting to get a better feel for the composition and where i want to go with this. I want my character not only dominated by his symbiote master but also to be affected by his more subtle enviromental master. I will create a swamp like graveyard of old technology that symbolises the society that we created that has in turn controlled us.

Coming along nicely. I think you're on a cool idea. Are the creatures going to have pupils in there eyes? Might be cool to have the little guy have his eyes rolled back in his head like he's in a trance. Only one small crit, the big guys right leg looks a bit too twisted around. I dont think you would be able to see the back of his calf muscle in that pose. What kind of colours are you thinking?

i like these kind of ideas. the ones that you have to portrait with sumbols, and that, in my opinion, is not an easy task. i'll follow your entry to see how it will turn out. and nice sketches btw;)

thanks...nice call on the leg. I'll have to fix that. Thinking of using blueish/gray kinda washed out hues, with a bit of electrical energy around the master character.

Yeah, I like Groadys idea about the eye's rolled back in the head. It'd be like he's not using his own eyes to see, but is looking through the eyes of the servent.

Just finished the lineart on the symbiote create that controls the hulking muscular servant. Have also started to work on the colour up of the servant. The intention is to eventually drop all the black linework out of the finished product.

Just threw a couple of the elements together to show a rough feel of the layout. Have now included a skyline on the horizon line that although will be used to symbolise a city is in fact discarded electrical appliances. The finished skyline will be mainly silohuetted.

Yeah, it's not sort of supposed to be a direct reality, more of a symbolic one. A lot of the elements are purely symbolic, i.e, the servant character is not a real representation of a human being:- he represents raw emotion. The master is symbolic result created by the society we live in, that in turn manipulates our emotions, and the world in which they reside is a festering reflection of some of the elements that make up that society... wow, that was either really deep or just complete guff... you decide, haha.

The slave character is now starting to take form. I've now pretty much dropped out all the linework. It still has a few touches to go but i think i'll move on to the other elements and do the rest of this when i put together the final composition.

Thanks Aidenn,
guess i had a few inspirations for the master character; everything from aliens to a jellyfish. I kinda liked the jellyfish idea because it would give the impression he was malleable enough to morph into any shap he liked.
I'm currenting colouring him up to achieve that jellyfish like feel.

You have very nice touch for a line art, but it seems to me that coloring this will be a blast, right?

Anyhow, the idea is good, concept is great, and sorry to say but coloring is only good! But im sure you'll do fantastic work in the end - good luck

First of all, great concepts man! You'r B/W is awesome, I like you'r comic style. About the colors, I would try to not use so low saturated hue's. It looks especially greyish to me atm. A tip I got from a very skilled artist a while ago was to try to avoid black whenever you could in you'r shadows. For example if it's a sunny day, and you have a tree in you'r image. Instead of painting the shadows on you'r treeleaves dark green (and or use black), paint them more of a dark blue color. Study shadows in pictures and you will discover what I mean.

Oh, and about shadows and lightning, decide on a lightsource (or two) and place shadows and highlights according to your lightsource(s). Currently it seems that there is to much light on you'r character.

Hope this helps! And good luck, I will be watching you'r progress! :)

Starting to make progress on the master/slave creature. Might now look at working the background. Figure the character is about 60% complete so i might leave the rest of him till i place him in the enviroment and then have better control of light etc.

Struth! Moving along nicely. A Few comments... The two guys don't seem to be blending very well at the moment. I think you need to loosen up your colours around the point where they are joined. By that I mean the blue guy seems to be glowing so you need to translate that light on the big guy's body. Also the blue guy is sitting behind the big guys head right? I think you need to make it darker around that area to give it a little depth, where the claws meet the shoulders too. Also try using a harder edged brush on the blue guy as he's getting a little soft. Don't forget where your light sources are in the pic. At the moment it seems to be directly above both of them, so translate that on to your surroundings. I'm sure you know all this but I thought I'd be constructive for once.

i liked the concept drawing where the master was forcing his fingers inside the head of the servant (or thats what it looks like). also i'd made the big dudes head wider in the face and mouth, like = instead of "
good alien tho

It's kind of late in the development process but i've decided to scrap the original idea...it just isn't working for me. I guess i'm looking for something a little more dramatic. Here's a concept i'm toying with where the master is a videogame player and the slave is the character within the game. Any thoughts?

This composition is much more interesting that the last. Though I have 2 issues with it. One is that the foreshortening on the big guys fist isn't quite right. It looks like his left fist is much bigger that his right. The other thing is that gradients are bad. I'd stay well away from them and infact stay away from the paint bucket all together. I realise you're testing colours and making a pallette but gradients just look cheap. Try think more like an oil painting. Be loose and don't be too afraid to let colours and edges blend together. Give yourself just 1 hours and go sick with a bristle brush and try block it as much as possible. Build up the colour don't just colour in the lines.

hehe, I love it... But I think there's something that you should change - a goblin that shoots, he seems to calm and I don't like his pose very much... Ha ha ! get em big guy !...Well i guess I should be telling that to the girl since she's in charge ! LOL...I love this style ! Do you plan to leave the line art in or are you going to color under it till? Its looking very good so far, maybe work on the right hand...the hand no squeezing the life out of the alien dude...That hand looks alittle small..Also, this is just a suggestion but why dont you try to mess around with the color scheme in photoshop? maybe a grey blue sky might work better or even a grey red...This is an action scene so you want the color scheme to fit the tragic drama going on in this scene! Also maybe a worm's eye view might suit this picture alittle better ! AH! I have this picture going on in my head right now that i'm invisioning, I wish I could shoe you ! Well anyway just keep trucking along, looking good so far!

Hi there, I would suggest desaturating it a little and work on some really strong highlights and dark shadows to really show depth, and value. Also the texture you have on the walls, I would vary it more and resize some of it so it doesnt look like its pasted into the scene, especially on the box at the bottom left. Keep it going your doing great! Good luck and have fun!

This is coming along great man! But I agree that you should lower your saturation on some parts of your image. Normally you should try to keep by limits of 50-80% of saturation when blocking in your base colors. And I can't help to think that perhaps a darker sky would help bring contrast in your picture, and improve the focal point towards the girl and her servant. Which amongst all the action you got going on here, is the important parts right? :)

Perhaps a pale dark blueish sky would help us read your image better? Or atleast lower your value of black in that yellow sky, to a more red/brown dark black sky I think? Just some ideas though. Keep it up man!

Have decided based on some advice from you folks to redo the sky. I intend to completely repaint the sky to look more menacing. For the meantime though i have just played around with the hue and saturation to see how different colours effect the scene...am thinking of going with a grey red (any thoughts?). jeromoo
04-24-2005, 12:34 PM
I'll go for the third one, mate. But make it at night. Night time redness with the moon planets shining dimly. Then the light from the dim glowing moons will be the main source of light for this scene with lots of shadows ala Doom 3 :) Might help to produce a dramatic and menacing effect.

Ahoy there Redfrog.

Personally i'd be tempted to use the blue sky - slightly darker, i think it'd give the best downlighting when highlighting your characters. add to that the cool tones of the metal framework, it would give the laser effects better definition, with the glowing reds against the cold blues...you cant fail :)

I love the mask on the servants head, nice. One comment though, the foreshortening of your scene seems a little off balance. If you take the guard towards the back of the scene, he isn't that much smaller than the one in the foreground. The right hand of the servant however, seems disproportionately small in comparrison to the one holding the "enemy"

Or maybe its just me. Looking good though, nice one

Wow Craig, nice work. Wasn't sure at first in your change of direcion, but it's coming along great. Nice color job too. This style works alot better then your previouse style. My only crit (which is perosinal) is that the background isn't complimentry or contrary to your character....what I mean is...The color of the Night sky doesn't matter, all those bright colors look aweseome. It's the color of the Troll that'll make him stand out. A grey Troll in front of a Grey structure is hard to define. Try making him a classic Green or changing the background into a blue grey (there are plenty of shades of grey from warm to cool to chose from).

Whatever you do I bet it'll look cool. But I must say again, I love the way you've colored the Troll. Looks like he's a Rock Troll or something. All those cracks and everything look impressve. Good luck friend.

i vote 2 because it looks more naturally in this case. he is focusing on that guy he just grabbed so the other hand would be somewhat loose and open like in no 2. i think... unless he is going to do something to the other guy with his other hand so the 3 one might work as well in such situation. hehe i feel like i caused more confusion than help...

Opinion seems to be wavering towards version two in the hands (thanks folks) but i have yet to apply these changes to the main pic. Have however added some objects to the forground and have lengthened the pic by adding more sky to help fit the final proportions...will still crop a bit in the end.

thanks for the comments, folks.
I am planning to maybe add some effects to the sky... tossing up whether to add some tracer fire and a couple of spaceships (any thoughts?). May also add a bit more rubbish and detrietus to the scene, maybe a loose panel on the wall, exposed wiring etc.
Still have to fix the hand as well and am going to try relooking at the goblin's pose (thanx The Wizard).
Still three or so weeks to go in the challenge...figure i'll use the most of them to tweak this image still. Thanx again to everbody for their comments.

Its a nice piece of work, really like the linework on the main figure. Not too sure about the sky mate, have you tried playing with the colours, just a tad too close too the main figure's costume. Good luck!!

actually demonicoz is right. now that i think about that the color of the sky is kind of too similar to the main figure. we did vote for this color of the sky but now i think that maybe you should try something differnt. either on the troll or the sky...

in response to some of those comments, may look at readdressing the sky... will do two versions, one where i alter the current sky and one trying the blue/grey that was suggested in the earlier posts... thanks for the comments (looks like i'm not so finished after all... will give me something to do for the last few weeks of the challenge)

Here is a blue sky version due to some comments about the red sky... not sure about this one myself... also plan to do a darker red version (will include in my next post)

In addition to the blue sky variant, here is a dark red variant... am still not convinced that either of these work as well as the previous version... commets at this stage would be most welcome.

i've had it with the sky on this illustration, have a changed the colour, style, brightness and now saturation to come down to three final choices... i've finished mucking around with them... now it's just a matter of choosing one and then i'm finished.

Hello Mr Redfrog sir, *tips hat*.

Personally, I prefer the version with the blue sky over the others because it makes the characters stand out more. The red and orange BGs seem to wash out the Slaves clothing slightly... well, moreso in the orange version. But I'm all about the characters/people, that's why I'm incapable of doing decent backgrounds. Good Luck!

I agree with AGH having the dark blue background really brings the characters forward. Have you thought about bluring the foreground elements? It might create more depth.

That's it folks...all done. Thankyou everyone for the comments, they have helped immeasurably. Finally went with the red sky as i thought the blue to contrasty and the rest of the image held no blue in it. Preferred the red sky as it seemed more alien and that's the look i wanted. Once again, thanks folks, and best of luck to everyone in the challenge.

Try adding dramatic lighting and shadows now that you have finished laying out the colours. Right now it looks flat, especially the girl. She looks like a bright sticker pasted onto the painting.

The alien enemy to the right fires directly into the leg of the giant monster. Maybe you want to add some bullets/laser bouncing off the leg to good effect?

What about adding some spaceships flying about outside the window ceilings? :D

That's it folks. All done. This is the submitted final image. Just added a few final touches. It's been fun. Thanx to everyone that helped me with comments, it has been tremendously appreciated. Best of luck to everyone in the challenge, hope you enjoyed it as much as i did.

Just thought i'd add the story behind the illustration for a little depth. It goes something like this:-

Terraforming has transformed the planet Mars to a stage where a large colony now exists there, however their new lives are turned upside down when an alien invasion fleet; a race called the Gruukan, descend upon the planet looking to take over the colony there so they can mine Mars for the essential minerals they need to power their vast fleet.
There attack is merciless; wiping out the colonials with abandon. One young girl, Arial is seperated from her family, hiding herself in an abandoned storage hangar.
She is later discovered by a Gruukan war beast, a genetically engineered giant soldier. In a twist of fate Arial unlocks the warbeast's inner spirit, uncovering what is the mind of a child inside such a large brutal faceade. The two become friends and Max (who Arial names) promises to help here find her parents. In the illustrated scene, Arial and Max have discovered that colonists are being held in one of the colony supply warehouses and set out to frre them. In this scene they are discovered by a Gruukan patrol and must fight their way down a service corridor to warehouse.

this is a nice story. and since it takes place on mars then this choice of the sky is better then the blue one i guess. and i preffered the redish one from the beggining
