Patrick Balfour has entered the Master and Servant 2D.

Latest Update: Coloring WIP: Stil Coloring

Well, I didn't get as much done as I'd hoped on my days off. I think the only updates are:

Filled in the rest of the shore line
roughed in a couple dead people (probably more to come later)
changed the eyes
added some wrinkles to her dress
added some grass

This has been pretty slow and difficult progress for me, but I really feel like I'm starting to learn some things. Thanks CGNetworks for putting this thing on and motivating me to really challenge myself

Well...Here goes nuthin :)

This will be my first serious attempt at digital art, so I'm not looking for anything more than a fun project and a learning experience, so don't hold back with those critiques and comments.

With that said, I hope my concept doesn't offend people, but its kind of a satire on the idea of religeon. I thought about some of the things people will do in the name of their God and got the mental image of lemmings running off a cliff.

Please keep in mind this is meant as satire and I don't mean this as a literal view of all believers.

Thanks

The look in her eye is pretty convincing of her state of mind. Good luck.

Here is the LineArt I decided to go with. Everthing is much more refined than the concept sketch. I decided for now to remove the people following the woman off the cliff as it seemed a little too ambitous for the level I'm working at. If I get enough done to a point i'm happy with and have time left i may put them back in.

I started blocking in color & value on the main character. I used a blue background as i like the way it shows up in the skin tones when blending. will update this when i have more to show.

Oh yeah.. I don't think I mentioned this yet, but I'm working in Painter 7 on a Wacom Intuos3 Tablet.

Does anyone know why my coloring WIP images would be showing up Inverted? do they look inverted to everyone else or is it just my machine? They look normal in photoshop & Painter (Normal = Green Dress, Blue BG, Skintones)

Any Ideas?

That is strange... When you click on the image it shows it normal. Anyway.. I like yoiur idea, just keep working and dont give up.

Here is a closer shot of the girl. I've spent alot my time off refining the facial features and adding hair (ugggh!, I don't like painting hair). I think I'm pretty happy with face now, after i give her some eyebrows i think i'll move on to the hand or maybe even the background (not looking forward to that either) :)

Think that her hand have to be bigger than this one. Just stay at the mirror, close one of your eyes and make the same pose.
Love the style!

In my opinion, the subtle simplicity of the face was lost when you painted it. I don’t think you need to show the cheeks rounded towards the middle of the face—it squishes the face. And in doing that she lost her slight smile; which now doesn’t go with her come-hither eyes (that confident sleepy-eyed look).

Keep in mind that this is not a personal attack. It is my unsophisticated opinion, but I liked your sketches better. In fact, I liked the fear-of-God look better than the come-hither look because it is more in line with being called upon by a deity from another realm…unless she is the REAL master. But then why is she walking off the cliff?

I’m not suggesting you conform to my ideas about what looks better, but in my opinion if certain elements in the composition are in conflict then the viewer is going to notice it right away as ‘unnatural’. Now it’s hard to pull off something unnatural unless you are going for a more modern art/abstract kind of elemental-conflict thing. But I think you want the viewer to have a clear understanding of what’s going on in the picture.

I don’t have any great advice for your use of colors as I am a horrible painter but I will say that the color looks flat. Subtle color changes through tints, tones, and shadows will bring out depth.

I have good things to say too. The good things are that this is a great concept and you draw well. Perspective is great and you work quickly. I am not disappointed in your entry but encouraged by it. CGTalk is the place to get great advice and you can only get better from here. Good luck my friend.

Thanks all for the comments! It's extremely helpful to see what others have to say while trying to muddle throught this.

Morgy: Haven't tried the hand thing yet but definitely will when i get around to tackling that part. :)

JTD: Wow! good critique, after reading it I looked back at the other ones and kinda see what you mean. I prefer the blissful smile to the terror face, I think it shows the blind faith she puts in her master more. I reworked the mouth a little to bring the smile back.

Keep up the good comments all.

Putting that smile back has made a substantial difference. I like it too. You take criticism well and you're putting a good effort forward. Great job!

Just a small update:
I got the hand roughed in, as well as some of the background. I decided to crop an inch off of both sides of the image to add a little focus to my servant character, I think I like it better. Another work week ended for me so hopefully I'll have a big update in a few days :)
