Levent Gocer has entered the Master and Servant 3D.

Challenge Page (http://cgnetworks.com/challenge/masterandservant/view_entries.php?challenger=6173)

Latest Update: Final Image: Final!
http://cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/9/6173/6173_1116814114_medium.jpg (http://cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/9/6173/6173_1116814114_large.jpg)

Crown added. Clothes more realistic with the -additional handmade shadows-. Some more..
I think that is the final for this project. That seems enough for scene to represent the >master and servant< idea for me.

Infact I imagined many concepts but this was the most remarkable one amongst the others. It gives a feeling of some kind of a tragedy, owned by one -spendable pawn-. Having the pressure of plastic world's plastic causes' plastic deaths. Having orders from all around; different masters, different ranks, different purposes... Hard to tell but easy to understand I think. Feeling of being a spendable one maybe one of the worst feelings ever experienced.

I tried to reflect the moment of defiance. I hope it is ok.
I wish the best for all.
Let the best wins.

Hi there,
Back again with a new theme for the challenge. I am very pleasant with the new subject and even at these first moments of design, my mind was filled with ideas etc. I have chosen the scenery composition of "The Player Masters" for the challenge.

Story is that computers became very good SERVANTS of their human MASTERS, in many ways, manners and types. The entertainment sector is one of these.

Strategy and tactical games are good examples of entertainment plus learning something and even satisfying humans racing, dealing, thinking and contesting needs and desires of victory.

Scene portrays two children playing a strategic game with their futuristic computer. They are the MASTERS of their troops and the sprites in the game are the good SERVANTS of their players.

Here is the quick sketch of the scene. I hope I will draw soon a better one with some fine details.
Good luck everyone.

Still at design stage.

These two cavalryman are the ones from the fighting sprites of the computer game.

I am thinking of adding some warriors from different eras. Like submarines, helicopters, catapults, ballistas, sailships, tanks etc.

well, not very fresh idea bu it seems to have good realisation. Yeah, MDN67 is right - it has potential! Lots of freedom to decide detailes. Also lightning can be placed above (as it now) with volumetric spotligh - very mystic...

Yes, really cool concept and lots of potential... You could make something really special with this. I suggest you spend some time with finding the right angle - being down on the battlefield with the kids hoovering in the background could make quite an impact. Good luck!

good suggestion, Gunilla
Camera plased closer to the ground - and kids more powerfull!
An effect can also be increased by placing keylights for kids pointing from bottom to top. Some zones will remain in dark and just face partly will be illuminated from bottom http://www.cgtalk.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

MDN67, Sheep Factory, Arlutik, thanks very much for your valuable and boosting critics.

Gunilla and Deryk, thanks for your advises. Good ideas you have in your mind as I see now and I am really thinking to evaluate and implement over the scene. I can imagine what you mean let me say.
Keen and clever.

But I think I will wait before doing that a little bit till I prepare enough characthers and items to put on the ground. Then we can see the effect more clearly.

Finally I am sending the "making of a drakkar".

Well, lets start with the step 1. Here you see some suitable ship decks. I choose the largest one and extrude it for about 3 meters with several height segments. Later step 3 begins. Its a long and painful step, using FFD (free form deformer) but with a perfect result. As you can see in step 4, 5, 6 and 7 our task is to provide an appropriate ship hull by using, pulling and moving the FFD's control points.

As you see in step 8 and 9 I have taken one quarter of the model and deleted the latter. Just because this is enough for me to mirror and finish the overall model again. In step 10 I used "shell" command to provide a thickness. In this stages you may use a FFD modifier to trim more the mesh to obtain a better look. Then mirror it 2 times and have a full ship. In steps 12 and 13 you can see attached and welded quarters apparently.

With a basic texture tryout, the shape seems like that.

Drawing a spline bounding the hull from profile and extruding it results as the "spine" of the ship.

I hope I will continue with the masts and sails tonight or tomorrow.

I am still not sure what to put on the scene. Huge big warriors and soldiers (therefore detailed) or a wide screen deployment with a view like Age Of Empires or Civilisation style appearance (therefore many many models but less detailed and also examples from different ages). Here again I am not sure about if I will put both of the soldiers here. The Anzac and German infantrymen.

in my opinion insert less characters. because i think the aim of this challenge is to picture the expressions and feelings on the faces of characters. if you put too many characters you may have difficulties in those aspects. maybe some small items of games like chess can handle the crowd. also putting two big toy soldiers as in the concept sketch can help to express feelings of the servant.

Thank you ERILAZ.
If you have to use a -velvetish- short fur like here (the horse skin)
must not use specular curves and pull them down to zero. Then use the same texture bitmap as bump map and pull the bump rate down to something around 10 (default is 30)

IMPORTANT:
bitmap must have a rate of reality in effect and detail OR must be taken directly from a photo; ie. >the horse itself<

It seems there is a slow development here. It was just like that because I was not sure if this CONCEPT is suitable for the 3D branch of the challenge or not. By the way I was not sure what angle of view I must deploy at the scene. Then I thought that it is better to make this concept shifted to my 2D branch of the challenge. And here using a BRAND NEW ONE.

PAWNS.

Hey things are going very intresting on this side...

Your gonna have to be extra careful on spreading the UV's when it comes to mail armour. What I figured to work well was to literally model a chain mail, and then to render a colour, and alpha and a depth map from it's top view. The depth literally meant to be used as a bump or displacement map.. I managed to get very convincing results from it. You may want to try something like that out. (Sample of the shader applied to a cube (http://users.telenet.be/Black.D.Greatest/ChainMail_Shader.jpg))

I liked your idea about the pawns you are going for. It all seems to fit into what your 'in-between' idea was. So now in a manner both your 2D and your 3D are going to have simiallar concepts? Cool! I'd love to see how things develope!

Oh by the way.. you seem to have a good refference on Turkish historical milltary uniforms, weapons and equipments.. would you happen to have any refferences for a Janisary? I went crazy searching for it on the net (Only to find a link to a fairly 'intresting' comic book) I have this character I never managed to finish because of this. Thank you Matt
Thank You Berter

You are right about chain mail. Very hard to use (insanı rezil de ediyor vezir de) but also strikingly good looking material if it is applied skillfully. Thank you very much for your idea. Infact I used it with same style but a difference, I used not a model of the chain lines but a good shot picture. That would be better I think to use a 3d modeled one and lighting from top and make my own shot with texture bitmap (ie. rusty iron), b&w etc.

(dostum farkettiysen uyduruk bi box gizmoyla giydirdim adamı koltuk altları sündü, mintan giydircem zaten kapanacak oraları diye uğraşmadım.)

And about concepts. I totally pushed the "PLAYING MASTERS (OF SERVANT >and/or< ROBOT MONSTERS)" idea towards 2D challenge. Since I thought that I may complete it faster in photoshop and may add some tricks easily without meshes light camera angles etc.

In 3D challenge as you see I am planning to use huge characters with some detail over it. Besides I am very very happy with the -meaning- of new concept. I hope that it will be a good show soon.

Oh boy has a LOT happened here!

Things are definately workng out.
Though armed and armoured, the figures look perfectyly like pawns.

The fingers are a bit too thin for hands wearing combat gloves. They look very elegent though they were possibly made of a very thick material. I think the same would go for the chainmail outfit needing to add some thickness. But I it looks so good this way :)
Naa leave em all. Gives the wimpy pawn feel:thumbsup:

It's all going greart, and really getting together.

FIRESTORMS you are right about the proportions and anatomy of a horse at least particularly. And thanks a lot about the compliments. I am aware of the misplaced vertices. However do not forget that especially when talking or drawing an organic form, you can not see things at same thickness or wideness from different angles. Just one example if we look at lower part of our arm near to the wrist from a side we see a different thickness from the view from top.

NEENO , horse modeling is a certain problem. Every move over the model brings a new problem to solve. Thanks for the support anyway.

AKIN and PIGWATER, welcome. Thanks for the compliments.

Cool concept Levent, and nice modeling.

I only have one comment, is that the king and queen don't seem to come from the same game as the other peices, thats my opinion.

Otherwis very good work.

They seem (for now) from different styles, true.

I began with a piece and everytime I complete something (or just about to complete) I am putting it to the scene. Until that time every piece has some dummies.

In the begining king and queen dummies were solid marble pieces. Slowly shaping them too. Thats why they seem still like salt-pepper ware or light towers. Since they are the focus elements in the scene (and besides they may still carry the playing pawn stone identity) I may listen more about the suggestions made by you with pleasure.

Gunilla
04-25-2005, 05:10 PM
I haven't seen this for some time and wow, so much have happened! It's looking really good - I like the light coloring you've chosen for this, fits the scene perfect
Are you still going to have the kids playing?

blakbird
04-25-2005, 06:45 PM
No Gunilla, i think not anymore.

Instead of this I am planning to fade the background a little. Add some fog and smoke. Maybe some thunderstorms far away. And a huge and secret hand, partly apparent, which commands the king (or second queen).

Ah, by the way, I am planning to tweak some senses and logical unity. I am planning to put two queens who are maybe partly kings. Infact my aim is to provide a huge show scene assymetrically compositioned.

Thanks for the good boost you gave me you all, MITRALONE, ARLUTIK, GUNILLA, and the others.

Your introducing a serious amount of characters?
When having such a subtle (hafif) extrusion, I usually preffer to handle it with a bump/displacement map instead.
Usually because it gives me more independence from the shapes the polygons would allow me. And secondly that such a mustache may interfere to my mouths topology shall I want to have him have a change in expression.

But I see that in your state It is a diffrent matter as you are depicting pawns. It does add to it.
Are you going to do something about the center line running along the face?

Lol... no I am no master. Thank you very much. But I guess there are many more that would be more fitting to such a title :)
As for the school... If you do the sales.. I can try and do all the teaching :deal: I am so so with teaching.. but I am a very bad business man

Hey just when I am sure that I can confiednetly say I have updated alot... I come to see your thread

It's really looking great in the final shot Levent. The composition settings are alot more impressive than your earlier and I have to accept that it was a very wise 'Hamle' :)

I really like the crown on the Queen. Not sure yet about the Bishop/Elephant.... It looks too abstracted next to the pawn and knight.

Oh wait incase you might have a need for it to more lavish the jewelleries... In This Link (http://www.3dlapidary.com/HTML/Models.htm) you can find a variaty of jewel cuts and refractions.

Good Luck!!
