Jan-Mark Boekestein has entered the Master and Servant 3D.

Challenge Page (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/masterandservant/view_entries.php?challenger=6169)

Latest Update: Concept Sketch: dragon concept, full body view, close to final
http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/9/6169/6169_1112447415_medium.jpg (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/9/6169/6169_1112447415_large.jpg)

This is the dragon that the initial antagonist rides. It will be a looming presence with eerie light on it. Very close to final if not final.

I still need to piece together the final idea, so I'm going to draw up concepts during the day and figure out a style for both human and beast/humanoid.

Thanks Ace4016! I'll be checking around.

Here's my first idea,

Eons after the great battle which nigh on resulted in the total genocide of the humanoid race that now exists in vague old stories as dragonriders and hellbeasts. A slow recouperation had granted them the opportunity to take revenge on the human races which had become unaware of their past as a slave race.
It would be eye for an eye, they were all to perish.

In the final battle however, one of the last humans was hunted down. Unable to accept her demise she clings to her assailant with a dagger on her throat pushing her down. Thi hellbeast had never seen such fury and beauty in a human before, her pale skin standing out like a shining light. In his rage a slow feeling of utter hatred turned mildly into something else, be it contempt or maybe even infatuation. His mind was now set on taking this girl as his servant to torture her as he wishes. The love between them would grow.

As it did so did their firstborn who was considered an abomination and was sentenced to summary execution at the age of 2. Her love bound to their laws of hate and born from revenge, could not care. For he had never forgotten the ages of banishment. She struck him down in their last lovemaking and escaped. The new wilds took her in and so ended the human race.

Tadaah, but I think it's too much to put in one image. Will have to work on that!

Haha, it seems like you are having the same problem as me; trying to tell a great story with one image. But I guess they say a picture is worth a thousand words. :) I look forward to your concept.

You guys and girls wouldn't believe the luck I had today.:scream:

Missed a train(again), and found my model on the other one I took afterwards, :applause: it doesn't get better than that. I'll post the pictures maybe, absolutely perfect for it! Strong but feminine!

Niki, thanks. I was looking for yours but didn't have enough time. I'll be checking and good luck!

Kidmesh and daddymack, I'll get to it asap. Every day I get closer to my holiday time, mwahahaaa. This way it almost seems like engineering instead of image composition, lol.

And thanks element5 and cipher. Let the games begin!:bounce:

Troof, they're coming up soon:bounce: !

Kanga, thanks man! I hope I can squeeze it in one image:arteest: !

I felt like I had written it down too fast so I edited it for more easy reading and my personal comfort. I can't think of any title except Nemesis though, rather embarassing.:surprised But here it is!

Nemesis.

Long after the great battle which effectively resulted in the total genocide of the humanoid race that now exists in vague old stories as dragonriders, hellbeasts, vampyres and even wherevolwes. A slow secret recouperation for this race had granted them the opportunity to take revenge on the human races. The humans, to their knowledge had grown week, silly and arrogant. The species they had so carefully bred before, had turned on them after realising their potential. But insolent as they were, they had been unable to build a civilisation for a long time since. They forgot slowly and steadily. Until no one even considered hunting ghosts from a story, let alone the demons of old myths and religious sriptures.

In these days no more than hatred existed for the human race, they had grown again into a phenomenal force and were bent only on destroying every human on the planet. It would be eye for an eye, no one would survive their fury and onslaught.

The war began and ended as if a bad dream. The human race was being vanquished at unfathomable speeds, no one was prepared for the systematic slaughter of their people, their primitive airtactics had no defense against fast turning small targets. Great panic struck as the human warfarers started to strike at their own in a last attempt to vanquish the Enemy, to no avail.

Many battles and even more skirmishes were lost. Finally all but a few humans had been vanquished. Amongst the last was a young woman. Lost to circumstances and alone she was tracked down at last. Driven into a corner but unable to accept her demise she struck clumsily at her assailant who quickly forced her down. As a last act of revenge he pinned her back pushing down on her neck with a dagger. As she clung to him in an effort for mercy or revenge he would stare at her, and force her into despair as she realised her life was slipping away in his hands.

Having never seen such fury and beauty in a human before, he hesitated to strike at seeing her pale skin standing out like a ghostlight. In his rage a slow change in feeling of utter hatred turned mildly into something else, be it contempt or maybe even infatuation. His mind was now set on taking this girl as his servant to do with her as he wished. Seeing the strength and lively beauty of this human up close he came to accept her and eventually love her. She came to see more than her nightmares in his face and the love between them would grow.

As it did so did their firstborn who was considered an abomination, she, or rather, it was sentenced to summary execution at the age of 2. Her loved one, bound to their laws of hate and baring a thirst for revenge, could not care. For he had never forgotten the ages of banishment. Finding no way out, she was forced to choose. She struck him down in their last lovemaking and escaped into the new earthly wildernis. A wildernis filled with creatures again usurpuring the realms the defeated. She was swallowed up into this strangers land, taking away with her the nemesis of both the humans and the enemies of old.

So ended the human race, and started the demise of the enemies of old. Leaving a new world.

Phew, looks longer now than yesterday, hmm...

Amazing story, really. Now, which scene are you planning to capture exactly? With a whole story, there can be so much to choose from. Good lukc with the concept image.

jmBoekestein
03-24-2005, 09:14 AM
Thank you Ace4016!

I was thinking about using the scene where she's caught and pinned down, and en-profile.

But I'm also considering a moment after she's killed her lover, that could be very evocative. Tough choice, but I'll figure it out.

My heroin in side view, straight from the photo, at least you can see where I'm going. The expression will have to change, but I'm doing that now in the compostion sketch.
I'm working on a composition but it's taking me a while. Because I'm trying it in 16x9, pretty difficult considering I don't have the luxury of different shots! I'll need some advice before long I'm afraid!

That is SOME story there.. Feels like the background myth of the serpents from 'The Shadow of a Dark Queen' or something. Very impressive.

I too like a broad background asset for my characters; even if irrelevent to the final image presented. Since the 'feel' of all of it is always presented as you work it out.
Is yours such a case aswel? Or are you literally planning on inserting all of it into one image? Like most everybody so far, I too am very curiouse on how things are going to turn out. Just tagging along to make sure I don't miss out on it.

Good Luck!

Hi, jmBoekestein!

I've been watching your progress. It seems your pic is really going to look like a sci-fi novel book cover! Cool!
I think I know how you felt when you saw that girl. I was once at the market getting my groceries when this guy shows up - an employee - and he looked just like one of the characters I had made up for a story. Man, it was weird! I was hoping to see him again and get to draw him, but I guess he quit the job.
Anyway, I'll be checking back later to see how things are coming along.

Good luck!

jmBoekestein

 Funny how these things work don't they,

it's like someone up there really is watching sometimes. Remember to grab your mobile next time and flatter him/her with a picture. Seems like these chance models disappear just like that.:scream:

Thanks for checking.

I was fiddling with for so long that it got me down!
I think it looks flat and I don't know what to do with it. I think I should just start over because some areas are detailed and others completely empty, it's distracting.

the idea was to put her of balance to the left, but I have so much negative space now that I really don't know where, the atmosphere will be very dark and so will the background, and with a purple mist and hopefully in a forest rendered in a separate pass. Maybe I should step of the 16x9 ratio?

Any ideas would be grately appreciated!!! (means: Help me please!!!)

I too am having trouble with negative sapce in my compostion; i jsut ont know what do do to fill the background. But I think what's going to help me, and might help you, is a story, a reason behind the scene. With that said, just think more about the story and what the scenery looks like around it (feel like im in english again). Aslo, if the composition is bothering you, try taking your mind off it, and do something else, like model(we are all waiting to see you start modleing:p); that was great adivce gievn to me in my own thread, really helps. Hope I helped a little.

BlackDidThis

Hello again Jim;

I don't know if I would dare call it help, but I am going to try and spill out what comes to my mind.

Now the devil about your image is that even though postwork is encouraged; you are sort of obligated to MODEL the whole thing aswell.

What I personally think is mising out is the dynamism of the srtuggle. Like the two figures shoul dbe kin of in the center streched from one corner (personal prefference bottom left) to another corner (Prefference would be the top right hand corner) there mutual composition can ofcourse be a rectangular form... No problem with that. But from the paleness of her leg to a shoulder or the light hitting on his back. I feel the demand of a highlight projecting a diagonal discription.

Now as for their struggle so mentioned. The best struggle would be like watching Bradey Bar doing his funny stuff while almost getting strangled by a boa constructor. The manner not only of how the snake wrapes around his neck. But also in the meanings of how it's attack increases by the external coils just merge in aswel.
I am not saying that you should give one of them a tail or a demi snake look.. But to have them sort of wrap around through the srtuggles process. A struggle that ends up with her having her throught in threat. And I would definately insist that you don't have them in a straight up posture but in a contrposto pose (Sort of like a twist.. like most of the figure studies by Rubens) This would increase the wrapping.

And his mount should be sort of parked on the outer skirts of the picture. Like I don't know. To have thme more on an elevated area. lik in the mouth of a cave of the lip of a hill. The viewer looking out from the cave or from behind the lip at this case in order to see them in a much greater scale to compair to the mount that is sitting and waiting down below. Actually I think I would preffer the mouth of a cave ot something since it would allow you to add great shades to contrast to the mount and his grounds more lit by sunlight.

Now I know all that I have said is not the easiest to do.. leave alone to model.. it takes some amount of ability to be able to even draw it. And once you model such a scene ou are going to be going through hell just to prevent annoying interpenetrations. But I think it would be an intresting image to try and tackle.

As I said above... I don't know if this is going to be of any help. It was all little more than my babblings about the image I saw when I had read your story first.

I hope this can prove more use to you and not confuse you more (AND I hope that it makes sence).

In your mind zoom around the scene. Use every dirty trick you can to boost your image message.

What I am about to say seems obvious but when you are in the thick of creating something it is easily overlooked.

Remember the old get down low to make things look big camera trick A friend of mine was in a movie and although he is good looking (for a guy anyhow) hes a bleedin midgit. The camera man got down low and he looked 10 feet tall and like the killer he was supposed to portray.

DONT BE AFRAID OF EMPTY SPACE! A composition is like a symphony if its crammed full of detail it is boring. You only have creshendos. Create diagonal lines of movement for the eye, use perspective, stress motion and emotion. Play with different angles and poses. Ask yourself what you really want to say. Make lots of little thumbnail sketches for yourself then pick a direction that turns you on.

go get em tiger

Ah thanks guys!!!

Great advice Kanga. That's what I'll be doing! Phew, panic was creepin' up my spine for sure!!!

BlackDidThis, it's a lot to take into consideration. It sounds like a very good idea to do the entangled one. Will definitely look into that. But stretching them over the entire screen is too much I think. Thanks for the great tips, it must have taken a while to get all that written down.
I'll read over it a couple of times to make sure.

I'll read over it a couple of times to make sure.Mmm well I hadn't really meant the WHOLE layout.. I was more reffering to the couple dominating it (So as for you to do your best to have them in the front plane).

The better example I can give are from a variaty of Boris Valejio's works...
I recall from earlier so many that I was SURE the figure was oversized and covering the WHOLE scene... which later I had the chance to restudy (when I grew to be a great fan of his) to notice that actually the images were around one tenth of the whole coverage.
It's a big game of light and shadow at the end.

I hope that your getting things resolved on your part!

BlackDidThis,
Thanks man! I get it, totally agree with you. I actually was trying to get them predominantly in view. I'll need to doodle on it until I find a balance. The aspectratio is very powerful I think, so I'm sticking with it. (googling for Boris right as I type!!!).

Virtuoso, could you explain what Forced perspective means. I'm unfamiliar with the terminology. I just make something and hope for the best. Thanks for helping me out anyway, maybe a search will turn up something.

Hi jan-mark......let me try to explain best I can.........

It does not have to be in a camera view, you could be In your perspective view..........For example..... You can have two objects that really are fairely close together.....Object "A" is slightly in the background, and object B is a little closer in the foreground......Now when you select Object A and you pan out slightly with the field of view button depending on your program.......Now with the zoom tool you zoom in slightly,so that both objects are still in frame.......using this method object B will approah the foreground much faster than Object A........................... Thus increasing it's size visually......and if you want more of a varience just repeat that step again zooming in,until you are happy.....It will give you an illusion of distance that they are closer,or that they are quite different in size.......You need to keep panning out and zooming in.lots of experiment and tweaking to get your needed look.....

It's very touchey, the slightest little movement of the view can be altered dramatically....

It's tough to describe actually.......But I hope this helps somewhat.....Seeing you soon, good luck, any questions beyond this just ask away.....:arteest:

I get it!

Thanks a lot! I'll definitely try that, also gives me the idea to build crude geometry and use them as stand-ins to build a compostion in a 2d/3d hybrid method. Gives me a chance to actually take more angles on it than expected. It does indeed sound tricky, but I can always switch to an orthogonal viewport and move the camera object, 3dsmax is touchy in that manner.

Thank you!:D

I was going more for a lizzard feel on the dragon, you can't see the wings yet, that makes a difference I think. It's also a kind of tribute to the artist who made The Mercenary comics. He draws at real size with oils and ecoline, it's amazing stuff. The dragons he draws are really awsome and look as if they decend from some sort of pantherish lizzard. But I'll do my best to reduce the dino look.:)

Hi, I didnīt drop by yet... shame on me!

but well, I like the story, in fact I like the images telling stories, I think I prefer that to a direct thing. Anyway, I canīt help you much on the composition and so, but I think all those things that have been said are of great help (to me too).

In regards to the dragon, I've bumped into an issue. Is it not allowed to make it look too much like the dragons in this website >>link (http://www.segrelles.com/works/illustrations.htm)<<. This guy's influenced me alot with his comic.

And does my dragon look too much like it right now?

Lilie
04-01-2005, 04:35 PM
Maybe a little i'm afraid... :\ But you can still add more details to it's head, change a little it's bone structure and other things like that. So you can keep your first idea of the dragon not so fantasy-cliché-like but make it different from the ones in that link.

I'm sure you can find a way to pull it off. :)

alex.h.

Thanks, I was afraid of that.

It was so long since I had looked at them. But it suddenly struck me that he's made dragons like that. I luckily allready have loads of ideas to change him into my own style though. I think I'll indeed pull it off. The details were going to be entirely different anyway.

Ah well,. Back to the kitchen, I smell something burning.

Alex.h., you're right! No more fidgeting. Thanks man!

J-M;

I get your point.. and due to copywright issues they do not allow images that look identical to something published earlier.
But from how I read it.. as long as you don't go on and draw something directly from the mercenary... I believe you should be on the safe side. The forum is full of entries that ressemble other creations.

I would respect the part that you would like to have the idea completely your own, shall you wish to. But for as far as the dragon goes, I 'm not too sure you would have been in the danger-zone.

Good luck there!

Hiya JM, looks like you ran into some sort of similar issues as I did with those SW-like kids.
Shouldn't be a problem though as long as you don't copy it and I know you won't.
There's nothing wrong with getting influenced by other artists and I don't think your dragon looked much like those in the link, so no problems there (as you know, in my case it was slightly different), just go for it!

Looking forward to see some updates, c ya

hey!
I canīt wait to the modelling, this dragon is looking great.
concerning on the dragon-like issues and so, I donīt think you have to bother because I can see it is an influence to you, but all the artists have got influences, and youīre adding details to change it and youīre not copying it, that I think itīs the issue in the rules.

jmBoekestein
04-02-2005, 11:47 AM
Thanks Bealobo, I'm working on the update right now. I feel confident now that I've worked out more details, it'll be more fantasy in the details than Vicente Segrelles' works. He is an utter mimetist in just about anything. Which is good imo, but I want something weirder.

More sketches during the weekend! And then...modelling...

This is the dragon that the initial antagonist rides. It will be a looming presence with eerie light on it. Very close to final if not final.

I still need to piece together the final idea, so I'm going to draw up concepts during the day and figure out a style for both human and beast/humanoid.

UK3D, well I'm not sure actually. I was thinking about trying some things with environment modelling. I was hoping to have the time to make an HDR rendering of the environment and use it for lighting. But those suckers take at least a day to render I presume. I want it in a forest but I have X-Frog, pretty good plant plug-in. Must also experiment with the atmospherics.:)

Never mind JM we all need professional help sometimes, it's undervalued by our society.. ...So I hurt a few toys, I'm ok with that, more concerning is the fact that we are spending the better part of our time talking (typing) to imaginary entities, posting pretty pictures in the hope that we can get some attention from said imaginary entities, all the while the 'real' world will wizz by and be further evolved than us a month later when we're spat out by the competition...The logic defies me...yet here I am still typing...reading...and posting...just like you...Bent is as bent does...Fear not good sir, 3d or not We'll all still respect you highly, but we'll still harass your ass until you go public with the rest of your process...:curious:

When I asked the one on the left started moving rather nervously, maybe I should've ignored the huge dagger, but it didn't seem wise at the time.:) Thx.

Yeah I'm fine. Thanks!:)

I had intended to update but now I'm swamped with school work for a week. And some other project has popped up. But I guess I owe as much as a sketchy mock-up, whatever I get out of my doodles I'll upload. At least there'll be something.:arteest:

I just got sidetracked, sorry!:D

So when will this thing be uppdated?

1'st of May is right arounf the corner, it would be nice to have something decent done by that time.

I simply don't and didn't have any time this week. But I hope to get something done next week. Screw the concept art. I'm gonna doodle in ZBrush maybe to catch up some lost time and call that concept work :D.

Who knows?:shrug:Maybe I'll finish something. Gotta get some shut-eye.

I told you I had a plan...

but if you don't tell anyyone I'll give you a hint...:deal:...

it's a surprise attack, after everybody finishes, I will jump on one of the winners in a dark alley and hit them with a blunt object untill they are decapacitated. Gathering necessary info will now be easy since they lying on the floor twitching and mumbling strange foreign words.Well...you get the point...

:DJust donot inform the authorities, or your wacom's next...

Wooow! So you are going for it?!!

Thats just great Jan-Mark.. I have to say that I had times that I had to do entries simiallar in just 2 days or so.. so it is always possible. I just hope for you to be able to render things out to the res they asked us to go for as well.

What can I say?

Good luck and I am so glad that you changed your mind.. I would love to see that steed!

Well well, it's good to know that you plan to finish it anyway Jan-Mark! I,d love to see you work on this and see the progress. Though you are hopeless, asking this question about the deadline... http://img192.echo.cx/img192/4807/10giggle9og.gif

I guess I can always go into one of my blind frenzies, and skip a night or two. I built a bed, more for fun really :), maybe I should go with the cliche ending I wrote, it does have drama. :surprised

Here's the thingie rendered out, but no textures, just shaders and some noise slapped on quick. :wise: don't worry, I've got it all under control.

Ah well, focused practice is as good as it gets.

Looks comfortable! :D

I have nothing much to say about it, other than maybe the columns of the bed may not lok so good together.. Large ones and small ones. I think you should make the ones tothe right (right of the image) a little smaller in width so they would fit the others a little better. ;)

Hey at least you tried eh? It was a brave attempt!

The scene you built looks very good. And had you accomplished it all in this short a period I guess you would end up lacking some of the quality you would be presenting anyways!

Good luck with the next time Jan-Mark!
