if you follow the track from the car and "into" the picture you can see shadows from "something" :)
the staging will be different later on so you'll be able to see the loop.. but for now the modeling of the track is only "blocks" I'll make it better later on as it will be a part of the sport.. ;)

I thought I would give you my thoughts on the lighting. As you mentioned it so nicely ;)
It looks like you wanted to achieve that moon through window light. If that´s the case I would suggest dropping that intense light at the front. It looks more like light from a lamp than from the moon. If I remember correctly moon light do cast really harsh shadows. (being urban you never see real moonlight due to the f***ing streetlights (sorry about that outburst)).
How about having the moon shine through leaves making distinct foliage shadow, not forgetting the window as you´ve already incorporated.
I have no worries of you not making it, just wanted to give you my thoughts.

Looking good!:thumbsup: Now im not that good with lighting myself, but im gonna try and crit anyway.... is the light coming from a skylight? because if so (and i could be wrong) i dont think it would be that bright, because a lot of the skylights ive seen are rather thick so i doubt it would let that much light go through it, and plus it looks to be night, so unless its from a lamp or something i think the light looks too bright to be moonlight. And i think the carpet needs work...it doesnt look fuzzy and soft enough....and the track would probobly stick up some when it hits the carpet, right now it looks like it cuts right through it and stays stuck on the floor. But anyway...these are just small things, and i think the pic still looks great.:D

I tried the harsh shadows but I thought they drew to much attention when being harsh, so I actually softened them instead :)
took away the bright light in the front though, and will try the foliage of a tree next.

I plan on adding small streetlights along the road and take away the painting(I think it drags to much attention from the main subject now) and maybe add some gas(maybe fantasy glitter) to the car..
and ofcourse I have to work on the car and put the girl in there :)

Much better. Yeah, those hard shadows can be nasty. Have you tried having both? One light that cast the hard ones, then the rest soft. I like that carpet. Maybe you should lessen the DOF some. It is not too much, but it is bordering on minature.
Will be interesting to see some tests with foliage shadows.

I would really appreciate ideas of what to add fix etc.. I'm a little stuck at the moment.. have some things thought out though, but ideas from different minds wouldn't hurt..

Alrighty then,

I find the area to localized, everything seems to be low and centered. How about creating a few larger items that would create a sort of upside down dome in your picture. Hence, if you created some larger items that are on both the right and left side of the picture, they would help enclose everything, and bring attention to the character once you put the lovely girl in. Items to be considered, a large Chest, a bed (corner), maybe a big ball, a table etc.

As for the light source banish the moon light, lamps (or flashlights) could be better. You can put them on the ground so that they act as those . . what are they called, you find them at big concerts or on top of high rise buildings, you know . . . those ones there. Otherwise, I like your idea with the lampposts, they will make the track look like a heap of treasure and something fantasy like. This would certainly look sweet, because she'd be lit from under and we would see the race track as something truly special (and in her mind, it probably is:) ). If this is the case, why bother with the moonlight, you won't be able to see it if the track is lighted up the way I imaging your going to do it?

The carpet is hard to distinguish from the floor because it's border line is too straight for a carpet and hence, you can't easily see where they separate (the wood looks like part of the pattern).

The whole picture could maybe be darkened along the edges to complete blackness (or near it), hence, only a suggestion of the larger objects would be seen (see first suggestion).

I won’t comment on the track because I imaging you are going to take it to the extreme, hence, there will be a lot more tracks everywhere (many, many overlaps, bridges, jumps etc). So no comments here.

Otherwise, right now, I find that things are placed around a bit too neatly, however, I can certainly understand why you would not want to put in more clutter if you are going to add more track. But, to mess things up a bit, you could, once again, put more items along the edges of your picture so that it looks like she cleared ‘only’ that area for the track (you know kids, they are always so messy and only shove things aside to make room to play)

Hehehe, well, there are my two cents, you asked for it:p Anyways, the picture is already fantastic, these are only some minor suggestions if you have the time.

but the girl will probably not be underlit by the streetlight, 'cause she will be sitting in the car.. but maybe I'll change my mind, I'm not 100% sure about that part yet.. and I really wan't to keep the moonlight and volumetrics, but I will see when the streetlights are added, maybe it won't be needed then.. _much_ appreciated post!

after 'aptPupils' comment I changed my direction of where I wanted to take this project..
I hadn't planned to do much more on the scene, but now I'm in the progress of modeling the whole room :)
still alot of stuff to add like, books, more toys, drawings, pillows etc to the bed.. and the tracks, car and girl of course.

some of the stuff is things I found in my sisters childrens rooms, and some are designs by me..

I also changed the lighting to radiosity for now.. if I have the time in the end I'll light it manualy..


please try not to care about the lighting for now, I'll tweak it later on when the modeling is done..

Someone giving himself loads of more work ;). I have one suggestion that might add more depth to your picture. How about positioning the camera on top of a bookshelf with some toys in the foreground. Or just having the bookshelf on one of the sides of the frame. Another direction, maybe position the roof light closer towards the camera.

Now we just miss the closet door with the hairy arm protruding.

I did'nt know Toy story 3 was being shown already..........;)

It all looks fun,with a bit more "clutter",mess and overall beefing up of the objects within the room and the addition of the trck and participant herself it will turn out nice.

The best part to me is the actual layout of the track,I like it's route through the furniture,it is a nice layout.............

I will add trafficLights, startlines etc there in the end(and some which will be in the foreground for more depth)

I have made a little draw-over how i would place the tracks... that´s a great environment btw ! Maybe you got something out of it. Those spirals at the window are tracks like in a parking house (is that a word ?) That way the track elements and the cars can´t catch too much heat from the ... (in german: Heizung) - hope you understand.

Anyway hope to see your scene in action soon :buttrock:

thats looking even nicer than first , what about add some posters to wall (some kid posters like harry potter,monsters inc. etc..)table looks too clean to me add some pencils , paper with drawing etc..would do the job.also with camera view changed put the moon behing window (window-blind should be rolled up a to let the half of view from window uncovered and maybe tilted to side a bit ) Add some kind of children toys on lustre ..maybe these clinking toys when you brush against them they begin to clink) , ligting moons on wallpaper should be cool too (you know these fluorescent labels childrens put on wallpaper often)also put the light from moon casting to bed (will add neat atmosphere to piece) and track cold be selflit (like these on airports)..uff enough of bosherings and lets kick us ass :) really cool job!

really good suggestions, the only one I didn't understand was the "also put the light from moon casting to bed". you meant that the lighting that hits the floor by the moon should stop by the end of the bed, or anything else?

btw, have you modeled a roof on the room? What were the render times with rad? I agree with ila too, the shadows need to be a bit stronger (at least with the gi).

not much to crit, it's just awesome and i can't wait to see more, and eventually the final animation :D

just some thoughts on the lighting, i think radiosity would be very nice with this scene, because it would create some nice dark and soft shadows under the bigger objects (bed)...oh and where does that purple light come from ? ;)

to accelerate the rendering you could disable radiosity for all the track lights if that's possible with your package (and if you haven't thought of that already) ;)

oh and the track lights seem a little repetitive. also, if you're going to show a "first person" view out of the car's cockpit in your anim it will be pretty weird to have those lights flashing by ALL the time. so how about different types of lights, that would also make it seem like she looked everywhere in the house for the parts

you could place a flashlight in front of one of the straight parts of the track for example

good point about the lights being repetative. It looks cool but maybe a little staggering.... 3 on the right, 3 on the left, 3 on the right.

I'm kinda curious why the shadows under the bed aren't stronger with the gi. Looks like the ambient is a little high?

This looks awesome fellah, I cant tell what the lights are made of since they are so small, but it might be a bit more feasible if they were white christmas lights? I think there should be some cutesy covers and pillows on that bed, and the chair at the desk isnt nearly tall enough, looks more like a stool right now. This deifinitely has that kid room feel to it :D, i love the toy containers under the bed, and the space duck poster is perfect. Keep up the great work!

thanks, yea I've modeled a roof.. and the rendertimes with radiosity is about 40min 1050x450 with 5AA passes and low radiosity quality. will increase for the final so I'll only use radiosity for this challenge and take a couple of days in the future to light it manually..
I don't know why the GI don't cast harsh shadows there, there's no ambient in the scene.

I'll see what I can do about the lights around the track to break it up.. I will at least fix it for the animation. great idea with the flashlight :)

add accessiories to bed,
change trackLights to christmas lights,
make the toycubes smaller,
a "spiral track" on the left side climbing up on a shelf(already modeled but missed it in this rendering)
make the deskChair taller
maybe add some volumetris and particles to the moonlight..
the lamp in the roof,
something to hold up the track with on the left on it's way up the shelf..

Wow ! The mood in the last two pics is great !!! And all those tiny street lights looking awesome. How many are they ?

The only thing i would love to see changed are some more dark areas... the moonlight shouldn´t lite up the whole room. The objects don´t make any shadows at all. I hope you understand what i want to say. The area under the desk should be much darker. And also the area under the bed. I don´t know your light-set so i can´t say exactly what to change. Maybe it´s enough to darken the textures at these parts to fake the look of darker areas.

Anyway - i hope to see some more soon !? Will you animate this scene ?

The only thing that struck me was the dead zone at the bed. Or rather at the foot of the bed. You were talking about accessories, would that include carvings and the like in the wood of the bed?

and I actually used the baseMesh of that old models head, and tweaked it alot. mainly the ears(which got hidden under the helmet :sad: ) the eyes and the mouth.
but the rest is remodeled, with the old girl as a base reference.
