Hi all...
well first of... good luck every one! The fun can beginn again!
Actually I'm totally under pressure for some landscape works, so probably the time it will be really short for me. But an occasion like this is impossible to loose...
Some first input was probably to play with the idea between:
Master&Servant / Human and Robots and/or technology in every sense...
a conflict between the usefull of the technoligy used als servant... or viceversa the technology become the master and human a slave... mmm  this is a cool idea!
In this days I will think about the small story... and this time I will proceed with a more detailed concept sketch work to allow me to start with a defined idea...
Als usual sorry for my 'poor' english, gasp... :argh: ... but I will do my best
here we go :D

a bit near of mine...
s*** bro... I did a 'boulette' is really near your idea
I will be stay more to human (not nature) and machine, but machine will be more near the sense of technlogy and computers... a little bit of Mytology and matrix mix...
If you suppose that is too near your idea or you think that is a stoled concept, please tell me I will think to another thing... personally except the life vs. machine confront I see that in/with a really different result... the concept root yes is really near...
:argh:
Actually the concept was a human body (probably android) connected to a computer with tons of cables (not wirless) and totally destroyed by the power of the technology... something like that...
Pardon, I didn't read you story before your post here...

Don't change anything Julien... is near but not completely... I'm sure...
On the paper, that seem, on the screen, I think the treatment will be very different... technology... yes for me, but not present in the scene like you... the most important in my story is the mother nature aspect, the women tree, her revenge on technology and users...

::.::.:: The story ::.::.::
In 2205 the world create a super computer with the summum of the technology and informatics application to serve the humanity. For more than 30 years all was perfect and this super computer continue to receive up-dates and becoming every year bigger… this computer was called Zeus.
In 2238 humanity need to plug Zeus to a nuclear base to give at this computer enough energy to work, but the day were this connection to nuclear energy something change…
Nuclear energy give at this machine a strange new power… a kind of consience, an ability to think by him self, the power to build is own elements to be indipendent and evolve alone in the time…
Humanity was stunned about this strange phenomenon… they think that was a real discovery and they think about an evolution between man and technology…
7 year after Zeus encounter different problems witch one was a survival problem, he hasn’t enough energy to continue they own evolution… Zeus was like a animal that need to create their own defense and he started to use the human biological energy for is own alimentation…
Als Aztec and Maya times humans began to do human sacrifice… but they wasn’t enough, Zeus decide to reverse all normal and logic order… Zeus in 2246 became the master of humanity and humanity the serve, the slave of him…
sketches will coming really soon...

I used again my scan of the hand draw, and added some figure at bottom... actually I'm not really in clear with the Zeus aspect. I will think on it this week-end. For the hangar and some lights als first input I'm fixed... I like this idea. Really a dark and opressed mood.
Probably I start some 3D modelling of the hangar...

well here we are... the 3d session start now.
Is true that I'm not fixed with zeus computer aspect/form... I try to visualize 3 different computers:
1 like a robot
2 like an alien structure
3 like a simple cube ( a ibm server... something like this) but in this case I had to do/create a distressing and dark sourronding otherwise the image will lost interest.
I continue to think abou it...

Actually, i just got an idea about the idea i just gave you. One of the worlds 7 wonders i believe is the statue of Zeus made of gold and ivory in Olympia; maybe you can have a humanoid (not neccessirly human looking though) sitting in the exact position as the statue of Zeus, maybe even in gold circuits and ivory body/shell. Just a thought; my myth class and you mentioning Zeus got me thinking of the statue. Maybe just the gold circuits and ivory body in whatever dominating pose would work better then the throne pose though. Hope you find the design of the Zeus computer soon, I want to see this entry finished in the end.

is just a volumetric light passig through mettalic structure or borders of the destroyed area that create this fx.

but I think that's a real challenge to make understandable the story in it...
yeah Laurent you got the point... BUT... I decided to do 2 days of pause from my 3D operation to drawing and thinking exacly how to generate the 2 elements (zeus and humans / master&servant)...
I had to say that a little bit of wine help me a lot...
I have some good idea. But I'm not in office, so no scanner here at home (drastic decision of mine... at home just web and iTunes... otherwise I work 20hrs day), no 3d application, just my pen&paper and different test/sketches... I really working hard this time and I will better fit the contest theme (in GSO I made absolutely what I want and I was a little bit out of theme...).
Je te promets cette fois je veux déchirer !

Good work on the figure model so far, that is the toughest part of these challenges, building new figures from scratch. It seems like the face has a lot of polys? Will the face be seen close up? But I suppose if you build it full now you can use it for other things later.

soapy you have noticed something: too many polys... From my past experience I use not so many polys and I never reach good result because when I adding polys I loose my self in the gemetry.
With the new function/tool of 'create polygon' on r9 is really much easier to generate polys, I create it like if I draw. Works well and I can follow better my reference photos...

I can agree a bit with the points about the face mesh being a bit too dense. But then it's true too, like you say, that having too few polys can be problematic as well when it's time to cut more detail. Maybe something inbetween... The end result will no doubt be good at any rate.

yep... in different exercise that I made I starde with a extremely low poly and using Mesh Surgery I cut, add polys, and change the main forms of my polys, but llways I lost a lot of time and I can't reach dood result... So in the front of the face I add more polygons that I made normally ad the rest of the head is really a low poly. Now thatks to n-gons is really more easy to do...
I will post later a mesh of the actual head...

Hey man,
I reckon you could do with losing 3 or 4 rows of polys from the upper lip area. They're just getting in the way of each other and you're ending up with a very forced, unnatural look. I tend to start with a fairly low poly mesh and then add detail where it's needed once i've got the basic shape set out. Same goes for the area bewtween the eyes.
Also you might consider increasing the width of the bridge of the nose.
Definately a strong start though, the profile is pretty much spot on. Good luck.
Dave.

03-30-2005, 02:05 PM
tzktime good luck to you too :wip:
Swamps ...Dave thanks so much... actually I'm doing exacly the inverse procedure, I use the n-gons to eliminate the polygons that I can 'erase' to have not so many poly (and different geometry problem)... work fine actually. You have reason about the rows is what I did and what I will do... step by step. I will take care to the nose...
thansk for your relevant comment :wip: really appreciated !

Hmm, its good, but it can definatly be better. I think you should take 10 or 15 minutes to look through the other challenge pieces and look at their facial edge loops. I say this because alot of your loops on the face seem to be a mess.
You have a good general foundation for them but you just need to follow the faces muscle structure more. Especially around the mouth and nose area, those seem to be the worst loops on the face. It shouldn't take too long to fix up if you give it your full attention and I think you will be alot more happy with it after you do, expression will be alot easier to set. hehe.
Anyways, overall its good, but theres definatly room for improvement, just take your time because honestly, if you don't win this one, theres always next time ;) :bounce:

Good job on the servant. I have to agree though with geta-ve; the edge loops should look like loops around the mouth. Man, the joan of arc tutorial is more the gold; I would recommend it to you for the head(the english version is at 3dtotal.com, and it links to the french version). I'd also get rid of some tris, especially around the mouth. Good luck on the face.

Yes, maybe that's not realized in the rule of the art... but the result is here... I think with minor tweaking, that's will be sufficient, and if they're not close-up.... that's run easily... and I'm sure that for the next one, Julien change his maneer to place his edges...
You work hard Julien... vas-y, à donf... champagne !

Geta-Ve... I have really to thanks you for your comment. Like swamps tells me to reduce polygon, like your coment now is really a great help.
I will work seriously in the direction that you tells me and take time to do it. This last image post of the servant stage 1 is for me like a render test to think over and having feed-backs. I found other small details that are to work on too. Now another modelling stage on this model can beginn... :wip:
 thanks so much !
ace4016 yep I know Michael tutorial. I made it a lot of time to learn and speed up my ability to play with polys. This time I use different tools of the new version of C4D so I change a little bit the tecnique. Anyway like the previous comments... I had to refine different things... :wip: I fight for the right to polygonize ! ... lol
lemog nor particular close up are preview on slaves like you can observe in the sketch... but this didn't mean that I will reach a good result for this figure. I had to take care if I will rig this body too to don't reach a situation where I can't control correctly all my poly... at same time I do some experience on a kind of modelling that I don't do for my job normally... thanks for support and encouragements :bounce:

The modeling level was great, like the texture. Only pay attention to muscle details; it has a flat/box-like view.
For the muscles, you made changes in mesh, or use some texture technique (bump map, normal bump), or something else? Try reproduce this in the mesh. At this form, the lights result can be more efficient.
The servant will get hair and/or clothes?
Sorry my poor english vocabulary.

Lot of work here Julien... congratulation ! I know, body modeling is very long work... and not very easy. You made a lot of progress I think, there's my remarks for him :
The shoulders fall towards outside, and are a little too behind compared to the chest.
The articulations should be marked, with the elbows, the knees, the wrists and the fingers.
The muscles of the chests are too square, and it's oddly the only part of his body which is very muscular.
The thighs are not powerful enough.
The scapulas do not arise enough.
The connection head/body is too angular, it would be necessary to mark a little the shape of the deltoïdes muscles.

Hi Julien,
You're walking on a good way! Yes, some twekings left, but am sure you can solve these problems. One crit from my side: maybe the fingertips are a bit narrow and the head is moved backway, just bring it a bit "ahead". Maybe you can do some tweakings after rigging if you convert your char into mesh again, but i'ts up to you. Keep posted, good to see your development on him! :wavey:

Nice progress Julien. Only suggestions would be to round out the outer edges of the pecs they seem a bit too square and emphasize the shoulder blades on the back just a bit. Also the spinal indentation increases usually just above the hips in the lower back slope. Keep at it, be back for more later. :wip:

Well Julien I cant add to the wonderful coments above...just agree....I do think however as WIP's go you do have a real nice basis or founday=tion for a real nice model.....I think it's tweak and tweak some more time.....we have to do it....But it's prety close to getting what I am sure you are looking for.....Keep chisling away at it as you are.....My main thing would have ben for you to widen the fingers a bit....but you are onto that by now I am sure......So keep it up.not far off ,,,,see you soon, and work well....:arteest:

I really like your skin shader, and the model of the figure is really coming along. To my eye, his forearm is somewhat pinched, his pecs need to flow more smoothly up to his shoulders and out over his arms, and his abs look just a little too defined. keep it coming

mmm yep... next time I will do a woman, no muscle to do with my meshes :scream: lol...
Thanks to point me on this... I try to do step by step. Is a little more slowly, but I had to pay attention to my meshes, otherwise I lost my self in poly and points. Thanks for the shader comment... I jump from shader test to modelling to change a little bit of "kind of work" ...

Looking good Jddog!
Just A comment about your lighting testing... You may consider setting up the lighting for your scene and make all your scene lighting not effect you human model at all...then set up separate lighting rig for your human elements and again ...but the flip side ..... have this set up not effect the environment. Don’t know if you need to but I have experimented with this kind of thing and found that this gives more control in most instances....Especially when using complicated skin shaders & surfaces etc... Another method would be to render your components of the scene separately and then re-composite in PS or similar app.... Again just gives you more control.... Well hope I'm not rambling on pointlessly....Maybe you will find something useful here.
Good work dude and rock on mate :buttrock:

Thanks blackdragoncg for comment... when you talk about istances you talk about servan human bodies? ... is preview to don't use at all istances for bodies but all individual object with different pose (so 6 or more individual copies of each bodies).
What you teel me is really interesting, I didn't think about this step and I didn't really imagine about a technique like this...
For the moment I use only same colors to see how SSS and material color react, really a quick test to be sure that the shader is ok.
Will keep this in mind for next progress... Thank you so much !
And since the servants are placed like that I hereby withdraw from my earlier comments on towels or leafs.
lol... did I need to do servants bigger for the leaf :scream: ... yep then some of this bodies will be more in water als now, someone only with head and arms out, outher with the water near knee, etc... I will create a scene with a lot of dinamics and movement...

I agree with most everyone on the execution thus far Julien......I see a few tweakable areas,,,but slight tweaks.....natural smoothing is all......It's quite close to be clean and right.....nice proportions an overall well developed character....just keep tweaking,go with natural contours of the body.......Round of edges...blend muscles into one another......Tweak highway for you.......but it's close......Doing a real nice job with this.......I got my own muscles with brute to mess with.....so we can tweak together.......Keep it coming Julien.....:arteest: :arteest:
