Ok, first sketch. Not sure I even want to go with this idea. It seems to be stuck in my head. I'll kick it around a little more. If I do, I'll follow it up soon with a story.

Well, I can't seem to come up with the Mind Blowing concept I've been searching for. So I guess I'll just work with what I have. Hopfully do a nice looking and interesting image.

The Story:

The Giagantas and Humans have co-existed peacefully for hundreds of years. The Giagantas have always lived in the hills and mountains while the humans lived in the valleys. The Giagantas are a primative yet peaceful race always trying to be in harmony with nature and the other races that surround them, while the humans, with their slightly more advance technology, have constantly been at war amongst themselves.
The humans have often used the Giagantas to perform difficult manual labor which they have done willingly. Yet for a long time the treatment of the Giagantas by the humans has begun to be increasingly more cruel, and more and more often the humans have refused to release a Giaganta once it has been in servitude. The Giagantas have never really had the will to resist the humans because of their peaceful nature and fear of the humans more advanced technology and ability to cause pain.
...but you can only push a race so far before the will and desire to revolt comes to bare.

Begining the Modeling of the Giaganta.

Looks good so far. Seems you've abandoned the heavy upperbody/small waist that we see in your concept sketch. If I may, I kind of liked the primitive, apelike appeal of the sketch giaganta. Made him look more ape-like. May be just me though. I have this picture in my head from League of Extraordinary Gentlemen of Hyde with less of his "steroids". The modeling looks solid though.

Keep it up, it's looking good,

Daoine

I like your concept! In your concept sketch you show the Gigantan doing his servently duties. In your explanation of the concept you hinted at the Gigantan "turning" on its human master. Have you thought more about what you want in the final design? Are you going to have a scene full of these creatures doing the servantly duties, or all of them revolting against their human masters, maybe a mixture of both? I'll be keeping an eye on your entry. Good Luck!

miketche
03-26-2005, 05:35 AM
Daoine - Thanks. My concept sketch was just a base idea. I develop things more as I build them in 3D. I like the idea of a larger body for the Giaganta.

pixeltroll2005 - The idea of the revolt will be protrayed in more the facial expressions of the characters. Subtle. The very beginings.

overcontrast - Thanks.

I'll post a modeling update soon.

Hi Mike, just came to subsscribe and wish you good luck and much fun.

Story sounds very nice, Like the Giganta you create, but i have to say, i'd like to see a bit more of the giganta part of your world you create. i could see a supressed, shamanic civilisation of peacfull giants that offer many many possebileties, i like your story very much and i think the rishka showes not a slight bit of the potential your story offers, imho.

Keep on goin, looking forward to what you make of it.

Ok, I'm almost embarassed to show this. I know, it's horrid. My only consolation is, in the composition I have in mind, you'll only see the back and maybe side of his head. That is why I am purposfully keeping the face simple.

It is looking good, just keep pushing and pulling those vertices until you are happy . Maybe try and find some good wire meshes of human models and study them , then model then look again at the wire mesh, then model some more. Good luck with this.

Hi miketche, you're cracking along here mate, great progress!
The puffs at the end of his sleeves look a bit random compared to the sort of clothing you've made, I think they would really benefit from some pleats, or maybe a bit of 'gravity' so they don't hold 'up' as much.

Hey Mike, great progress!
maybe use a bit a wider fov, to get more of the "suck effect" also in a later stage, motionblur could help it :) the kart looks absolutely awesome. the human hair in close up could maybe use a bit refinement in the textures, if you keep that angle, you might also play around mabe with some layered hair?

I really like images with good DOF effects. Cinema 4D has a really good DOF option in its separate "Advanced Render" module, but unfortunatly I only have the Core, so built in DOF is not an option for me.

I plan on faking it by rendering the image in layers. By rendering the background then bluring it just right in photoshop, I can place it as a background object then render the foreground. Walla, nice DOF.

altebanger

altebanger - Yes, I know. I just couldn't afford to swing the cash. Advanced Render, Sketch and Toon, and Mocca are three that top my list. But this DOF trick is something I've been using for a while.

Cartesius
04-14-2005, 12:51 PM
Looking very good so far, Mike! Another trick you can use for adding DOF is to use the Lenscare plugin in Photoshop (or AfterEffects). It's very easy to use and produces stunning result.

Maybe you should tweak the shader(s) of the character in the foreground some more: he looks a bit to 'unreal-shaded':hmm:

Good luck in every case! :) & CU later :)

Ok, I really wasn't feeling it with my first composition idea, so I've totally reworked it. Same characters, same situation - just new setup. I'll need to really work with the background some.

What do you think? Any ideas?

Ok the new comp is really excellent (and the ground texture rocks really :applause: ) but if you change the comp, why not try to put your both figure on a position where is possible to view teir from front, like if it was grab from the back...

I will check closely what you will do ! :wip:

Yeah, I'd like to see the sudden fear in the master's face. Great work though

I prefer the previous comp with the woman falling and the ogre in the background. This composition was placing us in a situation in which we were right in the action. Now it feels more like a screenshot from a video game, IMO. Like jdd have suggested, it may be cool to see the girl face by changing her position. Maybe she could run from this monster and he's grabbing her hair backward. Anyway, that's jsut suggestion. This is a really great piece!! :)

What a lot of opinions and suggestions. Thanks All!

I still think I want to only show the back of the human, (he's a man by the way. Wow, my modeling must really be bad if he looks like a woman. LOL).

I just wasn't feeling anything with the first comp. This one seems to have more meaning for me. I'll still be working on it.

Just some rocks for the background. Done in Vue and imported into Cinema 4D.

Damn, a whole new scene! Maybe you should just go ahead and animate the whole fight scene. Nice work. I am not sure which of the two I like the best at the moment.

This new angle makes the whole scene look small and the sevant not as powerful as the last angle plus there was more emotion in the last angle but good light setup.

Here is the final untouched-up rendering. I'll be doing some post work on it in Photoshop to fix a few small areas.

The same compositing DOF effect was done on it that I illustrated with the earlier concept.

I like the composition alot. The servant does look less menacing but I don't think it loses any of the storyline. I also like the lighting alot. Nice work.

HOLY CRAP!!! Talk about creation at the speed of light! Damn Mike, you work FAAAAST. This looks great:thumbsup: I'd like to see the humans face a little. Just enough to make out the corner of the mouth and laugh lines (not like he'd be laughin' in that burly beast's grasp:D), really show his fear. Honestly, you have tons of time, so, play with the poses, tweak them a bit here and there and render them out to compare. The beast's left index finger cuts off rather sharply with it's angle, for instance. I suggest taking your time from here on out. You have plenty of it to turn this into a masterpiece:arteest:

Good luck:beer:

I just found your thread, and you're almost finished! Great idea--nice twist. I like the new composition--i think it tells the story much better than youre earlier one. It would be very cool to see the human's facial reaction to having the tables turned. Good stuff

Looks like the great effort has allready pay off for you my friend! very well done, congratulations!, It looks very good, I would only change the skin of the guy is too pale, and reduce the deph of field, but if u feel ok with the final image, that is what this is all about
Good Luck Michael, and congratulations once again

Great job, miketchh. I like the idea.
But while I know you're calling it 'done', I've gotta agree with Climax in that the DOF is a bit too strong. It kinda distracts from the rest of the piece.

Well thanks everyone for the kind words and all. I guess I should have worked on it a bit more, but to tell the truth, I just wasn't really inspired at all. I never felt a connection with it.

I've uploaded the final large tif image, so it's done, but I really don't expect it to go any further than that.

Good luck to all. There are some really very good entries in this challenge who deserve it a lot more than I do. We'll see what the next challenge brings.
