Olivier Ponsonnet has entered the Master and Servant 3D.

The story:

" She's an orphan, living alone in her cold and gloomy manor, served by little teddy bears.
She loves "playing" with them, torturing them.
Today, she's quite annoyed and upset: her favourite bear doesn't want to play any more..."

Hi there!
I don't even know if I'll have time to complete this challenge cause I got exams during the same period :/ , but let's try to do comthing!
Here is the idea:
A little kid torturing his toys. Ok that's quite simple but I think I can do comething funny with that, with maybe a little gothic girl in her little gothic room with cute, little and hairy toys hiding around, fearing their master.

03-23-2005, 02:01 PM
Hi!
I like the concept but I don´t think it has to be a gothic girl.
Well that´s my view, of course.
I suggest you to have a look at this sketch (http://www.cgtalk.com/showpost.php?p=2013126&postcount=46)(made by Hym). This is what I mean, a more subtle thing, just a punky kid that likes to disturb and so.
What you yhink? Am I off this thread?

Another talented french guy has entered the challenge.
I hope you will have enough time to finish it.
Good luck,

Hi guys,
bealobo: thats's an interesting point of view, doing something a lil less carictural could be a good idea. But in fact I often start with a precise idea in mind and change it during the creation process, so let's see what I'll do :D
Nino: thanks!

Hi there
Great to see another amazing artist entering the challenge :)
But be sure to use the challenge submission system (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/masterandservant/submit_entry.php)for your pictures, so you will not skip any of the required milestones; and it will make easier for people to spot your updates.

Well so far the modelling looks good, and the concept is incredibly hilarious. Though simple has so many possibilities. I like the idea of the kid enslaving the toys, and treating them badly. Seems like you could go tons of different ways with that. Hope to see something good come out of this. I'll keep my eye on you.

I like the idea of the kid enslaving the toys, and treating them badly.

Its seems different of expression like the other concepts and stories, most of others are toys controlling and mastering the poor kid :scream:

Hello to you Olivier, your concept is very good, very carrier, the modelling of the head seems to be trés indeed left, we already see the caractere of the girl, I am going to follow this, with attention

Thanks for all your comments guys

About the softwares used, I use 3dsMax7 for every 3D stuffs and Photoshop for 2D maps.
There's a little SSS for the skin.
The dress texture is a mix of painted+masks+procedurals maps :)
Concerning the shoes they won't be the only rusty/dirty thing in the picture so this will best suit her later.

It's awsome, I'd change the boots around a bit though. I'm not sure if it's the shape, proportion, color or maybe it's just the style boot but somehow they are weakening the visual/character, the rest is working great. If you look at the image and just hold your hand over the feet/boots you'll see what I mean.

Thanks guys for your comments.

About the bear shader:
There's a map for the discplacement channel, another one for bumpmap. These two maps are procedural (mix of noise and cellular), so that I can easily modify the fur appearance for my different bears( particularly concerning the different holes in the fur). I didn't unwarp the UV for this model. In fact in this scene, I only unwarp the nasty girl face and her dress. For the other objects, I try to use the UV basic projections (planar, box...).

Thanxs guys! About the fur, it's hard to get fur with mental ray in 3dsmax because all the fur plugins aren't compatible with this rendering engine...
Here is a little more precise sketch of th bottom of the picture. There's two main bears supposed to be the servants. The first one, on the left, don't wanna "play" any more with the girl . The second one, the traitor, is showing her where the first bear is hidden. Then you can wonder which one is the master: the girl or the traitor who seems to control her?

Hi there!
About the camera angle my aim is not to make an action scen but something posed that's why the wall is facing to the cam. I'm not happy with what I get here. In fact I'll maybe completely change the room to something bigger really different and as strange as the girl.

Ouch;

This is turning out to be a little bit 'sad' now

At first I had liked the bots she was wearing, but now they seem to be a bit too much for her and the rest of the scene. But since you say you are going to change things greatly; I guess it is betterI just sit and wait.
I am not too sure, but would it be better if in your next round you have the camera looking at one of the bears, having her tower from the perspective behind? This would sort of display your teddies alot better/ They shrink into the rest of the details in the room. Just a thought since your next room is going to be even bigger.

It all looks very impressive.

Yeah, I agree with Black about the camera angle. The current composition isn't that strong atm imho. But the characters/environment is looking really good. Also, your characters are getting lost amongst the color/lighting atm. I think you should work the lighting in such a way so that the background is more subtle and the characters pop.

Hi!
thanks for your comments guys, here is a new idea backround for the background: she still tortures her bears etc... but now she lives alone in a big and weird manor with floating window, stairs leading to infinity and darkness, chains, huge curtains, strange columns... I think this suits the character better than the previous background. I'll maybe add a big stuff made of pieces of black glass that is commonly used to light rooms in castles with candles(can't find the english word :x ).
Thanks again for your comments guys.

great styled.
you have just to work on the lighting. a spot shining on the girl can sperate her more from the background...

Thanks for your comments, I'm now working on the lighting to make the characters, particularly the girl, more prominent. Indeed, now I got a lot of space so I'll add more stuffs around: a dead bear, laying on the floor, completly warped and burst by the girl, weird lamps near the stairs, and maybe some strange shapes floating around.
Tahnks again guys .

Oh mate, it´s very, very beautiful....like a dream...I love it!
Maybe it´s too dark, I think you lose the details a bit in such darkness...but it´s just my opinion!
anyway it´s an amazing work!
Keep it up mate!

Hi, this is a little compositing test with the new lighting of the girl.
For the post effects, there's only two filters type: color balance and noise.

Hi reiv,

nice comp & mood you caught there... maybe there could be some more lights coming from upstairs to give the viewers eye a chance to travel... only my humble opinion :)

I like the atmosphere you're going for.. I agree with ilusiondigital, it reminds me of Alice too..

I prefer the previous comp with the more greener tones tho.. still an excellent piece, and eager to see more from you

Hi,
Thanks for your comments guys. Concerning the overall tint of the previous picture, I think the final tones will be more green or blue tones ( like the picture posted here) than red/brown.

Hi,
thanks guys :)
This picture is a rendering test with few filters, to show you how the final picture will look like. The two bears will have fur in the final render.
I had memory problems to render higher rez pictures, so if anybody has some tricks to solve memory issues with 3dmax7 and mental ray this could really help me.
Thanks in advance.

Guess you could try rendering to layers and then pasting it together in post. Use similar colored stand ins to generate gi bounces for the characer, Render out the bear and the pillar seperate with a reflection map then mix him in etc...It's tough work but it's jsut a possibility

Maybe the max forum might have some specific tech tips??. Go check there I"m sure they've got a few aces up their sleeves.

..Hmmm or run out and buy some more ram.

Oh yeah and the last render looks great

Looking wonderful!

You could try and render it in sections, sometimes that seems to work.

Hi Olivier!
I admired your work previously to this challenge, but seing your progress is a pleasure.
How did you get the transparency things (curtains?) in the environment? they look very special.
And well I prefer the environment without the bed, I don´t see how it helps to the story, but it´s me of course.

great, neat, incredible job!

Thanks for your comments and tips, I'll try them.
bealobo : the curtain shader is quite simple there's only one little trick. I use a fallof map in the transparency channel : the surface is less transparent towards perpendicular and the more the surface faces the camera, the more it's transparent. I also use this sort of map in the color channel to make the surface reddish towards perpendicular. Also the specular is bluish and set to anisotropic. Here is a little preview from the material editor:
