Latest Update: Final Image: eternal servitude

Hi all, here is my final image and the backstory.

Under the shaded canopy it is cool as the heat of the afternoon sun shines down. Slowly they amble and finally approach the stall. You see both sisters, twin heirs and masters to the Upper Kingdom of Naspure. With them is the fiercely renowned Warrior , protector and servant 'Gei- Janna'. To them she is bound by ' Eternal Servitude ', the code her caste live and die by. She stops by the slaver ' Noamer ', a despicable and despised parasite who relishes the misfortune and suffering of others. A beast whome I now call ' master '.
I sit and wait, under the cool shade of the canopy, as my master peddles his wares. he will soon approach me for I have a task. A task that is bound to me and my kind.
What ? she sees me. her glare makes me uneasy. My eyes search the promenade, and I see the twin masters aloft sitting in their transport. A vendor offers a master refreshment. Has it been poisoned ? I don't know how many players are in this game. It is then that I spot him. Zarkon, master of the lower house of Ilam. He lurks in the shadows. He is unkind to his slaves. In the distance I hear my name. It is time. I must prepare.
The House of Nilam and it's Masters in the upper kingdom of Naspure must fall. I am it's destroyer. My code wills it.... Assassin.

Hi guys,
best of luck to all of you on this challenge. here is my initial concept for this challenge. I am working on a few more concepts which I will submit in the following days.
As for this particular concept, i wanted to use a more philosophical approach to the Master and servant Architype. And i love Samurai !

Hi all,
well I think I have at last roughed out my final concept. People are inspired by many things. In this instance it was my cat. Originaly I was going to do some freaky little alien dude on the little floater, but it just didn't look and feel right. So I just doodled my cat as a stand in and.. 'presto'..it fits (pardon the pun,)..' purrr fectly .
I am thinking of adding a few more characters to this as I go along.

Hi All,
been working on this at work while my art directors back was turned. Hope he doesn't read this post. Anyway, managed to do some line work and also change the composition a bit. Been thinking of making the cat more playful and having the servants /slaves more happy around it. While there is more fear and submissiveness with those near the creature. Hmmm.. Ialso want to put a few more characters in.

Thanks Michael. yeah, infact originaly i had the plate girl closer to the floater. But I realised that I wanted to show that she was actually standing on a step but also she had to keep her distance to the master and if he so wished he would give her a sign so that she could approach.

Hi all,
stated fleshing out the idea a bit more.Still thinking of adding a slave trader in front of the body guard, and a few more happier servants near the cat. I want to also have a whole bustling market place in the background. I want to get a very 'Orientalists' theme going.

I like the idea. Very slick with the usage of the "everyday" cat in the role of Master.

I would only suggest maybe playing with the angle a little. It is very straight on, but that can work very well.

Good Luck!

Those slaves look great, the tattoo is a nice touch, I would defenitly keep it in. I think you got them just right, doesn't need to be changed a lot for the final.
BTW what are the slaves doing? are they mopping the floor or just bowing for the cat? or something like that.

Keep em coming and I'll keep checking:thumbsup:

I love your initial sketches with the samurai. They are more provocative than the female slaves. In the female slave pictures, there are too many things going on at once. But whatever you think will work for you, you should go for it, there is not doubt that the talent is there.

Good Luck!!

my take on the '; Ju-on '

Batsky Starman - Thanks dude ! I really love the Samurai pic too and I am developing it as a personal piece. But I was inspired by the 'Orientalists' and that's how this design came to be.
We are all Masters or Servants to someone or something.

Teknotek83 - Thanks Dude ! I'm gonna make it look as busy as I can without cluttering up the main protagonists.

Your take on Ju-on, dude you nailed it!, awesome! Will scary mom also be in the piece? she totally freaked me out every time (brrrr that noise she makes), great movies, still haven't seen the american version though.
Pretty funny, a while ago I started a Ju-on painting myself, a got the idea when I was in my (small) shower and thought it would be cool to have a girl in the same sort of shower(painting naked girls is fun:D ) who suddenly sees the little Ju-on kid and behind her the mother comes crawling down the wall ready to grab her throat with her hair, but that one is being put on hold for now.

AAAAnyway, I really like your concept, but you allready knew this, keep em coming

Curiosity dragged me over... And am I happy it did.
Your works were truelly worth it!
It is a great pleasure to watch you sketch out your ideas.

There is a point that I am sort of confused though. I understand that the Shogun/Samurai (Good catch! Samurai is Servent in Japanese for those who don't know) is going to be a personal project.. but are all the other works going to be put together in one grand composition?(Not too bright this evening)

I have to agree with the slave girl at the background, sort of, JUST not fitting in right. I think it is sort of based on the illusions real life situations play on us? Like you take a photo in such a way that the moon seems to be between your fingers...
And in your image the fact that there is nothing sudgesting the distance value of her to the viewer or even suggesting that there is a story of stairs there behind where she is standing. Really creates an odd perspective. Sort of like she is soo far, that she is behind the ground curve.. or a little hilltop/elevation. Can you see what I am getting at?
I KNOW you are in the begining yet, and I am sure you plans on adding in details.. if nothing textures that are declining in size or something, would show. I just hope that you have things planned for her.

Point proven; you are a very talented individual and it would be great fun to tag along your project.

Good luck!

Hi, Tariq!

I've been secretly watching this thread for a while but now that you're starting to define the final image I think I should give my humble imput.

About the girl being sold - something isn't quite right with her. Her hips are too low?

About the servant girl - the knee on her left leg is not turned the same way as her foot. (And both her feet seem a bit large for her but that's probably because they're not shaded yet...)

Overall it's a great pic! I'll be watching for new posts.

Good luck!

Yum!, this is like star wars meets hentai for a painting session, just one suggestion, do something with the colour of the sky, something about it bothers me, maybe a slightly different hue, this will be an awesome work:thumbsup: oh , yeah and the hips arent the problem it s the depth of the shadowsbut knowing the way i myself work u have noticed it and have it in fixup schedule.

your color rendering is very cool! I love woman coloring ,
I think your composition is a little bit scatter element, when I look first ,I dont' know what is the focal point , who is the master? without reading the story. In this case , I think the alien girl in the middle, the princess in the flying pod, and chamberlain , have "equal" maybe you can pick the one or move all three charactor together and emphasis one of them,
good luck

Hey,didn't see this thread before and it's looking really nice!!!
Although I agree with Monsitj about the composition. It's missing a bit of energy right now I think and for the moment it's look a bit like you dropped your elements there just like that. Maybe try to play around some more with foreground and background elements.
I think that the sky is indeed a bit to normal for the moment and think that a sky with orange/Pink/purple tones would increase a bit the dramatic part of the pic.
These are just suggestions ofcourse.
Because it's really heading to a great final:thumbsup:
Good luck!!!I' sure be popping in again later on

This is really starting to come together great... All the little elements of the pic being worked on seperately and building up like a big jigsaw. My concern is the focal point of the composition; where we are meant to consentrate our attention... At the moment you could almost cut the picture in half and have two pics that would be perfect for the challenge brief! :) The slaves and the alien woman in one, and the priest and girl worshiping the cat in the other... However, your attention to detail and rendering skills are working excellently... coming back for more soon! :D

Posh - at last thanks for comming to visit. i think from the get go I had planned out in my head that I wanted the composition to look like a gerome painting. You are right when you say the painting has no focal point. A few have made that point and for a while I was considering taking th cat out, and leaving just the cyber chick, but then again....hmm? i think I want to have many masters and many servants.

The update's great! Those clouds are amazing... and the depth is excellent! Check out the work of Sir Laurence Alma-Tadema if you don't know him for the kind of ambience I get a feeling you're going for here. Although he's got a big thing for marble, and boy he does it sooo well.

This is a little general, so before I say anything, I'll apologize for that

From looking at al your wip images, I'm concerned your concept is slightly too busy, I mean you have the master woman, the slave seller, and the two women in the foreground all in the same regeon in your painting. Perhaps consider spreading them out or something? just my 2 cents.

Hi guys,
thanks for your concern about the composition. Yeah i've really put some effort into how i set up the characters and the lighting of the finished piece and I am confident (fingers crossed) that I can have a final image that is in my head. I know it is pretty hard to convey this right now but as I progress I hope the piece will really come to life.
Thanx for the crits though and do keep reminding me of it, so that I don't fall off my game.

Cheers,

Hey Tariq! Congratulations on the front page the other day... twice! BTW, the hair on 'White Queen' is fab! I'm going for something like that on 'Kitty'...

Watch the hand on the girl in this update. It's looking a bit awkward... otherwise, can't wait to see a bigger shot!

a lil colouring tip, add a streak of more saturated lo opacity red on the zone where the light and shadows meet, it will simulate the so called sub sirface scattering and liven up the skin shading and the characters themselves:D

This is turning out to be quite epic - nice. The left-hand side is brilliantly composed, but I'm not sure about the flat concrete bit to the right, or the girl on the right who's partly out of the picture. The 3 women on the left are excellent.

I love the individual elements of your scene. Your environment, your characters, the mood.

However, and I'm going to be blunt here, I think you have to much going on. It seems like there are several dynamic things happening in an enclosed area none of which have much to do with one another. Its like there are three vignettes being portrayed in this image.

I would suggest you either integrate the elements of your scene into a more cohesive whole or focus on one part of it.

But to clarify again... I do think the individual elements look great.

Your update to the "beast girl" looks great, I really like the change. Only critique is on the previous post, the figures don't really seem tied to the scene yet, the lighting and shadows just seem off a bit (specifically since there are no shadows at their feet).

Quite likely just something you hadn't gotten to yet. Really like what you've done so far though, like the concept!

I feel for your pain on doing the chains!... they take so much time and are souch repetative tasks.

The suit looks fantastic! She is looking ALOT better now. Not to mention her face and her expression!
I guess the line art was in the way earlier on. Your image is really working out great.

Hi lane - thanks dude, I think what I'm trying to achive with this composition is 'Epic'. if you do look closely you can see the sevral masters and servants/ slaves. They all have something to do with the other. If it's not evident now it will be as i near completion of this piece.

Slav - thanks dude, i wanted to give her mech gun for a hand, to protect the master. :)

Jowens - thanks dude. :)

Black - thanks dude, yeah i'm not looking forward to doing the chains. But alas I must.

hi tariq, just popped in to say that itīs shaping up very beautyful.. wow.. i love the background... and the armour design on the girl is brilliant.. i like that she has no hands..
so many nice details here!

hmm.. right now itīs a little bit difficult to see the cat-master.. at the moment i think the focus is mostly on the armoured slavegirl, because she is looking in our direction.. the next thing i see is the standing girl on the left then the shiny girl with the plate.. then the master..

i do like the whole image as it is.. maybe the cat just needs more light? i donīt know.. :)
iīm very curious about the next updates!

Great work! I love the way you have taken the orientalist format and updated it. The work is resonant of Gerome , Leighton and Alma-Tadema without being derivative. It is refreshing to see someone tackling such a weighty composition without it getting cluttered and confusing. Looking forward to seeing how it all progresses...

This is an excellent image and comming along really well, but can I just point out one potential probelem.

In the rules of this Challenge, it states that one, either the master or the serevnt, NEEDS to be Human. Not a Mutant, or Humanoid, but HUMAN!
And your servent, doesnt look typically human. I know your other sevents are human, but the judges might not see them as the main servent. Just something to bare in mind.

Good luck.

I have faith you can pull this off Tariq... but ambitious seems to be a word popping into my head.

'Reactor' was a very good piece, but in the same way you agreed you were guilty of looking at that picture in its component parts, rather than as the sum of its parts... when creating it... be careful not to do the same thing here.

The qualities within your work are strong... I suppose I'm just thinking that you might possibly sell yourself short by producing a large stage beset with a myriad of characters, rather than a slightly smaller one that just hints at them...

All said and done, you have plenty of time to complete your vision, and the headway you have made so far is great... I am concerned merely that you will distract viewers from the main narrative of your work by bombarding them with little gems to tuck into.

The stated criteria for the M&S challlenge seems to be one of making the artist really work on their illustrative storytelling abilities. Art directors within advertising often criticised me in the past for putting too much in a scene... In a world where narrative and message is everything... sometimes simpler is better...

Saying that... Advertising exec's are generally complete nimrods, who get excited about the same things an imaginative human-being gets a lazy-lob over.

I digress...

You'll only produce a piece thats good, if you, yourself are happy with it... Basically; ignore me, if i'm being a git...

I only want you to do well mate, as I like your work. The babes in the piece are babes, even at this early stage, so keep it up,

Regards.

:)

Hi Ross, thanks for that great insight. I think my only true concern all along while doing this piece was composition related. i actually went into it knowing that I was going to do something that no one else was attempting. I wanted it to be in the stlye of the Orientalists , wherein i wanted it to consist of a bustling marketplace. I do agree with you that for the most part ,less is definately more, but sometimes if done right more is best. I'm 100% positive I can and will complete this well before the deadline. That is a personal challenge I have set for myself.

Wow, it's been a long time since I came here, but I love what I see definitely.
I really dig the sharp colors you are using, really sweet! The detailing is very impressive as well, but as mentioned before, I think there might be a problem with distracting the viewer from the "point of the theme" because of all the eyecandy. It might just be me though :P
Either way, I have to admit you're doig a really good job, so keep it up! :)

This is looking great, Tariq. Such a wealth of beautiful textures and details and colors and everything! And I love those clouds in the backround too. If you've got time, watch out for the tangent with the largest spaceship and the chain to the woman's neck: It looks as though the ship is a charm hanging from the chain. Good luck finishing all of the details by the deadline, can't wait to see it all finished!

youve really put a lot of detail and work into every corner of this piece. thats so admirable. but personally, it looks more like a collage than anything else. you gave everything the darkest darks and lightest lights... there is no coordination here. everything has its own light source and doesnt belong in the same scene... or at least thats what it looks like to me...

Hi all, here is my final image and backstory...

Assassin.

Holy s**t, That picture is the dogs Bo11x bro, incredible work. Actually not that big a fan of the magazine, I'm a fan of the music. But I do have a load of HM mags in my archives. Did you actually paint the metal i.e. brushwork or was it by other means. Its a stunning piece Taz. Me personally, I painted in oils for over a decade and now with painter i've started again after a 3 year lull. This is only my second painting using Painter so I think I could pretty well if I stick to it. What do you think? But I'm still working in more or less the same process as I did in oils, although I'm taking a lot more risks now and loving it, experimenting a lot more.

Tell me more about yourself, what do you do, how old are ya, intersts etc...

Oh and I've already submitted the painting, cheers for that mate.
A growing fan of your work
