My idea for Master and Servant is a funny and modern portrayal. Man and his Dog. For most dog owners, the love and commitment is a great value and responsibility a human can have. Even during such times of annoying occurrences your pet can lead you through painstaking acts. One example would be driving out at 6am to the shop, paying a hell load of money on alot of food for a big hungry dog...and taking him with you. But of course one great human emotion is the love you still give to your dog.

Here's a sketch of a commited Unknown character and his Fila Brasileiro.

Thanks for commenting on the sketch btw. :)
So I decided to work on the main character 1st. I managed for the week to model it the way I wanted. Rigging the face and adding detail on the helmet. The Hair I created using 3 splines with the ends on one point..so I can get that curly look. So far I like the character..little different from what I'm used to doing.

I'm working on facial expressions atm. The image express sort of a corky, funny feeling. I used bones to deform and create some expressions. At the same time fixinf an flaws that occur with doing so.

well the dog was fun ^__^...But now the Scooter is becoming work. Well I never model anything remotely in the category of a "Cycle". So far the plan was to be simple. Lil slow to get it look semi-real but semi-cartoonish. Been at it all day.. C&C welcome on this one.

-Gra7
The idea is the Man and Dog relationship. My image portays the Master/Servant idea, but can be defined vice-versa the Dog being the Master and the owner being the servant.

-Ace4016
Yea..its kinda hard making things the way I imagine it, especially 1st time. Sometimes with even alot of reference it doesnt come out the way I imagined it. The scooter it self is designed to be a real-life design, but exaggerated slightly.

Well..its 90% finish at least. I'm working on a texture for it, to make it look dull, used, and with stickers. Modeling time for it was a lil set back...continue it later. Need to work on the back drop..

Very much trying to stay with the concept. Sometimes I tend to go overboard, but I'm pacing everything model by model, simple and direct. But mainly it's due to my concept im working with it. Instead of someting beyond reality, doing something modern directs me to keep it clean.

The situation happening in the scene had the main character visit a food shop. This is an idea for the backdrop, a corner shop.

I'm hoping I can get time to spare down the road. But doesnt seem like it. I'm putting as much effort as I can with whatever spare time I can afford. Mainly concerning myself with the back drop. All though I got a good handle on the scene. In the end, possibly some matte painting for the far off distance may be applied. But thats in case of time and modeling constraints come into effect. But thanks for looking.:)

Adding on to the back drop, I'm pacing the time I have to get into some detail. The back drop isn't 100% important, but I want to give a good sense of realism. All though its much work, it's a simple put together that needs patience.

Here are more additions to the backdrop. Creating more buildings for the street, showing more of the environment, and giving a feeling for the surroundings. Due to this, quite possiblly may need to add extras to the scene. Which Includes cars, and more ppl. Reason for this is I'm having fun doing this lil small community. 1st for me. So might as well go all the way. But careful not to dominate from the main characters.

ace4016
04-01-2005, 10:27 PM
Pretty fast modeling. You seem to be having a lot of fun this, even made a small community. I can't wait to see the texturing. I was just thinking, one way you can keep the surrounding objects around the main characters is my bluring everything else around like the camera is set on the main characters and the rest of the scene is beign affected by motion blur (since the guy is speeding on his moped).

Yea thats a good idea. I think the blur effect maybe is the right efffect for my main shot. As soon as I can get the back drop finish, I'll start planning that, and create some test renders.

-mmoir
Yea. I was making UV's today of the buildings. Pretty eye soaring task. But I will be texturing over the weeked.

again..thx for looking.

Well..Safe to see my venture into this environment is almost at a completion. Even though there is alot more texturing to do, and details to add to the backdrop. I decided to model a Bmx Isetta to add to the street. A funny car for a funny world. Along that, a Public Bus and few more dummy cars. Texturing as of now I will leave up to system shaders, cause much time it took photoshopping my own textures. Instead of stopping for the weekened, I will work through it. Continuing the backdrop and moving onto the main character, and finishing up his body after the completion of the backdrop.

Yea..Time of day came to mind a few times. Soon as I can get the scene completed, I will focus on that. But due to my slacking last few days, I need to get back on the characters. Then I can move on to the Lighting test, cause I would feel better with the cast and scene together.:)

Back to character creation. Back to Business.

All though I began with a good head design, the body was W.I.P, mentally. Its a simple scene. With simple characters. Like I mention before, a change up from the usual. The idea I had, consist of a guy with a t-shirt and pants. As simple as that is, it's more of a workout mentally then it would seem.

Being that I'm focusing more on reality then Ficition, I did the best I could to add what is needed. But at the same time feeding my own interpertation. This includes my characters, the Doggy, and the backdrop. Even though its a simple scene, it's illustrated for at least a small amount of exageration and comedy.

Now that I solved all my rigging problems, which took many...many...many hours. The character is developed enough to pose in any which-a-way. I was able to pose him onto the scooter with no problem. So we go back to the other main character.

The k-9. To bring more comedy to the scene, the dog, all though a dog, shows intelligence. As the main superiority over the man/dog relationship, the doggy has more control over the man, then the man has over the dog. But of course, goes both ways. The exaggeration of the dog wearing goggles, shows the intellectual side. 2ndly, a sense of control.

So here is the basic main focus of the scene. All though not a finish set, still working on some texture updates and modeling tweaks. But the basic is the aboved rendering. I added a lil change up and added more details for the dog food, by adding a box on the basket. Plus, adding more cans... ^_-. The scene seems to be filling richley as I imagined. Great looking model, and I love the concept sketches. Your model has a cool cartoony style to it that works really well, and i like that you added in a lot of details. it's a nice mix of realism and stylization. Keep up the good work. Alexi

Original idea and great development! :buttrock:

The only gripe I'd make concerns the mouth area of the dog. somehow it needs some more definition, maybe by illustrating the wetness of the jowels, or making the tounge longer and flapping in the wind.

Just suggestions, nice work!

New week...

So continuing the main characters, I re-textured and added detail and fix any visual problems. Too add more light and flavor to the scene, i gave the dog a scarf after a great suggestion.

Can't say this is it, in terms of touch up, but i'll update any changes.

Next step for this Duo is setting up my lighting scene for them. But of course, when the back drop is complete.

So moving on...as the week goes..

you scene is getting better and better. i like the fresh and powerfull colors of your chars.
do you plan to add some hair for the dog? imo he looks a little bit "naked"...
let the dog look in the same direktion as the boy, then it will look like they have the same target. in the moment the dog looks like he is deaming (maybe of dogfood ;) ).

--sigh..as far as fur is going, thats best i can do. Don't have any hair plugins or any other effective method to actually make it look good. All though I will try something as the weeks go by, just to test it out what i can do as far as fur, but for now, thats pretty much whats it going to look like. I limited, even if i had a fur program, with processing power.:)

-Zlatan B.

...i fell in love with the color of the scarf...i knew somone was going to say something about its color.:) Maybe I can change it up. I'll try something.

-jarvetu

The scarf situation is at a questionable state. Like Daddy Mac mention earlier, over the shoulder seems a bit off. I will try to test out another position. Definetly a good idea to have it effective by the wind.

-tilite

Cause of the stressed from the dog, I wanted him to look a bit more beat up, so yes, the glasses are meant to be off to an angle. Probably make it even more off, cause now I look at it..doesnt seem enough.

This week I get to focus on the scene. A backdrop which will appear as the surrounding environment. All though it's been meierly just a testing phase, I was able to actually get it going clearly during the last few weeks.

These are some models that I was able to fix up and build to add to my scene. The car(known as the Sub) was a fast paced modeling session i was able to get done just a few minutes ago. The original was a old toyota, but the scene is corky, so I decided to go with the Bmw Isetta inspired / VW bugg car. Using some ideas from the scooter, inspired the final.

The grocery cart was insipred from some invoative present day designs of..shopping carts.

Now that the main characters are off my shoulder, i can focus on the scene now. With that, includes my lighting and more texturing. In the mean time, i can model some more props, including trash can and 2d trees and bushes.

Lighting set up...Part1

Lighting is always a troulesome task. So I\'m goig to experiment for today. Above is a test scene.

28 Omni lights
1 spot light
1 sun light

Of course I didnt expect it to look great. So, again..experimenting. I decided to make a few times of day. Morning, afternoon, and sun down. With that, too see which brings a good mood, and suttle life to the scene.

it's coming along nicely, the final thing i would suggest is to have the dog's head slightly tilted towards his manpet, and the dog looking down on the man to suggest that overbearing feeling. remember since your dealing with a non human dominance you need to use suggestive body language (like dogs do) to make your point.

keep up the good work!

Is looking really good. My sugestion is about the comp ... I like the more horizontal version of the image .. But I think you lost some details that you model before ... Maybe you could change the mailbox from the center of the image, to the left side of the composition, and add some shopping carts too, put then in that empty place in the street ... Oh yes and crop the image in the carīs back wheel .. removing the blank sreen in the right side of the street ...

yep that is very cool!

Well about the illumination guess by experimenting and tweaking you'll find out the wright way. From a simple object to a sophiticated scene it's always tricky so good luck. Well anyway you've already got a cool image, kind of "comics" look....
Since in radiosity you'll get quite slow rendering time and you'll might loose of this "comics" style, maybe by using a little amont of dirt in the diff channel of your BG shaders? (or dirtynut?)

and why not an HDR file for the reflections?

good continuation :)

Hello..New week...

mac_andre recommened a great plugin Di Tools. For this lighting scene I setup a Dome light, using Ditools DiCloner plugin. Along that, 2 spot lights contianing 1 warm orange and one bright white. I added some dirt to most of the walls(recommended by shtl) just to get some depth in there. Using the cloud texture, cloned and painted in photoshop, as my sky object.

Guess for now I should leave it. At least until I finsh adding the rest of the scene objects.

wow how did i miss this one... well this one is the most fun and unique style here in this challange... its very simple while wery stylish, and at the same time shows off ur talent... i think u did a great job modleing everything and nice textureing too.. in the first test layout, the light looks really good, but the building in the backgorund looks a bit flat. mayb throuhgting some dirt testures will add more depth to them. And i think the landscape view works better with ur scene. i agree with arrecheaoscar69, u should add some secondery motion in ur scene which will add more dynamic effect. i enjoyed ur work.. keep them comming....

You did lost little of the comics style but imho the atmosphere is absolutily great like this:thumbsup:
Little more realistic than stylised, but there is a strong feeling of kind of near sea scene, i can almost feel fresh air from the sea :) (and your sky is wonderfull too)
Definitively one of the most original image of this contest  , with also alotof personnality, it's cool

and i'll go check thoose Ditools too  it's great!

i'll join the motion suggestion, depending on the final comp and its dynamic lines...

there is something else that i noticed many times without being very sure about it, it's the full black advertising...(with a cute white chara, it's small so i'm not sure of what it is).
Since you seem to have choosen the closer shot comp (wich is more effective) , it wont be very disturbing, but since the large comp is also abolutely wonderfull, for an other render i would have puted this black advertising (wich is too mutch eye catching) in a very dark grey, with a painted dirt color channel fusionned with the illustration logo, so it wont be like "pure flat black ".... Just an humble suggestion that might not be a good one but i had to write it:D

ouf!

anyway good continuation :applause:

Considering the time left. It's safe to say I completed all I can with the character. Also considering the time I put on the back drop, there isn't much I can do with it. So I compeletely gone as far as I can with there parts of the project these past weeks. Now I move on....

Great work!

I like the expression of the character
And i agree with arrecheaoscar69, the string of the bag is too bright

Sleepinglion great finish on the models. They're full of character. Have you thought about making the dogs ear flutter in the wind??

Getting better and better!

How about a little chrome on the scooter.

Looking Great!

I think the dog might need some eye contact with the ground in front of them, it looks like he's currently staring blankly into space. Maybe he can be looking toward the boy or the direction they are travelling in.

the much beautiful cartoon render, my little opinion: the backdrop but to that it does not convince to me in the lights. optimal characters and scene modeling.

The name of the store is beign block by fence of the store try something esle. Ok yoiu want to be able to se the name of the store.http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/9/6020/6020_1114006314_medium.jpg (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/9/6020/6020_1114006314_large.jpg)

Here is the Render above of the backdrop. Conidering this the final render. Took about 3 hours to render the preview.

Lighting setup:
Dome Light
2 Spot lights
1 Sun Object

The next setup is to populate the streets with lil activity. Which includes the 1 noticably supporting character in my sketch.

I added that suggestion to the final. Now it actually fits with the action going on.

-dmonk
I added chrome off and on while messing with the textures last few days. I'll stick with the chrome.

-pixelkeg
Did the best i could with eye correction.

-Gianluca

Unfortunatly, I will loose my cartoon effect, But will maintain what I can these last few days.

-arrecheaoscar69
Gonna block the name, avoid any distractions from the image.

This is the final day to go any further with this..so I will go ahead after this this post, onto rendering the final image. I added DOF to the back drop and changed my backdrop to a more action angle to go along with the many suggestions and changes during this comp. Due to power, will have to render the characters seperate from the backdrop and composite in photoshop.

It always surprises me when I discover a high-quality thread like this for the first time this late in the contest. I don't know how yours kept sneaking by me, but I'll be keeping an eye on it now.

I prefer the second composition, although my eye isn't trained well enough for you to put much stock in that. I like seeing the scooter slightly airborne, though, and some of the background elements (the sandwich-board sign, for example) read more easily for me.

My only wish is that the scooter pair stood out a little more from the background, but I'm not experienced enough to know exactly how to do that. Perhaps a slight bit of atmospheric distance haze, or whatever it's called when things further away have a bit of a blue tint over them. It could easily be done in post, and I think it would help the colors on the main duo "pop" a bit more.

Really, though, great work. I've looked through your whole thread and I've been impressed with every render you've shown.

Hi Jacques,

-Jesterspawn
Thanks..I too started to like them airborne...I'm going to see If i can compensate for that little part into the 1st one. Aprreciate you looking..thx.:)

-JR.BRAZ
Yea..your right. That slight jump gives it that feel....Like I mentioned before...maybe I can compensate for it. Seems funny in a way like that.:)

Thx.:)

Yea..starting to think 2 and 1 is a toss up. I'll figure something out. Thx for the support and good luck.

Hi Jacques!:) Long time... hehehe... Really looks great! I prefer the second comp but the aspect render in the first seems better... a thing, it seems that you accidentally cut a piece of the "arm" of the dog (the arm on the shoulder)... but I belive it's easy to correct... Really nice work... Good lucky to you on the rest, friend!
cheers

Yea I notice the arm, just a Rigging problem. But yea easy to fix. I'm just going to do the 2nd comp. Also try to add that aspect Ratio to the 2nd scene. Thx:)

I took down the old sky backdrop, and added a StormTracer setting I modified for some quick fluffy cloud. Which were attached onto some curved splines.

Final Fixes and Color correction. Added small details. Newspaper flying in the air, tire movement, movement on the cans. Again, using stormracer, created smoke coming from the bikes rear. Im happy with the image as is.

Hello there.
Very nice image, technically very good job with the softs and plugs
So you finally found out the good way for the background commercials, it's cool.
Sounds crazy how much work there is in the BG but not shown in final image for dynamic reasons... Ha well maybe you'll use it later?

Ha hum, soory to go one more time with crits, and it's certainly too late, but maybe if the scooter and the chara hadn't the same color it would be more readable? no? well i would have tried if it was mine, but since it is not!

Anyway, glad i followed this entry, so fresh and cool, thanks for posting.
