At the edge of time and space, in the lost city of bliss, the master of puppets holds his court.
all those wishing entry to the city must go before the master for judgment,
those found worthy are granted entry, those found wanting, are dealt with by the blind master and his puppet for trying to decieve the great puller of stings, who it is said that every soul has a sting of his attached.

modeling wip and basic pose of one of the main characters.
the scene is going to be comprised of only a few characters, the master of puppets,the puppet, and maybe a few non descript types to help drive the story,"which of course im still working on, :)"

going to try to get the main characters roughed in pretty well before i start working on scene elements.

some more modeling and scale adjustments,and some test renders.

everything base modeled in zbrush, then more detailing in max.

also some basic test posing to how everything is going.

haveing alot of fun with the challenge so far, my basic story and premise is that the puppet master will be old and weak but in control of the powerful marionette.
will fill the basic story out of that, lol.

Just a base texture workup,
mostly made of shading around the edges, and some decaling.
on the puppet im keeping the txturing to a minimim and using modeling for detail,s , i plan on using most of my texture overhead on the rest of the scene and the puppet master.

used Zspheres for this part, then again detailed it out in max.

starting to solidify the scene in my brain, as to where im going with it,
going to have to come up with some crazy type perspective, but im just rolling with it so far.
thinking either weak old man for the puppet master or maybe samurai/warrior character..

My base background matte,done in zbrush.
am keeping it a zbr. file because it keeps all the z-depth information,
then am going to composite my scene right into the depth generated by the matte. :)

plane primitive that ive subdivided then alpha masked then deformed,
they make decent mountain/city scapes
these im going to use to build a mointain range into the matte.

this is where im at so far.

The Throne of the Master. "hes still out to lunch" :)

starting to fill out the scene, doing lighting tests,and general element placing.
im finalizing the masters concept, ive decided hes going to be a ming the merciless type =robes,ornamentaion and such, very old and wizened "touch crazed" blind and at the controls of his minion..

body modeled in zbrush out of zspheres
the robes were modeled by alpha masking a line and extruding along the z, the deformed using regular push pull methods, then multimarked together.

test render for scale and placement.
only thing thats bothering me so far is that ive have everything setup for a full frontal final rendering, and its going to limit the 3d aspect of the final image and giving it a nice depth is going to be a challenge.

started working on the masters head, this is going to be the basic look,
eyes are just place holders, ears are pretty rough but im going to cover most of them with some kind of hairstyle, head modeled from a sub-d sphere, hair mad using the alpha mask=make 3d=extrude method. tutorials for both the cloth and hair can be found at the zbrush website, use the search box

The result is extreme, signifying you as great frescoer in the ancient Greek or Roman style...The details are great but the images seem loosing a bit their 3rd dimension, aren't they?

more work on the masters head model, making it older and more emaciated to better match the body also working on hair of some type, i like the fu-manchu mustach, prob a beard.

different perspective im thinking.
i agree about the full on perspective really robs it of depth. thinking seriously about this angle.
with a temple complex before the minion/puppet..
the gist of the story so far is.
" at the end of the universe in the lost city of bliss resides, "the great puller of strings" the master of puppets to which all souls have one of his stings attached, along with his feared minion the "Karakuri Ningyou" that is used to punish thos who invoke his wrath."

hey man once again great work from you dude.. been watching.. so yeah i do agree with this new perspective it does rob the scene of depth(the first post of composition) but the new render look alot better alot more clearer and doesnt hide your hard work into all the props etc.. but still will show your master servant relationship.. great stuff man...

started the wrinke textures, im not going to go too over board because of distance and angle most wont show up in the final anyways..

I think that you should take care at your background. It's beautiful but too many details could "eat" your characters which are very detailed too. Despite that, everything's okay !:bounce:

starting to texture his head and work on hair.
test render checking bumps/wrinkles, and developing shaders.

think its homo-sapien enough for my human element? if your wondering about his eyes the character is going to be blind..thats why he has a string attached to everything....zee?

im working pretty hard on it, and will for the next few weeks, "after that i need to go find a way to feed myself!" but i will finish it, one way or another.
so far im having alot of fun with it, and learning a bunch as i go..this is by far the largest thing ive attempted, and my first cg challenge, so i really appreciate all the support that everyone has shown, you guys," and girls :) " are the best.

the1st-angel - i will humanize him a little bit more as i go along..the character is going to be an old asian gentleman,"im not sure how to explain how he is 50 stories tall, and omnipotent" but he will have 10 fingers and 10 toes and thats human enough for me, :D j/k.

Mireneye, the hair is made making an alpha made up of a bunch of "dots" if you will, then using the make alpha 3d command, then just stretching and subdividing till you get a nice long strand of "hair" then multimarking them together and using deformation to get your general shape..
its not pretty, but it works!

more lower poly, stuctures for scene detailing.
most of these will just use low res tiling textures and shaders.
bigger temple complex used a few parts of my puppet for its stucture.

im still not sure about a blue sky backdrop...might try a few different color schemes just to see.

Just insane! Fantastic objects, super high amount of details, lovely components. i feel like the composition is a bit overbusy at the moment, but its early, so no further crits on it.

ive thought it over and im going to rework the master.
im going for a more dynamic pose of the master rather than just arms out stretched, that and ive remodeled his head for a open mouth and some teeth, to give him more expressions.

That is some crazy detail! Great looking model, I especially like the swords and armour. My only suggestion would be to increase the size of the guy's arms and neck, it just seems like they could be thicker (in relation to the size of his torso). The hands are also looking a little flat. Anyway, it's looking really cool, keep up the good work. Alexi.

Like the enviroment stuff. Very detailed. And I agree with the1st_angel, the hands are bit flat. Plus the masters neck is too thick at it's base and too thin at head's base. All the rest is great.

Doing some trees rough out the throne area a little bit. just did the trunk and one "limb" multimarked the limb together a few times to build up basic branch structure, then multimark a few of those together to get decent back ground trees..

full scene render test with master and servant roughly in place.
testing for scale and perspective, hoping everything will go and line up as im seeing it in my mind.
that and looking for shading gremlins and artifacting..rendering times are getting pretty high, around 3 hours for this test.

Brilliant work! I love how you're using the 3d medium as fluidly as paint, & you're adding detail freely & easily. If this is rendered out of zbrush, could you add an occlusion/dirtmap effect? That might help further define the forms since it's getting quite crowded now.

i know its getting rather crowded, but hopefull with the right lighting solution anf fog depth it will pop out as pretty evenly balanced..hopefully, :)

'Mb i was going to max for the final but the poly count and the way ive done alot of the work into the matte would require alot of reworking..it could be done tho, but making allthe displacment maps and such would be a monumental undertaking. i am going to go with a GI type lighting with zbrush's cavity shader,"dirt shader" and that will refine out the shapes better..im hoping anyways, lol

Hi there, Interesting piece you are working on. I just have a couple of comments that you might already be aware of, anyways...

I think it is way too busy, details are great to have but I couldn't focus on anything. The characters are almost at the same visual level as the bottom building, it isn't quite clear what's going on. The fog helps to push back the mountain :thumbsup:. Maybe some DOF or darkening some areas will help define the background and foreground elements.

heres another small update, starting to work on a pose for the master, that and working on background fading.

im having some luck baking different fog layers for depth and fading the background, i want the details visable if your looking, but very soft.. and trying to give the master a sense of motion. and am still not solid on a color scheme,,want it to be a nice balance of light and dark..if i can find such a thing, lol

Ohh - this is coming on just great! Really impressive.

I think the gold/green colors you got could work very well, perhaps if you darkened the background in the left area a bit it could give some better sense of depth? Maybe blurring it, or reduce contrast could help.
Your modeling skills are insane - this piece looks very promising :thumbsup:

posed the hands and and am still thinking about the puppet, hes going to get a face lift of some kind, the head and sword are just place holder elements, until i figure out where im going with the puppet, right now hes a little "too" mechanised.
im thinking about reworking the torso into somthing a little more organic and flowing...

type one of the swords the servant is going to br holding,will prob do another sword or weapon type for the other group of arms.
nurb modeled the blade out in rhino, then exported and deformed in zbrush, then used zbrush to model the grip,guard and pommel then textured and multimarked together.

crying horn- yeah the fog and sky is giving me trouble, cant seem to find a happy medium.

A I R , im almost scared to post all my wips, :) i have about 4 gig of wip data at every step od development, if you want to see anything in particular let me know and ill post it.

i sure appreciate everyones crits and comments they are keeping me going, i know its a busy composition so far but im going to try to pull it all together and smooth it out for the final.
and hey this is my first cg talk challenge, im trying to put a good foot forward!

if anyone has any questions or want to know how i did any particular thing ask away! thats half the fun, learning new stuff, :)
ive been looking around and there are all kinds of great work going on, and lots of different approaches to things, its all been worth it so far just for the learning experience!

started to finish detailing out the puppet.

am trying to get away from the robot look, i want it to look like a construct, but not really "robot",
so i reworked the torso to look more organic and armour clad "i hope" and filled out his extremeties with assorted spikes, cladding and armour type details.
still havent decided on his head , its either helmet spectre type adornment, or more organic and beast like. the beast is winning the vote so far.

oh sigh, insane insane! Your modeling and polyrocking is plutonium on the coresplit. boom wow. love the compotest 106, maybe the foreground fogg is a bit to strongly structured what distracts a bit cuz your creation is rich in details shapes and elements. so your compo maybe gets a bit overbusy. i suggest to hold fogeffects and skydome silent to not make the whole work appear "noisy"... of course thats just me :)
the sword is so awesome, could i have to for hanging them over my fireplace? i promise, i just will hold them in honor and only use them on very special ocasions, like on clientvisits caused by their unwill to pay bills :p
the pose so far looks good, i'd maybe turn the upper part of the torso a bit (swordhand backwards) and bring one hand forward to point a target what gives him the feeling to next strike something down... just maybe. :)

starting to work on the servant's head.
i think this is going to be the overall shape, i know it resembles the master somewhat and isnt robotic, but im going to armour him up a little and detail him out. but this is the basic shape that im going with.also his basic texturing, going to use a combination of light tex maps and shaders.
and am giving thought to having the servant in a defiant type posture, maybe facing the master and hacking at his chains,, will try it in a composition to see how it goes.

starting my final composite, i was goinf to try a few other things but time is short.

pretty happy with it over all, its busy, but most of my stuff is so i can live with that.

will prob composite it all in, and keep my materials live for final adjustment's, do a final final render for shadows, then bake it with a few fog layers to lock it all together.
at least thats the theory :)

did this the other day and thought it looked pretty psycho, and it has more of the look i was going for.

The greeen is kinda freaky I think, the good thing is that it gives a much better focus for the foreground, the less good is that it's very green... perhaps you could try desaturate it a bit so it doesn't risk popping out in the middle top area? I still think green is an excellent choice here - keep tweaking! :thumbsup:

doing the chains for the puppet and still tweaking the render and doing general detailing.
its a busy mess right now, but i hope to tune the color palette and fog fading to smooth it all out in the final..hopefully,:)

very light color correction painting in a few areas so far, thats it.

yeah, the final will be fully shadowed, these are just test renders, about 1-2 minutes without shadows, around 5 hours with them on, ;)
