View Full Version : thermal shader
derwolpertinger 09-24-2002, 04:58 PM just found a maya shader that provides a "thermal" look. so i recreated it with c4d(sla), nothing superspecial but if someone wants to use it feel free to download ! :)

..as i said: simple. :D but works pretty nice when you gotta create this style.

Just testing my sla-guessing skills;)

nice touch...simple but effective especially with the rise in x-ray imagery i've seen recently...you can now add the thermal imaging look...and a doddle it is 2.
So tank you.

sorry just had another thought so returned to post again.
Just out of interest have you got any goodie ideas for that cool looking heat haze you get coming off the objects under some thermal imaging...cos that would really crown the imaging look and feel you get from those settings you posted?

sorry i don't exactly understand what you mean.:hmm: can you show me an image of what you mean? that would be really helpful. :)

Errh no not really got anything to hand to show you.
What i mean is sometimes under thermal imaging you get a sort of heat haze rising off objects. Say a view of a human through an imager and you would get breath still thermal colour spectrum but heat haze in appearance. You also get haze off the top of a humans head say. Dunno if this cleared it up. I'll try and look for something. Also say you viewed a house through an imager you would get around windows...but more likely emitted from the roof where there was poor insulation.
Any ideas?

haze thing i talked about its hard to see on stills but when you watch a video you can see thermal heat haze rising of human.
reference site out of interest:

hope don't break copy and upset anybody...but came from site above so they get the hits.

another.
shows as a glow on still....just imagine...a mirage...or jet plane exhaust haze and then coloured.

think i understood, it the base colours also have to be more irregular i think. i'll work on that now. :) as for the haze i think that would be more a particle than a shader thing. gotta think about it. but thx for the hints!:D

To simulate that its cooler around the edges, you could add fresnal

try the dvgarage web site for some great tutorials. they have one on a heat haze as produced from a roof vent.

number 14.
i think a few of these have been on the cover discs of 3d world magazine (i think)

cool shader mate, i had a play added water to the bump channel.
blue light behind looks quite cool.
mike.
For haze try the power gradient {c++ sdk} it has the noise type feature and would be perfect for a haze effected gradient :)

I think there is definitely a style showing through now...I think you could go for the first stylized image posted or the later ones and they are both pretty effective in their own settings.
The later images have really come along considering it was just an experiment initially...so well done all....big PAT PAT on the back boys/girls. Oh and thanks for sharing the shaders....It just shows what groups like these and the sharing of knowledge can achieve very very quickly.
Youre welcome dude
