View Full Version : Key for snap to vertex - can't remember
madart 03-22-2005, 05:02 PM Such a simple little thing, which key do I press while I move a vertex to another one, so that the vertex will snap to the other one? In Maya it's the "V" key. I've tried a few keys without luck...

right click on the snap button in the main toolbar and click in the checkbox next to vertex ;)

Thanks Olli, but what I'm after is a keyboard shortcut. I have used it before, but I just can't remember which key it was.
I prefer not to have vertex ticked in that "snap" dialogue box.

This is a wierd thing in max.
1) Select your object.
2) Hold Shit and Right Click
3) Select Vertex snap
4) Pick the object at the Vertex you want to start the transform command (i.e. Move)
5) While you have the left button held (<-- that is important) hold down Shift and Right Click again (rememeber do all this with the left button down)
6) When the RClick menu comes up you can let go of the left button then click on the Vertex snap again (when you click on the vertex snap do not let go of the left button).
Here is the weird part...At this point you will notice that the snaping is not happening. In order for the snap to work you need to do steps 5 and 6 again.
Strange, I know, it sounds like a lot of steps but once you get used to it, it is easy.

All that shift right click in the middle of operations sounds like way too much hard work and too many clicks for my liking.
The easiest way to do it is just to set up vertex snap as above, make sure the snap mode is 3d in a perspective view or 2.5d in a planar view (or 2d as you want) and just press s to toggle the snap on or off as you want it.
I don't understand why you don't want to have vertex selected in the snap dialogue box, that's exactly what you need to snap from and to verts. You just need to toggle it on and off as required. Mine is usually set to both vertex and grid and I'll toggle between 2.5d and 3 when moving between perspective and planar views. (Oh how I wish the mode was based on the view type as I ALWAYS forget when toggling between view types).

Of course that is much easier. The cool thing with the steps above is, you can access any snap type at anytime you want without having to set the snap up.
For example if you do not want vertex snap active all the time you could just use the right click steps above when you need it.
Again, once you do it a few times and it becomes second nature it is not that complicated.

Thanks for your help, but I remember pressing a key while dragging the vertex to another.
Phormis, thanks for the explanation, but 51 steps... ok 6 steps... to get this little vertex snap is much to long for me, I prefer as few clicks as possible to get where I want...
robinb, I usually did what you said, until someone told me which key to press to snap.... because it's easier and better, IMO.
This is driving me nuts... maybe I will snap... just joking...

I agree it is a pain. There should be a way to assign hotkeys to each off the snaps.
Of couse I do not mean a snap toggle hotkey. You should be able to hit "V", like you were saying, and be able to grap any vertex, or "P" for pivot etc.
Sorry mey way seems too complicated.

It's just different ways of working, different people prefer different workflows. But don't be sorry... I'm grateful for your explanation. If I do find out what I'm looking for... it could actually be a combination of keys... well anyway... I'll post it here, for anyone who is interested.
