hey - thanks for all the nice comments, it was a pleasure to compete with so many great artists!

this will be my final for 2d, i think. i'm much more proud of it, than my 3d image, i think it was because of lack of freetime the last weeks.

till next time!

Title: Harpy

and here's my 2d image, based on greek mythology, as my 3d one...

just blocked out some basic forms, basically it will be a big landscape with rocks, clouds and mountains. on the left side a harpy in his nest, on the right side a frightened man with two sheeps.

story: the harpy is pretty old, as long as the man remembers they have sent a sheep to her, otherwise the harpy would have attacked the village. but recently the harpy got a child and one sheep is not enough now...

main composition and light established.

harsh backlight on the harpy (will change the pose, i think) and frontal lighting on the man with the sheep.

i fear detailing the rocks, does anyone of the masters here have some good advices?

adding some details.
on my todo-list
- bones on the rocks
- village in background
- volumeous dark clouds in background
- more light from the right side

WHAAAA?!! This is amaaaaazing! GREAT composition, has an epic feel to it (but I'd like to see the foreground figure larger and the guy next to the sheep almost gets lost among the landscape) and I love the subtle colour palette you've chosen... very misty and moody. Those detailed textures on the rocks... that's brilliant stuff! God, it must take you AGES to do that... please tell me it took you ages to do that.

I'll be keepin' an eye on this one. VERY nice work thus far.

Cheers!

Holy crap!
That's really impressive.
I like the new pose of the harpy better.

whoah, i've got replys in the 2d section, thank you guys.

yes, it took me ages to do all that rock stuff, but the possibility to create your own brushes in photoshop also helps ALOT. but all in all i'm not that experienced in 2d stuff and it was a lot of trial and error....

thanks again :)

Is the background 3D generated of photograph? The landscapes are really awesome if they were painted in.

actually it does look pretty messy in full detail. it lives because of the small size, the grainy and rocky brushes i used and the unsharp filter somehow gives the whole picture strange rock details i even didn't painted. i'm not that good in shading smooth surfaces, but those messy things work quite well with brushed created from rocks, stones and grass.

i did use photo references, yes, for color and dimension and to create some brushes. and i used a photo reference for the pose of the harpy.
