Egil Paulsen has entered the Master and Servant 2D.

Challenge Page (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/masterandservant/view_entries.php?challenger=5935)

Latest Update: Final Image: The Shepherd
http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/8/5935/5935_1116440085_medium.jpg (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/8/5935/5935_1116440085_large.jpg)

http://ep-arts.com/images/misc/shepherd_detail.jpg

I am the good shepherd.
The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep
The hired hand is not the shepherd who owns the sheep
The hired hand runs away
because he is a hired hand
and cares nothing for the sheep
I am the good shepherd
(John 10)

Give the hungry their bread
and they will follow you
Serve a scapegoat on the table
and they will only worship you
if only you know seen the truth
then your followers will believe you blindly

The first impression of this picture might be a sense of blasphemy, but that wasn’t meant to be. I am inspired by the relationship between the master and the servants’ history in the western world with religion as a strong factor of power. I am inspired by Christianity as power.

If you believe in only one God, this God leads you and makes your reality. If there is only one who leads the way, there is no other way to follow. The good shepherd protects his sheep and leads them to their salvation. What makes the shepherd good, if there are no other shepherds to compare with?

I have already set up my background concept for this entry.

I am going to use religious references such as the Shepherd and the followers/believers. Religion isn't just philosophy alone, but also a tool of control. I can not find a concept more fitting than the role of the good shepherd and his followers.

This is an early illustration of the Shepherd that is willing to sacrifice his life by showing the way:

http://www.ep-arts.com/images/freehand/goater.jpg

P
(John 10:11)
I am the good shepherd.
The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep
The hired hand is not the shepherd who owns the sheep
The hired hand runs away
because he is a hired hand
and cares nothing for the sheep
I am the good shepherd

--
The goater that saves our souls...
In case you wonder why does the character have six fingers on one hand. This is not a rip off from Giger's Alien designs. It's a reference to Seraphim, a religious reference. Angels were said to have six fingers on one hand.

.the Servants

As for this contest, and the the concept of the Shepherd and the followers, I also like to play with who we believe in?

Ofcourse we have to believe in those who have seen with their own eyes. The one who cannot believe before he can see it with his own eyes, is not a true believer..
-Take Thomas the doubter when Jesus confronts him (..new testament. holy bible)

"Among the blind ones, the one-eyed domain" - old saying.

Therefor I am going to make the servant(s) blind. The master will perhaps also have one eye, just to promote this idea..

Another pencilscetch depicting the servants eating the scapegoat that is served on the table:

http://www.ep-arts.com/images/freehand/peasants.jpg

0
Give the people bread
and they will follow you
Serve a scapegoat on the table
and they will only worship you
if only you have seen the truth
then your followers will believe you blindly

Illustration of christianity as a religion and its history of demonizing the freethinkers.
I aim to the witches, alchemists and even rock stars. Isn't it just lovely to have somebody to hate? Someone to feed on?

A very quick sketch!
As I have posted in my thread, I am taking this in a religious direction, using the metaphor of the sheeps and the good shepherd. However I try to use irony as I present the servants as blind humans dressed in sheepwool. I wish i had more time to do this

Fantastic! The colors are subtle, and there are great touched of hue in there. That pink reflected light under her neck is great! It reminds me of James Whistler's famous painting of his mother (http://www.google.com/url?sa=U&start=1&q=http://www.jssgallery.org/Other_Artists/Whistler/Whistler%27s_Mother.htm&e=10129) which is also famous for its understated and well-used color. (So in case it wasn't clear, comparing your piece to that is a big comlement!:) )

Can't wait to see how it all comes together!

Hey there,

I think you should go with your original idea of the skeletons at the table, it is much more original and looks a lot cooler.
I really like your sketching style.
If you are going to go with your female model, I think you should consider making the background brighter and the foreground darker and move the model a little towards the back. That way you will have depth within your picture. Right now it's looking rather flat.
Hope this helps!

paperclip: thanks for the advices.. sorry I havent mentioned it, but that scetch is just a closeup of the whole painting im scetching as I speak. There will be more characters and they will be a bit skeletal as the early sketches. They will also have more interresting details..

thanks beelow, im gonna put alot effort in personality to them

Woa Walrus.. thats too kind! I love this painting actually, but im giving the Master a bit more young spirit for the sake of attraction ;)

This is closer to the final composition where I got a sky background and perhaps a green field where the servants 'bate'

Its more dramatic now, and I like how the lighting is for now. Perhaps Ill give it a colder tone with warmer spots where its important

What do u plan to do for the background may i ask?

eparts
04-06-2005, 09:48 PM
CoreyArtE,
Im not entirely sure.. but Im thinking an open plain.. darker than where the Shepherd stands.. like she is enlightening the followers. I was also thinking about a corn field or something.. decorated with Scarecrows..

You need a scarecrow to let the corn grow. The followers are hungry, and they must not get the wrong seeds...

This is a delightfully creepy take on the traditional shepherd/flock relationship. And while I do adore this very dark setup (which seems to imply a protective-yet-dominating interaction), you could go waaaaaay the other way and have an innocuous, almost friendly meadow as a background (just for a disturbing contrast). Can't wait to see more!

This is really rather dark and creepy... I love it! If those figures at the bottom have the same amazing skeletal look you had in that first sketch, it will look awesome. You have a nice balance to the figures, it would be nice to see some real longing in the body language of the demony things she's herding, a want to be near there master, it would contrast very well with the lovely distant look you have in her body language. And your pallette is beautiful, like you say the odd warm touch will really pull out the bits you want noticed. Great work!

Lineart for the face, so I got a guideline to color over. Note the lightdirection is top right and slightly from our location.. I keep making these 3d guidelines so that I can shade it easier.. this is NOT a 3d render, as someone asked me once :P

I just gonna start up with the face so I got something to do.. I usually get a more decent idea of the final image when I work with it. baby steps :)

Ive started some rough coloring.. similar to oil techniques.. I will use softer brushes later and work more on the details.. so far she looks too hard and has no good face expression. I find it really interresting working with her mouth.. one little stroke and her smile is totally different

very good work so far. i like the colour range. i have a few points on the latest pic - the rightside of the face is turned a little too far, i think you'd probably see more of it(looks like her face is narrow), also the rhs under the chin looks abit wrong (but thats probably just the sketch).maybe both of those are due to the jawline from your lineart. mostly a matter of personal taste.

eparts
04-07-2005, 07:18 PM
thanks ghostinthemachine for the sharp eye on anatomy :) I agree her cheek is a bit too high.. the jawline wasn't complete, even if i spent alot time figuring it out! Her hair should be a bit closer to the head i suppose.. but thats because I have only made the main shadown from the hair. I will paint on hair and eyebrows later.

About the chin.. around the mouth? thats because of my rough scetching at first. I like to make every face shape very clear, so I know the anatomy well. later I hide wrinkles and other traces of muscles.

Note that her right eye will later be hidden behind her cloak.. because .. well. she is supposed to only have one eye..

Working more detailed on the face. This is a 100% closeup. I should have used a bigger resolution, but the total image will get too big! Suprisingly fun to paint that ear.. This face angle is SO HARD, but it turns out really cool. This painting has the best depth Ive made so far.

I am thinking about ear decorations and more interresting makeup.. Ill leave it here for now, I want to go on painting now

OOPS: I just noticed her ear doesn't follow the same angle as teh rest of the face. thanks to a friend who yelled that out :)

hi!
you have a very interesting idea and conception about religion, and using this in a creative way (like you do now) you should get something very surprising! (and the jury like that, don't they ? ;))
you're doing well so far ! you've kinda found the right colors for your shepard lady :D! Go on!
as for the servants, hmmm, i don't reaaally like their faces (i mean: c'mon man, our reality is not so cruel! or is it? ;)). you can try to paint more human faces for them, but not too human :).
i keep my eyes on you ! :D

More designs

Of the several sacred monograms of Christ, the Chi Rho is one of the most ancient. It is generally formed of the Greek letters chi (X) and rho (P). These are the first letters of the Greek word \\\"XPICTOC\\\" (pronounced Christos), which means \\\"Christ.\\\" The monogram has been styled in a variety of imaginative ways over the centuries. Other symbols are sometimes added to the monogram to call to mind a particular attribute of our Lord.

Ive taken the most usual monograms which you can find in churches and made the necklace into this form, where the \\\"P\\\" is styled to look like a shepherd\\\'s crook, a reminder that Jesus is the Good Shepherd.

Love the way this one's turning out... good job! Especially on the woman's face. Nice!

Anatomy... hmm, well the only thing with the woman I can see, is the arm resting on one of the guy's head seems a little awkward (due to foreshortening?), but I'll imagine you will take care of that in the cleanup paint process. I think the other arm is fine, in regards to proportion.

Love the designs for her jewelry and hair clip. Great style too, almost like watercolour... what program are you using?

artjounkie: yeah, i think this will be a hard part. I will have to ask someone to pose it for me I guess. I worry most about the length and so on. the angle decides that, but its hard to tell if she is reaching a bit forward than to the side. it can be solved with the shading i believe.

First-off I really like the religious aspects in your piece. The concept of the Jacob's ladder-esque creeps surrounding the woman here evoke a strong sense of place, of a moment in time coming together in just the right way.

Often times the master of many servants becomes a servant herself to the group as a whole and I think that making these creatures disfigured and grotesque really nails that subtle juxtaposition.

As for the anatomy in this piece, it feels like if you want her to dominate her subjects wholly - you may want to accentuate her hips at least as much as you did her shoulders. While I doubt that any of her proportions were intentionally decided upon for the express emotive quality of her figure ( more just that she's there in the scene than what her pose and sum physical expression convey ) I think you've made some really strong choices and carrying them just a bit further would really make this piece scream.

You've created these gangly creatures that are both fragile and ominous, and giving her more "life" would probably be a perfect balance for that, polarizing the overall tone of live and death that you're setting up.

tingham, thanks for the comment! i think its really inspiring to me

ive been thinking alot about the hips, and talked to others.. youre have a very good point. and yeah, women with good hips and breasts are being looked upon as more healthy and will be a perfect mother who gives birth. like she will now become a super human.. an ideal image of mothers. :) sounds sick of me, but true in many ways.

my other characters are getting fragile and old yeah.. just being close with this shepherd gives them life.. inspire them to search what they wish - eternal life

Okay. this is the final sketch/composition. New from last one is that the canvas is wider, so I got room for another servant. the new servant is crawling up right in front of the master, like trying to get attention. She sees right trough him now. Ive added some wool to the servants.. im looking forward to detail that.
other than that.. fun with the servants.. I almost made a Giger's alien of the middle one there. behind the master lies the 'black sheep'. I think that makes a good contrast.
Please tell me if you see any anatomy mistakes on the arms before i start detailing them. The sky is more bloodred and dramatic now.

working on the servants. I want to provoke some sort of twisted satisfaction by getting attention from Mistress. half playful to mistress, but still shows fear.

I line out sort of 3d wire-skeleton so i can get a grasp of the shading afterwards. im not using reference for these fellas.. but i quite enjoy being this free. and it doesnt really matter if they get a little..missplaced :)

Good evening Egil

so let's have a look to your mistress' hands. Maybe you can try to close her left hand, wrapping all her finger around the staff. Add some shadow like post #45.I'm little bit worried about her left arm which seem to be too short and set in a strange way... It's funny that i have the same problem.

Hope these little thoughts will help

the 10th step so far. With help from useful critics about the anatomy, ive moved the hand who's holding the staff a bit closer. looks more natural. Thanks spacenail

Here i am showing some of my reference lines that I am using. Note how the positions of the shepherd's hands matches the Golden rectangle.
Her face and details really follows the action of the image, where everything focuses against the middle.

The Golden Rectangle is the superimposed Spiral within it and has the process of squaring the rectangle to create an
infinite number of addition rectangles with the Divine Ration of 1.6; the length of the rectangle divided by its width. This ratio is used by Da Vinci as well as many artists. I thought it would be interresting to use this for my piece, as if it should get more complex by doing it :)

Men på bakrunden ser det ut som at lyset er ganske gult, men refleksionen i munnen virker ganske hvit. Jeg kan ta feil, himmelen er jo fortsatt på skisse nivå. :)

The most important thing in the golden rectangle is its proportions i.e if you inscribe something in it, the form will get the golden proportion. And this spiral should be the most important thing in your work. Every shape, detail, accent should follow its curve. In fact, you should draw the curve first and everything else have to be a result of it. It's a way to put the forms on its "golden" (not right) places and its nothing more than simple geometry.

THe dudes.. yes. are you pointing at the anatomy and shading, or just the faces in general? i know they are weird, but in which way is hard to know.

Thanks nebezial. Ive followed your tip, and try to tone her down a little, however not too much! she must have wide shoulders, long neck etc :)

Nice work! 'aud' linked me. ^_^

Anyway, I think the ear should be a bit higher and the hairline should come in a bit closer in the eye/eybrow area. The neck on the left side towards the lower part is a bit too wide. I would also bring some of the rich coppery brown of the background into the shaded areas of her skin.

eparts
04-25-2005, 07:13 PM
goktug: thanks alot :D glad you dropped by. I love your 3d entry so far btw, gotta write in your thread soon!

hey Oz, how are you doing. nice you dropped by with your hard critics (aud says so) :D
I know about the ear.. really hard to work with this angle. I will work more with the ear later.. I dont feel much for ears right now. but thats for pointing out. i guess its very important then :)
the hairline.. well i thought the same about my model, but i guess some people look like that :) Note that her hair is set up like that, and the hard light makes the hair more bright and not so visible.

ozhaver
04-25-2005, 08:20 PM
=D yeah you're right about the hairline, some people are like that...I do prefer the little triangular shape because it brings more attention to the eyes (since it points there and creates an angle). But the pink splash there is working along that way.

And now that I see it again...Hmmm just for experimenting:

Have you tried using a very low opacity brush with very light blue/minty green on her skin?
Why not make the enviroment harsher on the characters like making the cloth flutter more in the wind add more movement to her hair- it would bring a good contrast of pose vs strenght, more drama. And, where is the bright white light coming from?

Just poking your brain with random thoughts. ;-)

eparts
04-25-2005, 09:29 PM
Thanks for the tricky thoughts ;)

Yes ive been working alot with the colortone.. saturating her and the background to blue, red and more tones.. THe one I am working on now is more blue/red moonlight. I know the background doesnt match the light on the characters yet.. because I havent really made a background yet!
I guess its really hard to explain what I am doing here.. the WIP images aren't following my mind quite :)

What i think so far: the background is going to be far more brighter and more contrasted, as the characters are. I want to keep this blue red sort and a sort of violet overall

stop messing with the hairline.. its allowed to be different.. it gives me the chance of painting this pink line she has!

I have been working more with the dress lately, but i dont wish to post anything yet. I am making it more dramatic, using inspirations like this:

I have had serious fun with drawing clothes now.. yeah, it can actually be quite captivating. I am ready to take the critics! I havent had reference on this, so I dont expect this to be taken seriously.

the image is mirrored so I can compare the propotions easier.. quite hard when you study an image that long!

alot of work, but might not see a bit difference at first. Ive been working with the background more.. its brighter and more detailed.. i think its going to be even brighter, atleast when i get to the final highlighting.

the servant number 2 has changed his pose. I think this gives an extra effect of how the relationship is between the servants. also started adding the wool on the servants backs.. this will be fun :P

Cool, another viking here at cgtalk! (we just keep popping out, don't we?) :)

I think the first version is the best, where the girl stands on the left side of the picture. Not sure why I think that however I first focus on her expression, then leading her hand down to the three characters as her servants. Looks very good, keep it up!

thanks AM7:
its a good point.. Ive been discussing this now by Oz and some. You say it serves the eyes well with the lines from her face and down to the servant wich is the second main character in the image. By seeing the servants and then stop at the expression of the shepherd it gives something more i think.

BUT I dont believe this is a rule I should follow, because its mainly based on western writing traditions and comics where you read from top left to bottom right.

At the same time, this line guides the attention away from the shepherd/mistress. With the shepherd to the right, it looks like she is the goal that the servants are approaching.

would love to hear more thoughts while i work on details :)

am7
05-01-2005, 04:14 PM
I noticed now that the two flipped images aren't the exact same, perhaps I liked the one with the master on the left side better because I thought it had a more overall darker sky behind her, giving off better contrast - thus making us read the picture better (atleast I did).

eparts
05-01-2005, 04:19 PM
thanks medusa. i agree

Another thing that bothers me is that I am soon going to start painting the ground, which leads to a little problem ive caused.
There is a sort of perspective that lets the viewer see both up in the sky and down on the ground... like some panorama shot. It makes it quite hard to know where the feet should be placed etc.
How does the characters look so far? Our shepherd here has quite long legs, and I feel the perspective is kind of wrong how she stands now, and the same goes with her leg anatomy :P

eparts
05-01-2005, 04:24 PM
AM7: yeah it was very stupied of me not to show the identical versions up against each other.

And yes, the sky and all around was very dark compared to what it actually is as original (last image posted) I made it more contrasted and darker because I believe it will be like this as a final. But i cant make it too dark, because the shepherds skin is very bright. Where is all the light coming from?? (but hey, she is actually most of the light ...)

am7
05-01-2005, 04:40 PM
You could perhaps solve that light issue, by dropping some lightbeams that strike down on the shephards face/body through some openings the clouds above her (which we would not see ofcourse - limited by your canvas). And you could hence dim the light on her leg (not that important) Highlights like that would also help to draw the attention and focal point to her.

eparts
05-02-2005, 09:40 AM
am7, yeah ive been working on that.. the clouds sort of goes in a circle around her. a sort of gateway into the sky above her would look great. I dont want to make too heavy lightrays though, because it can turn out a bit cliche i guess.. and it can spoil the light direction, which will leave me with more shading work :)

chaot1c1. thanks for the support. as soon as i got the leg problem solved, i will paint as hell to reach the final coloring milestone :)

ozhaver
05-02-2005, 11:40 AM
I prefer the darker sky, but won't tell for sure until it's utterly done.

Her right arm and leg look a bit weird...I think perhaps the creature near the edge of the canvas should be lower to bring a more dramatic line towards her face and so it doesn't break the curve of the ground.

Alot of detail work, light changes and I believe I finished her dress. I solved the leg problem like this.. Her pose was sort of wrong having the leg like that, so the foot coming out below the dress is sort of on tip toe.

Now I got to work more on her left hand, because it is still pretty weird I think. And then I guess I am ready for what we call the final coloring :D

Amazing work on the dress, you should be rightly proud of that! I really love her expression, and her pose. The demon creatures are very twisted... will you be leaving them with no eyes like that? I just think that's a great touch, not to mention the interaction between the two on the left. I really like the way the sky is going, I think the colours and cloud forms are looking great. Only thing that I would suggest is maybe breaking up one of the diagonals in the cloud lines, maybe closer to the horizon, where you have those smaller clouds, if they were more horizontal, you might get more of a sense it's like a big storm cloud, being swept up.

But much kudos on this so far, it's looking amazing.

Egil, I absolutely love this. I don't know how I could possibly have missed the wonderful progress, but here I am - flabbergasted and stunned.

I think the best part with the entire picture is her face and its expression. Sends shivers up my spine, it does. I'm not entirely sure what to make out of it - I can interpret it in a number of ways, which adds so much to this piece.

Don't know what else to say. I could gush about the good bits all day. The only 'bad' bit I can think of right now, and it's not particularly bad, is that it's very difficult to tell exactly what's going on with her legs. The folds of the clothes are beautiful, but they are very confusing around the knee area, and it's difficult to tell how long her legs are or what angle they're in. Perhaps if you'd bring her knees closer together and let the dress hug the thighs more closely, it would be easier to tell what's going on.

Either way, this is lovely. I'm eagerly anticipating your final submission!

The legs! Yeah, it has troubled me from the waist down ever since I started to sketch them out.. Ive tryed to make some of the folds from her dress to give a bulk out where her legs hint to be, but im not really sure myself. I will work more on that part, and thanks for the good advice about that!

In case you wonder why does the character have six fingers on one hand. This is not a rip off from Giger's Alien designs. It's a reference to Seraphim, a religious reference. Angels were said to have six fingers on one hand.

Hehe.. I know how many fingers that hand has.. Trust me, you really get time to count them while painting :D
Well, im not sure if im going to use the six finger thingie here anyways, because angels are irrelevant in this situation.. however it could symbolize somewhat a higher level - an extra finger. Atleast I find that very rewarding for the piano players.

there are 10 hands in this painting - 6 of them are visible = lots of work!!

you can see my progress here where i make direction lines for each part of the hand. this helps me to get the idea of how she will hold around the staff.

her right arm is a bit based on Michelangelo's painting Adam, however i had to feminine the hand here.. and i believe Michelangelo made Gods finger longer than the others with purpose.

I dumped the first hand-pose i had in mind, because it doesnt really look natural at all..
im not good with anatomy, and i havent used an exact reference photo either

wohoo, prob some typos here, but i dont have time to check it :P i need to paint

hi, have to say this is amazing!!!

hope you dont mind me commenting on something... the feet looks too like its just cut and pasted in... maybe it needs more shadows form the dress?

and also the dress seems abit unatural... dunno ... im not too great at cloths so cant exactly point out whats wrong :P

anyway... the main concern really is to finish!! anyway, gud luk with the challenge

daadaa: im glad you commenting. thanks for the advice about the foot. I will try to figure it out, but the light direction should make it look like this! bah, very hard. its my first foot ever!
The dress wasnt easy, and i based it on statues rather than real fabrics.. big mistake perhaps, but i wanted to have this original look to it. silk isnt an easy material to draw, i can assure you. thanks alot for the comment.

xric7: thank you for the great words :)

I am the good shepherd.
The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep
The hired hand is not the shepherd who owns the sheep
The hired hand runs away
because he is a hired hand
and cares nothing for the sheep
I am the good shepherd
(John 10)

Give the hungry their bread
and they will follow you
Serve a scapegoat on the table
and they will only worship you
if only you know seen the truth
then your followers will believe you blindly

The first impression of this picture might be a sense of blasphemy, but that wasn’t meant to be. I am inspired by the relationship between the master and the servants’ history in the western world with religion as a strong factor of power. I am inspired by Christianity as power.

If you believe in only one God, this God leads you and makes your reality. If there is only one who leads the way, there is no other way to follow. The good shepherd protects his sheep and leads them to their salvation. What makes the shepherd good, if there are no other shepherds to compare with?

Hey Egil,
Very interesting image, your image is very well done   What I get out of your image is this. The shephard in your image is really a wolf disguised as a shepherd that has lead the lambs astray. The lambs followed what they wanted(the sultry shepherd) and lead them to their deaths( their appearance as skeletons and hellish sky) By the lambs gaze, they dont recognize the situation they are in so they don't look for the real shepherd.
With regards to your question of "What makes the shepherd good, if there are no other shepherds to compare with? " I think from a lambs point of view, you compare the shepherd to the hungry wolf and go from there.
Again , great image , really interesting. Good luck with this.

Exactly.. Its hard to explain for me. What I try to say is that nobody has wrong, it all depends on who teach you the wrong.
If you are raised from child with one view of reality, for example a specific religion, you not only accept this view, but also believe in it blindly. This is what I try to visualize making the servants blind.
How can they look for the real shepherd if they have no eyes, only a mouth to eat from the 'hand that feeds'.

I felt that i had to dedicate a post for my models and inspirations.

Kira - asvison stock (http://asvison.deviantart.com/)
She is so elegant and perfect for this image. Without her face, I would never have accomplish the mood and character for this painting!

Titus, my dog :)
For this image I needed alot of study in fur and how that works.. so yeah. I sneaked up on my dog and took some photos once in a while
