Pär Tingström has entered the Master and Servant 3D.

Challenge Page (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/masterandservant/view_entries.php?challenger=5929)

Latest Update: Final Image: Monkey on Your back
http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/9/5929/5929_1116478853_medium.jpg (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/9/5929/5929_1116478853_large.jpg)

The image is now done and I’m satisfied with the result, after all it’s my first rendering ever (if you don’t count simple flat-shaded model renders) and the image is close to what I had in mind. It has been surprisingly fun to participate in the competition and to look at all the images come to life, and of course get all the feedback. I seriously didn’t think I was going to finish but after a month or so I had put to much valuable after work time into the project to quit.

The idea is simple, my first thought were a servant in some kind of submissive pose and a master standing above. I put a twist to it with some kind of “Nazi” robot play idea, and one thing led to another.
The design on the bots are in many ways kind of “tacky”, I mean they have red terminator eyes (to break through the green colour wall) breasts in metal, a vent on the head and big asses. But hey it’s supposed to be fun:).

I will now try to get some sleep before I go to work (in three hours), thanks everyone for your support and feedback and a special thanks to Janne (Carl Wahl) for trigging me to participate, sorry to see that you didn’t finish your challenge.

Good night or good morning…………..

Ok, it's rough and ugly but I really need to get started on the actual 3D scene if I'm gonna make it.

Nice. I like the feel of the scene. What is the backstory behind it?

Well those two "sado" girls are shaking hands after an intense match between their bots.
I'll start from there and see where it ends.

Ok, my first basic steps for the modelling in this scene. I will move on to the body and the rest of the scene and then add more detail where it's needed.

Nice atmosphere in your scetch!
Besides, girls in a uniform are alawys good looking! I like those black glasses.
This composition looks like a shot from a videoclip - some hard rock :)

If you consider a concept scetch of that caliber 'rough', I can't imagine what your best work looks like :) That said, I really like the concept. Your sense of color is spot on and the positioning of the robot really conveys some emotion. I really hope you can carry this through to the 3d version.

Your head model is a step in the right direction. Exquisitely detailed.

I'll be following your progress with great interest.

Thanks for the positive feedback everyone, keeps me going :)

Neeno, the polycount so far is about 750.000, it's starting to slip away. I'm seriously concerned for the rendering part, I have slim to none experience when it comes to rendering and this scene will take time to render.

I like the idea behind your drawing a lot. Have you considered a revolt by the servants? Failed or otherwise? Something to make the the scene more dynamic and to get more feeling across to the viewer? Your modeling, so far, is freakin' awesome. This has the potential to turn into something great. I hope to see more soon.

I really like what you've done, the bot looks great! I like your concept sketch a lot too...has some nice atmosphere to it. I can't wait to see this piece finished :)

If I understand correctly, did you first model a woman's body, then modify it for your bot, or was that just for reference?

If I understand correctly, did you first model a woman's body, then modify it for your bot, or was that just for reference?

I made a base body and then I used make live in Maya (a function to snap vertices to a surface) to point out a polygon surface on top of the body. In this case it was perfect and I could focus on the shape of the body plates instead of the body shape.

Thx for the kind words everyone.

IlCattivo

Hmm, I think you are right about that, it will make it look more broken and interesting if the joints are a bit dislocated. The thumb is also a problem, will make it thicker and more distinct. But most of all I hate the surface of the upper hand (or whatever it's called) need to put some thought on the design there.

The robot model is looking amazing! He's got just the right ballance of detail and functionality, so that it looks believable (that he could move around). I especially like the hydrolics in the arms and the elbow section, really cool stuff. I think the hand in the foreground could be more dramatic, maybe all the fingers could be spread out more and curled inwards. Anyway, keep up the good stuff. Alexi.

and this last GI render looks so nice
are you keeping the highly reflected material you had on your previous render or are you trying something new for texturing?

Thx a lot.

I will go with the highly reflected material for now, The drawback is that it's very heavy to render with soft shadows. It also depends on how mush texture work i manage to do, I still have the girls in the background to do. (May the gods of Z-Brush be with me.)

Since the image is so dark there is a lot of re-used textures and some simple shaders. I will improve if there is enough time and if it's needed. (All shaders are in Lambert to to show the textures)

Did some speed modeling in Maya and Z-brush today, hopefully there is no need to show here hands. She looks way to kind and not so angry at all, maybe I will go over the face in ZB if it doesn't work. Anyhow, she is supposed to be angry because her bot loosed.

Tomorrow I will continue with here friend and some textures.

God natt.

Tjo, it got trough. Had some major problems to get the image rendered in final resolution. Turned out that my physical memory in Maya was set to -1 for some reason. There is still some tweaking to do (like color tweak on some of the floor plates and reflection) but I can always fall back on this one. Next big thing is to render out the room with the uniformed girls and after that the background wall.

Btw does this count as a render milestone, I mean is it enough?

DimitrisLiatsos
05-16-2005, 11:01 AM
Better post the other layers also as render milestones...just to be sure....

Awesome work mate...(i might would cut a bit the too much green in composition after...but that is just personal taste thing...)

Jeeez, thx everyone. Working my ass of to get it done. Maya crashed on me tonight, failed to write the image after the rendering was done. Probably a memory issue, one might thing that 2 G would do the job but nooo.....

But according to the counter there is still "2 days, 4 hours, 19 minutes, 58 seconds" left.
So there is no time to give up yet.

Very cool rendering!

I really like this a lot! I especially enjoy the backdrop, feels like its deap under water. Maybe put some scary ass sh#@(%T in the window area floating around, hints of it atleast. Its coming along great! Good luck with it and look forward to a complete picture!

Put the pieces together and done some "post effects". Mostly its colour correction and levels.
Don't really know what to say about the composition, it's quite simple: Master on top, servant below.

But hey it’s supposed to be fun.

I will now try to get some sleep before I go to work (in three hours), thanks everyone for your support and feedback and a special thanks to Janne (Carl Wahl) for trigging me to participate, sorry to see that you didn’t finish your challenge.

Godnigh or good morning…………..

this is the first time i've come across your entry but its certainly a great one. the rendering of metal is particularly good as it is easy for an image to become confused with that much metal, but yours manages to avoid this. I also love the colours, very refined.

good luck:thumbsup:

Hi, just want to take a chance to thank everyone for their kind words.

It feels so good to be done with this picture and finally have time to take a proper look around both the 2D and 3D threads. Looking forward to by the M&S book (if they make one) it will be full of cool images.

- Patton, yes I'm inspired by Bisley an Cunningham, I used to love Bisley more than I do today but I still like his work, especially his early ABC and Slaine comics. I have never been so found of his swelling muscles as of his great poses and painting technique.

Thanks again everyone, I can't wait to get started on my next render.

Btw, anyone heard anything from the mods, I mean what happens now. Will they just announce the winner or what? (Yes I have checked the Faq)

Cheers!

-Pelle

I was following this thread in the early stages and then lost track of it, but happened to stumble on it today. Glad I did! It came out really well! I love the camera angle, the lighting, the textures, the robot design, and those ladies, in the uniforms have a real sex appeal about them. This is definately one of my favorites in the competiton! Wish you well.
