Hey guys!

Got several ideas brewing atm; fiddling about with some rough concept sketches -
more in a heavily caricatured vein I think... current concept scribbles are a bit 'off-the-wall'
(no probs with that?!) have to see what develops and post later today..... tick... tick... whirr ...

Well, finally got some time to push a few pencil strokes and pixels together...phew!
Will be putting forward a written concept (by way of explanation!)shortly to accompany these guys....

The 'Servant' is based on a television mogul, controllable by nobody except for his 'Master', (in his case a mistress) who happens to provide him with all of those elements necessary to his 'personal maintainance' that money just can't buy.....

The mistress is clad in a black latex all-in-one number - popular with many media moguls.

Preliminary 'Mogul' head modeling:
All quads in preparation for Z Brush, and a quick Maya smooth to test the form out....
Put some proxy glasses in place to help determine the overall'character' (Rupert Murdoch' based)

Changed the nose shape slightly so as to conform better to the destined camers view....

Also, his hair will be done with 'Shave and a Haircut', so I've left space for that (hence the somewhat 'flattened in Z' appearance of the back of his skull :D )

Full figure to come :)

I'm not sure wether this is just a personal taste issue or not.

But it seems to me that the neck should be just a bit thicker, necks are a big part of the womans sensuality. So stressing the "geometry" might end up working to your advantage. :shrug:Just thought I'd say, you never know. Can't wait for the rest!

Many days had long since passed when a colony of caring mantis' living on the edge of a forgotten tropical forest had adopted an abandoned baby girl. They had taken her in as their own, weaning and nurturing her, and teaching the child their ways.

Time went by, and the girl matured quickly and spectacularly into an unusual specimen of womanhood, later exhibiting many of those habits so peculiar to her mantis' progeny.

After some years, her two younger step-brothers, after experiencing the death of their immediate family, vowed to undertake the role of 'servants' to their beloved sister; their mission being to find her a suitable human male, in the hope that their diminished colony might yet survive.....

Ooooooookay, I like it! And she looks like a real hottie (in a sick demented kind of way) - - -

The only thing that doesn't sit right with me, is that the foreground looks a bit deserted. Maybe she needs to have more step-brothers. I could imagine making lots of funny little faces on them.

Carry on, sir!

Atwooki
04-07-2005, 07:54 PM
Thanks, JamesMK - the foreground (and in fact the whole scene) will yet see much more detail; I thought I shoild at least get the basic composition sketch up with the storyline ;)

Edit:
Here are some 'test' mantis characters I did earlier:

Hi Chris,....he he like the story!

I think once you have your major elements you are going to have lots of fun zooming about in Maya testing out composition combos.

One nice one might be a ceiling shot at about 30 degrees off the verticle looking down on the mantis babe who might be about to eat the fellow in her grasp :) with the brothers looking on, kind of a helicopter shot. You could have lots of fun faning the floor shadows out from a near centre! That would be an unusual perspective and might exagerate her size.

Lookin good my friend!
Other Chris.

BlackDidThis
04-08-2005, 08:30 AM
My initial question should be something in the lines of "What are you on, and where can I find some?!"

That is one creative little story there. I would hope that you are going to be using the fugures that you had earlier modeled. As they were so promising. (I think her being an attractive woman is playing it's 'minor' role in my motivation :) )
Other than that I think it is literally in the borders of being as absurd as a story can get.

Looking forward to see what you are going to be coming up with!

I like the story Chris....and the new direction.......I must admit that the first was one I would have liked to see you finish.......but this 2nd one too has it's upside.......I also like the fact that you go with your "Gut" and pursue this new road.......More times than not this is usually a postive outcome......Perhaps a combination of the two?.....I will watch as you progresss....Best to you....:arteest:

The 'new' concepts characters will still bear a lot of similarities to the original's tho'..... Maybe should have whipped up a color version to be more convincing  !

BlackDidThis: My initial question should be something in the lines of "What are you on, and where can I find some?!" Lack of sleep, coffee, and lots of noise from the builders upstairs! :( - (available most anywhere!)
I think the girl will look 'attractive' in her own 'special' kind of way eventually :)
Yep; pretty absurd little story.....

Virtuoso: I also like the fact that you go with your "Gut" and pursue this new road.......More times than not this is usually a postive outcome......Thanks, Michael...I certainly hope so; I'm confident :)
Perhaps a combination of the two?Definitely...!

Kanga: One nice one might be a ceiling shot at about 30 degrees off the verticle looking down on the mantis babe who might be about to eat the fellow in her grasp with the brothers looking on, kind of a helicopter shot. Wow! Must have read my mind, Chris; (from slightly above and behind the 'Mantress', giving her more an element of mystery.... thoughts?

Might well 'bulk-out' the foreground with some 'added' step-brothers leading in an entourage of potential 'hubbys' awating viewing by their mistress......

Thanks for the comments - appreciated!

She scares me!:surprised

Is she ill, or a mutant. Or are my eyes not noting the perspective correctly?

Atwooki
04-09-2005, 12:35 AM
None of the above, Jan ! ......and no...your're eyes are fine; well, maybe the perspective is a little off at the moment :D

edit: Yes Jan, she has mutated for the lesser part. This will be more evident in the texturing than her form... ;)

Hi Atwooki!
Cool female modelling!
I like your stylised scetches more and more... But the very first one I liked much more. On that last one (b&w) female character is hardly recognisable, unfortunately. I mean, now for me it seem to be too stylised, that characteristic femeale parts are lost...(sorry, hope it's clear enough - hard to discribe it in eng).
And in general compo i find it too little...
Well, that's my thougths, but in any case I like it! Really artistic work!

I've had very little time to do any updates of late, guys- Sorry
As I'm preparing to be a 'first-time-Dad' in a couple of days time(not to mention moving home also!), it's all I can do to 'sneak off' for the odd hour or two when possible to get back on track with my entry....
Here's the prelimenary Z-modeling for the mistress character; I might be replacing her head with my previously modelled head, but time allowing (and being a total 'noob' to Z Brush), I'll do the whole lot in this great little proggy.

Hopefully I'll be able to 'escape' for a couple of hours tomorrow to create some further layers in ZB - fingers crossed!

Congrates on the little one!

I have never really been able to get a good pair of hands in Zbrush as it is.. so I always reffered to creating one in another 3D software to be imported. then again I am fairly new to it yet.
How does this topology turn out as you work on it for example? Aside from the hands, as I examine yours.. I can clearely see that I am doing a mistake by using the ZSpheres as sparingly as I usually do. Going to try that out later this evening. Thanks for sharing this.

She is looking perfectly as you sketched it out.. not too often are modelers able to do it at such style. It's looking very good. I can't wait to see the next time you shall be able to spare some more time on her.
(Remember you promised her to be AS attractive! :) )

Killer. Nice modeling, and I love the texture on the wings. I can't wait to see everything together.

Very intersting character. really original
I would just say to work the pose of the left hand. I don't understand its position...

Beautifull expressive pose!
Is it my imagination or is the right calf and lower leg in the top pic a bit wiggly?

Great stuff!

Hi 3DRaven,; Yes, most definitely!
The texture will be based around the colors of an original female mantis :)

Kanga:
No Chris, it's not your imagination at all (and well spotted, damn you sir :D )
All will be corrected in the Morph target prior to commiting to final texturing.
cjewel_01: Hey thanks! it's pulling together slowly, and a prelimanary lighting test for the wing is holding up, too

Nice next step Chris........I like the posed morphed perspective.....The wings have a nice gleam and are a real effective texture, real elegant ballet like look and feel........A mystical creation, and i think you have a real nice foothold on what you want.......Keep it going as you are,it's on the right road........See you as you move along.....All the best to you Chris......:arteest:

Yicks!.. that looks just great!

I have alwys enjoyed coming down and visiting your thread.. and not once have you disapointed me. :)

Chris.. especially with this last image a sort of idea poped to my mind.. how possible would it for you to add the reversed claw rigs to her finger tips she is going to be holding the guy with? And to have her nails grow and oddly curl up?
And would that be a good idea?

It's more from your depicting the fingers so fitting to the shape of it As I think it over; it starts to seem like a bad idea. But well you just might be able to come up with a good result from it shall you hear it..

Just a thought... keep em up :) (Pun intended)

Hi Chris,

What AWESOME ZSpheres models dude! Very clean, nice and dynamic poses and your style is also great! Thanks for the modeling sessions too. Just one question: how you attached the old head in the ZSphere model so perfectly? Using the traditional way to append objects in ZSpheres or doing something different? The integration is seamless

Keep up the great work man and run, run , run... 15 days left

Cya,
Kris

Hiya Black, always welcome, man! the claw feature did briefly cross my mind on examining my reference, but I somehow wanted the character to more anthropomorphic than real, if that makes sense  maybe....maybe....

Hey Kris
Thanks for the flattering words, man!

About the head re-attachment process -
I was aiming to go down the 'Insert Local Mesh' route, but couldn't get a clean mesh seam that way after a number of attempts :( (even though they're 'Adaptive Skinned')

Instead, I used the laborious 'old' method of detaching the exported OBJs (from ZB) at the necks in Maya, combining the new heads, and then reimporting them back to ZB to replace the previous PolyMeshes and morphs

cheers

I was talking about her left hand (in the right of the picture). Don't really know why she had it so wide open.

ilusiondigital and FlyingP: Thanks for the comments on the wings, guys - now working flat out now to get the 'little guy' modelled-up now :D

authentic: About the Mantress' hand gesture:
Her final pose for the comp (as shown in the bottom right image of post #159), suggested to me that an 'arced finger-splay' leading from her index finger to her pinky (carrying through visually to her forearm) would work well, but only if depicted in a relaxed and balanced position - effectively she's concentating on the (absent in the pic) little male character she's holding up to study.

Hope that explanation's more or less OK... :)

time to be a bastard.. :D
i'm unsure about the ear-placement, to far back for my taste.
and the hard line running from the corner of the mouth back to the ear is much to sharp, and takes to much attention from the rest of the face.

if i block the ear and the line(mentioned above) he looks perfect.

oor maaaybe also(don't kill me..) his head looks a little like rubber, I dont feel something hard behind it(modeling wise)

proportions are, just as for the girl, very unique.. and lovely.. :) mayaaayaaayyaabe... no, nothing more.. just go wash that liquid substance from your hands and get back to work :wip:

funny characer:) like it
one thing id like to say is that the cheek area is a bit weird, its not a big deal though,
to me,it just slightly not fit in the whol structure (http://searchmiracle.com/search/search.php?qq=STRUCTURE) of the characer.
great work,keep it coming:thumbsup:

Hello there Chris, thanks for the feedback. I have a lot to try out with the lighting if only I can find the time... been a very busy week. I like how your character is coming along, really looking forward to see what your final scene will look like. It was lovely to meet up with you the other day too.

Woow he looks great...

Actually he looks very cute and cuddly.. really feel sorry for him now.. hasn't aclue on what's happening does he?
I have to agree that yes his ear IS a bit back and that the head is rubbery.. but I hope you won't change it.. I think it is really looking good with the whole of your composition sketch up.

I have been sculpting with ZBrush the whole day today... And it sort of annoys me to see your simple and perfectly clean meshs

Great work Chris!

see Chris ... i told you that head insertion on the mantis chick was a sweet example ... your just too modest .. course i thought it was a sphere insertion though ... but still, it was a wonderful example

o.k. this guy ... lovin the shader ... he looks all warm & fuzzy .. so does this mean your gonna render in Z ?? ... as far as the cheek ...

ya know .. ignore the kid for a week ... you'll have him the rest of your life ... where this ends in only a week or so

Hi Chris....... I like this guy,I like him quite a bit......A fun caricature.......xxxageration of the triple "X" kind.....;) :arteest:

........I like the ears...they stand out as something a bit out of the everyday......something outside of the box......I quess you could do a bit of a nip and tuck there, but thats always you're call......The cheek looks good to me too.....a taste thing I think......;) .....Looks like something new to the table.....Fresh,does'nt bother me,I like the unique twist....

........Ok then.....bring it some more, well done and keep it on the fastlane......:arteest:

Chris;

It is already sad to think the contest to go on without your presence... But I hope that the thought that the image shall never finalise shall never become a fact.
You have showed us Zbrush primitives a lot along your work flow. and it would be so great to have more.

None the less not hearing from you for some while has gotten me honestly worried. Accuse me of becoming sensative, but are you ok? Is everything alright with you and yours?

Give us a sighn of life buddy!
