Frans Karel Kasper has entered the Master and Servant 2D.

Challenge Page (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/masterandservant/view_entries.php?challenger=5868)

Latest Update: Concept Sketch: Playin' around with brushes

this is just some pure research, was thinking about how i was gonna (try to) show the shadow, either as the 2dimensional shadow as we know it, or really bring it to life and try to make it 3d-looking.

-edit: and i was playing around with photoshop brush settings as well ;P-

Allso i just can't come up with a good shape/position that seems threatening enough, even tho i shud have complete freedom about what the shadow looks like :S
Anyways, just trying to keep you guys posted, thanx again for all the comment and compliments, really makes me wanne push through :)

any ideas concerning position / shape of the shadow?

Hey all,

this is a first time for me :) hope i'll get it finished... I'm participating mainly for learning reasons, since i never get to finish anything, maybe this contest is the catalyst i needed...

Good luck all of you :)

This is my first concept of the scenery, it's supposed to be some sort of cave in a mountain where you look out from.
i still think that there's something wrong here with the perspective tho :)

I think you should lower your horizon a bit since your looking from a higher angle.

Yo!

Keep up the pace! One update per day :) is the minimum! just kidding! Cool approach of the topic (scenery) after all you do have to set your image! don't forget though, that characters, emotions, hierarchy...

good luck!

keep going

:)

Its a good start. I do agree that your horizon is a little out of place

While experimenting i stumbled upon this idea...

Isn't shadow man's slave for all eternity? Yes, only this time the shadow decides to take over and show his true power. Or something like that :P

After thinking up something like that i couldn't decide wether or not to use this scene, i got a whole bunch of new ideas, but at the moment i drew this i had the idea...

I like that idea. It reminded me instantly of the Earthsea series, what with all the shadow chasing there was. :D Will be interesting to see how it develops, particularly the shadow - those seem tricky to draw upright.

well to be honest i allso don't know what style i'll be working in yet, first "project" featuring environement and characters so you never know :)

Oh and just for the record i did not make my avatar myself... I'd wish tho :)

the shadow idea is awesome, so many ways to execute this :D

This was a new idea i had, kinda made a more detailed sketch then before...

The way i thought of it viewers can interpret this picture in two different ways:
1) Human is Master, Shadow is Servant: since the shadow serves the human by allways being there, and all the things a shadow does normally.
And the Humans are the Masters since Humans pretty much can control the light.
2) Shadow is Master, Human is Servant:
Because the shadow is free to do what it wants as long as there's no light involved, you could say Humanity is enslaved by the shadow. Because the shadow is evil and humans have to choose either not to enter the shadow, or to enter it and face it's horror.

The shadow btw just some quick thingy i made, havn't put much effort in trying to make it scary yet.

Anyway, i'm very open to comments about the scene, and hints for drawing stuff since it's a first time for me. Btw: It's supposed to be an 18th century thingy.

I like this idea , if you're going to use this concept you might want to lower your camera to make the shade 'bigger' and scarier, also the girl could use a more dynamic pose. Maybe she could lay on the ground looking away from the shade with her arms before her eyes, because kiddies tend to to that when something is scary ;)
keep 'em comming :)

Wussie
03-23-2005, 06:23 PM
hmmm yeah that's a fairly good idea, maybe i'll make a portrait pic, very high and narrow, put the kid in front of the cam with her hands before her eyes, then i'll have a lot of space for the scary shadow :)

Only thing i'm wondering about is wether or not the master/servant idea will be clear enough. Imma just make a concept either tonight or tomorrow and see :)

cute sketch. best of luck in the contest. i like the idea of the shadow being the servent, or even as the master if you twist it,

This'll probably be the concept i will be using...
I chose for a portrait, high & small image so I could exadurate (probably spelled wrong) the shadow a bit, and display the immensity of the thing.

Don't know what kind of scene I will be using yet tho.

does the girl purposly have no body??

looking gud!!

03-24-2005, 03:51 PM
heh no, i just thought i'd post this and see if there were people who could talk me out of it before doing anything serious :D

Allso the girls' head first was just like the shadow, only i thought i'd study some colouring techniques before posting a worthless sketch again :)

The bodyless girl is a nice idea. I fell asleep at my keyboard but woke up when I saw that last picture. Yeah keep it up.

Wussie
03-24-2005, 04:12 PM
lol, glad i woke you up... she's gonna have a body tho :) just didn't came to it yet.
Still trying to decide wether or not to bring any detail at all in the environement, i think i could do a similar env. as my previous wip, but that's pretty hard in a small pic... Need to think it over a few times :o

i think she shud remain body less.

dunno why,i jus think it wud be cool.

03-24-2005, 04:18 PM
mmm i could make it seem that the shadow consumed the body.... allso 'd save me a lot of work :D great idea :)

Lol a bodyless servant. that would be a neat idea.Yeah that would be cool.

I like the shadow idea very much but I have seen someone else already having a go at this. Dunno who was first though and anyway I don't think it matters. There're so many participants, it's impossible to keep track of everyones work and it's inevitable that two participants go for the same thing... So what I'm trying to say: should you incidentally stuble upon the thread I'm talking about, don't worry and just continue doing your own interpretation. Good luck!

you know what I really hate? it's those people whom just circle 'round the site and control+paste one the same coment :"hey, looking good have fun blabla" crap, just to post their link. I never, ever visit their page, they dont even bother to show respect to just look the picture or even give some tought... Anyhow, I really think that it's crazy doing both 2d and 3d for a 2 mounths dead-line, but, if you think you can do it-go for it. About a picture, it looks kind of empty, so try to paint some sand storm or something and a scorhing sun hig above, that would give a little better visual feeling. Anyhow, looking good, have fun and here is my link::)
