View Full Version : Modelling clothes OVER body modell or...?
ralphreinle 03-22-2005, 11:36 AM Hi, I always had this question. I am finding somewhat difficult to formulate, but here it goes... When you're doing a character and he have clothes on. Is it better to modell only the clothes he has on? What about the body inside those clothes? Doesn't get problems animating this? How do you rig this? I mean if you have some kind of pretty baggy clothes (imagine those old clothes of the beggining of times), how do you get done this right?

Well I think that you would want to only model what will be seen at render time. I use a tool that allows you to select the parts of the character, like the legs, and simply moves those polygons out as if the mesh has grown or expanded a little bit, after that take, for example, the foot\shoe and move it up in the leg area. So it looks like the character has pants on. If you model the character and then add on top of him, delete the polygons that are on the inside. This will cut back on render times as well.

Depends on what kind of effect you're going for. If you're not going to see the character benieth the clothing and the clothing is more formfitting without a lot of play to it (think snug fitting jeans) then I'd just model them as part of the character. If you are going to see the character under the clothes, or the cloth is loose/baggy I'd concider going with a cloth simulator. If the simulator is not an option you can still model the clothes as seperate objects and hand animate their secondary movement with additional bones and such.
Personally I'd use a combination of these to achieve the look needed with as little work as possible.
