Russel, W!L, the Ninja dude :D , thanx

right well I suppose I might as well get in with a concept.

What it's my mind at the moment is more slightly more ambiguous scene,

an old "human" figure secured in a chair, in the middle of a large robotic (sentient perhaps) type machine, a row of controls for this machine in front of him with which he can control this machine to satisfy his needs, food / water / the TV / flushing the toilet etc

he controls but is dependant, so who is really the master ? .

just a thought at them moment :)

The concept has been approved by wabbit authorities. Although it means I might have to do some actual work on my short myself now, I have to wish you good luck anyway. Officially. I'll save the insults for the PMs.

Didn't think so, but I try to find conflicts even when there's none to be found :D

And nope, you can't get a real WSA this early in the game, only a preliminary approval to move on with the suggested plan.

that would be the joy stick

@Squibbit.....let me guess, your parents did much the same huh :D

@duddlebug......aren't they just :D

@W!L.....glad to hear it

yeah well anyway, back to the concept, for some reason I am thinking clockwork or the machinery, just want to make it look like he is in something big and ambiguous in overall form, and I want him to look more constrained by the whole thing. Still want to add many more controls in his reach, and then add something to the machine that gives it an identity, I want it watching him, and then there is a case of adding something to show he is being served by the machine, would also be nice to let the figure lose some of it's humanity.....all thoughts

so, started adding what I think of as the identity part of the servant and are also trying to set the mood a bit (want the environment to be ambiguous, so it's dark)

I am hoping to keep a tension between these too but still need to bring in the "servant" aspect, have yet to settle on exactly how I will do that yet.

Hey Brian,nice concept and great start!!!(now isn't that constructive?han,LOL)
Maybe it could be nice if the master had to call his machine to clean the coffee he has let fall on the ground, with this kind of embarrased look on his face towards the machine.
Any,just n idea like that,I really like your work and so I'll have my seat down here!!!

Looking good :) Right now the human looks a little metalic, though. But I'm sure that will be fixed as you go along. Are you going to make the master servent relationship more obvious? I couldn't tell what it was at first glance. Maybe have the machine performing a task for the human?

duddlebug
03-25-2005, 02:59 PM
This is looking really promising, Brian... i didn't say before, but my favourite bit is the guy's big feet...

And i'd agree with you... you still need to bring in the (more obvious) 'servant aspect'. CAn't wait to see how you do that!

you didn't read my comment under the picture did you? :D but yes still thinking about that bit although, I do have a few ideas, that being said i still want it to be a bit ambiguous :)

edit: you got in there just before me Jonny, yeah the feet were intended as a bit of fun, cool that you picked up on that :D

and I am working on it :D

he should be looking into the robotic eye....may not be so clear in lower res though. I am trying to get a bit of tension between the two......aaaaaand I think I may have just had an idea how to bring the servant idea over in a way in a way that should I hope keep the tension, just haven't got to doing it yet :)

Great work so far, I really like the background, it looks dark, yet not overly so. The little chrome ball is actually my favourite part. The whole concept reminds me of this movie, I can't remember the name, but this boy called David was brought into a spaceship with lots of cool little creatures and he moved the spaceship around with little arm pads and he was flying underwater and over desert. It was one of my favourite movies at the time. I wish I could remember the name, but anyway your sketch reminds me of it!
Great work. Would you mind telling me what sort of brushes youo're using for the background?

Love it..........this is the one.

It struck me, while i was enjoying the pic.........it seemed the balding old man has probably been served all of his life by this robot (might not be your concept, as i have'nt read every single post, so bare with me) and i thought it would be funny if the robot had a comb or brush in one arm that's rusted up and siezed as it's been out of commission for some time...........presuming the boy/ young man had his hair brushed at some time.

Anyway, i just wanted to let you know what went through my mind as i was drooling over this.

Like i wrote........love it!

Wow! This is coming out awesome! As Paul said before, there is so much story in this pic, which could be told by u, or easily imagine in the viewers mind. So much emotions in here, where that old man seams to sit there for ever.. and the focus is so well pointed on him and relation with his servant. Just beautiful! Wish to see more soon. Especially details and colors, if there will be some. Maybe some red will fit in nicely? :)

Beautiful work. I love how the old man is the only flesh and blood character in the picture. Serves the composition well that his skin is ashen rather than pink, like he's truly a part of the machine now. Shaving towel and straight razor are a nice personalized touch.

No crits whatsoever. Just restating the obvious. :D

Nice update, cool 'n moody setting, and lovely style, Brian

Maybe an idea to have the 'servo-bot' bring on some a huge platter of food? no, wait.... that thought might just have ocurred because I'm pretty hungry right now :D

As a thought, might want to watch the 'bot doesn't get 'too close' to that in the film 'Flight of the Navigator' (?)

@ artemesia66 actually A lot of it is out of scale I am still just trying to think of what bits to add, the razor seemed a logical addition to get across the concept of being served and threatened at the same time, I want the other robotic hands to hold more innocent items, I just feel it makes the razor even more threatening then somehow.

@ the1st_angel like people in here are going to behave  :D

@ Jack Youngblood, ms@zx, teknotek83, spiro, MDN67, W!L glad you guys like it

@ the Greek nut you don't really think I am afraid of wabbits do you?

@ Paul Davidson kinda like that idea to be honest, may just look into that, thanks

@NinjaASSN still thinking about the colours, sort of had beige and green tones initially in mind atm, but I still need to really to give it some deeper thought.

@Reinier yep the Machine Flesh challenge was a lot of fun too :)

@Adamos no just 2D this time around ;)

@ Ilikesoup yep just a sketch at the moment

@ Evil Gerbil would have me thinking twice too :)

@ hdri yeah keeps getting bigger and bigger but that's cool, quite impressive just how fast the turnover is in the 2D section this time too

@ Atwooki nahhh doesn't really look much like that one :D , just out of curiosity though how long ago did that movie come out :curious:

sorry if I missed anyone

also decided to add a small table with whisky decanter and a glass in his left hand.

all rough as guts at the moment, but I think I'll slowly start working on the final image now

Good luck with the painting!

Brian, this is awesome. The mood, everything. My only thought would be to put something small in the extreme foreground that would overlap the robot thingy a bit. Because of it's scale it's coming forward a bit for me. This is some awesome stuff buddy!

Haven't read the whole thread (oh, for broadband!) but what you have so far is very impressive, especially how you get that "effortless" metallic look. My one concern is that there's no bulk in the foreground, everything is very spindley. Obviously that's your intention, but I don't know, I find it a little off-putting.

Thanks guys

So, well partly because people seem to like the quality of the sketch, (and to be honest I also do myself although this really was just planned as a sketch) I thought I might as well work directly over it...well the background at least, I've done a bit of rough line work for the figure and the robot just to fix up a few things and to act as a reference layer, but the background I'll sort develop out of what I have done already, I wasn't planning any great detail there anyway. Not 'quite' the way I usually work but I don't see any reason not to and it may well be much faster in the end.

anyway here's the line work for the old guy, it's rough but enough to act as a guide

Cheers, Brian

overall the mysterious mood got my interest. There is a certain darkness and loneliness to your picture. Keep the update man.:)

damn someone noticed :scream:

the servant could be the man or the machine or the other way around

yep that was the sort of ambiguity I was trying to achieve the master has the control of but is also dependant on his servant, the question is perhaps how aware the servant is of that. That and I have also tried to leave it open to what the servant is, the whole machine built around the master is part of the servant, is it all serving the master or is it active in other ways.... :)

coming along nicely, Brian. great piece of painting on the decanter. scaling the accessories is going to be a tough call--realistically, they should be smaller, but expressively, their impact in the scene seems just about right (except maybe for the towel). if you make them smaller, how will you keep their importance? i await your brilliant solution :D

that is sort of the problem, I tried it and they sort of became insignificant, just being the size they are atm it does give the impression the servant is closer to the camera....well a bit :D .......guess it'll either work or .....er.... not :argh: :D

Really amazing stuff... love how it's all comin' together. Now that I see the entire scene, I really like the compositon and muted colour palette. Masterful artwork for sure. Can't wait to see even more piggy goodness! :D

Carry on mate!

Problem may be not just his accessories - looking at it in that light, maybe the servant is too big? Shrink him down a bit, and frame tighter. Maybe go for something more claustraphobic - although the open space lends a certain decadence and luxury.

hmmmm, it's a thought although it may well lose some of the menace

and frame tighter. Maybe go for something more claustraphobic - although the open space lends a certain decadence and luxury.

there 'may' just be other elements coming in later most likely in the foreground that may add to that, and give a bit more depth, nothings really set in stone atm and it's easy enough to play with that later :)

Lame-assed old git steps up, waving a paint-over in the air:

http://web.telia.com/~u48040664/5849_paintover.jpg

Like that... a harsh crop (gets rid of some background and makes some nice proportions)... moved the whole servant bot to the left, more upclose to the master's face and giving a nicely balanced composition... and a nifty diagonal.... and a rather kinky distribution of negative space top-left bottom-right just like that.... merely a humble suggestion of course :D

Lame-assed old git steps up

considering you're only a year older than I am what does that make me........no....um... don't answer that :argh:

you do at least usually manage to come up with well thought out critique, not that I am going to agree with every thing here James you being a git and everything :D

I principle I agree with a crop though, the background is really only meant to be supportive but is starting to get in the way which I think has been bugging me most.

Really not sure about repositioning the bot like that however, don't forget the razor blade is coming back in there, and personally I feel moving him that close lowers the tension a bit, nor do I like the gap it leaves on the right  ....but I'll think about it all the same :)

What you have done though, and for which I am most grateful, was to darken up that light section above the master, actually all n all seems he darker this picture is the better it works (hehehe or have I just been playing Doom 3 too much lately :D )

anyone else have any thoughts ?

don't answer that :argh: Aw crap.

actually all n all seems he darker this picture is the better it works (hehehe or have I just been playing Doom 3 too much lately :D )Guess the darkness underlines focus on the important elements, and adds to the somewhat sad implications of the concept as such :wise:

dammit why don't I just paint the whole thing black :lightbulb :D actually to be honest I have never really tried anything this dark before...finding it kinda tricky....that and I really want to keep a bit of the rough quality from the sketch in there too....but then I am still learning too :D

Noooo... don't do that!! (unless darkness is the master and the servant is.....naaH!)Are you using masked Multiply layers over your base layers?
I usually find it easier to 'see' what's happening in a 'lNormal' mode, then use those layers to create masks on suitable multiply/darken layers later...All that stuff etc.

Keep it steaming, Brian, and watch your e-mail in a minute ;)

nope just straight colour layers, one for the background, one for the servant, one for the master, and a rough line work layer on top set to low opacity for reference. (hahaha somehow that sounds like a verse from "baa baa black sheep")

and and many many thanks for those emails....most appreciated!!

I agree with the sligth tonedown (or lightup) of elements that disappear int the depht of nowhere... is that green fog bck there? hmmm, maybe just work out a bit of attenuation into the colorfalloff, use less yellow in the far, to pull it less towards the cam. In general, make the background have a little less contrast to not consume the mainscene. hope that makes sense

Wabbit suggestion: tha wabbitcrop looks fine, the props work, but you loose a bit the sense for the nice scale.

considering you're only a year older than I am what does that make me........no....um...

FWIW, i think i like James's more cinematic crop of the scene, but i don't think i'd move the robot over--to my eye, it makes the composition too heavy on the left, and leaves a hole on the right. love the idea of hovering sub-servants.

me think your thinkin to much .. yeah me too actually, I was hoping to keep some of the sketch quality in this, just typically the more one tries to do something like that the less it is likely to work....ahhh I'll get it sorted, something I was supposed to do next week has been moved back a few days, so I may even get some quality time to work on it

Hi there!
I really like the ambiance and the composition so far. About the balance of the image, the only thing that may be distracting is the 2 spot lights at the top-left. IMO, they attract too much attention. Great work so far! Love the chrome effect on the sphere.

I have no idea at all what could frustate you about the piece man. The composition is correct. the lighing and painting are far beyond average. you dont see this kinda stuff that much man. I think that you should be easy on yourself. this is so so so good. I would add a pale glow to it in some places, a very small bottom or side light that had a color to it. but this is so good man. wow
