Nice drawings.
well I think from the three concepts you got the last one caught my attention.
the one i really don't like is the horse girl but i guess is good to brain storm and explore new ideas.
I defenetly would like to see the girl with the robot.
good luck!

Hey Mark,

I like the #5/ trusted servant idea the most so far, it has a bit of a "judith and holofernes" feel to it, but its at an earlier moment in the story than usual. (caravaggio, gentileschi, etc) maybe test out some different angles for that if you decide to stick with it.

good luck!

Post #63 was looking good, but lo! What occurred then? The agressive expression doesn't work at all. In #63 it looks like he's going to kiss her, which adds a whole new dimension and story to the image. She's resigned to it, with tears in her eyes. Very scary and there's real emotion in the piece. The snarl is just... a snarl. Has she burned the dinner or something? If I were you I'd work on that kissing expression (get his eyes sorted, some lust burning in there! :) )

Anyhow, just my opinion. It's looking good but watch your lighting.

paperclip
03-26-2005, 02:47 PM
Hey, looking good but if I were you, I'd change the viewpoint- maybe have the 'camera' looking up from the floor, showing him towering over her and her being pulled up by him. It could be quite dramatic! You could see the ferocity in his gaze more fully and you could show her submissal by having her body pose kind of limp, but her arm kind of pushing against him. It calls out for drama!

coCoKNIght
03-26-2005, 02:59 PM
I must agree with Baron Impossible. The aggressiveness doesn't work as well as the original expression. Also with the agressive expression the woman is no servant enymore, but a prisonner who's probably been executet the next five minutes...

NOOB!
03-26-2005, 03:36 PM
i must also agree that the aggresiveness doesn't work for that image .

i prefer the first one, looks great!

Ilikesoup
03-26-2005, 04:10 PM
Actually I like #10 simply because the relationship is clear between master and servant and grabbing her by a link in her chain is such an aggressive move. I think if you choose that sketch as your final you should put it into context -- is she lazy? The leader of a riot among the other prisonners?

I like #9, too. The alien's expression makes him look very dependent and kind of sweet. I don't read much from the women, though. Maybe if it were clearer why they kept his machine running and his sippy cup filled it could be a very strong piece. Plus, it's got a cool vehicle!

Good luck and keep sketchin'!

03-26-2005, 04:22 PM
Hi element5! Just poping by, and I must agree that that agresive approach doesnt give me such an emotional feeling that a previous one.... As Baron Impossible said before me, Im the same opinion. But if u manage to move the camera paperclip adviced u, that would be something I think. Its worth a try now that u r still at the sketch progress. :)

I like the idea for sure,

and I must say that it's not dramatic enough yet, we've all seen the love affairs.
Though you'd probably be able to make something really cool of it no doubt, I thought I'd say it.:wise: What can you do?
On an anatomical note I'd strongly suggest you to bring back the teeth of the right one a bit, they are not ina desirable place.

Gotta say that if you pull it off, then it'll be great man.

@Grimreaper1981 ..I am exploring different parts.

@Squibbit ..Heaps of fun my friend

@Baron Impossible ..valid point and I have to agree, but was worth exploring if the angered master would work. Havn't yet got to the lighting stage yet.... I appreciate your input Thanx :)

@paperclip .. I may look at a different angle, Doing people is a tough one for me I am surprised I have got this far.

This last update really looks fantastic! The colors of the alien r so alive and will fit perfectly in combination with a human skin tones. Its true about her nose, needs some correction, but other than that I think its great. Expressions on characters faces r real and believable, so I can feel the master and servant relationship. Please, keep their faces as they r :) Waiting for more!

Hi Mark. Looking good! The woman's body language needs to be stronger I think. Although she might be resigned to her fate in life her hand and fingers need to be repelling him and her head needs to be twisting away to portray that fear and loathing. Good luck and I'll be watching with interest to see this progress. Claireabella

Hey, Mark! Some interesting concepts you have going here. Personally, I think you're getting colder... You had it just about perfect in the layout of sketch 8, for me anything else is downhill from there. Not everything needs to be blatant and in your face. I would have even liked #8 without the "evil" looking male in the high-tech gear and the bar code on the woman... all interesting touches, but in many ways unnecessary. The height difference between them, the single tear, and the disconcertingly gentle hand on her chin all spoke volumes. Mastery and servitude doesn't have to be about alien races enslaving others, it can just be about who wears the pants in a relationship (just an expression, as it could be the male or the female) and you so perfectly conveyed a tragically uneven power dynamic between two people in sketch 8. Plus I liked that unspoken sexual curent and the fact that your piece was much more emotional and about relationships than everyone else's shots of aliens. But hey, I'll get off my soapbox, that's just my opinion. Either way, sure it'll be good. Best of luck on it!

So many posts I will have to check more often...

@NinjaASSN .. Thanx mate I feel it does work and for the nose I will look at that when I start to colour her.

@coCoKNIght .. The A symbol is like a branding, like a property of.... with a bit of blood. not sure if that will stay it was to replace the barcode.

@Claireabella .. thanx for the suggestion I may put a hand of hers but as a servant I was thinking there may be rules like "No eye contact with the master" "No touching the master" and I placed her arms out as a form of repect or she is holding his cloak...lol

@dunkelgold .. Thanx I am thinking I may have to right a little story to go with the image.

@artjunkie .. Thanx :)

@walrus .. Thanx so much for your comment, a valid one but I think I am to far to go back now. I agree I didnt need to go this way and could have just kept it a human interaction but I do so want to do an alien/human one.. cheers

@Slav .. Thanx :)

Great seeing your development buddy, this last concept that youre colouring is great, the emotion youve put into the piece seems to be working well. Rather than being a violently forced and tortured depiction of the female its sort of showing her giving in and being very passive as youd imagine a servant being. For some reason i had the feeling that she is somehow not human herself whether shes artificial in some way, i dont know, its maybe the blank expression and the tears seem a bit fake.

Also liked the concept with the chicks servicing the huge alien car, id love to go in to a garage with my "baby" one day and instead of being greeted by some pot belly roughneck mechanic. Be greeted by a team of hot babes ready to tune my car. Every guys fantasy i think. hehe (well maybe just mine:twisted: )

Keep it up mate:thumbsup:

What about some twist in a story? Paint a remote controler in her hand and let look like that she is a master, controling him to be rough or something. That he is a robot, a model which is in control of a woman who wants to be loved! Im sick, but looking at her hand in first plan I thought of this idea.. dont listen to me :) great progress!

@THE Wizard .. Hehe yes its a woman .. Thanx for your comment I am sure I will be able to fix the look of the female in the colouring stages...

The story:

Humans are slave labour, after the harvest of 2305 by the Gunarlie Race (Who saw the humans as cattle). The Thinarl Race came and saved the human race from extinction, humans were taken under the wing of the Thinarl Guild. Humans became lower class citizens and were treated as property to be bought and sold. Occassionally a Thinarl would have feelings for the race that serves them.

Rules for serving the Thinarl:
1. No eye contact.
2. No touching the Master. ( but the master may touch)
3. Always present hands when being inspected.
4. Human females must where a head-dress ressembling the shap of the Thinarl as a form of respect.
5. Failure to abide to these rules is punishable by death.

Cheers :)

Hi Mark,

First off, thank you for your comments! I finally had a chance to look at your progress and it looks great so far. Im a huge fan of uncrowded illustrations, just one or two characters to tell a story with. The simplicity of your layout is something thats really true to what I enjoy most about that particular type of illustration.

Moving on, I like the work youve done on your last wip. The texture experimenting seems to be coming along and the lighting is great. I think the stronger light hitting the back of the neck/head looks better than the cooler pallete.

Anyhow, as I do with everyone who comments on my work, I will pay periodical visits to see how you are progressing. Thnk you again and good luck! - J

ok i waited for this to grow to the stage where i can offer an advice or two make the shadow in his eye area darker, it will set a contrast and accentuate his look, make him cast a more clearly defined shadow on her, trust me it will work wonders, the reason i know it is cause i did a scene in my comic book with a very similar composition, that shadow will set a new level of atmosphere in the picture and add a simbolic presence of domination. keep up the good work!

Yah-hoo! This one's comin' along REEEEAALLY well. Lovely details emerging. Just a few suggestions:

The orange around her mouth seems a bit strong to me, perhaps if you blended in some of her skin tone just to knock it back and make it a bit more subtle? Also, (and this may be just me) there's something about bottom her lip / lower jaw that seems a bit off... like maybe they're too far forward? I think maybe if you brought her lower jaw back it would make more of a nice, feminine profile.

Colours are brilliant and you have a great gift for rendering textures... that alien's head is spectacular! Keep up the amazing work and I'll check back for your updates. Cheers!

that line defining the chin, soften ti, it will give a feeling of global illumination oh and there are some neat tricks on how to improve the texturing on the alien ill include them too, playing with photoshop brushes is fun, try combining these brushes

Natural brushes 1and 2
special effects brushes
now when used inthe standard painting way they give u those cheap cheesy effects that just wont do... BUUUT
here goes, an interesting nature bush daisies, use it on lo opacity colour mode overlay and soft light AND DO VARY THE SIZE it will destroy the obvious use of the brush,
DODGE AND BURN stuff with daisies, aquarelle and nice dry brush for fast convincing texturework. hope this helps, play with it man, u wil be rewarded:thumbsup:

Thanx I will soften the chin shadow, As for the Natural brushes 1,2. I dont seem to have them.. is that a plug-in or is it right in front of me...lol....I have eyecandy 4000 at work but I think thats only for filters. hi!

still good work! ;)

the naturalbrush is there, so is the special effect one, but that is in the "adobe ps only" folder.
you should find them when you do right click with the brushtool and hit that upperright arrow and click load brushes, browse to the brushes folder and there they are

for the pic:

the only thing i see 'wrong' is the girls nose.. it seems to have lots of 'extra skin' at the bottom, below the nostrils.

keep going :)

I'm fairly new to this forum but I've done a piece of work very simiar to this in the past and faced some of the difficulties you have. My advice would be to tame her lip by thinning it out on the bottom on a very slight curve.. this will remove the Marlon Brando thing she's suffering. And I also did the same thing you have done with the nose... the nostril is quite sharp which makes her look like she is flaring her nostrils (Unless this is the look you ar going for) I love the concept and the scene, and can't fault the master at all :applause: . Women are a pain to get right, mainly because typical fantasy females have such minimalist faces, too much can make it look.. well... wrong lol.
Just to humour me:bounce: , try it out, if it looks ROOBASH.. let me know and I will Air-mail you a free Cornflake or something.:D

Cheers

Sorry if this post duplicates... I think admin are still proof reading them

I just wanted to tell you about a previous experience I had with a piece of work I did last year that was very similar (in layout at least). The female in this pic.. I was just wondering (if you get a chance) if you would humour me by taming her lip at the corner on a slight curve (look at a profile of a girls face in vogue or similar and copy the shape of the lip). Also the shadow on the nostril is very sharp which gives the impression that she is flaring her nostrils. Would only take about three or four minutes to do and then post...

I know this sounds a bit on the cheeky side and you might just tell me to go and eat my young... but curiosity is getting the better of me!

Let me know either way

Cheers
Jimmi

Hi Mark :] (is it okay if I call you Mark?)

You've got such a beautiful handling of her skin tones so far. She looks very warm and alive and beautiful - especially next to that... uh... thing.

I'm noticing that you're bringing in a turquoise light from the left of the image... it would be nice if it could be somehow used to bring the picture together. I realise that she'll be blocking most of it from 'him', but even so, if it's only used on her hair and her back, in such a narrowly cropped image, chances are it might end up being more confusing than helpful. Work it into the armour covering his shoulders - those would probably not be blocked by her (her being shorter and him pulling the shoulders up a little), and you could even get a very neat effect from the light: flowing in from the left, blocked partly by her but hitting him ethereally where it can reach.

Lovely work so far, anyway :D Whee!

gorvien1

Great progression on this piece!
I think the conept of the different lights entering the scene is a good idea.
Maybe I'm just echoing what Linda said. Some of the blueish light as ambient light in the shadow area of the master's face would probaly add something to the drama. That could contrast with the warm light from the right hitting her cheek as well.
Is her hand a little big?
My two cents. I'm trying hard to say more than "nice work". :)

@JimmiMak .. Double posting..I feel privilaged...lol I took your advice and worked on the nose and lips. I still want a pouty look to the lips but I did add the corners.. and her nostrils arn't so flared. Hehe I would never tell u to eat your young  Thanx for your comments and support.

@Enayla .. :) Sure you may call me by my birth name. Thanx for your suggestion I have done the test and I think it works well. i find it easy to miss such simple things when working on a project so closely. I have learnt alot from your thread and other images on CGTalk...you have inspired me to push with doing the human form. WHEE!!

@gorvien1 .. Thanx for dropping by. I really think the blue filtering through the scene works. As for her face she has a yellow tint over her which might not show in such a low res image. I am working at 3000 x 3000 and the image here is only 600 x 600.

Cheers all

Oh, I love the texturing. And also the woman's face - she's not the typical model-featured fantasy girl, which is refreshing. She actually has a slightly regal look, partly accentuated by the high bare forehead and hairpiece style. I'm getting vague thoughts of the Medicis. Maybe if the aliens hadn't taken over she'd be someone important, but in this life she's only a servant.

I was going to mention the corner-of-mouth thing, but it seems someone else got there first and it looks better now. Not sure if it could do with a little more altering, while still leaving her pouty - it's difficult to tell, so I'll leave that up to you! :)

Looking good so far, I feel you have a similar project to me - at least in that you have a beauty and the beast arrangement. So maybe you may have found the same problems, and that is particularly that you get stuck in a rut trying to get things perfect. If this is not the case feel free to ignore me, but otherwise - try creating a new layer (multiply) and go mad with shadows and lighting - you can delete the layer completely if you want after but it really helps gain that initial freedom you get when starting a project and if you like what you come up with you can keep it. I say this as I just did that and it worked wonders! As I said though, looking good, I hope you finish!

A very good work :) However, I've still got a lil' bit to carp about here.

1) The purple shade beneath the woman's chin looks a bit unnatural, where does it come from? And no one of the other shades has this deep purple color. I doubt that the sleeve around her arm is near enough to her head to cause a "reflection" of this color.

2) Her eyes look a bit "unfinished" so far, I'd add maybe a tiny white highlight spot on the eyeball.

3) Your colors are already great, but IMHO you could bring them together even a bit more... maybe you could add a bit of the sleeve's red to the shades of her turquoise cloak.

4) The background doesn't give me any idea what's going on here and where it happens, remember that it is a very important element when you want to tell a story. Right now it looks more like a blurred photo. Show the viewer a clear environment, the place where your story is acting.

However... great work so far! ^_^ Keep it up, and good luck in the challenge.

Hiya Kristina,

Thanx for dropping by and commenting :)

1. yes I see what you mean with the purple i will have to look at that in the final colouring.
2. Yes another thing to do in the final colouring, Her eye has gone flat and does need some reflection in it.
3. The red cloak she is holding for her master is a seperate piece...maybe some reflecting onto her dress may be whats needed.
4. As for the background I really dont want anything to detract from the characters and I intentionally wanted blur. When I did the Grand Space Opera I through everything into the image so I wanted to not go to far with this image.

Thankyou for taking the time to comment you have helped point out some things I didnt see..

@xric7 thanx for the support to:)

Wooah, nice metal!... much better Mark. Just a suggestion... the background is finished right? I personally find the straight white area at the top distracting, put your thumb over it to get an idea of what I mean? Also, her hand looks quite masculine (apart from the purple nail polish), just looks a little chubby maybe? Anyway nice work on the armour... looks almost egyptian!

Hiya, Thanx and yes the background was finished but I saw what you ment so I did a little playing with it ...what do you think? and also did a bit of work on the hand. My parents are egyptian mad so maybe a little influences there. The symbols represent the conquest of earth and his roll in that. It shows the ships and the planets...very symbolic :)

@Maidith I did some work on the underneath of the girls jaw...I got rid of the purple  Thanx
