Whoa! This is coming along nicely. The way you've rendered the pink/redish hilights on the face makes it look as if he's glowing from the inside. I don't know if that was intentional, but it's an excellent technique. Very cool.

Not much further on (haven't had much time) but i'm going to get stuck into it this week.

After not having much time for the Machineflesh challenge, i swore i would post more wips for this one, so here it is so far.

Slowly but surely.

More posts soon.

Good evening sir! About bloody time you updated! This FANTASTIC! Love the way the molten lava is seeping through the cracks and seams of his skin! Make the horns white hot! Just a quick suggestion, what woud it look like if you had tiny strands of the molten stuff running through his hair/ponytail? I know its still early days and you may have already thought of this!

Either way, FINISH THIS NOW!! So we can see more of it!

Inspirational.

Regarding the horns: I may or may not keep them. I painted them in to see what it would look like. When I've applied this technique to the whole of the Genie (It looks different as you go down the body as it's more molten and soft, as it's forming the Genie) I'll address the affect it has on the overall look. It already stands out a little too much for my liking. But for the moment they'll stay, and like I mentioned, I'll make a decision on that a bit later.....i'll probably make them look hot, but not like a poker...............we'll see.

Thanks everyone

Paul

ps With the response to the horns already, it's compounding any insecurities I have about them. If i'm sure about something, i'll run with it regardless, and suffer the consequences, but on this occasion, they're fighting for attention with the eyes!.........which is where I want people to look, when they check out the Genie.

As I wrote earlier...........they'll stay for now, and i'll address it at a later date.

Enayla: Of course you can.......but i've seen your work, so I think you might be teasing :)

Thanks

i see your point about the horns. IMO, I think you can "remedy"
it by making it look like the horns is shedding off some cooled down
lava. maybe cracks here and there.

just an opinion.

overall, fantastic job!

This is going much better than I feared. Honestly I had my personal doubts on your choice of his 'epiderm'. I thought it would make him look alot more like an elemental.

As I look at him now, other questions cross my mind, which I am sure they have corssed yours. He happens to have alot of jewellery. How are you going to introduce them into a surface that is at the melting point of most of the valuable ones?

Actually you may go ahead and just say that it is only colour and not heat that we are seeing here. It would go by. I just wondered if you had come up with an 'as radical' solution that would look cooler?

The image is turning out very impressive. Good luck!

Thanks for the compliments and suggestions......much appreciated.

After sleeping on it, I feel the 'hot poker style horns' are not going to work, and i'll take on board lonewolf's idea of some flaking. There'll be some glow, but not as bright. When you see the full body (have it done this week, i hope) you'll get my full idea of him cooling off, and solidifying as you go up the body (as he's materializing) And obviously white hot as you get further down. It's hard to explain in words..........a picture and all that!

Regarding the jewellery, I have no clever answer to how he could be wearing gold with him being so hot. With the suspension of disbelief, you could say it's magic, and because it's a Genie, he could have anything. This is Fantasy don't forget.....if I didn't do something because of the laws of physics I wouldn't be painting a Genie in the first place.

I understand what you are writing 'blackdidthis' but I think we should believe anything goes with a Genie. I believe the gold earrings and the like, will add to his character, the gold colour will be very complimentary........we'll see.

Keep them coming, it's making me think harder about the piece..........and that can only make it better................right?!

Thanks everyone

Paul

Paul awesome work I love your style . I have not done any personal work in a long time cause all I do is draw and paint at work . However after seeing this thread I am inspired to join the challenge !!! I love the colors on the Genie so far keep up the good work !

edit : Btw I loved the hot poker look to the horns . I really think it makes it POP emphasizing the HOT inside color theme vs COOL exterior ...like the inferno is trying to escape . For instance when I first seen the HEAD picture all I could see was the horns until I scrolled down and I immediatly said " ok this is gonna be cool "

what's up dude,

Wow...nice detailing. The colours are great. The Genie has a lot more character to it now.
As for the jewelry issue, i see what BLACKDIDTHIS is trying to say, but you're right, it is fantasy, and in fantasy world, laws of physic or reality can be bent and broken. He is a magical creature, therefore he can control or do certain things that a normal human being can't. Awesome update dude. Keep it coming.

cheers,
Archie

pogonip: I do the same thing, I draw and paint at work, so it's hard to get motivated when you get in, and all you want to do is wind down and relax....BUT........I bet you any amount of money, that you're not 'drawing and painting' exactly what would give you the most satisfaction...........these challenges give you that, and you tend to try something new (techniques etc) so they advance you as an illustrator.

Plus, the community feedback, and sharing of ideas is a great thing as it forces you to look a little harder at your artwork.

Go on....shoes and socks off......jump in the Sea-G Talk.....sorry!

Your right about that Paul . I remember before I started doing THIS for a living I would spend 12-15 hrs a day working on getting those skills tight and making the dream of doing concept art come true . Then you get there and you lose some of the personal motivation espcially if you like what you are doing . I get to work on a lot of sci-fi stuff so im pretty good in that department but I always wanted to have my work on a D&D book cover or Dragon magazine or somehting like that so maybe this challenge is what I need to get going in that Direction .

BTW do you have a website or something ?? i'd love to see more of your work ...always need a good boost of insperation :)

pogonip: I think a lot of people use this to broaden their portfolio, and exhibit versatility. D&D it is then.......get drwing up those concepts!

Website......no! I'll be setting one up this year (I said that last year.....but i'm going to this time) I need to scan in all of my work I did for Games Workshop (huge task) but i believe if you search on google and put in 'Paul Davidson art' it will point you in the direction of work i've posted in forums in the past.

Older work, but some of it still holds up.

A website is one of my priorities this year!

Thanks for the compiment over at my thread, Paul! Your piece is amazing, I love the drawing and the painting is just excellent. The "boy adventurer" reads a bit more like a twenty-something, this may be something you've gone over already in early posts (your thread is HUGE- I didn't have time to read it all!). It's fun to watch someone work who really knows what they're doing.

I hope you'll have time to share more steps with us :) Those are already very nice.

I have to say that the coloring of the genie didn't convince me (well technically I have nothing to say :) ), because for me the genius has to be more like smoke than rock. The idea of lava is great for a golem for exemple... I think with your skills you could find something less "deja vu", and more original.

Anyway it's one of the best piece in this contest, so I'm sure you'll do the best for your picture :)

I thought i'd better post to prove i'm still alive and kicking. I haven't posted since last Tuesday I believe.

I've spent a few hours working out where the lava will be on his body (trust me to create a Genie that needs the most labourious rendering applied.....oh well!)

I have'nt applied any light effects to the lava (like i started to on the face)
as I'm planning out the direction and starting point of the explosion out from the lamp. (you'll see that in my next post.

I really must learn to do this quicker. I'll make sure i spend at least 2 hours every night when i get in from work. There's so much i want to do with this, that i know i'm going to run out of time.

Kracking on..........

umm here is an advice...as much as i can offer, to speed it up use the special effects brushes and natrure brushes combined with soft light and saturated colours, it also works wonders with dodge tool, it boosted up my texturework both in quality and speed for about 40 %

paulwdavidson
04-12-2005, 11:54 AM
Thanks for the advice. I'll have to be more experimental with the brushes etc. At the moment I paint everything with the same small default brush, set to different opacities. I can't see myself trying anything different in the immediate future, as I'm in a groove with a certain technique at the moment. I will try out new stuff in the coming months, to see how the software can help me.

Regarding the lava, artjunkie: I collected a few photos of lava starting to solidify, and still looking hot at the edges. Nothing special, with my 'limited' knowledge of how light works, I'm attempting to recreate the look. I'm hoping it'll turn out OK in the end.

Cheers

You are the most amazing inspiration, Paul. Wow. Seeing how this is taking shape is great for someone like me who's only just finding her feet in the digital game. The way you've placed the cracks over his skin is fantastic, it reminds me of those weird wax sculptures you see of veins. And please tell me you were being even slightly sarcastic when you say your 'limited' knowledge of how light works!

I really liked the burning tips of his horns before... the lighting on them is what prompted the above question. You may well still be working on the face, bt his nose seems to be almost lost on his face, it blends with his mouth, perhaps a tad more contrast round the very edges might just pull it out a little. If you're still working on it, ignore my comments. Other than that, what can I say other than I love it, and that you must finish it, because this is destined for prizedom...

This is looking really nice. I'm impressed that you've already got the look of glowing heat inside the genie, it could so easily have looked like tattoos or something equally mundane. My slight concern is that you're losing a lot of great detail on the body, but I know you haven't finished the "glow" colouring yet so I'll just wait and see. Good job!

The update won't be as quick coming as I thought. I was ill last week which put me off for around 4 days, and I had a dodgy seafood pizza from a restaurant last night, so i'm feeling very ropy (up all night being sick) so I think i'm going to have a half day at work, and then rest a little. I might do more work on it tonight......the Genie will be completely finished by the weekend...........rough deadline for myself. All depends really, as Newcastle United have a busy week :

14 April
UEFA Cup
Sporting
17 April
FA Cup
Manchester United

I'll see how it goes.

Thanks for the observations.....yes, i need to punch the nose out a little. I have light coming from his nostrils, so i'll intensify the fringe lighting on the tip of it.....that should do the trick.

It might look like he's got 6 fingers, but that might be because of the lava running along them. Probably just an illusion at this stage.

Thanks

I realise that the lava on his upper body will be more defined and toned down a bit but do you think his head should be the the focal point as in the brightest part? It's probably too early for me to crit but his head is sooo cool and may get lost a little against his body... I dont know, just a thought... maybe make it red hot in parts but tone it down in others... I know too early to crit on this. Looks fantastic, you've got your work cut out... me too actually *sigh* :)

Thanks for the comments. Regarding the nails, they are going to be changed to black, to match the horns.........and they're going to be much longer, also.

There'll be a lot of things I'll change ( I guess ) as I develop the rest of the illustration I eventually fine tune areas to match. But hopefully as I paint any area i have the whole image in my head so i'm trying to minimize this.

Hi Paul! I'm loving the genie concept, and you've done a great job rendering it in your usual insanse level of detail. Are you planning on having smoke and steam being generated by him I wonder? One thing I'd suggest is maybe to tone down the brightness of the genie's pectorals because they draw the attention away from the eyes which probably should be the strongest focal point here. Can't wait to see what else you come up with, looking excellent so far!

Hi,
Nice concept and rendering.
But I find it a bit unclear : volumes of the genie aren't easy to read, and it disables the effect he could produce on the spectator. I would underlines underlines shadows, to have his head and shapes of his muscles more detached.
Good luck !

Wow Paul, this piece just gets better and better! The genie looks fabulous now, especially that trail, great effect, half way between lava and some distance galaxy, makes it look full of magical energy. Will you be coordinating the jewelery with his current colours, or going for an accent colour?

Can't wait to see how the young explorer comes together too, this piece is going to be a winner, I can just feel it.

paulwdavidson
04-18-2005, 11:37 PM
Thanks for the comments. The Genie will be looked at again towards the end of the painting process, to see if it has the effect I need it to have.....more contrast, lighter, or even lose some of the lava effect across his body etc ....It's hard to tell at this point.

It all depends on the overall look the illustration needs nearer completion. At this stage, I've painted him how i originally envisioned this lava Genie, so he'll sit happy for the moment (but i will bare in mind all of the welcome comments when the time comes)

The bracelets etc will probably be a brass/gold/marble looking material. That's what i have in mind at the moment.........we'll see.

I know already that i'll tone down his pecs, as I painted them in before the lava burst underneath, and it does lose something, and as earlier commented on, it's quite competitive with his eyes.......so that will be fixed.

I'm sure the list of fixes will grow as this piece does, but hopefully, it's my aim to bring all of the elements, once they're done, happily over the finish line together harmoniously........I hope :)

Thanks

Paul

ps also, when i'm addidng all of the atmospheric effects at the end, there will be smoke and various effects going on around him, so that'll add a lot.....they will be played by ear.........or eye!!!

chuckle...........yeah, I might have got 'into' it a little too much. I was going detail crazy that day. Since I work on certain areas at a time (compared to working all of the piece, and getting tighter as I go along) I'm usually mindful of not putting too much in at the expence of the overall illustration. I may make the bits of solidifying lava more chunky...........I'll have a look at that towards the end.

I'm starting on the boy and his pod next, so you'll see the whole shot in the next post. People who are looking at thread for thr first time don't know there is anything else apart from the Genie.

Hi, it's been a while. Since my marathon session trying to push on with the Genie (since It was totally experimental, I wasn't sure if i was going to run into problems, and therefore take a lifetime to get right) so I gave myself a bit of a break.

So here I've started to work on the background, and tie the elements together. Obviously the boy and pod need doing, but so does the pool, which i'm going to attempt some blue light coming from under the water from the submarine. i think that'll be the biggest challenge, considering it also needs light from the Genie, so i may just go for the light bouncing up from the Genie.............I'll see. I'll also be having more warm light on the cave interior.

Anyway, I believe i'll get this finished in lots of time, which is a good thing, because i think this will need a lot of tinkering until everything looks like it belongs....phew!

Cheers for all of the nice comments so far,

Paul

Genie is probably the most cliched subject for any master and servant topic. But you have taken a refreshing twist on it.

I have an idea for this painting. Because the genie is also partially made up of lava, why don't you make the genie lamp something that the 'master' found in the pool of lava. He could have used his contraption to pick it out from the melting hot lava pool and 'accidentally' activated it. Makes more sense to the otherwise unnecessary prop behind the man. Just a suggestion :)

All the best!

ok as u know...ver coll piece.

the lava smoke comming from the lamp should be...well.. im not to sure how u can fix it. it just seems move of a solid than a gas and i think u should stick to the whole traditional genie arising sceen, where the smoke get thicker as it gets closer o the genie. not breaking like a solid mist here. ok that was extreemly vauge im in a massive rush tell me is u understand or not and ill try explain..

great work

Thanks,

in answer to some of your suggestions and comments:

I will be painting into the areas of the cave walls where light is hitting them, so you will see more rock texture. I won't go overboard and do it everywhere, because i don't want to tire the eye too much............but there is detail to come.

Genie is probably the most cliched subject for any master and servant topic. But you have taken a refreshing twist on it.

I like to think it's an original take on a cliched/ popular subject, as well!

Makes more sense to the otherwise unnecessary prop behind the man

It serves the composition, guiding the eye around (at least that was my original intention) and also the justified design for me is that it is used to help navigate, push and pull through tight undergroung caverns underwater, chipping away at obstructions......and of course, an anchor. That's how i see these things in my head when i'm drawing them. I thought i'd better explain this for your interest........cheers.

the lava smoke comming from the lamp should be...well.. im not to sure how u can fix it. it just seems move of a solid than a gas and i think u should stick to the whole traditional genie arising sceen, where the smoke get thicker as it gets closer o the genie. not breaking like a solid mist here.

That would be the obvious direction to handle this, but i'm attempting something new, here. It's supposed to look more solid than gas, because i'm attempting to make it look like some sort of fire burst out of the lamp, solidifying into lava as it forms the Genie. Areas of the lava burst will be on fire, and there will be hot smoke coming from this, but not made up from smoke. Whether it works in the end, we'll just have to see..........i hope it does when i add these elements.

What i've written here, is how I initially justified it to myself in the begining.....i hope it makes sense. You have all made valid comments and suggestions, but in the end, i suppose this concept will come down to subjective taste.

Thanks again

Paul

nice one mate... the lava flow that the genie is coming fromlooks a bit flat, as in when it is going behind him...doesnt look like it is really. but othersise wow.. bee a while since i cheked this and the genie looks incredible.. how did you do the lava effect.. just painted it?

paulwdavidson
04-23-2005, 04:05 PM
Yeah, I noticed that myself, Wil, I've added more smoke since that post, that goes in front of the lava, and behind the Genie, giving the illusion that it goes behind him, now.

I just painted it (at around 200% in, to get the right detail).........it still has fire and certain effects to go on it, yet, but that will come right at the end.

Thanks

Sorry to dissapoint :) but it's hard to get the overall effect at this point, with what I intend to do with it, I hope I can swing it around for you. I know what you mean, though, I go through stages with a painting where it's not doing anything for me because all that's there are the starting points, but as I bring it all together towards the end, I 'hopefully' deliver the final result that pleases me........and others........we'll see.

I've been working on it since my last post, and i believe it to be much more realized, and it should give a good indication of what's to come at the end.......if that doesn't sell it for you, then there's always a bribe! :)

Been a while........I'm not sure how big this will be, as i'm attempting to show a few details.....anyway, i'll soon see.

I've been knackered of late, so I haven't done much. I still need to work into the cave (texture and light from the lava)

The lava burst itself will actually have fire on it in places etc

I've started the boy.........I've got a feeling i'm going to be on and off with this until I'm happy. It's an OK start, but my aim is a certain expression, and I'll keep on it until I achieve it.

As always, these things are ever evolving, so there's bound to be changes as it develops........but as these are WIP's, here it is at this stage.

Thanks for the comments so far, I am keeping them in mind as I go forward.

Cheers for the comments everyone......still needs work, obviously, but i'm quite pleased with it's direction at the moment.

NOOB: this issue has been there from the beginning. In the end I decided his body would be facing the way it is, as he's picked up the lamp (but the original face was a 3/4 and gave the impression the genie was more in front of him) so now he's startled back as the lava has burst out, and as the genie has spun around and farther into the cave, his head has turned with him, giving the impression he's looking back a little (pushing the Genie back). I think it doesn't help, the fact that it's only his head i've started to paint, so it looks like it's stuck on......making it look more awkward.

Maybe.........we'll see in a few more passes at it.

Thanks again.

I think the little dude's head in profile is fine, personally. Once it's all painted it seems to me that it would work pretty well. Nice rendering man!

It's an optical illusion, but I still think the genie looks like he's closer to the viewer than the explorer is. It could help to use some overlapping trickery to fix the problem. Make some piece of the craft he's leaning on overlap in front of the flames... have a stalagmite reaching up from behind the craft that overlaps infront of the flames...

Something....

Another smal crit: in the lava/flames just below the genie's groin area (or where his groin would be, were he not a genie) the transition from rippling lava to flaming genie mist is a bit abrupt in my opinion. Forgive me if my crit's are repetitions of other's crits... too much here to read through....

Keep it up, Paul!

Looking smashing Paul! Someones probably already asked you this, but what's the resolution you're working at?

R Frederickson:

Another smal crit: in the lava/flames just below the genie's groin area (or where his groin would be, were he not a genie) the transition from rippling lava to flaming genie mist is a bit abrupt in my opinion.

Where his six pack is, and then it goes into tiny detail is too abrupt.......I totally agree. My friend pointed this out a while ago, and I intend to make it break up in bigger pieces (one of the problems of working in too close, and getting obsessed with detail.....a serious problem with me)...........thanks for reminding me.......It'll be done at a later date.

Poshspice:

what's the resolution you're working at?

Hi Posh, from memory (cos I'm sitting having a cuppa at work at the mo) I believe it's somewhere around 4,500 by 3,600 ish I can't fully remember, but I try to make my images around 3 or 4 cm's bigger than print size.......if it's going to be printed around A4 for example.

Thanks

Paul

On my lunch at work, and thought i'd try a pass at the background alement that was suggested......putting the rock formation behind the boy and in front of the Genie helps place the characters in space. Plus with other rocks fading off into the distance, it helps to create more depth.

Personally, I think it works very well.

Great suggestion R Frederickson.

Looks fantastic. My only crit would be that the fog seems to be behaving strangely. For example, the stalagmite in the foreground would probably have a sharper silhouette against ther fog, because there is very little in front of it compare to the other stalagmites. Also, there is a big opaque spot behind the genie while the surrounding fog is much thinner. The fog would probably be thinner there, unless it got pulled up behind the genie as he passed, in which case it would probably swirl instead of clump.

Anyways, I think this is turning out great. Good job.

hey, i really like this peice, and love the way you did the genie!, but i might be a bit of a retard, but took me ages to noticed the head of the man :P... it seems the colours are too close together and i thought the head is apart of the pod.

i dont know if somebody pointed this out already, but can you make the boy's expression maybe scared & surprised... cant really tell from that resolution... also, maybe make a transition from a black smoke on the lamp's tip to a lava like thingy.... just my personal opinion...i know you are not done yet... & of course you can just ignore me... overall, amazing dude, thats one "HOT" image

Hey Paul this looking sweet. I do have a couple things that are kind of bugging me a bit, and I hesitate to even say anything because your work is top notch and maybe it's too early to comment, but here goes...

The rocks surrounding the genie to the top and top-left seem to be enclosing him and making the composition a tad claustrophobic for my taste, maybe try opening up the top to reveal more of the tunnel?

The rock pillar just in back of the boy’s craft appears to be fighting for depth with the genie the rocks and the craft; I think it flattens the painting out...

Just my opinion mind you, you work is superb. Can't wait to see your next post...

paulwdavidson
04-29-2005, 09:40 AM
Thanks for the comments.

In reply to the comments, the last post is a colour sketch from an idea given to me, and isn't on my master image (quickly done at work) so i'll be painting it in properly at a later date. So the mist and new rocks will be attempted properly. They're just placeholders to see if i liked the new additions.......which i do, so I'll try and apply them according to the scene's requirements.

I may open up the top area of the cave slightly, so it can breathe a little more, but it's a design element that contains your eye for maximum effect with the Genie. When i paintin the light on the cave from the Genie, it won't look like such a solid mass of black, which looks a little too heavy at the moment.

I know you can't see much of the boy at the moment, but his expression will have more of a sinister smile, rather than fright....he's stepping back slightly, but he knows exactly what to expect........he's been looking for this Genie for a long time, and chooses not to see the danger. He's just thinking of the power he'll gain, oblivious to the fact that he's playing with fire and is going to get his fingers burned!!

Cheers everyone.

I have family over for the weekend, so I'll start painting again on Monday (If I get some time Today I'll post because i'm off work, but i'm not sure how much time i'll have)

Thanks again for the great and observant comments and suggestions.

There's still a lot to do.....the details/texture on the rocks is being dealt with this week, as well as the sub. I've tried the sub about 4 times so far, rubbing it out and starting again. It's turning into a real nightmare......hopefully i can solve it this week. I'll start on the rocks coming out of the water also, as the last post wasn't on the master file at home, it was sketched at work.

great work, paul.

also, I agree that the added rock formations did give more depth to the image.

one suggestion though, the rock formations looks too "symmetric" or "artificial"
one way to remedy this would be distribute smaller (or larger) rock formations
beside the already placed rock formations.

just a suggestion.

Not long left....time's getting tight!

I haven't painted anything for a little while because I needed to see it with a fresh pair of eyes. My last post was done on a small jpeg saved off from this site.

So the post here is attempting to make it work on the master file. Still mucking around with it, and I'm quite happy with it's direction.....I can sort of predict in my head how it will look in the end (if i can make certain things work, of course)

A lot of tweaking at the end....the finer details that i consider the more difficult........water and the special effects coming from the lava burst and some atmospheric smoke.

Anyway, I hope you like it.

Thanks for the great comments so far.

Cheers

Hi Paul! Great process, love the way u paint this pic. But I feel like there is something messy there at the moment. I hope I expressed my self correctly. The color combination makes hard to read all the action going on. Or its too much details round the genie or its similar colors, cant say at the moment. But Its hard to read for me :/ Maybe if u would try with a complementary cololrs in the back, some green rocks or something? Just some suggestion. Other than that... wow :)

Didn't do as much as I would have liked this weekend, but i've managed to block in a fair amount of the boy.

I've been keeping his hues very earthy, with obvious warm lights from the Lava. Once I've painted all of him, I'll go back into it and tie it up. I still need to work on the face (he's going to have a slight smirk)

He's a bit hard to read with all of the dark values against the dark diving bell, but I'm sure once you add more hilights and other lighting it will read more clearly. But just something to keep your eye on... Good luck in the final stretch!

Lovely work on the boy's outfit, Paul, leather is such a pain to paint! It may just be my monitor, but the shadow you've place behind the boy's head on the sub seems to follow his profile a little too closely, though it does a grand job of making his face pop out of the darkness. Perhaps just fuzz it off a little more so the darkness isn't as shaped...

Obviously smaller developments as we get closer to the finishing line, but significant for this illustration.

At the last moment, I've changed the design of the back of the pod. Originally it was going to have a big window, but as i was painting it, it demanded more detail, and therefore detracting from the drama in front of it. As you can see, the design is more like the old deep sea diving helmets with more portholes. I may decide to have a little more light in that area (i've already hinted at it) but that will wait till the end to see if it needs it.

Still lots of smaller things to deal with ie. rocks, water, lamp, smile, gloves etc etc

One week is enough.

Hi Paul!
Something was bothering me on your lighting and I tried to figure out what it is.
While I was playing around in photoshop I found out that the geenie has the lavalike
glowing veins but actually they are not glowing that much.
The tail is burning but the environment (especially the smoke is not much lighten up
by the geenie. So I tried to bring the heat mor in focus. Using more red and orange
tones around the geenie.
(you can easily do that by using softlight layer and blocking in orange and red tones
using a huge softedged brush.)

I also think that the folds of the jacket of the master have too much contrast.
It looks more like a solit leather jacket which you cannot bend or deform in any way. If you know what I mean....and if you squint your eyes you can't actually see a jacket. You
see only the highlightpoints instead. So I think you should lighten up the shadows a bit.
I tried to do that in my op. Think the jacket works better this way.

Anyways here is the Overpaint hope you don't mind.
Cheers!

fensterer: If you've posted through the proper channel (submit entry) and not just posts in your thread, then you should be ok, and no reason for them to say you have'nt submitted your final image. I have no idea why it's still telling you that. I suggest posting the same question in the FAQ thread on the first page....the moderator should be able to sort it out for you. Sorry if I haven't been much help.

Goro: chuckle! I don't mind one little bit.....but you're trying to get to the end before me:) That's the fun part at the end , when i play around with the environment. I've put this weekend away for this task. When i paint something in, they're usually placeholders (i'm not confident enough sometimes to go straight for it....depends on how i'm feeling)
I don't have a problem with what you've done, after all, this challenge is a wip challenge to promote people learning from each other.......what you've done is cool, but isn't quite what i had in mind. Have a look again on Sunday or Monday and see if what i've done has worked or not.

I appreciate the time and help you've offered.........very cool of you, thanks.

 Hey Paul, wonderful stuff! those portholes look great. I realize it's a little (a lot) past the concept stage but thought I'd share my thoughts on the pods design... is that little digger pick axe thing responsible for that massive hole!? May I suggest showing a hint of, one or more cone shaped drilling type mechanisms on different angles situated under the pod? Kind of like the Matrix drillers... ingnore me if this has been said already, it's just your painting is just so strong and that small detail lets it down (for me anyway) otherwise looking great of course

*edited* - just realised that its a cave he's tapped into, would still be a cool idea!!
