Latest Update: Final Image: The Duke of The Moon
Here is the background story
A long time ago in Britain, a time portal appeared.
Of course, no one knew what it really was.
There were rumors of abductions.
Time after time, the portal disappeared in the growing forest.
In 2004, Agnes Whitehead, history teacher, discovered an old scroll depicting the story of a terrying "Duke of the Moon".
After many and many researches, she finally found out where the time portal was hidden.
What was a legend suddenly became true, but she didn't want anyone else to be aware of her discovery.
Taking a deep breathe, she climbed the trees and finally stepped up in front of a strange light, moved through it and "POP" disappeared.
Many years later, a space probe discovered some strange activity on the Moon.
The new International Space Consortium decided to send a mission.
Agnes'former fiancé, John Eagle, wasn't choosen to join the team.
The mission wasn't quite a success. No more transmission after landing.
John decided to do his own enquiry... You can now see what happened then.
Hope you'll enjoy it
--- Thanks for reading and being comprehensive for the numerous english mistakes ---

GOOD luck and have fun :)
03-22-2005, 09:52 AM
I think I'll be fueled with Depeche Mode's title all along this contest.:bounce:
Good luck to anyone.

Nice to see you MDN67
Happy painting and have a lot of fun
03-22-2005, 09:59 AM
hey snail , great to see u back!
03-22-2005, 07:25 PM
The Duke of the Moon.
The story is now being translated... from french brain to english language ;-p
03-22-2005, 07:27 PM
ooh looks like its gunna be a blast!
03-23-2005, 07:47 AM
Though just a rough thumbnail, your entry reminds me a bit of Geof Darrow's style -- obsessively detailed and controlled.
The pose already shows a ton of energy and emotion. This monstrosity is clearly overworked.
Make him step on the master, then take a vacation. :bounce:
Cool stuff. Looking forward to the details.
03-23-2005, 08:18 AM
Is that a small city on the top of his head? A whole civilization dependent on this giant. Great concept! Like ravioli said man, that's a good amount of detail even in this concept form. I can't wait to see how this turns out.
03-24-2005, 12:21 PM
Here are two of the numerous slaves.
The storyu telling is on its way.
03-24-2005, 12:27 PM
A very good beginning, always in your so particular style, I await the continuation
03-24-2005, 12:27 PM
Thanks for dropping in:)
jamihn : you're totally right the whole Duke is kind of a city.
ravioli_rancher : thanks for the comparison, I think my previous entries in the other challenges were pretty poor of details so, this time I'll try to add plenty useful artifacts and details.
NOOB! : hope the blast won't wipe out my computer
03-24-2005, 01:36 PM
Here's my first try for the whole composition.
The story :
- Agnes Whitehead, hitstory teacher has discovered a timewarp portal in Britain. Unfortunately, she was projected right to the Moon in a time when our satellite still was a good living planet. With her strong knowledges, she finally became the ultimate ruler of the Moon. By now, she's seeking a place to build a bridge to go back to Earth.
- While this happened a long time ago, she has become totally mad (maybe the consequences of becoming immortal)and has no common sense ever. That's why she has destroyed or enslaved the entire people of the Moon. But there are rumors of a revolution...
03-24-2005, 04:07 PM
Beautiful renderring of the servants in that one color shot. I know you're only on rough layout for the rest of the piece, but if everything in the end is rendered that well.. Wow! That's going to look great! Can't wait to see more...
03-24-2005, 10:55 PM
I've just build a rough 3D model of the Duke to use it like a wood puppet.
One word : Zbrush rocks !
03-25-2005, 12:15 AM
I agree to mike > the slaves look very convincing. Very good start.
cool - the first time I recognized someone using zbrush for this purpose.
03-25-2005, 02:08 AM
Unique concept . Seems to me that there is some GSO mixed in there, I like it. Grand Space Servant! lol
03-25-2005, 09:58 AM
Still searching a good pov
03-25-2005, 02:22 PM
I really like the slaves. Their lines give a good sense of motion. I'm interested to see how they workin the final composition. And I'm loving the Duke. Very inspired idea!
03-25-2005, 03:29 PM
Man you just rock, you're sketches are so cool, lot's of energy in them :) Can't wait to see more stuff
03-25-2005, 03:34 PM
Great start man!!!Those slaves do rock indeed and the concept is looking great.Anyway,(not really constructive there I know)Looking forward for your next moves.
All the luck and fun 2 U
03-25-2005, 04:49 PM
walrus, Fahrija, GaeasHerald, jamihn, bonestudio, OKMER :
big thanks to you, guys.
Whereas the idea is a bit too redundant in this challenge : a gigantic thing+girl, I think I'll go on with it. Maybe the girl could be a present to the Duke, given by its servants. Ireally do appreciate that you like my slaves. I'll do my best to show plenty of them.
03-25-2005, 04:54 PM
cool ! she could make the bridge out of moon fishes!
03-29-2005, 08:19 PM
Easter eggs have just popped up...
04-03-2005, 11:23 AM
Here we go...
04-03-2005, 11:29 AM
Just a detail...
04-03-2005, 11:31 AM
2nd detailed view...
04-03-2005, 12:25 PM
Great work, as i said to an other competiter, i love big scale drawing, and you got a beautiful one.
i will watch your project!
04-03-2005, 12:43 PM
Wow! I really love your concept and what lovely sketches! I especially like the composition you've chosen. Just a thought... you might want to make the woman larger in the composition to give her more presence? I guess it depends on how you paint the scene... colour could make her stand out from among that throng of servants, so maybe you don't have to enlarge her. She seems like such a cool (if a little insane) character, I'd hate to see her get lost into the background.
Anyhoo... can't wait to see you begin paints on this one! It'll rock for sure! Cheers!
my 2D entry:
04-03-2005, 05:52 PM
Yeah, she is a little bit lost in the image. The compostition is superb if you wanna depict the whole scene, but if you aim to focus on the character there is too much visual interest around. Colors definetly help, but bringing her forward, even if only a little, would be a much wiser solution. Having said all this, the image looks great and the sense of awe is perfectly achieved.
04-03-2005, 06:06 PM
04-03-2005, 06:26 PM
Thanks guys for dropping in :)
artjunkie + GaeasHerald : about the scale of the woman, you are totally right. She is too small in the picture. I've tried to have her a little bit greater, but I think she is too small at this time...
Going to eat, set the kiddies in their bedroom and come back to computer. I hope to start the colourin gwip this evening.
04-04-2005, 10:06 PM
Started with color blocking and highlights...
04-05-2005, 07:08 PM

04-05-2005, 07:33 PM
keep posting, cheers: Kornél
04-05-2005, 08:22 PM
This current submission has me mesmerized. I like it just like that. Sometimes the sketches can be so incredible on there on. And its sometimes sad to see them further developed. I trust you'll do something great with it!
this looks really good. the concept is really well done.. great work! thumbs up from me.
04-05-2005, 08:24 PM
I really really hope you keep up the lighting the way it appears to be currently heading. It's got that moody deep feel to it that really pulls in a viewer. I can't wait to see this done.
04-05-2005, 08:27 PM
how the hell cud i miss this thread.
04-05-2005, 08:44 PM
Tweaking the hair...
04-05-2005, 08:48 PM

sandsekh, kornel, Gamoron, Slav, NOOB!, beelow, taeyoungchoi
A great thank to you all :bounce::bounce:
I must say/write that yesterday in the evening, I was wondering if I'd go on with this picture... Then today... a flash : darkening the whole pic, adding green to the blue colour and wiping out the orange lighting effect.
Reading your kind comments made me wanting to keep up.... Yiiiih haaa.
Thanks a lot. Now it's my turn to take a -real- look at your works.
- Sometimes, the creation process makes the artist too much selfish...:D
04-05-2005, 10:45 PM
I cant believe I've overlooked your thread. Now that I've seen it, I can safely say that it rocks!
Great concepts and your colour WIP is coming along well, I'm inspired... ok, to the tablet!:bounce:
04-05-2005, 10:50 PM
I don't think I've seen this before - but I really like how it's going! Keep it up! :)
04-06-2005, 09:38 AM
Wow Your work is really cool I really like the way the light gives her the halo effect around her body excellent
Keep up the good work
04-06-2005, 09:46 AM
Caus' I'm at work, it's not possible to go on now. I can't wait to get my Wacom and go on.
04-06-2005, 09:47 AM
I've never seen this work before too, but very nice. The composition works well especially from grabbing the audience attention (good use of the moon as to being like a halo thing). The choice of colour works well to and the design of your characters are great. Very eerie and freaky... i love it. Keep it coming and goodluck.
04-06-2005, 10:27 AM
the colors are very nices, give an strange atmosphere at your pic
j'aime bien le choix des couleurs, elles donnent vraiment une ambiance étrange a ton ilmage, bon boulot, j'attend la suite:thumbsup:
04-06-2005, 01:54 PM
Ohh! This is yummy! Great lighting and colour! Great atmosphere! :applause:
04-06-2005, 01:58 PM
Poshspice, MDN67, Arc80, dloots : thanks a lot
04-06-2005, 04:57 PM
great coloring for now, the moon lighting is always very cool :)
I think you'll just have to be aware of the contrast to really feel the difference of distance between the foreground monsters, and the girl. Perhaps you could add some light on her machinery, like spots...
I'm waiting the next updates now :)
04-06-2005, 05:06 PM
I really like this scene! Can't say much about the shapes of your organic creatures. They look great. A little comments maybe for the form the hair of the woman create. The separation in the middle of her air seems too center in my opinion... Bah, it's still work anyway. :)
04-06-2005, 07:44 PM
is that the bridge that person is sitting on ?
nice moonlit scene, the cold mist feels great
04-06-2005, 09:54 PM
Worked a little more on the moon texture...
and made more visible the figure of the duke of the moon...
04-06-2005, 10:05 PM
Thanks for dropping in gentlemen :)
Squibbit : yes it's part of the bridge. I just have to manage with the hugeness of a 384 000 Km lunar rocky bridge
Kraull : about the woman's hair, yes it surely deserve a better treatment. I'll try to call some assistance from L'Oreal Ah ah...
bonestudio quote : "be aware of the contrast to really feel the difference of distance between the foreground monsters, and the girl" - I think the foreground servants will be clearly more detailed and many of them will tied with chains (Chain chain chain - Chains of fool ;) so the perspective will be more significant... I also keep the idea of spotlights, thanks to you
04-06-2005, 10:36 PM
Omg, one of the best compositon I've seen in this competetion I think! I mean wow, I wish I had thought of this first  No joke, this is incredible my friend
04-06-2005, 10:40 PM
this is cool. i like the color scheme... especially the high contrast areas, the dark figure with white hair against the moon is niiiiiice.
04-06-2005, 11:42 PM
Hell, yeah... this is lookin' AMAAAAZZZZING! You're really great at sculpting the forms with your paints. Great lighting too... very moody. Great work, my friend... keep it up!
04-06-2005, 11:54 PM
We are all so very screwed--the Duke of the Moon has come to take us all. The wild dominance and the powerful minions in this are great! And the monochromatic scheme of this is GORGEOUS!
04-07-2005, 02:54 AM
Incredible your light style!!!
04-07-2005, 03:40 AM
Very, very nice. Great ambience, great style, great work
04-07-2005, 06:55 AM
I love the coloration on this piece, sets a very nice tone. I also really like the character design for the woman and the figures (servents) down below...they look really cool. I look forward to seeing more!
It might be nice to add whispy thin clouds just coming over the moon, they could be all backlit and intensely white. It's hard to tell since the lefthand side in blocked in yet, but the upper section, especially the upper-right is looking a bit empty.
04-07-2005, 11:54 AM
CoreyArtE, Nigel Q, Imriela, racrufi, arlutik thanks very much for your kind support:bounce: . It adds some warmth into my heart... Drawing under this cold moon, brrrrr ;-)=
jowens : about the whispy thin clouds, I was thinking about it for while. I'll try to post some test today.
04-07-2005, 11:56 AM
The moon looks great. I love all this ghostly quality and feeling to your piece.
04-07-2005, 12:40 PM
I submit this double picture because I'm facing some kind of dilemna. May the Duke appear in this picture ? Please let me know about it.
04-07-2005, 01:08 PM
I think both images look good. but the previous image has more thing to see. Also, more dynamic look. The new one looks good too without the duke. I think the new one has more simplicity which make me focus on the main character better. My little concen is that one has too big space for the back sky without the duke. I think you may want to shift up the objects.
Great stuff! looking really good so far and I know it will be to the end of it!
04-07-2005, 02:37 PM
Put the Duke; it looks awesome. It makes a more interesting composition, and the design for the duke itself is very good.
04-07-2005, 03:14 PM
Hey, spacesnail, it's looking really nice so far. I love your painting style!
As for the question of the Duke, I think the picture is more focused without him. But if you do include him, perhaps he could be moved a little? At the moment both his shoulder and the side of his face where his eye are are both on a tangent with the moon, and it really enclosed the moon in a perhaps awkward way. But how you move him could emphasize or deemphasize his impact: Moving him down and to the left would keep him in the picture but hide a little more of him and not crowd the moon so much. Moving him up and right would overlap the moon, making him a much larger presense in the pic. I prefer the former because it keeps more focus on the main character, but that's just me.
Anyhow, great work thus far, and good luck with your decision!
04-07-2005, 05:04 PM
Just a little update...
04-07-2005, 06:35 PM
tweaking, adding, moving...
04-07-2005, 06:43 PM
taeyoungchoi, ChrisThatGuy : thanks for your comments. After all, I think the Duke HAS to be here... Just to remember he is a servant too... until he decides not to be anymore.:)
walrus : thanks for your kind advice and your good analysis. I'll try to go on with the duke anyway... for the moment ;-)
04-07-2005, 06:49 PM
Excellent work. I really like the ambiance...
I wait the next!
04-07-2005, 07:08 PM
cool~ ..i'm subscribing this one..everything is very well designed..fine composition as well as the light.good job!
04-07-2005, 11:03 PM
A little close-up of the servant. Texturing in progress... They must sweat.
04-08-2005, 02:55 AM
 What i think of this pic is beyond words! The blueish color sets the right mood and the contrast between the woman and the background makes it impossible to miss her. The orange highlights here and there also help define the shapes and add cromatic variation.
04-08-2005, 09:38 AM
i was about to send u a message, but then my computer went down..
u have great sense of details, i especialy like your contouring- like colouring, it look very sharp!you got some great sketches, and i think the orange highlights will be a great idea.:)
04-08-2005, 09:43 AM
it is an impressive image, great composition and details, but i must warn u here, be careful, u might wanna show her face, if u go through the rules ull see what i mean.
04-08-2005, 12:04 PM
Thanks to you GaeasHerald, calisto and nebezial
Thanks also for the warning, so I've started to make her face more visible... but maybe too cute for a mad woman ?
04-08-2005, 12:05 PM
I think there is some problem with her hands...
04-08-2005, 12:13 PM
i reckon make the eyes more menacing more slanted maybe, i dunno just an idea
04-08-2005, 01:01 PM
Maybe her expression is a little too neutral to really show madness?
As for the hands... well, they might just lack a little definition in comparison to all the rest.
In any case, I really love the mood and the composition of your image. Subscription! :D
04-08-2005, 01:44 PM
I agree with Crowley, you just need to define and give details to the hand. about her expression, maybe a little movement on the mouht part would to the trick, because personally, i kinda like the eyes that big. It has that eerie stare going on to it. The whole piece is coming along nicely and the composition is working really well. can't wait for more.
Archie
04-08-2005, 01:52 PM
JakubFromOz, crowley, Arc80 : thanks a lot... I'm working on it :D
04-08-2005, 02:07 PM
Changed her expression...
This is the whole picture, just to see how it goes with thumbnail. I'll post a more detailed pic of her face...
04-08-2005, 05:52 PM
woow this looks great! cool concept,u worked well this color scheme!!! gonna watch!!! good luck to u!!!
my MASTER & SLAVE:
04-08-2005, 05:57 PM
The change of expression definately makes her look more wild, cruel, and over-seer-ish. Rock on!
04-08-2005, 08:33 PM
This is looking fantastic! Once I saw your composition, I thought "that's perfect for mine!"..and then I cried myself to tears on my way to class. http://cgtalk.com/images/smilies/sad.gif
04-08-2005, 08:51 PM
Love the change in her expression... now she looks mad as a hatter! Brilliant!
I was wondering if you might want to carry some of that orange colour in the eyes of her minions up into her eyes or something (or her costume thingy?)... maybe to stronger suggest the connection between her and the servants (like she's controling their minds)? I dunno... maybe you don't need it... I mean, the relationship between master and servant is pretty strong already, so... (shurgs).
Can't wait to see more updates! Carry on, solider!
04-08-2005, 11:20 PM
Mad woman should always be hot. Makes us drawn to them. Then we get ****ed. Anyways... great progress snailman. Though I hope you get back to the look the Duke had in you 33 post on page 3. I feel that you're losing his facial features. Maybe he never had any really but I thought he did. Man the details you are adding look great.
04-08-2005, 11:25 PM
I was working on this... minreader...
04-08-2005, 11:54 PM
Done some tweakings... Going to sleep.
Thanks to you all for visiting my thread : Gamoron, artjunkie, teknotek83, Imriela, grafik

04-09-2005, 07:03 PM
Thanks for dropping in, goktug:)
Oooooops I made a big mistake : the Moon shouldn't be seen... The Earth is the destination !!! I must fix this.
04-09-2005, 07:18 PM
wow,luv it,looks excellent.
04-09-2005, 07:19 PM
nice, your details are coming along really good. I like that you are putting a warm light source is it. I like those glowing circles. very nice touch on those.
04-09-2005, 07:20 PM
the Moon shouldn't be seen... The Earth is the destination !
lol, i didn't even notice! :blush::D
04-09-2005, 10:59 PM
Agnes Whitehead has gone to the hairdresser before visiting Earth, eh eh...
04-09-2005, 11:09 PM
Hahaha, that's funny. It's like you gave her a wig and took it off for maintainance. The earth is looking nice and details are coming along nicely.
04-09-2005, 11:43 PM
wow, stunning work.
04-10-2005, 12:03 AM
Woah, the coloring is intense, mind blowing! Good hustle!
04-10-2005, 12:08 AM
Arc80 : my wife must also go to the hairdresser... hope she won't finish like that !!
Mordalles, beelow : thanks a lot
04-10-2005, 03:20 AM
this is looking really nice man...
let me give you a humble adivice though, when you over use rim light (that bright color that hilights the very edge of a figue /shape), specially on both sides of the figure, you end up flatenning the drawing, as the shape loses the hint that there's volume in there. It's usualy best to keep those hilightes on one side only or faded on the other side, as no real light source spreads so evenlly from behind.
maybe I'm being too techincal, or maybe this is your style (and if that's the case, it's cool & unique) but if you're going for that realist rendered look that most people seem to go for, than maybe you should consider my humble suggestion...
other than that, it looks great., and I'll keep checking this bookmark :)
04-10-2005, 04:42 AM
wow! thats pretty bizzar! but i like it! nice and original look to everything!
04-10-2005, 05:49 AM
Wow, looks good!. Great colour and lighting style!
04-10-2005, 07:04 AM
This one is singing baby! love it!!
04-10-2005, 08:30 AM
woah, this has come out pretty nice since I last saw it.
Keep it up, mate
04-10-2005, 10:01 AM
what a freaky image man! i like it a lot. the chick and creatures are awesome.
04-10-2005, 11:20 AM
i love the colours of your work(s)
new details are great, but i prefer her with long hairs
u're definitely one of my favorites. good luck!
04-10-2005, 01:53 PM
:thumbsup:Much thanks to you : spawk, prostrise, Lady Medusa, Cameron Gardner, nailuj, CodeNothing
brunowerneck : thanks a lot for your advice:wise: You're totally right about rim light.
However it tends to be realistic, I don't intend to reach a total real picture. I'd prefer some black magical light and show strange critters : that's why the chains and the rocks looks not quit real but seem made of glass. To be totally honest, I'll post a new picture in some days : it will depict the same characters, with a new point of view; but this time I'll try to make it the more realistic I'll be able to.:) There's still 38 days and this challenge is really exciting.
Oh, I must I've learned many, many tips visiting your threads.:bounce:
04-10-2005, 03:45 PM
Nice design sense : interesting piece of art. I'm curious on how you'll finish it.
I'll keep an eye on it.
04-10-2005, 04:29 PM
very good work!! lights and shadows are very good.. your characters are beautiful. But I prefer the woman in your previous WIP... GOOD LUCK
my master and servant
04-10-2005, 07:43 PM
I really like how this is coming on. A limited palate, but it's very effective.
I wonder if it would work better compositionally if the creatures at the bottom formed a curve - echoing the shapes above (they would get higher towards the edges of the canvas)...
Just a random thought... :)
04-11-2005, 12:16 AM
WHAA HA HA HA! That cracks me up... that none of us realized the earth should have been in the sky, not the moon, LOL! Where were we when they handed out smarts, eh?
The rim lighting is coming along GREAT! Oh, I have to say that I prefer her wild hair to this new haircut... the old style reflected more of her powerfully insane character, I think. *shrugs* but it's really up to you, now isn't it :D
Again, I'm super impressed with this one. Good job, mate! Proceed as planned...
I really like this one a lot! It has a great composition and feeling to it, I love the overal scale of it and the women on the chariot overlooking her henchman! Cant wait to see more and how this will turn out!
04-11-2005, 05:09 AM
Your entry is inspiring. Really outstanding work, though I agree with artjunkie that a wierder hairdo fits mad Agnes better. Something like the actress Elvira, or the bride of frankenstein, perhaps. Or make her butch. Whatever you decide will be fun to see.
Also, I saw earlier in your thread that you modeled the Duke of the Moon in ZBrush. Is any of this painted there as well. Just curious.
The slaves are equally beautiful.
04-11-2005, 05:55 AM
hey due....nice work all the best...good luck...
04-11-2005, 01:06 PM
you've got some great stuff here. i havent been here for a while. it all looks great, i see u redesigned your character, ive got no complains.. they both look great to me(one now, and the previous one). good job!!:applause:

04-11-2005, 07:04 PM
Great thanks to all of you :bounce:: Arctis, Fiolka Alexandre, Mythmaker, artjunkie, SEL, ravioli_rancher, naresh, calisto, viag
ravioli_rancher : about ZBrush, I'm newbie with this software (which I purchased at very low price !), I'll try to post some Duke paintings later.
Mythmaker : "the creatures at the bottom formed a curve - echoing the shapes above (they would get higher towards the edges of the canvas)..." I'm actually working on it.
Will send some pic this evening... My wife begins to be upset caus' I'm stuck with my computer and this challenge ... Anyway I'll try to find some time to have a look at your artworks :deal:
04-11-2005, 10:31 PM
Back to the old wild haircut
Modified foreground and refined the Duke.
Little by little it's going on...
04-11-2005, 10:31 PM
Very nice work!
There is something in your styl between Despretz and Garcia, it is cool!
Vivement la suite!
04-11-2005, 10:34 PM
WOOHOO, the hair is back. So i guess no more trips to the hair dresser huh? Nice touch on the yellow ocre colour and the very hint of a halo. WICKED!!!
04-12-2005, 01:16 AM
Nice lighting on this. It sets a great mood. I like the ring around the moon. Perhaps if it didn't go infront of the mountain tower, that might be more realistic (if it's supposed to be formed by ice crystals in the atmosphere, like a true moon ring). Sorry, I have a problem. I tend to be too literal when viewing/doing illustration.
04-12-2005, 01:44 AM
very slick! Extremely cool camera angle - it really brings the viewer into the image. Would like to see a lot more color personally and a more dynamic value range. This is going to be a really great entry.
04-12-2005, 01:46 AM
Wow man this is really taking shape, the scene is awesome, great work dude
04-12-2005, 03:54 AM
Hi Emmanuel. I haven't seen your thread till now. Great story! Very fantastic and your last update looks really good with the blue color and the earth on the backgroud. I have only one sugestion: looking at your previous post I realize that the servants look more like ones in the brown sketch than in the las post. Here they all look really angry, and it goes right with the end of your story, but I would prefer that there could be others with a more servant attitude, perhaps sad or tired. Not make them all look the same. Just a comment! Great work!
04-12-2005, 06:51 AM
Hi Emmanuel, I like your atmosphere.
When I first looked at your painting, I couldn't find where the human is (according to the rules, there should be at least one pure human). After close scrunity, I realised that the lady in black and dazzling white hair is supposed to be the human aspect of the theme. She looked more like a demi-goddess, or a creature in female form instead. So I am not sure if she is qualified as a pure human or not. What do the others think?
04-12-2005, 10:20 AM
good , u made her expression and it is looking awesome!
04-12-2005, 10:44 AM
Wow that looks awesome.
Really like the image. very very cool.
The blue lighting is really neat. gives the image such a great mood. Somehow sinister aswell
04-12-2005, 11:18 AM
Your compo really takes shape, I like the anbiance which it loosens( , colors are for many there I think, good work, of very beautiful image
Ta compo prend vraiment forme, j'aime bien l'anbiance qu'elle dégage, les couleurs y sont pour beaucoup je pense, bon travail, trés belle image
04-12-2005, 12:11 PM
04-12-2005, 12:54 PM
I've flipped the servants... let me know what you think about. Thx
little by little i think its comming together quite nicely nothing really to comment on as of yet. keep up the good work!
04-12-2005, 12:57 PM
De trés bonnes idées. L'ambiance est excellente !
La manière dont est dessinée la femme me rapelle presque un vieil artiste de Magic the Gathering.
04-12-2005, 01:11 PM
Riddick, Arc80, stevethomas, x_se7en_x, arlutik, nebezial, SigFire, MDN67, NOOB!, Olithys :
a great thank to you all !:bounce:
kaparo : about the servants, you're sure right. That's why I've changed the direction they're going to. And I've got some chains to bound them with:twisted:
jeromoo : I'll try to make her a little more human. Anyway, I haven't quite yet decided about the position of her legs, this is why she looks like a semi-goddess. Thanks for the warning.
Slav : Yes, very little by little : actually I have just an hour each day to post and work on the picture... Wife, kids, friends, work, work, eat & drink and so on... Anyway there's still about 36 days to finish... And my 3D part of this challenge is totally standing by
04-12-2005, 01:16 PM
can't wait to see this finished!!
04-12-2005, 03:50 PM

04-12-2005, 06:21 PM
You all know why I call myself "spacesnail". Sl:rolleyes:w, sl:rolleyes:w, slooooowwwwwwww

04-12-2005, 09:21 PM
oh crap. you are the KING. The perspective is great, the color choices amazing, the details just "wow... Ad the feel. Oh my my, this is going to blow us all away when done!!! *hides* XD
04-12-2005, 09:25 PM
Modified some small things, ha ha.
Things to : reshape some servants,
bind all of them with chains, retouch the ugly face of Agnes, add more and more architectural details to the Duke,... Ah yes, go to sleep a little :-p
04-12-2005, 09:36 PM
NOOB! + calisto : can't wait to finish it too, although all that is very funny
BlacKeri : thanks, by now I'm just Duke... maybe in future I would be King Ha HA.Nice to meet you.
04-12-2005, 10:31 PM
nice stuff!looking real well
Slav : Yes, very little by little : actually I have just an hour each day to post and work on the picture... Wife, kids, friends, work, work, eat & drink and so on... Anyway there's still about 36 days to finish... And my 3D part of this challenge is totally standing by
that complete bummer mate... about the 3d entry that is... well i think you can have this image done in about 20 hours... all the elements seem to be there and the only thing that is left to do with work out the base color and the details. i really hope you get both done but personally i think its a bit out of my league for time management to have 2 projects of this magnitude going.
04-13-2005, 03:35 AM
this changes make it look more dynamic now.
its coming great!
youre making a good job.
wish you good luck.
04-13-2005, 03:56 AM
great amazing drawing;
but i still wonder if, people will understand the big monster old in is hand a girl!
particularly if they don't saw the first research.
i hope you will put hight definition picture at the end, on the thread...
04-13-2005, 05:44 AM
Wow! You've gotten pretty far since the last time I checked it out. I love the feeling of scale in your piece. It feels very BIG for lack of better words. I can't wait to see how the Baron gets finished. If you just look at the background quickly, it looks like just some rocks and landscape elements. But if you take a more careful look, you see the Baron. I really dig it!
04-13-2005, 06:46 AM
holy! awesome! wow. speachless. keep it goin' freakin awesome piece here in progress. well, just subscribin' and wishhin you loadsa fun and best luck. cheers:thumbsup:
04-13-2005, 07:59 AM
i am digging the coloring. Still to me needs more detailing and color changes. It's going well. Love the white hair cool:)
04-13-2005, 01:25 PM

04-13-2005, 10:17 PM
Detailing more and more... Chains, chains, chains... Earth, Earth, Earth... ;-)
04-13-2005, 10:25 PM
No critz here. Just want to say the designs are really coming out NICELY. THat yellow ochre colour really works and blends in nicely with the cool colours. THe earth is looking really cool. Damn space invaders, hehehe. BRAVO
cheers bro :applause:
04-13-2005, 10:26 PM
i knw ur not done detailing yet, but one thng on those chains, i thnk its too defined as it fades in a dstance, jst a thought...
04-13-2005, 10:28 PM
lasting memories : thx very much
Slav : it seems that you'll be right :)
minduinho : thx and good luck to you too
choptider : I'm still a bit lazy with the girl, I find her face ugly but I have to fix it anyway
jamihn : Hey Behave ! It's a Duke not a single little baron Eh Eh Joking :D
the1st_angel : Fun is here for sure !
cheeeng : thx a lot. Compliments much aprreciated
NOOB! : Thhhhhhhhhhhhhhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaannnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk Yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooouuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu
arkinet : L'Oreal because she deserves it
Much thanks for dropping in buddies
04-13-2005, 10:30 PM
Oh just an apology : headache has come... I promise to look at all your thread tomorrow. Cross my heart.:wise:
04-14-2005, 04:18 AM
This Image is looking very promising. Keep up the good work.
04-14-2005, 07:54 AM
This is getting excellent. I love this HUGE Duke guy: he really fits in the composition, in a mysterious/threatening kind of way.
Bon courage pour la suite, c'est vraiment du beau boulot
04-14-2005, 11:10 AM
 thanks beelow and crowley
By now I'll try to work on my 3D entry.
Update of this thread within 2/3 days
04-14-2005, 11:27 AM
yeah frenchies rules!!^^
ha my god ! you're 33 years old!!
double as me^^
lol good luck man , I love your pic really great sense of the scene...
anyway the whole scene s dark blue... and the lighst defines the volume...
I think you should give the whole scene more volume by adding more lighst and shadows...
and even some second lightnings source...
04-16-2005, 06:08 PM
Thank you man for your advice..that help me a lot..:)
Your picture is going good..ambiance is great , shadows and lights too
miror character on foreground is a good idea
What do you think about my WIP?
04-16-2005, 07:15 PM
this thing keeps gettin better and better!:)
04-16-2005, 07:24 PM
nice detaisl comming :)
the clouds on the earth try to give more irregularity to clouds :)
the contrast is good but you should add some second lights to give more volume and atmosphere to it...
the hair of the mistress is a bit too ... too... "electric white? " LOL
yeah try to give it more regularity (inverse of earth lol) and even some shadings...
go luck improving final points
04-16-2005, 08:14 PM
Neozoom : quote ha my god ! you're 33 years old!!
double as me^^... Behave young padawan - When 33 years like me you'll be, 49 years I'll be ! Well it sounds like somthing stoopid. Thx for the crits; I'll be working to improve that.
About the "electric white? "; I was listening to Tesla Girl (OMD far away from the eighties)...Ouch, I'm feelin really old.
Calisto : much thanks pretty lady
Fiolka Alexandre : Thx also.
Stay tuned for more updates
04-17-2005, 02:21 PM
Started to work on Agnes' face and jewelry. Picture is 66% on actual size.
The whole project is 6000 x 3600 px.
04-17-2005, 03:01 PM
Neat armour!!! I like it a lot! Looks good! The blue you ve chosen is very nice, I also like the composition. Good luck!
04-17-2005, 03:08 PM
04-17-2005, 03:11 PM
Thanks fooxoo & NOOB!
Yesterday I saw Troy (the movie) and thought detailing the armor would be fine. i'm actually working on the servants.
04-17-2005, 03:22 PM
Dude...armor...wickedly nice. THe details are so readable. That's a lot of chains bro
BRILLIANTLY done and colours are lovely... so no critzs here again, hehe.
04-17-2005, 03:58 PM
Bonjour Emmanuel! Nice artwork, love the color work!!
My master & servent (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?t=226306)
04-17-2005, 04:03 PM
nice armor on agnes, spacesnail. im not sure how the lightning and colorscheme on the final image will be, but as for now the armor is too detailed and the shading is perhaps wrong compared to the surroundings (everything is dark and blue) perhaps youre going to detail everything like this? sort of liked this night/moonlight tone to it.
the hand that is holding the chain. not sure about the anatomy, but perhaps the wrist is too long. (for a human atleast)
anyways. nice pic so far. really much movement in it. keep it going
04-17-2005, 04:41 PM
That's some SA-WEET detailing you got goin' on there! Love how the gold armour looks as if it's emitting its own light (not quite glowing, but... ah, I dunno... it's cool) And of course that yellow really pops out nicely against all those blue tones.
Just adding a bit of an edit here... upon closer inspection I think I agree with eparts about her right arm. Seems to be a bit too long compared to the other one? *shrugs* Anyhoo...
Keep it up... this is going to be quite the masterpiece!
04-17-2005, 05:09 PM
and for ruining your anatomy, its your turn to ruin mine :) if you want, take a look at my mistress hand which is holding the staff. im pretty sure there is something wrong with it.. have been flipping it around and watching it for a long time
thank you :D
04-17-2005, 06:32 PM
Your armour look really nice! nothing to say. good job.
you should work over again the nose ,the point of light seems me too low. It's just a detail:) i know...
04-17-2005, 07:23 PM
wow, great job spacesnail. a bit bothered by the chains though - might just be me.
great detail. awright maaan, cheers.
04-17-2005, 07:42 PM
Hello, the design of the jewels and armours are sympathetic nerve and returned well, go, go for the continuation.
04-17-2005, 08:17 PM
Thanks a lot for coming gents !
Arc80 : those days, I'm very fond of chains
Samuraikuroi : thanks, may the force "bee" with you
eparts : :argh: (misc.php?do=getsmilies&wysiwyg=1&forumid=0#) , you noticed her strange arms and wrists , I must fix it. About the light : in the earlier posts, i wanted some kind of magical lights, so i don't pretend to obtain a realism. If i have enough time, i sure will add as much details as i can... And i'm coming to ruin your own anatomy...ooops, your drawing of course :surprised
artjunkie : fixin the default right now
Fiolka Alexandre : that's because she has a big nose... Noooo, i'm joking. Added to the fixing list. I've also posted some crit on your own thread.
jugeras : quote " a bit bothered by the chains though - might just be me", any crit is welcome :arteest:
Tranchefeux : thanks for dropping by, mister "DETAILMAN"
04-17-2005, 08:27 PM
One of the most iumpressive work I've seen in this challenge. Really like colors and layout of your scene.
04-17-2005, 08:31 PM
Grrr... I hate it when a piece of work is almost without flaw... :D
Try to be careful when finishing that armour as the hair on "her" left hand side is beginning to blend in and it's hard to see if she needs some slim fast or just needs a new tailor lol...
You were probably gunna sort that anyway... so I'll shurrup..
Ace work... Love the atmosphere and the concept is OreeGeenale!:applause:
your detail in the image is incredible
well composed indeed
04-17-2005, 09:38 PM
Small update about Agnes
Changed the size of her wrists, position of her right hand, nose and started to ornament her throne. About her waist... mmmmh no call from Slimfast, so I have to help her to lose some weight
04-17-2005, 09:52 PM
Bonjour Messieurs (okay, i'm still learning french. Just started actually)
Dude, you just keep updating and updating your stuff huh. You know, we still have 30 days left, hehehe. Anyway, looking good. I didn't even noticed the wrist and hand problem before, but now i see and you fixed it. Awesome. Keep the update coming.
A bientot mon ami
Hi, i'm very impressed with your entry....i think you have a good shot at winning/being in the top nine.
Would you be able to look at my thread and comment on my work, thanks!
04-17-2005, 11:21 PM
now this hand really plays the piano ;) nice you cleaned it up
and thanks for your reply about the hands. i really find it helpful
04-18-2005, 01:24 AM
nice details and i love the torus (or ring) on the left of the picture, so rond and so good looking;
and to be honest , the earth is not has good looking as the rest of the picture.
you work good!
04-18-2005, 03:04 AM
brilliant brilliant. and.. there's nothing wrong on a goddess that has some curves :D
keep on goin!
04-18-2005, 03:14 AM
Hey... Spacenail you did it again.
Nice choice of color.
Yes,the right arm is bit longer... other than that you're in great shape.
04-18-2005, 07:48 AM
So it seems all historians named Agnes are found of interdimensional travel, world domination and golden braziers.
Course, who isn't?
The detail on the Duke is flaberghastingly wonderful.
And Agnes' chariot could easily be mistaken for a snail head.
Extraordinary work. :buttrock:
04-18-2005, 10:39 AM
authentic : thanks
JimmiMak : there's still enough time to make mistakes or crash disk. Oooops it won't be !
adia : thanks a lot. I haven't found your entry
Arc80 : many updates to come. i'm thinking of adding a captured astronaut in the bottom
J2XA : sure I'll take time to look at your work
eparts : you're welcome
choptider : i've added the Earth enhancing to the so long list of thinngs to do... 30 days left would make it.
the1st_angel : :blush: (misc.php?do=getsmilies&wysiwyg=1&forumid=0#) :blush::beer: (misc.php?do=getsmilies&wysiwyg=1&forumid=0#)
cabertevon : thks also
ravioli_rancher : crap, you've perceived the subliminal message :applause:
04-18-2005, 10:52 AM
Just thought i'd mention that this is a really awesome entry so far, I love the detail!
04-18-2005, 11:11 AM
Wow.. i love the use of colors & perspective here. Cool...
04-18-2005, 01:31 PM
Very good job... Mood and composition are great, and lightning...
Just a word about the chains, they don't have enought weight, they seems to be frozen. It would be cool that they seems to be heavy in the hands and at the left of the "monster horse".
04-18-2005, 04:23 PM
Here's the astronaut.
Agnes'former fiancé, unfortunately captured by the Hookies.
04-18-2005, 04:28 PM
the_mighty_m : compliment much appreciated
RealCapri : thanks a lot
jjjazzz : crit added to the to-do list... A long long list
04-18-2005, 04:34 PM
YOu crazy fool... that's awesome dude and funny. He's a little big for the picture though and his arms are a little weird (MUAHAHAHA, i finally got at least one critzs for you). Nothing else to say here.
04-18-2005, 04:45 PM
the armour and the guy look great!:bounce:
04-18-2005, 06:13 PM
Holy moly. That's amazing. The composition, the lighting, the whole drama of the piece is stunning. I love the female figure, her pose is wonderful and the way she's framed by the moon really makes her jump out at you. The Hookies are incredibly well lit, and the textures on their clothing is amazing. I really like this... I think it will do very well in the final results.
04-18-2005, 06:36 PM
Good effect! good lights ! good shadows!! but..but but but...:) why the astronaute? I don't understand why you add him?...master and slave are there? why add this character?...you are the single master it's up to you?
04-18-2005, 06:37 PM
Well, crits first: I tend to agree with Arc80 about the size of the astronaut. Also, the ring finger on the left hand is bent in a strange way; and the right arm is a bit short compared to the upper arm.
Besides that, your work is excellent. I like the armor and the final look of Agnes face. And the coloring on the astronaut is really great. Can't wait to see it finished. Keep up the good work!
04-18-2005, 07:03 PM
Arc80 : i do my best to let you something to crit, my friend. He he. About the size of the guy, I'm working on it. By now, it's just a rough draft
calisto : thank you Milady
Zepyhri :  Your compliments are very much appreciated
Fiolka Alexandre : another character, why ? I didn't have enough detailed things to do. I'm joking... I've added him because I needed some mobile for Agnes to become mad. However it's a test picture... Don't know if I'll keep him
crowley : thanks for the crits. Since i had some problem finding the right attitude, I made a quick ZBrush model and overpainted it... that's why he looks a bit strange. Of course, I have a lot of work to improve the whole picture
04-18-2005, 07:07 PM
Wow, it's looking amazing great work on the woman
04-18-2005, 07:52 PM
This is looking reeally good. I love the detail a lot. I think the position of the astronaut's is a little off though, the one closest to aliens head. Also the woman's left arm seems to be short and small in relation to the right arm. But, this composition is strickly appealing. And like I said before I love the color. Good Hustle.
04-18-2005, 08:06 PM
Just a little rework on the astronaut...
Enough digital painting for this evening.
Got ot watch \"Raiders of the lost Ark\" with my daughter.
And coming back after the movie
04-18-2005, 08:07 PM
creepy... hehehehe... but it rocks!!!
04-18-2005, 08:13 PM
Snail - I like the astronaut, he gives a context to the Mistress Agnes. I like how it's all coming together. There's one creature head - the one on the far right by the astronaut's ankles, that seems like it's in a different scale than the others. The other creatures look sort of large, a bit bigger than a human. But as I think you originally had that one guy there back in the distance, he now just looks mini, like he's a lot smaller than the human. Now it could just be a child, i don't know... Maybe you could give it bigger eyes to make that point! :-)
Also the astronaut's right hand (screen-left) is still a little awkward... but i know you're still working on it, so I know you'll touch that area more.
Good luck and have fun watching Indy with your daughter!
04-18-2005, 08:26 PM
Hi, the evolution of your painting is cool the watches are original, I like the blows of pencil.
04-18-2005, 08:33 PM
well I suppose it is better late to subscribe that never, I am really starting to lose track of this contest :argh: ..........which is a way of saying this piece is cool and I wish I had visited sooner :D
04-18-2005, 09:48 PM
HAHAHA, thanks for at least giving me one thing to critzs. How nice of you :p I will find more  JUST KIDDING.
Anyway, enjoy your break with your daughter. THat is actually a good movie to watch. I haven't seen that in a while. You do know they are making a fourth one right.
The astronaut is looking cool. really good rendering on the space suit and nice expression.
04-18-2005, 09:49 PM
Wow, this is looking pretty sweet. Great angle and I like the detail and coloring you are putting into it. Nice work!
04-18-2005, 11:17 PM
This is looking better every time I visit! :bounce: Love the astronaut (nice detailing on the suit). Man, I gotta say... one of my favourite parts of this piece is the design of the 'hookies'... very original! Love 'em. Oh, and the rest of the piece rocks too :D
Wonderful stuff! Keep going, my man...
04-19-2005, 11:14 AM
arkinet : today, it seems there's slow rocking  many things to do at work :sad:
walrus : Tatadaa...tatadaaaa... ta tada TA... tatada TA TA (Indie's theme) - i keep the good suggestion about the Hookie-kid Thanks a lot !
Tranchefeux : thanks to the Lord of details :applause:
flyingP : absolutely right about losing track of the contest. Come as you are whenever you want Ha ha
Arc80 : Tatadaa...tatadaaaa... ta tada TA... tatada TA TA (Indie's theme) also. I wonder how the old sexy Harrison Ford will do his stunts:twisted:
fensterer : thanks you for the kind compliment
artjunkie : you're always welcome
Trying to find some time for update today, and looking at your own works

Hey spacesnail, I just love what you've done so far. No crits at this point. I'm waiting to see what you gonna add on the top-left side to balance the composition. Great stuff man!
Hello Space, man this looks great, I like the fact that you have your own style, If there is anything I can add except for great stuff, it will be that the womans face seems a bit strange with perspective in mind, or maybe I'm just seeing things.
04-20-2005, 04:14 PM
THat's a really nice EARTH you got there. Now it's time to destroy it  Destroy Earth oh mistress of the dark, hehe. LOL
Anyway, just a thought, how about showing some pieces of the space craft of the astronaut.
Can't wait till this is finish.

Your stuff are getting better and better.
Only concern from me, I would like to see little more colors. I meant some variation of main color. Just thought...
By the way, I listened to what you said because I agree with you.
The wings are expanded and better looking.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Thank you for the coment.

hmmm...comments....flattery....awh wat the heck... this looks unbelievable, your colours have a great deal of sureality...the shadowing work and the amount of characters is realy clustrophobic... yummy yummy work....btw I've been watching since you started, I'm not just a passerby...
04-21-2005, 06:20 AM
I like the illumination that you have gotten in your overall design, very translucent.
04-21-2005, 11:17 AM
taz23 : thinking of some wreck stuck into the Duke... as suggested Arc80, and i've still alot of homes and castle to paint !
0-2 : thanks a lot. About the strange perspective, there's a lot of mistakes due to the "collage" effect of the picture
Arc80 : i sent you a link to great splendid 3D analysis i'm very proud of He he
taeyoungchoi : thanks for dropping in. Whereas i don't post a lot, i keep an eye on your work

ian081271 : i just wonder if it's not too pale... i just can't get the right color and contrast on each monitor i try
