Latest Update: Final Image: Final image! Its been fun all! See you soon!
http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/8/5823/5823_1116497899_medium.jpg (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/8/5823/5823_1116497899_large.jpg)

The land of Purgatory is one left to myth. It is said to be a vile place where heaven and hell keep a balance between one another. The forces of good and evil are left at bay. The temptress of this land of the undead, judges those brought to her from the afterlife. These once mortals stay rested, standing in silence awaiting a fate they have no control over. Their bodies lay peril and lifeless in form as the spirit tries to find a way to free itself from this torment. Those that grieve and pray eventually rise to the light above as doves. The temptress is the key to this balance in this unknown world. She is but a breathe away from heaven and a screech away from hell. Her spirit is like a pendulum, swaying from side to side trying to find an order and a peace between all that is living and all that is dead.

The hands of the Gods above cling to her and speak to her as do the devils below that grip her soul to an eternal damnation. She does not feel, but understands what role she was given. It leaves her this burden to judge those that sin and give them a second chance at redemption and damn those to hell for their choices in life. We are all masters and servants in our own right as humans. This land of Purgatory draws a picture of the balance of all, and foresees a challenge that we all judge and will be judged at the end. This land is not to far from how we live our lives today; we only see a pretty picture and forget to look closer at what is really happening to us all. A connection between Heaven and Hell is left with the in-between, “Purgatory is the last judgement”.

This is a little mock up of the drawing telling a story. I just want to sincerely thank everyone for their support and help with the challenge. Everyones hard work really paid off and you can see this with all the fantastic entries submited. Its an inspiration and an honor to be a part of all this and watch it all unfold. There is so much talent here, its unbelievable. With the humblest of gratitudes, I wish you all luck and look forward to meeting you all again in future CGTALK challenges.

Its been fun!!

NEW IDEA A COUPLE POSTS BELOW! This idea helped spawn my new idea, just a reminder!!

Idea of the scene (story):

“The temptress of mankind”

My ideas settings will be in a little place we call Purgatory. The middle grounds between
Heaven and hell. The place where the devil wants you but the forces of god protect you. The place where sinners lay in a tortured base land of nothing awaiting their trials before
being judged to either and eternal damnation or forgiveness and a returning.

The story will be about a damned angel left to rot in this peril land without borders. She
will be the gatekeeper of Purgatory that for sees all. She is neither good nor evil and carries a great pain inside her that makes her weep, this pain allows her to feel sorrow and grief which will accompany her throughout eternity. This Purgatory that she is in charge of, creates the balance between that which is good and that which is evil. Those that get forsaken after death to this vile land become her slaves and must please her every wish. Those that do not, stay with her until a reckoning occurs.

It is said that if you pray for those that have passed on, it will help guide them to an eternal bliss in heaven, and help those leave this Purgatory land. What I will try to depict is it will take more then prayer for these lost souls to find the way.

The scene will show this fallen angel with broken wings rise, but I will try to show it so that it looks like she is being lifted by those that stay in this land of Purgatory. There is a scene depicted by Dali in which a watch hangs in the balance overseeing a barren desert wasteland. I will have hints of this lost and desolate place in the background. Those that are lifting her in the scene do as she says so they may be saved. They touch her and ask for redemption calling out to her. I will show someone she grants forgiveness to an ascension to heaven with the clouds opening up above. In the background I will show lost souls walking the land. I may distort the image a little (abstract) for background so you may see this all. That means to all of you that perspective will not be an issue here. Though the ideas of perspective and how the eyes move will be greatly used and will help influence the piece to get the best effect desired. I will use a palette of something in the early pre renaissance period. The depiction will be as life like as possible.

I will do my best to take you through the steps of this project, most likely it may go to pencil first and then be scanned. A concept sketch is in the woks!

Here is the color concept sketch of what I will be going by. I plan on having more absract figures and angles towards the end. I will try to make it as realistic as possible by the end of this challenge. For the line art I will do it in pencil and use this as a guide to work from.

Ive decided to go another direction with this challenge, I really wanted to do something villainus and not as much beauty. I will write up my story on my next update along with the new concept sketch of the scene. This is one of the gremlin type "slave" characters that will be depicted in the final scene. More to come!

Master and Servant

The Idea:

The theme Master and Servant allows artists the freedom to create anything they want along the lines of a king verse pheasant premise. The broad subject has driven many different and creative ideas through my mind; so many that I am compelled to want to do them all. Thus, I needed to find a subject matter that would appeal to me first as I will be the one sitting here for countless hours creating this and the other, something that would appeal to those in this competition and if luck is on my side something that the judges would find interesting and driven by story through art. I figured the greatest master and servant was one that had GOOD vs. EVIL characteristics. Going along the lines of my first idea of Purgatory, a depiction between Heaven – Purgatory (Middle Grounds) – and Hell will be shown. Rich characters and an immense amount of detail will follow. There will be a relationship of balance between Good vs. Evil that will be staged in Purgatory. Accompanying this setting will be a character rich in form and beauty. I think of Aphrodite when perfection of the female form comes up in Asian form, though the character would need to be influenced by the devil to show a balance. Angels would follow this creature as well as servants of the damned. She would be the temptress of this vile Purgatory land. She would judge those sent to her. A relationship showing Gods grasp on her as well as the devils will be made clear. Everyone and everything in the scene will have a relationship of master and servant where even those that do the judging and have the control in the end still bare consequence to a higher power.

What I will try to show:

In the scene I will show this Rouge angel/Master as the main subject in the composition. I will show mini goblin type creatures as followers of hers. I will also depict angels holding her and praying and accompanying her where she moves. The setting will be inside a never-ending dungeon where evil holds the low ground and heaven oversees the high ground. This land will show people as the ones being judged at the end. They’re bodies will stand peril and confused awaiting their trial. The scene will show examples of those that are judged and left to wait another assessment by her. It will also show risings of those that have been granted permission to enter above. I will create the piece along the lines of depicting how things may really look and be if this existed. I will not hold back due to censorship though I will still keep it tasteful and not use things I feel would create discussion. I will use my style of art and try to keep it as realistic as possible. I will show hints of HR Giger in my piece as well as exaggerated forms of the human body. A renaissance feel with the clouds above will accompany the setting. When finished, this should be very detailed and rich with color. I will show the whole progression from start to finish and try to give an update, every other day even if minimal to show progress. I will answer questions and challenge my own abilities throughout this entire competition. Thanks for reading all this and good luck to you all!

i think this is great where this is heading. u have quite a talent off the computer too. lol but thats neither here nor there, what i did want to ask is u did have to include a human as either master or servant, did u not? and the only real human form is this fallen angel, but is a fallen angel exceptable? that is my only quiery. cant wait to see that palette aplied, very tasteful choice.

WOW! Monsters. I like stuff like that. Like your concepts, monster design, biomechanicslike style. From the start ( I am Terrible Sorry) I had strong fealing that you overplayed DOOM3 recently. Then I read all the rest and changed my mind. It's OK. I could say, that I disagry with some moments of the story, but I'm afraid I don't have anought vocabulary to explain. Religion is something i'm pretty confident at. So see ya later.

Keep it up!

Zephyri
03-31-2005, 06:03 PM
Wow, this is right up my alley. Your concept sketches are great quality, and the combination of beauty and hellish beasts is such a good one. I like the way all the monstrous beings frame the woman, and seem to be tending to her. Reminds me of a much more hellish version of that scene where the forest animals help to dress sleeping beauty and her prince up in the forest in the disney version. But I much much much prefer this. Can't wait to see how this progresses so I'll be subscribing!

SEL
03-31-2005, 11:56 PM
tilite- thanks a bunch! cant wait to do color, as far as the questions regarding a human, if you see in the initial concept sketch there will be many human beings standing aimlessly in the background waiting to get judged. The main character as well has humanlike characteristics. It hard to classify human especially when you create a place called Purgatory where obviously no one has been, so we are left with our imaginations to tell a story. Hope that explains it better.

suk-grigorij- hey there glad you like! Yes religion is a touchy subject for everyone, and everyone has their own faith. Religion is only a part of this picture. Its the ideas behind the piece that im going to try to convey. Obviously what I wrote as far as story may make no sense as far as some religions are concerned. I am a catholic and to even talk about such nonsense would get me in trouble yet that is not the point. Its a story and not real obviously, fiction to say the least of my imagination towards master and servant! thanks for your response..

Zepyhri- hey thanks! I remember that scene. Great movie! though Lord of the Rings and Giger were both going through my head when drawing this. Ill keep my updates coming as im working on it right now, maybe late tonight or early tommarow with another update?

More to come folks!

Here is where a couple hours of my day went into. I started on the detailing of the top right as well as some of the characters, im starting to flesh out the scene and started to clean up the sketch a little. Obviously this is done in pencil and will be scanned in and digital remade. I hope to get to that section soon, lots more detail to this piece! Thankyou all very much!! It is much appreciated and really kicks me in the butt to want to keep working at this and post a new updates! Heres a couple answers to some of your questions, ill be sure to drop in on some of your guys works as well to see how you all are doing!

I know this is gonna come up more then a couple times during this challenge as not everyone is going to read every post so Ill repeat it again. I draw off inspiration, and for purgatory two type of inspiration keeps going through my mind with this challenge one is Lord of the Rings and the other is the art by Giger. The movie aliens has also flew through my mind and thus, what you are starting to see are reminenses of those thoughts and pictures my brains sees. The scene in the movie aliens where people are stuck in the walls and slime oozing and flesh rotting is the approach I like best, and yes I know GIger was the art director for that. Needless to say, everything I create will be completelly original in my own style and own ideas. We all as artists learn and grow through inspiration as some people enjoy art from Adam hughes or Sorayama or Brom or the great from the past. By the end of this challenge, Ide love to have people see it for what it is, art through SEL.

I hope to update either tonight or in the morning! Thanks for all the kind comments folks! More to come!

i think this is comming along great. is that a mohawk on the lil dudes head. i cant imagine creatures being to clean down there. how about scars, burn marks, dirt/mud patches, warts and skin imperfections and my favorite randomly place scragly hair, u know the type that oozes with sweet and accumulates puss. lol

Very nice indeed. I'm really liking those dudes in the foreground. Only thing I would say at this point: I like how there is symmetry with variety around the edges... It has the same visual weight, but it's not redundant. I just wish there was a little more of that in your central figure. Does that make sense? (ie...one leg forward...maybe her head tilted down and--just slightly--to one side, as if she's looking at one of the foreground figures)... Yeah. Maybe not those specifically, but something to break up the monotony from one side of her to the other.

Anyway, looking sweet!

wow... let me crank my jaw back up! This is stunning! Very Giger-esque, though if you use that colour pallette that will make it very much non-giger and completely your own style. I just love the amount of detail you've put into this, I can't wait to see it coloured. I think Mr Frederickson has a valid point about her symmetry, but the image is amazing as it stands. In fact, the symmetry gives it an almost tarot card feel, which I rather like.

R Frederickson- Hi there and thankyou very much for your feedback! That was one of the things I plotted out early as far as what I wanted for the overal compostion. I need her as the center of attention, thus I want the viewer to look into her eyes and her look back into yours. I tried verying her pose early on, but it just made her part of everything else whereas now she stands alone and is the center piece. What I was going to do to balance what you said though, earlier stated in the concept sketch is have 2 angels surrounding her that I will do in Photoshop both having different perspectives and angles. That will mix things up a little as they will look as if they are a part of her which they are, yet she will still say the same. I hope to express this more clearly once I start to draw. That you for bringing that up though as it will help in the final pieace.

Virtuoso -Thanks Michael!! Really appreciate the comments, keeps me motivated!

Zepyhri- thankyou! Those are very nice comments! I hope the pallete I chose does the pieace justice. That is all im worrying about at the moment, my color scheme.!

ALright everyone, next update will be my final pencil Line Art! Keep posted for it as Im working on it as we speak!

Hey everyone, sorry for the lack of dely for posting this image. Fell asleep the night I was going to and been really busy until now. So here it is. Final Line Art of the compostion. There are some things that need to get touched up, but nothing I cant handle. Dont worry about the background plate as that is there mainly for reference and perspective as to when I start in the coloring faze. I will go through my processes of color when I begin. I cant wait to throw some color onto this finally. This is gonna be a pain to color since there is so much detail. Ill go inch by inch until its done. Thanks a lot all for the support, more to come!

Hi all, what ive been working on is the masking of the piece. I figured since this is a challenge as well as a learning process for some, I would post how im going to go about doing my coloring. What I have with the art are 3 layers. A foreground, mid ground, and background. Each with its own layer, I do this so I dont effect the others detail and color scheme incase I need to change or move something later on. Also I ned this done because the flowing dress will be another layer too and be partly transparent where you will see the background through it. Also I will have 2 angels in the scene as well, so both of those will have their own layer too! Everything got moved and extended to fit the dimentions of the required book size, I currerntly am filling in those gaps and redueing some proportion with the background. The start of my color scheme will come next! More to come!

The perspective behind the lady doesn't look wery well. Why the walls are sloping? And the windows' archs are not correct. Just draw the rectangle in which the arch is inscribed and you'll see the curve correctly.
I like this demon party very much:buttrock:

Morgy -Great observation morgy! That is actually being worked on as we speak, because I extended everything and moved things around, the old background just didnt fit as well as I liked. Im actually reduing it in photoshop in black and white and blocking in the correct shapes and perspective so it fits better, detail will come after ofcourse, I will post my new update tommarrow sometime! i wanna know about the background... being from an architectural background im inruiged to know what typw of details u will put on the structure in the background... and also what condiion it will be in... i mean its not excatcly water crackers, tea and silk down there!

SEL
04-11-2005, 07:53 PM
tilite- Hi tilite, the background will consist of 2 layers of floors, the bottom layer will show hints of the demonic sidepaneling ive already done wheras the top floor will be more renaisance like and marbleish! I guess in a way showing the different levels, the higher up to heaven, the nicer it is, the lower to hell, the more evil it is. I will try my best to portray this going along the same lines as the pencil background I had before. I will provide an update of the background and perspective and show a complete bg soonafter with most of the layers drawn in. I will go to color from there. This is a little more timelly approach to this drawing, but I want everything to fit and look and feel as asthetically nice and apealing to the eye.

Hi all!

Because tilte asked, Ill provide an insight into the world of coloring over pencil. Im currently in production of doing a 3 issue comicbook, so I learned a lot of cleaver techniques that I go by when I color over pencil. I will explain in more depth in a mini tutorial as to how I go about this. Though there are many ways to do this, I will explain in more depth how I do it and reasons why. Stay tuned for that as it will take me a couple days to prepare, we'll see how I feel tommarrow?!? Here is the latest of Coloring WIPS with my pieace. I put a side by side so you can see the detail better and get a better feel of the color. Im taking a different approach on this one by not throwing color all over the page. I already have a pre conceived notion as to how this will look when finished. There is a lot of layering and flattening involved as you will eventually see. Example would be to paint the veins of the body underneith the skin and place that as its own layer. Have the top layer as a grdient of skin color with a hint of transparency to see the veins below. I use that simple method to be able to see the pencil below. Eventually with enough layering and flattening, you will see great results, also you will need to make some cleanups with the smudge tool on the pencil to get rid of the pixeling and to get the smooth feel though you dont want to completelly smooth it out otherwise it looks like plastic, its good to keep texture! Ill explain my methology on another post! More to come!

A tutorial would be so much help! I'll keep my eyes peeled for it. Though even snippets as you've put here are helpful. Zepyhri - thankyou very much, that is one of the hardest things to avoid when doing color is the plastic like effect. Ill try not to go that route, tut coming shortly!

element5 - Got you covered, the lower pillars are all going to be very gigeresque, it will be along the lines of the walls to the left and right, whereas the upper walls will be more renassaince marble like. (clean) Thanks!

walrus - thanks tons! Ill get on that tut!

Jezzarts - there should be by the end, Ill do my best to portray what you said, I should probably do my research as to the lighting you said and find a good reference to help with my lighting towards the end of this comp!

For the Pencil Coloring Tutorial ill put together for you guys, is there a specific body part you would like me to concentrate on, I wont obviously have time to do a whole character. Hi Sel,
I like the HR. Giger approach you're taking and I absolutely love the metaphorical meaning of the scene you're depicting.
One small suggestion though; you might want to add a choir of angels in the clouds where heaven is just to make it more obvious its heaven. Maybe some herald angels blowing trumpets. Other then that it coming along great!:applause:

The pic is developing very well! but I have a suggestion.. A pic seems quite flat now.. I have some troubles to read the depth, whats in front and whats in the back. So I suggest u to add some cooler colors in the background, some blue hue to put the characters with warmer colors mor in front. With that u'll also make a nice color contrast on the pic and make it more attractive.. my opinion :)

pejot - thanks a bunch man! Much appreciated!@

calisto - thanks, I tried to make it asian influenced yet, still keeping the possability she could be something else.

NinjaASSN - I appreciate this critique tremendously. This is something Ive been uring to hear as I felt the same way. I will go into it and do what you said to see If I can get the foreground and background show a little more separation, I may add a hue blue fog at the bottom that may help all this thanks much!

More to come al! Thanks for all the C&C!~

Here is the Red version of the Main character. Basically I cannot go on and fine toon details etc. until I make up my mind on which one to go with. Im really at a stand still at the moment because of this. Ninja Assassains comments to add a blue hue helped a ton. I just need a second opinion as far as which color to go with for main character so I can get this done. I look forward to your opinions as it will dictake which road I go, please give me reasons why I should go a certain route and maybe if you have any ideas also! thanks a lot! I Look fortward to your feedback!

the idea is good and the story as well, i think that you need to tie up the piece, to find the balance between the background and the foreground elements either by use of colour or light and shadows...keep on my friend and good luck

agios - thanks man! thats probably what I should be doing. Ill finish a couple things and then start flattening things and finishing their detail, highlights and shadows.

I guess since no one said anything about which color to go with, I made an executive decission by looking and thinking about it the last day or so and will be going with the blue hued main character. Ill make her more lifeless and decayed by the end. More to come shortly folks!

Absolutely beautiful work, Sel, this is looking utterly amazing. And I love the method by which you work, leaving your pencil work to create texture. And I definitely think you made the right decision to go with the blue version of the character, she fits into the overall composition better and helps the transition between the two extremes to flow. Amazing work.

Very beautifull close up shaun! like it a lot! since you still play around with colorschemes, my eye tells me a desaturated green/blue/cyan could work on the sky to let the decent and beautifull red/yellow tones of your forground more effect. Great wok on all those details. Keep it up Shaun!

the1st_angel - hey thanks much! Ill try your suggestion on the sky and see how it fits. I was having a problem with it earlier as the top of the building were bluish and sort of felt they did not separate eachother too well. Its still a WIP so a lot still needs to be changed. Great suggestion though!

Arc80 - thanks man! I guess drooling wouldnt be out of the question, yet with horns like hers, she kinda gets intimidating. Shes still gonna get more evil with many veins pooping out thoughout her arms etc.

How about nipple piercings? That might be too over the top for the scene im depicting though, I may even cover her front with a see through clothe loine. We''ll see, not much time left.

Hi Sel. Wow, you have really moved along on this piece. You have such a suttle way of painting, very cool. I read your plot, it seems sad in a way. You can't help but feel sorry for the gal. :hmm:
Hey, thanks for dropping by my post and giving me all those great tips. Will fix em. You know, my best friend (and many artist), usually turn their image around onto a mirror to check for errors. Should have done something similar in Photoshop.
About the image, as I already pointed out, love the soft style in which you paint. I personaly like the clouds the way they look. To me, if you try adding another color i.e. blue, 'I' feel it will take away that 'classic' painted style that you have going on. If you add color, think it would make it look too main stream. Yes, blue as we are trained, normally pushes things back, but I think in this case, it would too fight for attention (too much attention). One grip, is it me, or does there seem to be a little extra room between the top of her breast (right below the collar), and the top of the shoulders?? Other than that, love the Dali like appearance of the image. Nice job separating the image into three parts (very cool way of summoning up your story). Ok, again, many, many thanks for dropping in on me.

This is a big update even though it looks minimal. I spent all day working on this so I can finish before the end. I added the angels. Worked on one and then duplicated it to the other side, they will be twins but Ill work on changing expression next update. I started adding effects and worked on background a great deal! Some color changes and much detail everywhere. Hard to see though in a smaller res image, but when the final is submitted, you will have a better closeup of all the detail that is going into this piece. I also added a glowing castle in the heavenly area which was pretty detailed, but got shrunch about a thousand times, which you now cant see anything which sucks but what can you do.

Anyhow, I have all day tommarrow to work and finish this thing. I plan on adding the people in this purgatory land in the background. One of which will be on fire another, half eaten, other standing in humility. The ones in the mid tower may be praying or looking up. If I have time Ill have angels floating to the heavens. I need to do tons more highlights as well as work on the textures of the creatures more. More effects will be added near the end. I figure Ill wake up early and spend the day to get all that is needed done.

I hope you are understanding the story better now that I wrote in the front. Im doing my best to try to show a balance between heaven and hell through this middle ground called purgatory. The main character acts like a pendulum holding it all together, everything influencing eachother, where master and servent is expressed through all.

More to come everyone! ENJOY the UPDATE!
