Here it is, the finished thing. Like many people i'm sick to death of staring at this thing now and, although there's loads more I would have love to have done differently/better this is where it ends. For that at least I am very happy :)
I've enjoyed this competition immensely but now it's time to go and drink beer and talk to real women - if I can rememeber how...

Yeah, I am very excited about this theme, as you say characters are definately where my passion for 3d is focused. It's great to be sitting here at work and playing with ideas in my mind although I have no firm concept of where i'm going to head with this yet.

Well after my first sleepless night of dreaming up ideas for this challenge I think i've decided what direction to take.
At first I was going along the lines of drunken guys in a bar - servants to alcohol and all that - but I just couldn't visualise an exciting enough composition. As I like the idea of modelling a really attractive female I focused my thoughts around that :) and came up with the following idea that for now I will entitle: 2 Masters, 3billion (willing) servants.
The idea is to create a very attractive woman with fantastically huge breasts and pose her in a bar or some similar scenario and have three or four awe struck males trying their absolute hardest to woo her. These lust struck romeos will be buying her drinks, bringing her gifts and maybe even fighting over her in the background.
Although it probably seems a hugely sexist subject, I want the guys to look like fools and the woman to be very much in control, if not bored with the situation. I'm basically exploring the dumb fascination that men have with breasts and the subsequent, uniquely feminine ability to use their assets to turn otherwise level headed fellows into hypnotised, drooling servants.
The image will be somewhat stylised; the males especially will be highly characatured, although I like to use realistic textures and lighting. I imagine the final thning to not be too far removed from those old, saucy seaside postcards you used to see.

I thought it'd probably be worth my time mcking up the scene using primitive shapes. This way I have a good idea of exactly what I need to build, see if they'll be any unforseen problems and start thinking about the composition from and early stage - as opposed to three seconds before the cometition ends for once :)

The start of the female body. She won't be naked in the finished image so i've put less effort into her mid section than I have for the feet for example which will be relatively close in the final image.

I think the thigh area should either be thinner or the calf be made abit bigger now they seem like they dont belong to eachother. Very nice detailing on the foots!

Great concept. Like it a lot. It´s so true, we really are little servants in these situations....and in a lot others btw...:)
The model looks fine so far. I have to say, that I dont find her body attractive. Dont know what it is. Probably just personal taste. No big issue here. But you sure made some big advantages...:bounce:
I would work a little more on her attitude. I dont think she looks bored in your scene concept. I want her to do something active, to look like she couldn´t care less about those men. Reading a book maybe, even though it would be a strange thing to do in this inviroment. Just doing something, totally without taking notice to the guys standing around her. Hope it makes sense.
And finally, I want to wish you good luck with this. You sure are in you field with this challenge...

I see your point about her attitude in the picture. My original idea was to have her bored and disinterested. However, although attractive women must hate it when guys continually letch over them, i'm sure that on some level they are enjoying the attention.
So what I need is apparently bored but secretly loving it... tough one.

H3rbie - Cheers for your comments, I want to go for something a little more characatured so expect to see those curves getting even bigger by the time i've finished, but yeah, you're right they need to match whatever happens.

Yeah, I am in on this too...not in 3D though, trying out my drawing skills this time.
Tough one, being bored and exited at the same time....really cant give you any advice on that, it sounds to me as being very complicated....but interesting. To give you an idea, still using the book(I know the book isnt a good idea, its just to give you an example of these two emotions working together): She´s reading the book, having a little smile on her mouth...maybe not starring at the pages very focused...I dont know, just to get you started...
With your character addiction, you really should give zbrush a try....(im paid by pixologic to say that:))...I was stunned by the angler movie on their webpage.
EDIT: Btw, you female character is very attractive from behind....just wanted to say, that this view on her, changes my overall view...nice...:)

Muffin1 - We have gone down similar paths here haven't we. I always used to start with the head myself but I tend to dwell on them when really i should be moving on to other stuff. As this deadline is a bit shorter than previous challenges i'm trying to make sure i get everything done that I can - hence body first, head last.
Kragh - I do like the book idea. I think you are right suggesting that the expression and emotion of the woman will make or break this image. It needs to be just right. I like the 'looking at a book but not reading it' idea as it will allow me to express the type of emotion I have in mind. Plus, it might make her look more intellectual and subsequently give her a more subtle level of attractiveness than the in your face pixel porn we're used to.
Hmmm, you've definately given me food for thought...
As for ZBrush, you're right I probably should use it more. I've got a copy and have had a go but found the interface so frustrating I gave up. I've seen what some people have done for this challenge and it's truely amazing that they're knocking out top quality stuff in no time atall. It's worth mastering I guess if just to keep up with the competition.

Hey, the body is looking like its coming along just nicely. Haha, I know what you mean about Zbrush. I just recently began using it myself. After a while you get more and more used to the interface and eventually you start to like it alot. I recommend that you look some at the Practical Manual.pdf and look in the index to find what you want to be able to do. Since, it is that which is important right now. You can always go back and learn the application step by step once your not in a competition. As for me, I wanted to know how to sculp and how to paint my mesh which I imported from max. And once I understood the workflow basics, it started to show off results which kept getting better as I progressed with the application and reading only tiny bits from the practican guide and generall exploring on my own.

Hey I like your way of finking. Sometimes weamen make everything the wnat with us just because...(put here all the stuff about breasts). The have that strange kind of power over most men just from the moment they are born. Damn! Guys, we supposed to do something about that. (NO offence? Ladys. We're helpless anyway).
So use your image to make us all (men) to fill a shame for our slave-like behavior.

Like the feet a lot, specially the toes has a very organic, realistic shape. On the left(our left) foot I have a feeling, that it might be a littel flat in profile(both feet might, I´m sure its a mirror, just only noticing on the left) giving the foot an ultra slim appearence. It might just be due to the angle and possing of the foot...
Glad you can use my input, makes it a lot more fun to follow you progress:)...and yeah, heading for intellectual appearence could give the picture an extra dimension...so it´s 4D:D
Having a lot of trouble myself, really uninspired at the moment. That´s how it is, sometimes it just makes itself, other times you have to put a lot of decipline into the workflow...

So, after a weekend of extreme sleep deprivation I've added the head and hands and the character is 90% done. I've also given more detial to the neck, breasts and torso There's still tweaking to be done, although my focus will now be on clothing her and giving her some hair... on her head that is :)

Here's a close-up of the female character. There's still some tweaking to be done to the shape of the head and the ears a bit rubbish but will probably be covered with hair.

Looks great so far, except the breasts are way too big in my opinion, it'd look better with more realistic proportions. Also the line coming down between the clavical/ upper pecs look a bit sharp...

PBlades - I know what you mean about the breasts being massive but that's the whole idea behind the final image - her jubblys are the masters and the drooling fools around her are the servants. As long as the modeling is sound, it all comes down to personal preference. I guess it's pretty obvious what mine is... :)
P.S. I totally agree with the pectoral definition thing. Will fix.

Hey David, the modeling is coming along really well! While skimming through all the 3d entries i saw your post and the sole reason i clicked on your thread was to tell you to tone down the breasts, but after looking at your concept I think they are a good size. Perhaps model them closer together and pushed up kind of like this:
I don't know if that was the sort of outfit you had planned, but I think it would lend itself well to your model. Looking great so far, can't wait to see this compelted!

I've started to model the clothes onto her. I'm happy with the shoes but the skirt needs work.
A colleague of mine just suggested I lose the skirt and pose her as a stripper/lap dancer in a night club and have all the guys falling around her despertate to stick money in her g-string. I like this idea quite a lot and it would save me modeling clothes on her - which is good for several reasons :)
What does everyone else think of this idea?

I saw the thumbnail of the back of the legs in the gallery and immediately knew your concept without clicking - great idea. I thought the breasts looked a little too much but in the colour render they don't seem so excessive now. The shot of the back of the legs is quite a sexy one, gonna keep an eye on this.

Modelling the straps for these shoes was a real pain and definately something that i'm glad to have gotten out of the way. I'm quite pleased with how they've turned out - an extra bevel on the edges gives them better shape and makes them look more strap like.

It's great to read what you guys would like to see in your dream woman! Sadly I can't cater for everyones tastes but nevertheless it's good to get a feel of what the average ideal is. Plenty of people have suggested smaller breasts but hey, what can I say, i'm a breast man! Come to think of it, maybe i'll make them bigger... :)
Versiden - Nice idea about the long dress, at the moment i'm really not sure what she'll be wearing. I've got so much else to model and so little spare time that she might just end up naked! Which would probably be no bad thing!
Kragh - yeah, i'm not too sur eaboutt he stripper thing either. On one hand it means less work (and things are getting tight already) but on the other I think the image will be losing a lot of it's subtleness. Tough one, I guess time will tell on this one...

I'm actually having major thoughts about a big shift in concept. I'm well aware of how time is short out and like the idea of keeping the girl with as little clothing on a possible so I'm leaning towards the idea of using the girl as a pole dancer...
I envisage a scene where she is draped seductively round a pole in a nightclub with all the guys waving money at her. They are slaves to her beauty, she's a servant to the big bucks she's earning.
I can light it in a way that means less modeling of other characters giving me the time I need to make the female as good as poss. I was initially planning a stylised approach to the characters but the modeling of the female went better than I planned so now I think i'll concentrate on her and go all out for photorealism.
Hopefully i'm making the right decision...

nice. tex is beautiful but isn't there too much specular? also these highlights could use some soft noise cause they aren't too natural as for now.

Cheers for all the great comments guys. To answer a few of the points/questions raised:
Versiden: The skin is nothing very special - It's a standard max material with the usual diffuse, specular and bump maps in their relevant places. The trick is more in the lighting. I'm using Brazil's Skylight for my ambient and a couple of omni's to pick out the highlights. That's it really. other than a tweak of the levels in photoshop. I'll post my textures in a minute so you can see them and tomorrow i'll post a series of progressive renders so you can see exactly how it works.
Gianluca: Ciao. It's all texture mapping. I was thinking about using a proceeduaral base to avoid some of the seams but decided against it. If you look carefully at where her arms meet her body you can see the seams that I have yet to blend in...
Grooshka: She is quite shiny but that's because I want her to look oiled up. I've knocked the shine back on her face as that never looks good. Some noise of the highlights is a good point, ill look into that. Cheers man.

Fantastic model. Great proportions. The texture is good and I know it is still in the works, but to me she kinda looks like she just had a full body chemical peel so she looks like she has a bit of a burn all over her body. Mostly in the neck area. But it is all still awesome work keep it up.

I like the texture. But I don't know about shaders you are planing to do. You it is very dependent on the scene as whole, so it's hard to judge for me. I just too often see good works spoiled with "oiled skin". Well, if you are "'pro" it's not a problem, but if you are not... So maybe it's better to think twice.

HolyJoe: I think I know what you mean. I need to balance out the diffuse color as it's still showing lots of shadow and highlights from the original photographs, pariticularly giving her a dark neck. Should be fixed soon.
suk-grigorij: She is quite shiney but then she is an exotic dancer so I think she should be. I guess it's a case making the highlights work correctly - a challenge in itself :)

I've spent an evening tweaking all the features of her face. She is a huge improvement on the previous one, which is why I never posted a close up of it before :) Probably still go a bit of tweaking to do to refine her beauty but generally she's coming on well.

Great texture work David. Although the makeup seems a bit dark...have you done test with some slightly lighter colors?? It'd be a shame to lose such nice modeling details (now the area looks a bit flat because no light is defineing it)

Versiden: The skin is nothing very special - It's a standard max material with the usual diffuse, specular and bump maps in their relevant places. The trick is more in the lighting. I'm using Brazil's Skylight for my ambient and a couple of omni's to pick out the highlights. That's it really. other than a tweak of the levels in photoshop. I'll post my textures in a minute so you can see them and tomorrow i'll post a series of progressive renders so you can see exactly how it works.
you've made it work really well. hoping to see more, face is looking good. I would increase the highlights on the lips

Whew, this was a mission. I really hate skinning characters more than anything else in 3d. It's always worthwhile though, I guess.
I wasn't too sure about hanging the head backwards at first as I've put so much effort into the face. However it just seems to work so well with the rest of the pose and the form in general that I think i'll be leaving it as it is.
A bold, discerning maneuver or a shameful waste of time and effort? You tell me... :)

Kryhoo - Yep the hair is rubbish I agree, however it's kind of place holderish until I can get round to doing something decent. Now she's throwing her head back it's less of an issue although I still want to get something in there.
3dRaven - It is quite dark makeup but it's all part of my cunning plan to avoid having to add too much detial - such as eyelashes. Although, once again with the new pose it's all academic anyway. Thanks for your input.
J++Dragon - Hmm, you're probably right about the hue/saturation. I've tweaked it on the recent render, what do you reckon?
Versiden - I agree it's a shame to hide the face but the pose just fits. Maybe i'll do like Dimitris suggests and stick another character in there somewhere. Antoher idea is to put some mirrors in around her, that way you'll get to see a lot more of my hard graft...
Dimitris - I thought about the tension in her right hand as that is where she's be supporting a lot of her weight but then I thought nah, I like it in that pose and getting a hand to clench tightly is always a head ache. I'll go back and look at this if I find I have time. Cheers for pointing it out though. Also I like the idea of another dancer in the scene, maybe in the background, i'll definately look into that.
Banzato - Good call! That knee is way out, hadn't spotted that before you mentioned it. The system works! :)

I've played about a bit with some different colours for the shoes and underwear - liking the pink. Plus I like the contrast of the skin against the blue background even if it is temporary until I can work out what's going on back there...

Swamps, You have a great modelling skill! I particulary love the belly! About the breast, its all about taste ;) The skining is great! Just 2 things looks strange to me: 1) the knee - For me it seems he broke it. 2) the left hand - Dont know why, but (for me again) it apears as she is not holding the pipe. meybe turn it a little more and close (just a little) the fingers.

oh yeah! nice pose swamps. everything is superb except her left leg and especially the calf. it should be streched on sides lightly because of great flexion. also the knee could be more accented. last problem is thigh: it's too thick near the knee (where it should be more slim). I think you could fix these in no time. hope any of this helps, because I like this thread very much.

rynomyte - I had thoughts of using mirrors in the background and I tried a few experiments but found that unless the mirrors were very close to her it was hard to get a decent composition as her reflection will always be twice as far away from her as the mirror is... I've come up with a new composition that i've just mocked up and will post shortly. There's going to be a bar and some excited male onlookers in the background. I reckon that'll will work better. Cheers for the suggestion.
Martinez3d - Someone else noticed the knee, i've just about fixed it and will post a new version soon. As for the hand I agree but am loath to change it as it looks quite nice at a purely modeling level, and getting her to hold it tightly will be quite tricky, i'll look into it. Thanks for pointing those out.
grooskka - hey man, I see your point on the calf, as it is that pose is just how character studio skinned her first time out - which isn't too bad really. I see your point though, I need to go in and adjust that bit manually. Also will try the thigh a bit slimmer and now I look at it the top of the thigh is an odd shape too. Cheers man, you've definately helped.

I've blocked out a new background now that my original concept has changed a bit. Characters to build include two very over excited males in the middle ground, a bar man (probably going to be an old guy) and a fith character proping up the bar to the right (maybe a bouncer keeping a watchful eye over the proceedings). Lots basically :)
The lighting is an HDRI map (of an outdoor scene funnily enough) with two omnis (with various fall off settings) to give red and blue highlights from either side.

Hey swamps, looking good, but I have some problems with the horizontal construction of the loops on the side of the face/cheek area, I made a little paintover to suggest the general flow you could try in that area.look on the photo how the cheek seems to flow up and around...

I've enjoyed modeling this old guy as he has so much more character than younger chaps. I'm particularly pleased with his big ears and saggy jowels.
I can't wait to get him textured and it's almost a shame that he takes up such a small area of my composition - maybe another think's on the cards :)

I like the face and the textures. Only the eyebrows are looking a little weird, imo. They somehow don't look like "hairs". The wrinkles and colors are awesome. Did you already try your lights on your model? I agree that in the current light settings it is lacking a little specularity.

Air - I don't know what there is to teach really... I start by rendering to texture with a standard Max Skylight with a simple proceedural skin texture assigned to the model and then, using photographic reference start to build up the texture on top of it in Photoshop. No big secrets to reveal i'm afraid...
Madlight_1988 - The texture is pretty basic at the moment, it's just using diffuse, spec and bump channels on a standard max material. SSS would be nice but, with my current composition at least, he's not really going to be very big on the screen so I wonder if such details might get lost. We'll see, cheers for the post.

Looking great. I personally liked your initial concept, women wearing more stuff seems sexier in a strange way. (must be just me then?) :D I can see how this has more than the simple meaning of men being allured by women, but the woman being the slave to the money too. Dutchman, feel free to take whatever inspiration you want from my work man, i'll keep an eye on your stuff and will be happy to give you any pointers you want. For starters you ask about photo realistic renderings. Phew, where to start. Firstly, I'd like to point out that I have yet to render a human that I would consider photo-real, doesn't stop me pushing for it though :)
As for 'the key' to getting close I don't think there is one. Good reference is a must - both for modeling (import the images into your scene and work over them) and for using in your textures. Attention to detail is also very very important. When faking something as instanly recognisable as a human face you can't afford to get any feature wrong or it will immeditely be exposed as a fraud, even to the untrained eye.
Good shaders are important but probably not as important as lighting. Try experimenting with different renderers and HDRI maps can add a lot. Also, don't be afraid to post-process your images. I often play with the levels and bung on a few layer effects in Photoshop. This isn't cheating and can dramatically improve even a very basic render.
A mate of mine recently asked me similar question to you as he was getting frustrated with the result he ws getting using similar techniques to me. All I can say is experiment, experiment, experiment. There's no one solution, the cool thing is that every time you turn on your computer, even if it's just for five minutes you get a little bit better.

Admitedly thay are a bit repetitive and undoubtedly anatomically inacurrate but for the size they're going to end up in the final image I think they should be acceptable. hhssuu - hmm, think you're right. I can neer be bothered to make 3d eyes, I tend to go for spheres with an HDRI relfection for depth. Maybe needs ot be turned up a bit or something - sheers.
Axisman - It does look a bit wierd I agree. I'm going for a forced cheesy grin type look so that's why it's a bit more closed at the corners.
Dimitirs - Good to hear that you're starting to recognise my style. I'm getting pretty quick at banging out heads - its bodies that I can never be bothered with :)

Matheus_Bristol - Having read your post I went back and re-read the instructions. It does mention creatures but my intpretation was and still is that you can include the relationship between human and creature or vice versa, not that you must... I see how the wording could lead to confusion but I'm pretty sure i'm correct and that my image fits the brief quite well (anyone want to jump in here?). Cheers for bringing it up though :)
3D Raven - The garters on the way dude, I've got a list as long as my... arm :) of things to do, that being one of them. For anyone who interested this list includes things such as:
Garter with dollar bills in it
One of the fools waving a dollar at her
One of the fools holding a cigar/cigarette
The barman will be pouring out three cocktails from a shaker
Repositioned and reskinned girls to the left and right
Textured Shirt for fool2
Bar and podium textures
This list is as much for me as anyone else, the first thing i'll be sorting out is the lighting and general composition as i'm not currently 100% happy, I feel I need to get the focus of the image right before I go through and polish everything to a finished standard.
Marcovicd - You're probably right about that, i'll look into it... :)

Hey man...highlits a re better but indeed u have too much light ...especially on the back wall....try only a spot for the lady back there....the only problem is that u have too much light for a strip bar...(don't forget that u need some volumetric smoke effects....i think).
Keep moving man..this is one of my favourites already :wise: .

Thanks Dimitris, I planning a background with some sillouetted bodies and volumetric lights and stuff so that should look better. Also, I will definately be adding some volumetric smoke, although render times are already starting to look a bit scarey... :)

Hey Swamps, fabulous stuff... love the composition, it kinda reminds me of The Prodigy's 'Smack my bitch up' video... not quite sure why, think it may be the ending?
Anyway, just been wondering if you are going to use any DOF effects? Was thinking that maybe if her legs were slightly out of focus it might make it clearer that it's a reflection? Oh, i dunno... just throwing ideas around my own head. Looking brilliant so far, and agree that the lighting is too bright (obviously an assumption, i've never been in one) for a strip bar. How about a 3d Peter Stringfellow for the BG :D Actually, to get some truly realistic long silver hair and slimy looking old face could take some doing! :D

Lardbros, depth of field is defintely something that I have been thinking about but i'm already rendering very slowly - 5 hours just for that one above, dof just kills it. This gives me good mind to render to layers and then fake it afterwards in photoshop. That'd give me more control over it too...
As for Stringfellow, I think i'll leave him out of this one - you're right he'd be a mission to model :)

thats a really insightful and highly amusing image, you have captured it so well - such insights only come from experience :D. did you do much research for the piece if you know what i mean (wink wink). i like the old dude in the background whos like "yeah whatever" you know he gets his freebies once a week.

You know when you're half way through something and you suddenly have a much better idea...?
Well I just wasn't at all happy with the way things were going with the image so I've had (another) major re-think. It started with me making the female prettier and looks like it'll end with an almost entiely new image.
I loved the lighting of one of my test renders with the girl on a blue background and, after reading the bit in the rules about iconic imagery, decided that I just wasn't hitting the spot with what I was trying to do before.
The render here shows pretty much what i've got in mind. She still needs a few tweaks but gernerally i'm happy with the pose. The three guys will be in a similar place between her legs and hopefully I can squeeze the barman in somewhere...

Well I'm glad to see that i've appealed to your, er, artistic insticts :)
To answer a couple of the issues rasied: Her hair is just temporary - I thought it better than leaving her bald. I'm planning a huge flowing barnet that fills the whole top of the image.
As for the skinning, there are a few anomolies by i'll collapse the stack and tweak it manually now i'm happy with the pose.

Well i've got some hair in. It's a bit ragged at the moment as i'm rendering at a very low sample rate (the final renders gonna take ages...).
I've also added in the other characters. You'll notice the Barman has been promoted and is now a gawping punter like the rest. This is because I couldn't see a comfortable position for him in the composition as a barman. I think i'll have him mopping his brow.
I've also improved her face with the addition of a bespoke specular map to highlight her lips plus i've smoothed out dome of teh creases in her body.
Theres still lots to do, I want at least one hand for each of the chracters and some sort of background that suggests a lot more guys in there (probably sillouttes).
Next up a garter belt stuffed with bills...

I love the pose of your girl. I myself spend all my free time drawing hyperdynamic nude woman (well, I"m just a guy you know :) ) I think that kind of pose make the image very attractive and not static at all ... if you know what I mean!

Like all red blooded males I like the subject matter but I think the aspect ratio of your image makes it looked cramped. I think it might look better landscape with the "dancer" about a third of the width across and the onlookers spread out from the centre leading the eye across to the barman in the background. Compositionally it would be better, adding depth and leading the eyes across the entire image. At the moment I just can't stop looking at that a$$ :)

Well i've finaly added that garter i've been talking about for ages.
I've been endlessley playing around with the positions of the guys and have ended up pretty much back where I started with the addition of a couple of characters in the background and some hands waving money - not sure if their positions are final yet.
Also, i've once again tweaked teh female mesh - she now has a knee.
Overall i'm definately getting there. I'll probably play around with stuff, add a few more details whilst i've got time and tweak the hair a bit but otherwise I think i'm probably 90% done.

Dizzy Boy - Cheers, glad to know that you like the image, epecially if you spend a lot of time doing this sort of thing.
Aloriael - I hadn't actually thought of that but with her looking at you and ignoring all these wollys behind her I guess you're right. Nice one.
jsdesigns - You may well be right but i'm going to stick with this composition nevertheless. Do you not think that if I went landscape there'd be so much space to fill that the image would seem empty - i've struggled to get this much done as it is. I appreciate you mentioning it though :thumbsup:
(o)ne - I always knew she'd need hair and finally decided to bite the bullet and make some. I've never got on with shag:hair so thought i'd just try and do my best with standard polys. Probably needs a tweak or two but overall i'm pleased. Cheers man.
