Latest Update: Final Image: Escape From Area 51
This is it!
03-22-2005, 05:37 AM
Looks like this will be fun. This is my 2nd challenge. My 1st was the
3D Grand Space Opera (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?t=179803)
Now i'm trying the 2D only. Hi to all my friends!
As to a concept, I've got a couple flying arround but I'm gonna think
before I leap...I'll be using Photoshop 7...I wanna be shure I get the
most original idea I can...looking forward to seeing all your entries...
so I will get back with some concepts soon...wow, just got another,
03-22-2005, 06:55 AM
03-22-2005, 08:00 AM
hhaha 2d this time:)?
good luck my friend:thumbsup:
03-22-2005, 08:39 AM
Thanks Ace and Arturro. Nice to hear from you. Yes I decided to do
only 2D this time, but I feel like I miss that fun 3D experience with
all the crazy challenges! Are you going to enter this one Arturro?
I'm not gonna enter both 2D and 3D! Wow that would be a bit much.
Gotta try this! Wonder who else is gonna enter. :applause:
03-22-2005, 08:48 AM
 good luck man
04-05-2005, 05:25 AM
Well i've been thinking of a lot of ideas and decided it's time to put one up. Right now i'm wondering. This idea is about a masters servant pet which surprisingly learned to fly on his own and the astonished master scrambled up to try to bring the plane in.
04-05-2005, 05:39 AM
thats a funny concept, :) ...cool , but i think the perspective is to flat, tilt the camera abit to show some depth, show abit the body of the planes, and most of all...goodlux!
04-05-2005, 06:36 AM
eclipson - Thanks! Glad to hear that, cuz it's about time I get on with it!
I actually bought a plastic model kit of a Phantom jet fighter today so that
after I glue it together I can test body angles. I was debating if I should have
the planes come head on or with some angle. Your advice that the head on
look makes the image too flat is a good one, thanks. I'll be shure to add angled
bodies to the jets now! As you said, I need to get some perspective there.
I am also thinking of what to do for the background. I want that to add some
perspective too. Maybe the planes could be running thru giant trees?
04-05-2005, 09:20 AM
Good to see you're starting now, better late then never. A funny concept indeed. Waiting for more work on this.
04-08-2005, 06:46 AM
Working on the line art, did the Phantom fighter. Changed the plane to a Phantom, it was some imaginary craft.
I put the plane at an angle, as we discussed. Going for more depth and perspective. I drew this plane from the 1/72 scale model kit I bought and finished yesterday. I also have a large poster of a pair of Phantoms. The model allowed me to get the right angle. I kept the faces of the man and the dog in the same positions but I made the canvas size vertical instead of horizontal. That way I emphasize height of flight when I add a distant background.
Now what kind of plane should I give the dog? A Spitfire? But then the Phantom is an American plane, so maybe...but what if I gave the dog a space aliens's ship? Like the guy and his dog are based in area 51 and the dog took of in a spaceship? Should I include his nasty alien too? Like the alien taught the dog to fly after getting the dog to help him escape? How Hollywood is that? What do you think?
04-09-2005, 07:36 AM
I put the dog in a Stealth plane. I bought a metal toy Stealth plane and held it close to my eyes to get this angle/camera view. The background shows a bomb blast from one of the bombs the dog dropped in a landscape of fields and buildings. I thought the previous drawing was too cutesy so now
with the Phantom and the Stealth planes and the bomb blast it is getting more interesting. So how am I doing so far?
04-14-2005, 08:21 AM
Trying out some colors. Wondering if I should put camouflage on the Phantom or make it metalic. Crits welcome.
04-21-2005, 05:31 AM
Added the camouflage to the Phantom with Photoshop, airbrush. Using lots of layers to separate highlights, shadows, etc. Think I might add a space alien in the back seat of the Phantom, like he taught the dog to fly...and also the guy flying the Phantom doesn't know the alien is back there...crits needed!
04-21-2005, 10:19 AM
thanx for the great idea on my thread man, urs is so original and funny, cant critn yet, im what u might call a silent observer, i wait till the part where i can help, but i m making a simple metal tutorial which i think u might find quite useful, ill be back
04-21-2005, 10:37 AM
haha, I can imagine the the alien peeping his head in the corner holding his fingers to his lips gesturing "shhh." Didn't know you had all these updates, you should reply regularly to the thread so an email noitfication goes out, the submit page doesn't send out the notification. Hope to see more.
05-04-2005, 07:55 AM
05-04-2005, 08:07 AM
I added the alien. The story...In area 51 there are some jets. And there are some dogs
too. This dog is a mascot, like traditionally airfields had mascots. Area 51 is where space aliens
and craft are kept. This alien mind enhanced the dog, so that the dog freed the alien. Then the
dog flew out in a Stealth Fighter(bomber) because the alien telepathically taught the dog to
fly. The dogs "Master" took off after the dog. The alien snuck a ride in the Masters Phantom.
The alien told the dog to drop bombs on the fields. The alien is telepathically controlling and enhancing the dog while the alien sits secretly in the Phantom.
05-04-2005, 09:13 PM
ace4016-Just a check to see if this message is going out.
nebezial- Cool, I'd like to check out your metal tutorial, let me
know where it is.
05-05-2005, 04:11 AM
Keep it up, its going great. But hurry, only 2 weeks left. And the normal post motify alright, I was just knee deep in notifactions.
05-05-2005, 05:10 AM
cool idea!:bounce: :buttrock:
will wait for more.
05-07-2005, 11:05 AM
05-08-2005, 11:46 PM
Thanks for checking out my work firstly. I really like your image. It so original and witty. The idea of having an alien control that guy's dog and bomb Area-51 is hilarious. I can't wait to see more.
05-09-2005, 05:58 AM
Coloring the Stealth Fighter.
05-09-2005, 06:52 AM
ace4016- Yes, gotta get with it...I worked a lot of hours today. I hope to post
some reference photos too. I like the way your 3D robot character is coming
along. The background looks good. I'll keep checking it out. My first 3d was the
Grand Space Opera...wow, what a lot of late nights! It's already past 1 a.m.,
but I'm gonna hit the sack! Only 2D this time!
xric7- Thanks. I like your idea and art too. I just replied to your site.
The devil within the beautiful woman's mind is a cool concept.
In mine, I'm wondering
if I should add the missiles to the jets.
O.Martin- Glad you like the crazy concept. Your Ice Princess is awesome.
dyoung79- Thanks.I like your concept too, makes me think about those days when magic
had the attention. I sometimes test magic myself, try to keep the subtle
powers in mind.
05-09-2005, 03:14 PM
wish i could delete this post.
05-10-2005, 03:59 AM
I guess if i post a reference picture i'm supposed to host it on my website and
not use the regular submission route, right?
05-10-2005, 05:54 AM
The stealth fighter coloring looks great. Keep it up. Thanks for the compliments, I'm still relatively new to 3d. Maybe next challenge will be my first 2d, who knows. Oh, and ya, you'll need to host your own pics (I use photobucket.com for that). Not sure if your suppose to submit refrences, you could always ask one of the mods.
05-11-2005, 06:02 PM
you've got some good techniques on display here, and a solid and exciting composition, but why are the planes attacking the seemingly innocent village? i think some more dynamic lighting would improve the piece immensely
05-11-2005, 10:21 PM
Bringing out more details and area 51.
05-11-2005, 10:42 PM
I am still working on making the area below area 51. The space alien was locked in area 51. He mind controlled the dog to free himself, then made the dog fly the Stealth Fighter to bomb area 51 in an attempt to free other space aliens in the confusion. The alien plans to free other aliens. But the dog's master took off in the Phantom after the dog. So the alien secretly snuck
behind the pilot to get near the dog and control them. These are fields arround area 51, but I
am now adding airstrips and centrallizing the area 51. I will add radar domes and more obvious
As for more dynamic lighting, I am going to work on the sky and add some clouds but I am keeping a sort of hazy effect. I was planning to have some blue sky breaking in the clouds.
So maybe I can make it more dynamic in places, good idea, thanks.
05-12-2005, 05:27 AM
Adding blue sky and clouds.
05-12-2005, 05:32 AM
I've added some blue sky and clouds. And a radar dome at the bottom. I took some photos of the two fighter jet models i have which I used for feference. I'll get the photos developed tomorrow. I think the sky is improving.
05-13-2005, 04:51 AM
05-13-2005, 05:02 AM
These are the models I used. I bought them just for this challenge! I made the Phantom model from a 1/72 scale kit. The Stealth Fighter is a metal toy. The wheels are not to scale. The toy actually winds up and runs, the two buttons on top are for flashing red lights in the cockpit, a jet sound, and a machinegun sound. Serious work here! I just took these photos today. But I used these models to get this initial setup angle. I just held the models about two inches from my face! When I decided what looked dynamic enough, I held one at a time with my left hand and drew on my Wacom tablet with the other. All of the artwork is being done directly on the Wacom tablet. Even the line art. I didn't want to just copy an airforce photo, after all, this is a challenge! Planes like these are a new subject for me too. Another challenge! And lots of fun.
05-13-2005, 05:33 AM
lol, "refrences." Right! Myabe the clouds could be thinner and spread out across the sky:shrug: . Keep it up.
05-13-2005, 05:45 AM
Interesting idea dude and i like the humor add on to it. Critzs, you need to bump up the contrast of your overall piece. That stealth plane should have the darkest value and a bit bigger than the other plane since it is on the foreground. You also need to make your highlights just a tad bit sharp. Give the ground level a nice hazy effect to push it back and give depth to your piece. If i spot something else, i'll let you know. Other than that, nice work and keep it coming (5 days left).
05-13-2005, 05:46 AM
Yes, I may add more blue sky. I'll try thinning some clouds. Just got an Idea, maybe some sun shining brightly off the jets.... Gotta push the edge of my envelope. I gotta move away from my dull hazy concept. This is my challenge, to really heave it over. Can I?
05-13-2005, 05:56 AM
Thanks for the great advice! I was just typing as you posted it. Right! Now I see exactly what you mean by the Black plane should be larger cuz it's in front! Suddenly the Phantom looks too big! Ha, this is what makes these crits so important to developing ones skills. And exactly right on with what you said about the Stealth Fighter being darker! And the background hazyer!
Feel I got somewhere to go now, thanks! Back to my Phantom layers in Photoshop, where i'll just shrink them a bit...I now see how that looks better in the photo too, where I placed the Phantom slightly behind the Stealth, and it makes sense.
05-13-2005, 05:41 PM
ace4016 lol, "refrences." Right!
ARGGhh!- They ARE references! lol.
This idea actually came about when I did a three track test recording,
Track 1- My Warwick bass electric guital roaring into the red became the ship's
Track 2- My Warlock B.C.Rich metal lead guitar riff.
Track 3- My voice cutting in atmospherically and instructing the other plane with
commands to land.
I might include the short wave file...
Just thought it might be interesting to show how this idea came about, actually!
05-13-2005, 05:58 PM
LOL, very funny concept man! hope you get this finished in time
05-14-2005, 05:33 AM
05-14-2005, 05:22 PM
Actually I don't know if I want to make the top plane smaller because this is supposed to represent a near collision. The photo reference was taken later just to put in this thread, I just drew directly from the models to make the art. And if I make the top plane smaller, then the characters will be smaller too, and I don't think I want that. Now about increasing the contrast, that i think I will try tonight. Maybe I should make the alien's eyes glow? I'm not really going for a Hollywood poster look, or to make it too funny. I like a more complicated level of feeling. Maybe even the fog of war. Like in the movie "The Hitchhikers Guide to The Galaxy". Probably Hollywood added some moronic obvious wanna-be -funny appeal for the lowest level kids and nuts. I don't care to go there, but maybe I should, make it super sparkly and simple and contrasty etc. On the other hand I don't wanna look too flat either. So i'll see what I can do tonight. Oh yeah- the movie is great, and I just finished the book too.
05-14-2005, 08:07 PM
Wow, so you took a couple of film classes and got to direct on one of them. That's awesome dude. I only took screenwriting and creative writing in terms of Motion Picture. MOst of my classes where 2D animations and i was also focusing on Concept Design. So from their, i picked up Cinematography and editing. I did a lot of storyboarding too and got to do some group projects. So my route in film is a bit different from yours, but i definately think we'll see each other there. But for now, i'm doing 2D films and later on when i get more experience, i'll jump into Live action.
Keep painting and will be back to see more of your piece. I don't have to tell you to hurry, since you know what it's like to have deadline especially coming for AAU. Remember Midterms and Finals... Oy  No sleep for days...
btw, i used to sit on Barbara Bradley's class for free and she didn't mind, hehehe.
05-15-2005, 09:17 AM
Working on contrast
05-15-2005, 09:20 AM
Hi Brian....Just see you here the first time.....Thats pretty funny, and well done too, real unique take on the theme........That space alien is'nt one to be messed with I see.......funny.....
.......I'll watch for your next step now that i know your here.....keep it strong, and all the best......:buttrock:
05-15-2005, 09:42 AM
I am increasing the contrast as you suggested. I also stretched out the Phantom's left wing. I hazed out the ground in the front and increased the darkness of the Stealth Fighter. Good advice, thanks! And I sharpened and increased the highlights on the Phantom. Also touched up the characters a bit.
Things to do-
1. Darken the blue of the sky.
2. Increase the rim lighting on the clouds.
3. Add elevator flap lines.
4. Add more plane insignias.
5. Consider (try) sunlight streaks thru the clouds.
6. Increase the roads and runways and hangars.
05-15-2005, 09:49 AM
Great to see you here, I was just admiring your work. That landscape is awesome. I like the Myst feeling, and later read someone else got the same impression. Yours is one of my favorite entries. And the water...perfect. Can't wait to see it completed! That tough character you made isn't one to be messed with either! Nice skin texture! Keep rocking!
05-16-2005, 07:46 PM
Darkened the sky.
05-16-2005, 07:53 PM
Are you almost done or are you done with it? The sky looks tight dude. Very nice work on that. If you are not done yet, then keep going. I'll be here to cheer up a fellow AAU since i'm finish with mine. Now i can just bombard peoples thread with spams, hehehe.
05-16-2005, 07:54 PM
I darkened the sky and used Ace4016's advice to make the clouds thinner and spread across the sky. I put blue into them to thin them. Time is running out, if you guys have any other crits send them in cuz they are a lot of help! Now I have to check when the deadline is in California, I think it is a day earlier, anybody know? Now I wish I had about another week to tweek.
I guess i'll finish it tonight and send it in tomorrow, which will be the 17th here.
05-16-2005, 07:56 PM
I'm almost done. Thanks, glad the sky is good.
05-16-2005, 08:00 PM
I think you guys are 8 hours behind in Cali. So hurry, hurry, hurry. You are almost there bro.
05-16-2005, 08:05 PM
It's !:05 pm here now, Monday afternoon.The 16th.
Arc80-And congrats on the finish! I like the station setting. As I just said on your thread, it reminds me of when I named the Play Station for Sony. I was thinking of the duality of the action of actual movements like in sports and the stationary nature of playing a computer game. In your piece I see a duality between the active minds of the people on the platform and the stationary waiting of being at the station.
05-16-2005, 10:28 PM
The sky looks great, glad I somehow helped. As for more suggestions: mayeb the phantom's camo colors could be sharper in thier transition to each other, looks lkind of blurred. Also, maybe a sort of motion blur effect to emphasize the action going on? Your almost there, and so it the deadline, keep going, you can do it.
05-16-2005, 11:40 PM
Thanks dude. I'm glad you like my piece and really happy that you've interpreted a couple of the idea behind it. I wanted to make them feel like a butler. Just standing there and waiting for their master's order, but at the same time, make it feel that they have more connection to her than just your typical MAster & Servant idea.
Anyway, i'm not going to yap a lot. Good luck on the finish and will be waiting.
05-17-2005, 06:45 AM
I'll get on it tomorrow. The camouflage IS too soft edged, I'll try to fix it tomorrow and hopefunkly do some motion blur too, great crits again...!
I was toying with the idea of having a missile truck in the background fire a missile at the stealth plane, a missile with a long winding, twisting smoke exhaust trail representing an erratic targetting flight as it tracks the crazy flight the dog puts the stealth plane thru...just an idea, don't know if I'll have time to put it in...was thinking of two or three fired missiles actually. What do you think of that?
05-17-2005, 06:54 AM
realy cool piece.
congrats and thank for ur message.:)
:applause:  :buttrock:
05-17-2005, 06:57 AM
lol... they re dogs... and they re piloting stealth fighters... ARRRGHHH congrats on finishing and good luck mate:thumbsup:
05-17-2005, 07:31 AM
If you do add the missles I would feel sorry for the dog, poor guy wouldn't have a chance. Also if you do add a missle to the scene, where would it have come from? Keep going, you'll make it.
05-17-2005, 07:36 AM
The missile would come from an anti-aircraft missile truck. I'd draw a small truck on one of the roads. The dog would dodge the missile because the alien is controlling the dog, and the alien is right there, secretly behind the Phantom pilot. The alien would be aware the missile was fired, and the alien wants the dog to keep flying the stealth plane...because in the story the alien is a master alien and he released his servant alien with the dogs help. And the master alien wants to let his servant alien escape by getting out in the field and signalling an alien apace ship to pick him up. The master alien sacrificed his chances of escape to make shure the distracting flight goes on long enough to work...meanwhile the dog is confused serving two masters, the Phantom pilot and the Master alien...Not to mention the Phantom pilot is the base commander and he ordered the missile truck sargent not to fire at the dog, but the guy did.
05-17-2005, 07:56 AM
Makes as much sense as this crazy story can:D .
05-17-2005, 08:01 AM
You got it! lol:D
05-18-2005, 05:08 AM
05-18-2005, 05:11 AM
This is...the line art. I did it all on my Intuos Wacom tablet. All freehand, which is touchy.
05-18-2005, 05:45 AM
Forgot to submit it before? The toon style is great, hope you finish soon though.
05-18-2005, 05:53 AM
I didn't actually forget to submit it before, it's just that I don't know what will be in the final drawing because I usually add and change things as I go along...
05-18-2005, 06:41 AM
Made the camo hard edged.
05-18-2005, 06:41 AM
Yup, definately give you props for doing a line drawing with the tablet. So good job on that...
Now hurry up and just finish your final image. It's 18th of May already
cheers and goodluck dude. will be waiting :bounce:
05-18-2005, 06:45 AM
I made the camoflage hard edged like Ace4016 suggested. I'm gonna go to sleep soon, hopefully. Will finish it up tommorrow, or as you say, later today. Sure are a lot of fantastic entries in this challenge...
05-18-2005, 07:01 AM
The submit entry page says I have 1 day and 5 hours left. Hope it's right.
05-18-2005, 08:40 AM
The submit entry page says I have 1 day and 5 hours left. Hope it's right.
As Mibus says, "Trust the counter:) ." Hard edged camo looks great. Good luck with the finishing touchs.
05-19-2005, 12:09 AM
Added motion blur...
05-19-2005, 12:14 AM
Title of the art is:
Escape From Area 51.
Added motion blur as Ace4061 suggested. What do you think? I also added the teeth and the eye to the Phantom because some Phantoms have that painted on. Now I can't stop! Me and my Wacom are having some fun. I also added a dark green camouflage color.
05-19-2005, 03:39 AM
A closeup of the pilot's face.
05-19-2005, 03:41 AM
Her's the Area 51 Commanders face closeup. It's about time for me to post my final, huh? Is there anything I missed?
05-19-2005, 04:10 AM
This is it!
05-19-2005, 04:15 AM
Escape From Area 51
Finished. Thank you to everyone who participated in this thred. You made it possible.
Although there are areas I could work on more, I'm happy with this. It was fun to participate in my second challenge.
05-19-2005, 05:13 AM
OK I finally submitted the final .TIF.
05-19-2005, 07:23 AM
Congrats on a finished image. This was one crazy concept/story. Nice addition of the darker green camo. . I think you've done a great job, and hope to see you in the next challenge. Good luck and best wishes.
hehe, it's funny that the Univeristy you went to has the same name as my M&S robot, I just had to point it out :D .
05-20-2005, 05:05 AM
Thanks again. Yeah I noticed your robot is named AAU. I thought you made a mistake and checked back into your thread to check. Congrats on your first challenge too! Great entry.
05-20-2005, 05:19 AM
The story was told earlier but I thought I'd put it here too.
Escape From Area 51
John is the base commander in area 51. He watches over the locked up space aliens. One day as he was reading the Sunday funnies the alien achieved mental control of his dog Rover, the base mascot. Rover got up and keyed in the combination to open the door releasing the alien. The alien went to release another alien, his servant. They were going to run outside and signal a space ship to beam them up. But a distraction would be necessary. So the alien mind controlled the dog to pilot a Stealth Fghter and drop a bomb on the field by the runway. But the dogs owner noticed the dog take off so the man took off in a Phantom to try to make the dog land. The master alien decided to sneak into the Phantom
without the pilot knowing, in order to keep the dog flying. Rover was confused by now having two masters to obey, each giving contradicting orders. John signaled furiously to get the dog to take the Stealth Fighter down. The servant alien signaled the saucer and escaped, but the master alien was caught by the pilot and put back in area 51. Someday he will try to escape again.
05-20-2005, 06:36 AM
CONGRATULATIONS dude. I'm glad you finished it. You deserve an :applause: :applause:
Now you can relax and rest those eyes, hehe. Great job and keep in touch ;)
GOODLUCK and see you around (i usually visit SF quite often and drop by the AAU. maybe i'll see you around there).
08-07-2005, 10:04 AM
I just saw the movie "STEALTH" last thursday. Awesome. Anybody seen it?
