Latest Update: Final Image: Farewell To Kong

Well I took a couple of days off and revisited the painting, knowing that I would find something that bothered me... Sure enough I fixed a couple of things, but nothing noticeble. At this point I think I should call it done!

I'm so glad that I had the chance to participate in one of these challenges. It's been a lot of fun, and I would like to thank those that helped me during the process plus all the positive feedback that kept me pumped to continue painting.

Thanks again and good luck to all of you. Can't wait for the next challenge!

Cheers!

Here's a quick sketch of kong and a basic value range of the city which is now just a blur. I need to sketch a pose for the girl (Ann). I think I want a sad expression on Kong's face, kinda like a farewell to Ann.

I placed the girl on Kong's hand, I'll have to play with the scale on both of them. It'll probably end up being different from the original, I'll just say it's artistic license:) Crits would be awesome, thanks!

Excellent idea from a classic scenario. Personally, i'd like to see a portrait layout, rather than the the landscape tlayout format you have at the moment. It might create a lot of dead space over to the right. If you did it portrait, you could have Kong leaning over her, dominating the upper half of your shot, creating a lot of scale, and it would look very clostraphobic for the girl.

Just a thought.

Look forward to seeing this develop,

Paul

I like your sketches. The fact that you're painting an ape is a bonus :) Paul is right, you would do better to make your canvas portrait so you can really get the size difference working. One idea would be to fill the lower 2/3 with the woman and the hand, then have Kong's face towering above them (very difficult perspective-wise, but just an idea)

Wow those are awesome ideas.... I guess the reason I designed the image this way is because I'm trying to get an emotion out of Kong that's not dominating or agressive. Maybe he's showing affection for the girl or he's sad because he's letting her go. The girl at this point in the story is not afraid of him, she perhaps becomes the dominating figure in the image.... In the city I'll have people on rooftops and probably some planes flying in the background, for I think that's mandatory for any King Kong illustration http://www.cgtalk.com/images/icons/icon7.gif But I'm liking the idea of Kong towering over her in a portrait canvas as well. That seems really dynamic, I'll probably do some sketches of that as well. Thanks for the thoughts. http://www.cgtalk.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Here's a quick line drawing of Kong and the girl within the city. I'm gonna draw other versions of the city. I'll have lots of people on the rooftops of the buildings looking up at them. The expression on Kong's face is kind of the one I want, I'll have to work on it. And I want the girl to seem comfortable with him.

Hi everyone, here's Kong and Ann rendered to a certain extent, but I need to continue on with the design of the city.... I get carried away with detail too soon:) With the city I'm trying to keep the lighter area around her, and have all the values in the buildings lighter to mantain the focus on her. I'm wanting to keep the painting in black and white for I think it fits the time period. I'll be doing a lot of research on architecture, and I'll try to submit a couple of different versions of the city soon, I hope...

With Kong I'm trying to have a certain expression, one that shows that he is not wanting to harm her, and that she isn't afraid of him. This being after all the running around and climbing buidings with her being in terror. Maybe this is a farewell before a situation that might bring harm to Ann. In the city I'm going to have people staring at them, and the faded background you can see planes flying towards them. I just need to start painting all this stuff that I'm talking about.... C&C's would be awesome. Thanks!

Thanks for all the comments! Yeah it's tough for me to stop working on something once I get going with it. Kong was a lot of fun to paint, but now comes the challenge of painting the city.... I'll try to post more often as I work on the city, I think by tommorow I can show the different ideas I have for it. I'm wanting to keep that intimate feeling of Kong and Ann allthough there in the middle of New York City and there's a ton of people watching them...

Thanks Paul for supporting the idea of keeping the image in black and whiteimages/icons/icon7.gif. I've never done a digital painting in grayscale, it reminds me of good ol' graphite pencils.

Good luck to all you guys!

WOW - Man very nice image - the fur and hair on gorilla is excellent - the girl seems to be a little washed out to me - I want to feel like she is more of this image but I don't for some reason - but overall this work speaks to me; to have something so big and strong humbled by a woman - really good work!!!.

Here's a couple of ideas for the background that I'm playing with. I'm leaning towards the top one because I like the way that the perspective lines are going towards Ann.... Allthough at the moment they really aren't. I want a rooftop as part of the foreground elements to indicate that Kong is about to place Ann there. I think the value range of the buildings is getting there. Once I run some perspective lines on those buidlings, I'll start designing them, and I'll be doing a lot of research on architecture. C&C's would be awesome. Thanks!

When I saw the thumbnail I thought it was a photo!!! but not, very nice the option in black and white, you got the sense of depht of field with the fog much better than with a blur as I saw in other sketch, the buildings are very suggesting, you can imagine what is happening there without seeing nothing, I think many times that "less is more".

Very nice the indirect light on her.

Great job, I really like

hi freakjc

I prefer the top one as well. Much easier to focus on the girl and kong, the bottom one tends to draw my eye away from them. And I do like your b/w approach as well - great idea. :)

I'm placing detail on the buildings and have the perspective angled toward Ann. Still have ways to go with this building but I'll add more detail as I move on to the others... Hope you guys like the idea of people looking out of the windows, I still need to add more of them and perhaps make them more obvious. Thanks for all your comments, C&C's are most welcome! Thanks.

Hi freakjc! Your work looks really good. I've love the mood of the picture. It is really enhanced by the black and white mode you're working in. Keep up the good work!

BTW, are you after that old movie look? Is that why you've chosen B&W mode? If that's your goal, you might consider making it with a slight sepia tone and adding some graininess to the image after your done. It might prove to be an interesting experiment. Food for thought. Great work!

liiga

Sweeeeet! I don't have anything constructive to say really, but I love the detail and the lighting here. If I absolutely had to nitpick, it looks like compositionally the ape and the girl are a bit disconnected from the rest of the picture, but it may just be because of the different refinement which of course will change later on. Keep up the good work!

04-29-2005, 10:04 PM
Wow, thanks for all the comments guys, I hope that as I place more detail that the characters will feel more intergrated within the entire composition, thanks liiga for mentioning that. And TMartist I'll take a shot at playing around with some of those ideas, they would be nice little final touches to the piece... Cheers! http://www.cgtalk.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Well here's another building kinda done... I've placed some people on the rooftop but still have to play with their composition. I'm thinking of adding a forearm to Kong to add balance and show that he's holding on to something, and I think that will help with the dead space in that lower part of the last painted building.... But I'll probably get to that once I'm done with the buildings. Thanks for all the comments! C&C's are most welcome. Thanks!

Knowing that I have chosen for my entry a well known idea such as King Kong I realized that I needed to aproach it with a different emotion than what is tipically illustrated in our minds. King Kong roaring at Ann as she screams in terror is kind of the first thing that comes to mind. I want to show Kong being gentle, not menacing towards Ann, and in exchange having the viewer not be sure of who is the master and who is the servant. Could it be that Ann has more power over Kong now that he has feelings for her? Or is Kong the master because of his size and strength?

Anyways I hope that helps illustrate why I didn't go with the tipical idea of angry King Kong. And once I place the planes in the background it hopefully should show the danger that's about to come, and the harm that might come to Ann by Kong having her with him.

Thanks for comments guys. Cheers! http://www.cgtalk.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Well here are a couple more buildings painted. I still need to add more detail to them but I'll get to that later. I'm playing around with the idea of birds in the backgroumd. Wow Joshua...nice entry. Crisp and soft at the same time. The black&white really works well in my opinion. The only thing that bothered me is the detail on Kong's arm. The eye of the viewer shouldn't be drawn to the corner of the image. I would suggest making the arm hairs shorter and dropping the arm into shadow.

Great work!

What I really like on this is the feel of melancholy that surrounds this scene. You know this relationship that is just destined to end tragically. There is a lot of emotion involved. About the master & servant component, without taking your explanation into account, I would interpret it the way that kong is servant to his nature, a master that has put him in chains that even he, with all his might, can't overcome and thus will always keep him seperated from the only thing he sought-after: a human love. A truely sad story. Great work freak.

Wow guys thanks for the replies! I'm glad to hear that the black and white idea is being well received. To answer your question makrill I placed a vanishing point at around the area where Ann's head is, basically to have the buildings guide your eyes back to her. Then I found the corner points where I wanted my perspective lines to start from and shift clicked to the vanishing point. I just had to do this many many times, http://www.cgtalk.com/images/icons/icon7.gif and used them as my guides. I'll post the image with the lines layer on as an example. http://www.cgtalk.com/images/icons/icon13.gif

Solothores... Man what can I say I need to hire you as my representative. I couldn't of said it any better. -- I would interpret it the way that kong is servant to his nature, a master that has put him in chains that even he, with all his might, can't overcome and thus will always keep him seperated from the only thing he sought-after: a human love. A truely sad story. --- I might just name the piece "A Human Love." I love that interpretation!

To andreasrocha, man you're right, now that I see it it really bothers me. I'll have to fix that, I guess I'll take care of it once I'm done with the buildings thanks man! http://www.cgtalk.com/images/icons/icon13.gif

Well I got all the buildings painted, still need to do a final pass at all of them, but it's time to move on to the sky and the planes. I think I'll keep the sky mostly white and the planes faily distant.

I still need to darken Kongs right arm so that it doesn't guide our eyes towards the corner, and I need to add a forearm to his left arm.... Hopefully I'll get this done soon:) Anyways, thanks for all the replies guys. I hope we all get this done before the 18th!

Man it feels great to almost be done! Well I painted the planes, and I think I'll keep the sky clear with no clouds. I want to keep the planes faint so it's not distracting.

Thanks Anreasrocha for the suggestion of darkening Kong's arm. I think now it keeps your eye from wondering towards that corner and keeps you focused on them. I still need to do some finaling on all the buildings plus some general clean_up here and there.... Oh yeah, and I hid Waldo in one of the buildings see if you guys can find him. In this image I turned on the layer which has all my guides that I used to create the city. I wanted to keep the focus as much as I could on Ann so I decided to have all perspective lines go to her. Thanks for the replies guys! I'm really excited about all this, since it's my first time entering a challenge.... I can't wait to see who wins! But at the same time I'm really excited about Star Wars as well, so I'm all around really pumped these coming days... I wonder how long it takes them to judge? Anyways good luck to all you guys!

I would'nt change a thing. Like I wrote at the beginning of this thread.....I love it. The composition, and the vanishing point manipulating the reader is very well done. B + W always does it for me.

This should do very well.

Congratulations on a very professional piece.

Good luck.

Great painting! I love the fact it is in b/w! And the style of it gets me pumped for what we are going to see in a few months on the big screen (King Kong :) . Keep it up Josh!

I really like this. Really captures the 8th Wonder of the World in a tender moment. I take it you're looking forward to Peter Jackson's remake as much as I am.

I also like how everything converges on Anne to keep her the focus of everything...which was the focus of Kong.

Great piece

Simply amazing. How did you go from sketch to model on Kong?
